RTQ2183-QA Présentation
A synchronous buck (step-down) converter is a switching DC-DC topology that uses a high-side MOSFET, a low-side synchronous rectifier, an LC output filter, and a control loop to deliver a lower regulated voltage from a higher input rail with high efficiency. Synchronous designs replace the traditional Schottky rectifier with a low-RDS(on) MOSFET to reduce conduction losses, and the RTQ2183-QA integrates both FETs inside the package for the smallest possible footprint. ACOT® (Advanced Constant On-Time) is Richtek's proprietary control architecture that delivers fast transient response without requiring loop compensation, making the part well-suited to point-of-load applications where the load steps quickly.
Key specifications include 3 A continuous output current, 2.5 V to 5.5 V input range, 0.6 V to 3.3 V adjustable output, 2.4 MHz nominal switching frequency, and integrated 65 mΩ/35 mΩ MOSFETs. Comprehensive protection is built in: input undervoltage-lockout (UVLO), output undervoltage protection (UVP), output overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP) with cycle-by-cycle current limit, and over-temperature protection (OTP). The part is AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive environments.
The ACOT® control loop eliminates the external compensation network typically required by peak-current-mode or voltage-mode buck converters, simplifying PCB layout and reducing BOM count. The 2.4 MHz switching frequency enables a 1 µH inductor and small ceramic output capacitors, allowing a complete 3 A point-of-load solution under 25 mm². Soft-start is internally trimmed to limit inrush current during power-up, and the device supports 100% duty-cycle operation for low-dropout conditions at VIN close to VOUT.
Typical applications include automotive infotainment systems, ADAS camera/sensor rails, body electronics, USB Type-C VBUS buck regulation, and industrial 5 V distributed-bus point-of-load converters. The wide VIN range also covers USB-PD source applications, portable instrumentation, and FPGA/CPU core rails powered from a single Li-ion cell.
When designing with this device, place the input ceramic capacitor within 2 mm of the VIN and PGND pins to suppress switching-node ringing, and keep the feedback trace away from the SW node to avoid noise coupling. The exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground plane to meet the thermal rating at 3 A continuous load.

Automotive Body Electronics
Body control modules (BCMs) require compact, efficient buck regulators to power interior lighting, mirror controllers, seat adjustment motors, and HVAC actuators from the 12 V/5 V automotive bus. The RTQ2183-QA's 2.5 V to 5.5 V input range aligns directly with 5 V regulated body domains, while its 3 A output supports multiple downstream loads on a single converter. The WET-VDFN-8J2L package is small enough for the densely populated BCM PCBs where board area is at a premium. Integrated OCP, OVP, UVP, and OTP features minimize external protection circuitry, reducing BOM cost and PCB complexity for high-volume body electronics programs.
Recommandé
USB Type-C VBUS Buck Regulation
USB Type-C ports in automotive head units and rear-seat entertainment systems require a downstream buck regulator to convert VBUS (5 V nominal) to lower voltages for protocol controllers, MUXes, and cable compensations. The RTQ2183-QA operates directly from USB VBUS (2.5 V to 5.5 V input) and delivers 3 A at adjustable outputs from 0.6 V to 3.3 V. The 2.4 MHz switching frequency stays above the USB 2.0 high-speed data band edges, minimizing conducted and radiated EMI. ACOT® control handles the load steps encountered when USB devices negotiate higher current contracts without output voltage droop.

Notes de conception
Place the input ceramic capacitor within 2 mm of the VIN and PGND pins to minimize high-frequency switching-loop inductance. Use a 22 µF X7R or X5R 6.3 V ceramic cap on VIN, and route a wide PGND copper pour directly to the exposed pad. The exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground plane on the top layer with multiple thermal vias to inner ground layers to meet the 3 A thermal rating.
Estimated: at VIN = 5 V, VOUT = 3.3 V, IOUT = 3 A, efficiency is approximately 92-94%. Power dissipation is therefore around 0.18-0.25 W, which is manageable in the WET-VDFN-8J2L package on a standard 4-layer PCB. At VIN = 5 V, VOUT = 1.0 V (high step-down ratio), efficiency drops to ~85% and dissipation rises to ~0.53 W; ensure adequate copper area or forced airflow. For sustained 3 A operation, junction temperature must stay below 125°C - verify with measured theta_JA on your specific PCB layout.
Do not route the feedback (FB) trace near the SW node or under the inductor - noise coupling can cause output voltage instability and audible switching noise in audio applications. Keep the FB trace short and routed over a continuous ground plane. The bootstrap capacitor on BST must use a 0.1 µF ceramic placed as close to the BST and SW pins as possible; an undersized or misplaced bootstrap cap causes high-side gate-drive loss and reduced efficiency.
The 2.4 MHz fundamental switching frequency sits just above the AM broadcast band (530 kHz to 1710 kHz), reducing AM-band conducted and radiated EMI. To further minimize EMI, use shielded inductors with low DCR, place the input capacitor return directly to the PGND copper pour, and consider a small RC snubber (1 Ω + 100 pF) on the SW node if radiated emissions exceed target limits during pre-compliance testing.
