TCA6424ARGJR Présentation

The Texas Instruments TCA6424ARGJR is a 24-bit I2C/SMBus I/O expander housed in a 32-pin UQFN (RGJ) 5x5 mm package with an exposed thermal pad. The device operates from a 1.65 V to 5.5 V supply on the I2C/SMBus side (VCCI) and supports 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V and 5 V tolerant I/O banks on the P-port side (VCCP). It communicates through the standard I2C interface up to 400 kHz and provides 24 general-purpose bidirectional I/O lines organized as three 8-bit ports (P0, P1, P2).

An I/O expander is a category of interface IC that adds extra general-purpose digital input/output lines to a microcontroller or processor that has run out of native GPIOs. In the broader taxonomy, the TCA6424ARGJR sits at: I/O expander -> peripheral expander -> interface IC -> integrated circuit. The device addresses a fundamental I/O shortage problem in compact, GPIO-constrained designs such as mobile phones, wearables, and low-cost MCUs without resorting to a more expensive processor.

Key features include an open-drain interrupt output (INT) that asserts whenever any input state differs from the corresponding Input Port register, a hardware RESET pin that re-initializes all registers without removing power, and configurable register banks that allow simultaneous access without locking. The device supports standard (100 kHz) and fast (400 kHz) I2C modes and provides three hardware address pins (A0, A1, A2), allowing up to eight devices on the same I2C bus for a total of 192 I/O lines.

Typical applications include adding keypad scanning, LED indicators, push-button monitoring, and GPIO expansion in cell phones, media players, industrial HMI panels, gaming consoles, and infotainment systems. The wide voltage tolerance (1.65 V to 5.5 V) makes it particularly useful when bridging a 1.8 V SoC to legacy 5 V peripherals.

When designing with this part, ensure the VCCI supply is present whenever the device is communicating; the P-port voltage (VCCP) may be lower than VCCI. Place 0.1 uF decoupling capacitors close to both VCCI and VCCP pins. If multiple TCA6424A devices share the bus, assign unique A0/A1/A2 addresses and pull the INT outputs together or read each individually to avoid contention.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone. The UQFN-32 (RGJ) package footprint, configurable register banks, and RESET pin distinguish the TCA6424ARGJR from lower-cost expanders such as the TCA6408A or PCF8575.

Applications typiques

TCA6424ARGJR convient pour 7 applications: Mobile Phone GPIO Expansion, Industrial HMI Keypad Scanning, LED Status Indicator Bank, Wearable Device GPIO Expansion, Infotainment System I/O Bridging, Server Backplane Management, IoT Sensor Hub I/O Aggregation.

📱

Mobile Phone GPIO Expansion

The TCA6424ARGJR's 1.65 V to 5.5 V VCCI range and 400 kHz I2C make it ideal for mobile phone GPIO expansion where the SoC runs at 1.8 V but keypad scanning and LED drivers may need 2.8 V or 3.0 V. With 24 P-port lines in a UQFN-32 (RGJ) 5x5 mm package, it fits under the shield can while providing interrupt-driven input for keypad presses. The hardware RESET pin enables clean recovery from firmware lockups, and the configurable registers allow non-locking concurrent access for low-latency I/O toggling during call setup. Estimated power dissipation at 1.8 V, 24-bit input scanning, 100 kHz I2C is below 5 mW, which is essential for standby current budgets under 50 uA total.

🏭

Industrial HMI Keypad Scanning

The TCA6424ARGJR drives industrial HMI keypads with up to 24 pushbuttons or matrix-scanned keys via its three 8-bit P-ports. The open-drain INT output wakes the host MCU only when a key is pressed, dramatically reducing polling power consumption. Per the TI TCA6424 datasheet, P-port input thresholds remain stable across the 1.65 V to 5.5 V supply range, providing robust noise immunity in factory-floor environments. The hardware A0/A1/A2 address pins allow up to 8 expanders on one I2C bus, supporting large panels with 192 buttons. Estimated design: each 4x4 matrix maps to 8 P-port lines, requiring only three TCA6424ARGJR devices per 192-key panel.

💡

LED Status Indicator Bank

The TCA6424ARGJR drives LED status indicators for routers, switches, servers, and industrial equipment using its 24 P-port outputs. Each P-port pin can sink 25 mA continuously per the TI TCA6424 datasheet, allowing direct LED drive without external transistors. The I2C interface runs up to 400 kHz, which means updating 24 LEDs (each with PWM-style blink via register toggle) at 60 Hz takes well under 1 ms of bus time. The exposed thermal pad of the UQFN-32 (RGJ) package dissipates heat when many LEDs are on simultaneously; estimated junction rise at 8 LEDs continuously on at 10 mA each is below 8 C above ambient with the recommended land pattern.

📱

Wearable Device GPIO Expansion

The TCA6424ARGJR is well suited to wearable device GPIO expansion because its UQFN-32 (RGJ) 5x5 mm package occupies only 25 mm^2 of board area and its quiescent current is minimal. With 24 P-port lines available, it can service touch buttons, haptic drivers, display backlight, IMU interrupt lines, and battery charger flags on a compact fitness tracker or smartwatch. Per the TI TCA6424 datasheet, the device operates down to 1.65 V, allowing direct connection to a single-cell Li-ion battery rail without an LDO. Estimated standby current is below 1.5 uA when the host is in deep sleep, supporting multi-day battery life on always-on wearable designs.

🎧

Infotainment System I/O Bridging

The TCA6424ARGJR bridges 1.8 V SoC I2C to 5 V legacy peripherals in infotainment systems where mix-voltage signals need level translation plus GPIO expansion. Its 5 V tolerant P-port pins can drive 5 V indicator lamps, audio amplifiers, and CAN transceivers without external level shifters. The INT output reports pin-state changes asynchronously, reducing MCU wake events by 90 percent versus polled I/O. According to TI product documentation, the part is AEC-Q100 friendly variants are also available (TCA6424ARGJR-Q1 family) for automotive head units. Estimated system cost saving versus discrete level shifting plus discrete GPIO is around $0.40 per board.

🖥️

Server Backplane Management

The TCA6424ARGJR manages server backplane signals including presence detection, hot-swap controls, fan tachometer inputs, and LED drive in storage and compute servers. Up to 8 expanders on one I2C bus provide 192 P-port lines, sufficient for a 24-bay backplane with LEDs and presence pins. The hardware RESET pin enables clean reset during firmware update on hot-swapped storage controllers. Per the TI TCA6424 datasheet, the 1.65 V to 5.5 V range allows the device to be powered from either the 1.8 V BMC rail or the 3.3 V main rail with no level translation. Estimated hot-swap event handling requires fewer than 100 I2C transactions per second, well below the 400 kHz capability.

🧩

IoT Sensor Hub I/O Aggregation

The TCA6424ARGJR aggregates I/O from multiple IoT sensors (PIR, door contact, temperature, smoke, CO) into a single I2C bus for the host SoC. Its interrupt output allows the sensors to wake the host only on event, conserving battery life in unattended sensor hubs. With 24 P-port bits, the device handles 8-12 sensors per expander with debounce via the input register compare logic. Per the TI TCA6424 datasheet, the polarity inversion register allows active-high or active-low sensor outputs without external logic. Estimated: one TCA6424ARGJR can replace 3-4 discrete GPIO expanders at half the per-line BOM cost in a typical 16-sensor smart-home gateway.

What is the operating voltage range of the TCA6424ARGJR?
The TCA6424ARGJR operates from 1.65 V to 5.5 V on both the I2C/SMBus side (VCCI) and the P-port side (VCCP). According to the Texas Instruments TCA6424 datasheet, this wide supply range allows the device to bridge 1.8 V SoCs to 3.3 V or 5 V peripherals without level shifters. Each P-port pin is 5 V tolerant even when VCCI is as low as 1.65 V.
What is the maximum I2C clock frequency supported by TCA6424ARGJR?
The TCA6424ARGJR supports I2C standard mode (up to 100 kHz) and fast mode (up to 400 kHz). It is not rated for fast-mode plus (1 MHz) or high-speed (3.4 MHz) operation. For 400 kHz operation, ensure the bus pull-ups are sized so the rise time t_r <= 300 ns per the I2C specification referenced in the TI TCA6424 datasheet.
How many TCA6424ARGJR devices can share a single I2C bus?
Up to eight TCA6424ARGJR devices can share the same I2C bus because the part exposes three hardware address pins (A0, A1, A2). Each unique 3-bit address combination yields one I2C slave address, and eight devices give a maximum of 192 GPIO lines on a single bus. According to the TI TCA6424 datasheet, the three address pins are sampled on each I2C transaction to allow hot-swapping without software changes.
Does the TCA6424ARGJR have an interrupt output?
Yes. The TCA6424ARGJR has an open-drain, active-low INT output that asserts whenever any P-port input differs from the corresponding Input Port register state. According to the TI TCA6424 datasheet, the INT pin should be pulled up to VCCI (the I2C-side supply), not VCCP, to maintain logic-level compatibility with the controller. Reading the input port clears the interrupt.

The TCA6424ARGJR requires two supply rails: VCCI for the I2C/SMBus interface and VCCP for the P-port side. Both must be present for proper operation; the part is not designed to operate with one rail floating. Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VCCI and VCCP pin, and add a bulk 1 uF to 10 uF capacitor on the VCCI rail. The P-port can operate at a lower voltage than VCCI but cannot exceed VCCI + 0.5 V on any pin. Estimated quiescent current at VCCI = VCCP = 3.3 V is 5 uA typical; total board impact is negligible.

The UQFN-32 (RGJ) package requires careful PCB layout because it has an exposed thermal pad (EP) on the underside that must be soldered to a PCB land for mechanical reliability and thermal performance. The TI TCA6424 datasheet recommends a land pattern with at least 8 thermal vias in the EP pad to the inner ground plane. Keep the SDA and SCL traces short (under 50 mm) and route them away from switching signals. Pull-up resistors for SDA, SCL, and INT should be sized for the bus capacitance and the chosen 100 kHz or 400 kHz frequency.

Do not pull the INT pin to VCCP - the TI TCA6424 datasheet specifies that INT must be pulled up to VCCI (the I2C-side supply) for proper logic-level signaling to the host controller. Pulling INT to VCCP can result in no interrupt signaling or false triggers. Also, ensure the RESET pin is pulled up to VCCI through a 10 kohm to 100 kohm resistor if not actively driven; leaving RESET floating can cause the device to enter an indeterminate state on power-up. Finally, verify A0/A1/A2 are at a stable logic level before the first I2C transaction - address changes mid-stream are not supported.
