STM32L4R5VIT6 Présentation

The STMicroelectronics STM32L4R5VIT6 is an ultra-low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller (MCU) with FPU, delivering 150 DMIPS at 120 MHz, integrating 2 MB of Flash and 640 KB of SRAM, and housed in a 100-pin LQFP (14x14 mm) package. The part belongs to the STM32L4+ Series and operates from a 1.71 V to 3.6 V supply, with a separate I/O rail that can go down to 1.08 V, supporting modern low-voltage sensor and memory interfacing.

An ARM Cortex-M4 MCU is a 32-bit RISC processor with Thumb-2 instruction set, an integrated single-precision FPU, and a rich interrupt controller (NVIC). It sits in the hierarchy microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor IC and serves as the central compute element in battery-powered and ultra-low-power embedded systems, replacing older 8/16-bit MCUs while adding DSP instructions and DSP/SIMD acceleration for sensor-fusion signal chains.

Key features include 2 MB dual-bank Flash allowing read-while-write firmware updates, 640 KB SRAM, an Octal-SPI interface and SD-card interface for external memory expansion, USB OTG full-speed, two 12-bit ADCs (5 Msps), two 12-bit DACs, a digital filter for Sigma-Delta modulators (DFSDM), an LCD-TFT display controller and an optional MIPI-DSI interface on higher part numbers. The integrated SMPS step-down converter plus ultra-low-power modes (down to sub-µA STOP and STANDBY currents) make the device ideal for wearables, smart metering, and IoT edge nodes.

Architecturally, the STM32L4R5 family uses ST's 90 nm ultra-low-leakage process with an on-chip voltage regulator that can switch between LDO and an external SMPS for higher efficiency at moderate loads. This dual-mode regulator is one of the L4+ family's main architectural advances over earlier STM32L4 devices, cutting active current by ~50% at 1.8 V systems.

Typical applications include wearable fitness/health bands, smart watches, industrial sensor hubs, low-power IoT gateways, USB-C powered human-interface devices, smart metering with LCD/TFT display, and portable medical devices such as glucose meters or pulse oximeters. The combination of large memory, MIPI-DSI display support, and ultra-low-power modes also suits high-end consumer HMI panels.

When designing in this MCU, allocate the 2 MB dual-bank Flash layout from the start: select a bootloader in bank 1 that can swap banks for OTA. Use the built-in DFSDM for low-power sensor acquisition and reserve at least 64 KB of SRAM for the GUI framebuffer when using the LCD-TFT peripheral.

📱

Wearable Fitness / Health Bands

The STM32L4R5VIT6 is ideally suited for wearable fitness and health bands thanks to its integrated SMPS reaching sub-µA quiescent current in STOP/STANDBY modes and the Cortex-M4 with FPU at 120 MHz enabling on-device sensor fusion. Its two 5 Msps 12-bit ADCs and hardware DFSDM can directly interface with analog and digital Σ-Δ MEMS sensors (accelerometer, PPG, temperature) without an external codec. The 2 MB dual-bank Flash supports BLE-stack OTA with read-while-write updates, and the 640 KB SRAM (with 128 KB of fast CCM) handles ring-buffer audio capture for heart-rate variability. With a supply range of 1.71-3.6 V, the device can run directly from a single coin cell or Li-ion battery.

🏭

Smart Metering and IoT Edge Nodes

For electricity, gas and water meters plus wireless IoT edge nodes, the STM32L4R5VIT6 provides 2 MB of Flash for protocol stacks (LoRaWAN, Wireless M-Bus, Sigfox) and 640 KB of SRAM for metering algorithm buffers, all while staying under 100 µA/MHz active. The integrated SMPS reduces bill-of-materials by removing an external regulator, and the Octal-SPI interface connects directly to external NOR or PSRAM for logging data when network connectivity is intermittent. The two 12-bit ADCs combined with the built-in op-amp and voltage reference enable accurate metrology-class analog front ends (Class 0.5 metering accuracy typical). Operating down to 1.71 V also suits multi-cell battery-powered flow meters.

📺

Industrial HMI with TFT-LCD Display

The STM32L4R5VIT6 integrates an LCD-TFT controller capable of driving displays up to XGA resolution, which makes it a cost-effective main MCU for industrial HMI panels and appliance control screens below 7-inch in size. The 640 KB SRAM provides framebuffer space for compact GUIs (typically 16-bit 800x480), and the 2 MB Flash leaves room for the LVGL/Embedded Wizard graphical stack. The integrated SMPS keeps the panel backlight driver and main MCU on the same 3.3 V rail, lowering BOM cost. The dual-bank Flash also enables safe panel firmware OTA, a requirement in Industry 4.0 deployments.

💊

Portable Medical Devices

For portable medical devices such as pulse oximeters, glucose meters, and ambulatory ECG patches, the STM32L4R5VIT6 offers the right balance of low-power DSP compute (via the Cortex-M4 with FPU) and analog integration (dual 12-bit ADCs, dual op-amps). The Cortex-M4 SIMD instructions accelerate heart-rate-variability digital filter loops, while the hardware DFSDM directly interfaces with Σ-Δ sensors - a common architecture in medical electronics. The integrated SMPS and sub-µA STOP modes stretch battery life beyond one year on a single Li-coin cell. The 100-pin LQFP offers 83 GPIO to drive displays, audio alerts, and BLE antennas without extending to a larger package.

🔧

USB Type-C Human Interface Devices

The STM32L4R5VIT6 includes a USB OTG full-speed peripheral with internal PHY and USB-Power Delivery support, making it a strong fit for USB Type-C keyboards, mice, gaming peripherals, and audio interfaces. The 120 MHz Cortex-M4 handles HID class drivers with margin, while the 640 KB SRAM accommodates USB audio buffering. Hardware encryption on the L4S5 sibling and dual-bank Flash enable signed-firmware updates required for USB-IF certified devices. The 100-pin LQFP is a strong match for through-hole USB-C connector designs and ergonomic plastics.

🧩

Smart Home Sensor Hubs

The STM32L4R5VIT6 sits well as the central controller of smart-home sensor hubs (Zigbee/Z-Wave/Matter bridges) because it can drive multiple serial peripherals (6x USART, 3x SPI, 3x I2C, two CAN) to bridge radio co-processors without an external bus mux. Its Cortex-M4 at 120 MHz runs Bluetooth/Matter application stacks concurrently with real-time sensor polling, and the SMPS keeps total board power under 100 mW - useful for always-on hubs. The 2 MB Flash supports the large persistent Matter-attestation credential store; the 640 KB SRAM handles multi-protocol message queues.

What is the maximum clock frequency of the STM32L4R5VIT6?
The STM32L4R5VIT6 runs the ARM Cortex-M4 core at up to 120 MHz, delivering 150 DMIPS and 273 CoreMark. According to the ST datasheet covering STM32L4R5/S7/S9 devices, the same 120 MHz applies across the LQFP-100 variants. The CPU clock is derived from one of four internal oscillators (MSI, HSI16, HSI48, PLL) or an external crystal, selectable through RCC configuration.
How much Flash and SRAM does the STM32L4R5VIT6 have?
The STM32L4R5VIT6 integrates 2 MB of dual-bank Flash (read-while-write capable, supporting live firmware OTA updates) and 640 KB of SRAM. The datasheet splits SRAM as 128 KB SRAM1, 384 KB SRAM2, and a 128 KB CCM (core-coupled memory) accessible only from the CPU for time-critical routines. Flash is organized as two 1 MB banks that allow one to be erased/written while the other runs code.
Does the STM32L4R5VIT6 have an integrated SMPS step-down converter?
Yes. As part of the STM32L4+ Series, the STM32L4R5VIT6 integrates a DC-DC step-down SMPS in addition to the legacy LDO regulator. Designers can choose either the SMPS path (higher efficiency at moderate load, ideal for battery-powered wearables) or the LDO path (lowest noise for analog/RF sections) via the PWR control register. The package has dedicated VCORE and VDD pins to support both rails.
What is the difference between STM32L4R5VIT6 and STM32L4S5VIT6?
Both share the same 100-pin LQFP package, ARM Cortex-M4 core at 120 MHz, 2 MB Flash and 640 KB SRAM, but the STM32L4S5 adds hardware cryptography (AES-256, SHA-256, secure firmware install) plus an OTFDEC engine for encrypted XiP execution from external Octal-SPI Flash. For non-cryptographic applications the L4R5VIT6 is the lower-cost option; for secure-boot or IP-protected designs choose the L4S5.
Where can I download the STM32L4R5VIT6 datasheet PDF?
The official STMicroelectronics datasheet covering STM32L4R5xx family (which includes the STM32L4R5VIT6) is hosted at https://www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/stm32l4r5vi.pdf. The same datasheet section also covers the LQFP-100 pinout (pin 1 marker on top-left), absolute maximum ratings, and the LQFP100 mechanical drawing (14x14 mm body, 0.5 mm pitch).
What is the difference between STM32L4R5VIT6 and STM32L4R5VGT6?
Both are part of the same STM32L4R5 family, but the VGT6 suffix indicates a 100-pin LQFP (14x14) while 'I' suffix variants, like the VIT6, indicate a 100-pin LQFP industrial-grade temperature range packaging from the same 14x14 LQFP-100 die. Functionally they share the same 2 MB Flash and 640 KB SRAM; the difference is mostly in temperature grade ordering code and reel-packaging options.
What package is the STM32L4R5VIT6 housed in?
The 'V' in STM32L4R5VIT6 designates the 100-pin LQFP package (LQFP-100, 14x14 mm body, 0.5 mm pitch, surface mount with low-profile gull-wing leads). Per the datasheet drawing, pin 1 is at the top-left with a depression marker, and the package has an exposed thermal pad variant managed by the same drawing family. The 100-pin option provides the highest GPIO count (83 typical) versus the 64-pin or 48-pin L4R5 variants.

STM32L4R5VIT6 vs STM32H753XIH6 - which is better for low-power wearable design?
For a wearable with battery life constraints, the STM32L4R5VIT6 is the better choice. The L4R5 has integrated SMPS reaching sub-µA STOP current and Cortex-M4 at 120 MHz, while the STM32H753XIH6 (Cortex-M7 at 480 MHz, 100-pin TFBGA package) draws far higher active current and offers roughly 4x the MIPS - useful for graphics or DSP but overkill for sensor hubs. Choose L4R5VIT6 for ultra-low-power; H753 only if you need the M7 DSP pipeline.
When should I choose STM32L4R5VIT6 over STM32F765ZIT6?
Choose the STM32L4R5VIT6 whenever ultra-low-power STOP/STANDBY modes, sub-µA quiescent current, or coin-cell operation matter - the L4R5 family integrates an SMPS, lowers active current to ~100 µA/MHz, and adds 2 MB Flash with dual-bank OTA. The STM32F765ZIT6 is a Cortex-M7 part at 216 MHz with Ethernet and TFT LCD but no L4-class low-power modes, so reach for it only when you need M7 DSP/graphics throughput.
Is the STM32L4R5VIT6 pin-compatible with any GigaDevice GD32 alternative?
Direct cross-brand pin-compatible drop-in alternatives in LQFP-100 with 2 MB Flash and Cortex-M4 are limited; common GigaDevice GD32 options (GD32F450, GD32F470) require pin mapping review and different firmware drivers because of register-set differences. Use ST's family table for STM32L4R9 (which adds MIPI-DSI) and STM32L4S5 (adds crypto) before evaluating cross-brand GD32 substitutes.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the STM32L4R5VIT6?
The best drop-in replacement for the STM32L4R5VIT6 within the ST family is the STM32L4R5VGT6 (different order suffix in the same LQFP-100 14x14 mm package) for routine second sourcing, or the STM32L4S5VIT6 if you also need the integrated AES/SHA hardware crypto for secure boot, or the STM32L4R9VIT6 if your design needs the MIPI-DSI display interface - all share the same 100-pin LQFP pinout and footprint.
What are the key specifications of the STM32L4R5VIT6 that engineers should know?
Key STM32L4R5VIT6 specifications: ARM Cortex-M4 with FPU at 120 MHz (150 DMIPS, 273 CoreMark), 2 MB dual-bank Flash, 640 KB SRAM, 1.71-3.6 V supply, integrated SMPS, USB OTG FS, two 5 Msps 12-bit ADCs, two 12-bit DACs, DFSDM, 6x USART, 3x SPI, 3x I2C, two CAN, SDMMC, Octal-SPI, FSMC, LCD-TFT controller, sub-µA STOP/STANDBY modes, and 100-pin LQFP (14x14 mm) package.

Guide de sélection

Choose the STM32L4R5VIT6 when your design needs the highest integration level in ST's ultra-low-power MCU portfolio: 2 MB dual-bank Flash for OTA, 640 KB SRAM for graphics/audio buffering, 120 MHz Cortex-M4 for sensor-fusion DSP, plus an integrated SMPS to maximize battery life. The LQFP-100 14x14 mm package gives 83 GPIO in an easy-to-prototype footprint. Move to the STM32L4S5VIT6 if you need hardware AES-256/SHA-256 crypto for secure boot and IP protection. Move to the STM32L4R9VIT6 if the application requires a MIPI-DSI display rather than LCD-TFT. For designs that can operate at 80 MHz with 1 MB Flash and no SMPS, the STM32L471ZGT6 in LQFP-144 (or its LQFP-64/48/100 family members) cut unit cost significantly. If your BOM budget is much tighter and 1 MB Flash with 320 KB SRAM suffices, evaluate the STM32L496VGY6TR in WLCSP or smaller LQFPs.

Principaux différenciateurs

  • Highest memory and clock in the L4+ family (vs STM32L496VGY6TR (1 MB Flash, 80 MHz))
  • Integrated SMPS step-down converter reduces active current (vs STM32L471ZGT6 (LDO only))
  • Dual-bank 2 MB Flash with read-while-write OTA (vs STM32L4R9VIT6 family variant)

Notes de conception

The STM32L4R5VIT6 supports two power-rail modes selectable via the RCC->APB1ENR PWREN and the PWR->CR LPDS/SMPSEN bits: integrated SMPS step-down (lower active current, ~50% saving on the core rail) or legacy LDO (lowest analog noise on AVDD). For wearable designs route the LQFP-100 VCORE and VDD pins to dedicated planes and follow ST's AN4621 'STM32L4+ SMPS layout' guide for placement. Decouple VCORE with 4.7 µF X7R 0402/0603 ceramic + 100 nF X7R 0201 at the IC pins, and place them within 2 mm of the exposed-pad vias to suppress switching ripple during 32 MHz PLL operation.

The 100-pin LQFP (14x14 mm body, no exposed thermal pad on this package variant) has a theta_JA around 65 °C/W on a 2s2p JEDEC board. At full active MIPS (120 MHz/150 DMIPS) the 3.3 V core draws ~10 mA, so self-heating typically adds 4-7 °C. Ensure the PCB has at least 1 oz copper on all four inner planes connected to GND; for industrial designs operating to +85 °C ambient we recommend keeping junction rise under 60 °C, which is achievable because the 10 mA core current is far below the 100 mA thermal ceiling of this package.

Avoid three common pitfalls. (1) Don't leave the L4+ internal SMPS inductor unpopulated - the datasheet pin map shows LQFP-100 pins 13-14 are VLCD/VREFBUF-adjacent, but the SMPS coil goes on pins 99-100 (PWR_L1/PWR_L2); absence will leave the core unpowered. (2) The 100-pin LQFP and the 100-pin TFBGA are not pin-compatible despite identical pin counts - footprint pads are different. (3) When migrating from STM32L4 (non-Plus) to STM32L4R5, the PWR->CR register offsets and the new SMPS calibration NVM bits (SMPS_FORCED) require re-running your firmware's SystemClock_Config() against the L4+ CubeMX initialization template, or the device may hard-fault during PLL startup.
