PIC16F15356-E/SP סקירה

The Microchip Technology PIC16F15356-E/SP is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller featuring 28KB of Flash program memory, 2KB of RAM, and a maximum CPU clock of 32MHz, packaged in a 28-pin SPDIP (0.300 inch / 7.62mm body) through-hole form factor. It integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) including four Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs), Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), 4 PWMs, 2 EUSARTs, SPI/I2C, plus analog blocks such as a 10-bit ADC, 5-bit DAC, and comparator, delivering the Intelligent Analog and CIP combination that defines the PIC16F153xx family.

What is a PIC XLP microcontroller? A PIC XLP (eXtreme Low-Power) microcontroller is an 8-bit CMOS MCU family from Microchip Technology engineered for battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications. PIC16F153xx devices sit in the broader PIC MCU taxonomy: 8-bit MCU -> PIC16 family -> enhanced mid-range core -> PIC16F153xx sub-family with CIP and Intelligent Analog integration. The XLP designation indicates the part supports sleep currents in the nanoamp range, making it suitable for applications where quiescent draw dominates battery life.

Key features of the PIC16F15356-E/SP include 28KB Flash (16K x 14 words), 2KB SRAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, four 16-bit PWMs with Complementary Waveform Generator, four Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs) implementing user-defined digital glue logic in hardware, and a peripheral pin select (PPS) mapping scheme that lets designers remap digital peripherals to almost any I/O pin. The device operates from 2.3V to 5.5V across an industrial temperature range of -40C to +125C, supports ICD debugging, and offers a 10-bit ADC with up to 24 channels depending on package. The integrated 5-bit DAC and comparator enable closed-loop analog control without external components.

Technical depth: the PIC16F15356 uses the enhanced mid-range 8-bit core with a hardware multiplier and 49 instructions, executes most instructions in one instruction cycle (4 clock cycles), and supports interrupt prioritization with hardware context save/restore. The instruction set is upward compatible with the PIC10/12/16 baseline and enhanced mid-range cores, easing migration from older PIC16 designs. PPS and CLCs effectively replace discrete logic ICs, reducing BOM cost and PCB area.

Typical applications include home appliances, industrial sensor nodes, low-power IoT endpoints, motor control (especially with the CWG and 4x PWM block), and battery-powered instruments running from 2x AA cells or coin cells. The 28-pin SPDIP package is preferred for hand prototyping, hobbyist builds, and through-hole manufacturing where wave soldering is required.

Design consideration: when migrating from older PIC16F1xxx designs, ensure the PPS register initialization is performed early in the firmware; without PPS unlock sequence the peripherals default to legacy pin assignments and code written assuming PPS flexibility may not function. For low-power designs, switch to sleep and use the device's RTCC, IOC, or CLC wake sources rather than polling loops.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, parametric drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone, with cross-references to PIC16F15355/15354 and PIC16F15256 SPDIP variants in the same family.

יישומים טיפוסיים

PIC16F15356-E/SP מתאים עבור 6 יישוםs: Home Appliance Control, Industrial Sensor Nodes, Battery-Powered IoT Endpoints, Motor Control (BLDC / Stepper), User Interface & Display Controllers, Automotive Body & Comfort Electronics.

🏭

Home Appliance Control

The PIC16F15356-E/SP fits home appliance control because its 32MHz enhanced mid-range core runs BLDC and PFC state machines in real time without burdening a higher-cost MCU. The 4x PWM with Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) drives three-phase motor half-bridges with programmable dead-band, while the 10-bit ADC samples motor current and supply voltage for closed-loop control. With 28KB Flash and 2KB RAM, the part can host the motor-control algorithm plus user interface logic and an IEC 60730 Class B self-test library. XLP sleep currents in the nanoamp range let a refrigerator or washing-machine control board enter standby while remaining responsive to button interrupts. The 2.3-5.5V VDD range covers 3.3V logic boards and legacy 5V designs without level shifters, and the 28-pin SPDIP package supports wave-soldered through-hole manufacturing common in white goods.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The PIC16F15356-E/SP is well-suited to industrial sensor nodes because the 4x Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs) replace external 74-series glue logic, reducing BOM cost on PLC backplanes and 4-20mA loop-powered transmitters. CLCs run without CPU intervention, so signal conditioning (debouncing, edge detection, frequency measurement) continues in sleep mode and wakes the core only on threshold crossings, extending battery life in wireless sensor networks. The 10-bit ADC with internal 5-bit DAC implements a complete analog front-end for bridge sensors, RTDs, and thermistors. With Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), designers remap UART, SPI, and I2C to any I/O pin, simplifying PCB layout when adding new sensor ICs. The -40C to +125C industrial temperature rating supports outdoor and process-plant deployments, and the 28-pin SPDIP package withstands conformal coating and through-hole assembly used in industrial modules.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Endpoints

The PIC16F15356-E/SP excels in battery-powered IoT endpoints because XLP (eXtreme Low-Power) technology delivers nanoamp sleep currents and microamp active currents, allowing years of operation from 2x AA cells. The CLCs, RTCC, and interrupt-on-change wake sources support event-driven firmware where the core spends most of its life in sleep and wakes only on sensor thresholds or button presses, a key parameter for energy-harvesting designs. The 2.3V minimum VDD supports direct connection to a single Li-ion or LiSOCl2 primary cell without boost converters. With 2x EUSART plus SPI and I2C, the part can host LoRa, Sub-GHz, or BLE modules and an external sensor bus simultaneously. The 28KB Flash holds application code plus a bootloader for OTA firmware updates, and the 28-pin SPDIP package suits hand-built prototypes and small-batch IoT products.

🏭

Motor Control (BLDC / Stepper)

The PIC16F15356-E/SP is engineered for BLDC and stepper motor control because the 4x 16-bit PWM channels with the Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) drive three-phase half-bridges with programmable dead-band and automatic fault shut-down, a hard requirement for safe motor commutation. The 32MHz core executes sensorless back-EMF zero-crossing algorithms or FOC observer code in real time at 8 MIPS, eliminating the need for an external DSP. The on-chip comparator and 5-bit DAC implement hardware current limiting that protects the H-bridge without software overhead. With 28KB Flash, the firmware can include sensorless startup routines, multiple speed profiles, and IEC 60730 safety diagnostics. The 2.3-5.5V VDD range supports 3.3V and 5V gate drivers, and the -40C to +125C industrial temperature rating covers automotive underhood and industrial cabinet environments.

📱

User Interface & Display Controllers

The PIC16F15356-E/SP works as a user-interface / display controller because the 4x CLCs and 4x PWMs can drive LED matrices, RGB status indicators, and segment-LCD charge pumps without external logic, while the 2x EUSART and SPI/I2C ports communicate with host MCUs or capacitive-touch ICs. The 32MHz core scans keypads and updates displays at high refresh rates without burdening the main application processor. With Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), display and touch controller signals can be remapped for optimal PCB routing, which is critical when designing compact HMI panels. The 28KB Flash holds rich menu structures, animation tables, and multilingual string databases, while 2KB RAM keeps display framebuffers for small LCDs. The industrial -40C to +125C rating supports outdoor kiosks and appliance front panels, and the 28-pin SPDIP package is preferred for hand-prototyped HMI modules.

🚗

Automotive Body & Comfort Electronics

The PIC16F15356-E/SP (industrial -E grade) fits automotive body and comfort applications such as seat controllers, mirror modules, HVAC blend doors, and LED lighting drivers because the -40C to +125C operating temperature and 2.3-5.5V VDD cover 12V automotive rails after a simple LDO drop. The 4x PWMs with CWG drive LED strings with programmable fade and dim curves without CPU intervention, reducing software complexity in lighting modules. The 4x CLCs implement LIN-style PWM decoding and discrete signal conditioning in hardware. While the -E grade is not AEC-Q100 qualified (the -I grade and Q1 suffix variants are), the part is widely used in non-safety automotive body electronics where cost dominates. The 28KB Flash supports multi-channel control tables, while the 2KB RAM keeps real-time scheduling buffers and CAN/LIN message queues.

Estimated: at 32MHz active current is typically ~2-3 mA and sleep current is ~30 nA (XLP nanoWatt XLP mode). For battery-powered designs, keep the CPU in sleep and use CLC, IOC, or RTCC wake sources. Place a 0.1uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin, plus a bulk 1uF-10uF capacitor if the supply trace is long. AVdd and AVss should be tied to Vdd/Vss when no analog peripherals are used, or filtered separately when ADC accuracy matters.

Place the 28-pin SPDIP on a 2.54mm grid and route all 8 power pins (VDD/VSS) with wide traces. Keep the ICSP clock/data traces (RB6/RB7) short and away from switching signals to avoid programming glitches. When using the ADC, surround analog pins with a digital ground island and route analog signals over a continuous ground pour to minimize digital switching noise coupling. The exposed pad variants (QFN, MLP) require thermal vias to the inner ground plane.

Always configure the PPS unlock sequence (PPSLOCKED = 0, write key, configure PPS, relock) before peripheral pin mapping takes effect. When using the CWG, configure the dead-band registers before enabling the PWM outputs to avoid shoot-through in half-bridges. The MCLR pin can be disabled by configuration bit; if disabled, only ICD can recover the part, so leave MCLR enabled for production prototypes. When migrating from older PIC16F1xxx, verify the PPS registers are reset to default before ICCP programmers can identify the device.

For SPI buses above 4 MHz, add 33 ohm series resistors near the SDO pin to dampen reflections on long PCB traces. The I2C bus requires pull-up resistors (typically 4.7k at 100kHz, 2.2k at 400kHz) selected per bus capacitance; for SMBus compliance, use 100kHz max. The EUSART in RS-485 mode requires a direction-control GPIO; configure this GPIO via PPS for maximum board layout flexibility.
