AD8250ARMZ
AD8250ARMZ - 10MHz iCMOS PGIA, G=1/2/5/10 | Analog Devices
The Analog Devices AD8250ARMZ is a 10 MHz bandwidth, digitally programmable-gain instrumentation amplifier (PGIA) offering pin-selectable gains of 1, 2, 5, and 10 in a compact 10-lead MSOP (RM-10) package. It features a GΩ-class input impedance, 20 V/µs slew rate, fast 615 ns (max) settling time to 0.001%, and -110 dB THD, making it well suited to bridge-type sensors and high-sample-rate analog-to-digital converters.
An instrumentation amplifier (INA / PGIA) is a closed-loop gain block that combines high common-mode rejection (CMRR), high input impedance, and a single-resistor-programmable differential gain. PGIA variants add a digital interface to switch gain on the fly, which lets one analog front-end handle widely varying sensor signals (thermocouples, strain gauges, shunt resistors, biopotential electrodes) without an external mechanical relay or analog switch network. The AD8250 occupies the mid-bandwidth, low-power niche between classic three-op-amp INAs such as the AD620 and the higher-frequency AD8421 family.
Key specifications include 10 MHz small-signal bandwidth (G=1), 20 V/µs slew rate, 1.5 nV/√Hz input voltage noise density, 75 µV (max) input offset voltage, 0.5 µV/°C (max) offset drift, and a wide ±5 V to ±15 V (or 5 V to 30 V single-supply) operating range. The MSOP-10 footprint consumes roughly 60% less board area than an SOIC-8 INA, while parallel digital gain-select inputs simplify FPGA/MCU control. Quiescent current is typically 4.5 mA on ±15 V supplies.
Architecturally, the AD8250 uses Analog Devices' iCMOS process, which combines high-voltage bipolar transistors on a sub-micron CMOS wafer to deliver wide supply range and low power without sacrificing ESD/EMC robustness. The topology is a classic three-op-amp INA, but the feedback resistors are switched by matched MOSFET networks rather than mechanical relays, eliminating glitch-free concerns of electromechanical switching. Internal overdrive protection prevents damage when the input exceeds the supply rails by up to ±25 V.
Typical applications include industrial process control front-ends, weigh scales and load-cell amplifiers, ECG and biopotential signal conditioning, ATE (automatic test equipment) programmable-gain stages, and wide-dynamic-range data-acquisition (DAQ) systems driving 16-/18-/24-bit ADCs such as the AD7612, AD7606, or AD7768. The transparent gain mode also supports legacy pin-strap designs without an FPGA.
When designing with the AD8250, route the gain-select logic lines away from the input traces to preserve CMRR, and use a low-impedance ground plane beneath the package. Reference-design AN-1385 demonstrates -111 dB THD at 1 kHz and 91 dB SNR when paired with the AD7612 and an ADG1209 mux, validating the part for precision DAQ.
