ATMEGA48A-PU 概要

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA48A-PU is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 4KB ISP Flash memory, 256B EEPROM, 512B SRAM, and 23 general-purpose I/O lines, rated for 20MHz operation at 4.5V to 5.5V supply, housed in a 28-pin PDIP (PU) through-hole package.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripheral functions such as timers, serial interfaces, and ADCs. MCUs sit at the lowest level of the embedded-systems hierarchy, controlling a single dedicated function within a larger electronic system, and the 8-bit AVR family is one of the most widely used MCU architectures for cost-sensitive, low-complexity control tasks.

The ATmega48A implements the advanced AVR RISC architecture with 131 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle, giving up to 20 MIPS throughput at 20MHz. On-chip peripherals include two 8-bit timer/counters, one 16-bit timer with compare modes, a 10-bit 6-channel ADC, USART, SPI, and I2C-compatible two-wire interface. The device also offers a programmable watchdog timer, internal calibrated RC oscillator, and six sleep modes for low-power designs.

The AVR core uses a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses and 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing single-cycle access that eliminates the bottleneck of the classic accumulator architecture. In-system programmable (ISP) Flash enables firmware updates on the assembled PCB through SPI without removal of the device.

Typical applications include hobbyist and educational projects such as Arduino-style boards, small industrial sensors and actuators, home appliances, battery chargers, and motor control circuits. The 28-pin DIP package makes it especially popular for breadboard prototyping, through-hole production runs, and repair/retrofit of legacy designs.

Design consideration: full 20MHz speed and flash self-programming are guaranteed only at 4.5V to 5.5V; at lower voltages the maximum clock frequency derates significantly, so check the frequency-versus-voltage curve before combining a 3.3V rail with a high crystal frequency.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, pin-compatible alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a single citable reference for the ATMEGA48A-PU.

ATMEGA48A-PU の用途: 6 件s: Arduino-Style Hobbyist and Educational Boards, Small Industrial Sensors and Actuators, Home Appliance Control, Battery Chargers and Power Management, DC and Stepper Motor Control, Legacy Repair, Retrofit, and Through-Hole Production.

🧩

Arduino-Style Hobbyist and Educational Boards

The ATMEGA48A-PU fits hobbyist and educational embedded projects because its 28-pin PDIP package plugs directly into breadboards and DIP sockets, and its 20MHz AVR core with 131 single-cycle instructions is approachable for learners. With 4KB Flash and 512B SRAM it hosts compact bare-metal C/assembly programs, SPI/USART demos, and simple sensor readouts using the 10-bit ADC. Its ISP programming over PB3/PB4/PB5 plus RESET allows programming with inexpensive USBasp tools, so no debugger investment is required. For projects needing Arduino bootloaders and library ecosystems, the pin-compatible ATMEGA328P-PU in the same socket is the recommended upgrade, keeping the PCB unchanged.

🏭

Small Industrial Sensors and Actuators

In industrial sensing nodes, the ATMEGA48A-PU provides a cost-optimized control core: its 10-bit 6-channel ADC digitizes analog transducer signals, the USART links to RS-485/RS-232 transceivers, and the TWI (I2C) interface reads external EEPROMs or digital sensors at 5V levels that tolerate electrically noisy industrial environments. Operating from -40C to +85C and rated at 4.5V to 5.5V, it runs directly from industrial 5V rails without level shifting. The watchdog timer provides autonomous fault recovery in unattended installations. Use the Power-down sleep mode between acquisition cycles to cut average consumption in battery-backed field nodes.

🔧

Home Appliance Control

White goods and small appliance controllers benefit from the ATMEGA48A-PU's combination of three timer/counters (two 8-bit, one 16-bit with compare modes), 23 GPIO lines, and internal calibrated oscillator. The 16-bit timer generates precise PWM for heater or motor phase control, while button interfaces and LED indicators map naturally onto the remaining port pins. In-system programmable Flash lets manufacturers update firmware on assembled boards during final test or field service without desoldering the device. Running the internal 8MHz RC oscillator removes the crystal and its cost, and the six sleep modes support standby power compliance targets.

⚡

Battery Chargers and Power Management

Smart battery charger supervisory circuits use the ATMEGA48A-PU's 10-bit ADC to monitor cell voltage and current via shunt sensing, and its 8-bit timers to generate charging PWM with adjustable duty cycle. The programmable watchdog plus brown-out detection provides safe behavior under supply anomalies, and the 256B EEPROM stores charge-profile parameters and cycle counters across power cycles. Because full 20MHz speed requires 4.5V to 5.5V, designs using a single-cell lithium rail should clock the part from the internal RC oscillator at lower frequency, or regulate a clean 5V domain for the MCU while power electronics run elsewhere on the board.

⚙️

DC and Stepper Motor Control

The ATMEGA48A-PU drives small DC and stepper motors using its 16-bit timer's compare channels for PWM generation and the 8-bit timers for tachometer input capture or quadrature decoding in software. At 20MHz the core delivers 20 MIPS, sufficient for closed-loop speed control of hobby-class motors with PI loops executed in fixed-point math within 512B SRAM. High-side/low-side drive stages are commanded through GPIO and PWM pins into MOSFET gate drivers. Note that at large PWM loads the ADC ground reference should be taken from a star ground near AVCC (pin 20) to keep 10-bit conversions free of motor-switching noise.

🖥️

Legacy Repair, Retrofit, and Through-Hole Production

For repairing or remanufacturing legacy equipment that used DIP-packaged AVR or PIC MCUs, the ATMEGA48A-PU's through-hole 28-PDIP format allows direct socket insertion without adapters. Its 4KB Flash accommodates replacement firmware reimplementing classic controller logic, and the ATmega48/88/168/328 pin compatibility lets a service shop stock one socket-compatible family with four memory grades, swapping the ATMEGA328P-PU when larger programs are needed. In low-volume through-hole production where wave soldering is retained, the DIP package avoids the reflow profiling and moisture-sensitivity handling that QFP/SMD MCU packages require, simplifying mixed-technology assembly.

You can order it on XAIPART, LCSC, DigiKey, Ampheo, and other franchised distributors. Because it is an active part in Microchip's catalog, ongoing supply is expected, but always confirm real-time stock and lead time with your distributor before placing production orders.
What is the difference between ATMEGA48A-PU and ATMEGA328P-PU?
The main difference is memory size: the ATmega48A has 4KB Flash, 512B SRAM, and 256B EEPROM, while the ATmega328P offers 32KB Flash, 2KB SRAM, and 1KB EEPROM - eight times the flash. Both are pin-to-pin compatible in the 28-pin PDIP package and share the same AVR core, peripherals, and 20MHz speed. The ATmega328P additionally includes picoPower low-energy technology. Choose the ATmega48A for cost-optimized small programs and the 328P when firmware needs headroom, such as Arduino-class applications.
What is the difference between ATMEGA48A-PU and ATMEGA48-20PI?
The ATMEGA48A-PU and ATMEGA48-20PI are functionally the same AVR device with 4KB Flash, 20MHz speed, and identical 28-pin PDIP pinout - the difference is the silicon revision and temperature grading. The 'A' version is the newer ATmega48A revision with lower power characteristics, while the 20PI carries the industrial temperature designation in its suffix. Both are drop-in interchangeable on the same PCB footprint, and firmware written for one runs unchanged on the other within the same memory limits.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA48A-PU?
The best drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA48A-PU is the ATMEGA48-20PI (or the site-listed ATMEGA48-20PI variant), which shares the identical 28-pin PDIP footprint, 4KB Flash, and 20MHz rating. If you need more memory without a PCB change, the ATMEGA88-PU, ATMEGA168-PU, and ATMEGA328P-PU are pin-compatible upward migrations in the same package - the same firmware runs with unchanged pin functions while Flash grows from 4KB to 8KB, 16KB, or 32KB respectively. Verify the lock bits and fuse settings during migration.
Can ATMEGA328P-PU replace ATMEGA48A-PU in an existing design?
Yes, the ATmega328P-PU can physically replace the ATMEGA48A-PU because both use the identical 28-pin PDIP pinout and the same peripheral register set at the ATmega48 feature level. The ATmega328P provides 32KB Flash, 2KB SRAM, and 1KB EEPROM, so any ATmega48A program fits. Two cautions: the fuse bit map and some signature-row addresses differ between generations, so re-check fuse settings, and the bootloader or ISP programmer must support the 328P signature. Unit cost is higher, but the migration removes any future memory ceiling.
When should I choose ATMEGA48A-PU over ATMEGA88-PU or ATMEGA328P-PU?
Choose the ATMEGA48A-PU when your compiled firmware fits within 4KB Flash, 512B SRAM, and 256B EEPROM - it is the lowest-cost member of the pin-compatible ATmega48/88/168/328 family. If the program might grow, or you need Arduino-class libraries, choose the ATmega88-PU (8KB), ATmega168-PU (16KB), or ATmega328P-PU (32KB) instead, all in the same DIP-28 footprint. Since the pinout and peripherals are identical, picking the 48A for cost and migrating upward later on the same PCB carries essentially zero redesign risk.
Is ATMEGA48A-PU suitable for Arduino projects?
Yes, with caveats. The ATMEGA48A-PU shares the ATmega328P pinout and core architecture, and community bootloader variants exist for the ATmega48. However, its 4KB Flash and 512B SRAM are far below the 32KB/2KB of the Arduino Uno's ATmega328P, so the standard Arduino bootloader and most libraries will not fit. For serious Arduino development use the ATmega328P-PU in the same DIP-28 socket; use the ATmega48A-PU when you are programming bare-metal AVR code or writing small custom applications in C/assembly via ISP.
What is the supply voltage range of ATMEGA48A-PU?
The ATMEGA48A-PU operates from 4.5V to 5.5V supply voltage for guaranteed full-speed 20MHz operation, per the chipdig specification data (4.5 to 5.5 volts). The ATmega48A family also supports lower-voltage operation, with the FindIC listing 2.5V/3.3V/5V operation, but the maximum clock frequency derates as the supply drops - at 2.5V the device is limited to roughly 4MHz. Always consult the frequency-versus-voltage curve in the Microchip datasheet when running below 4.5V, and note the ADC reference options differ at low rails.
How do I program the ATMEGA48A-PU and what tools are compatible?
The ATMEGA48A-PU is programmed through its SPI ISP interface using pins PB3 (MOSI), PB4 (MISO), PB5 (SCK), and RESET, compatible with standard AVR ISP programmers, USBasp, AVRISP mkII, and Microchip's PICkit/AVR toolchain. The device supports In-System Programming so it can be reprogrammed on the assembled PCB. Debugging is via debugWIRE, which shares the RESET pin - a single-wire interface supported by Microchip MPLAB/Atmel Studio with an emulator. An ISP header of six pins (VCC, GND, RESET, MOSI, MISO, SCK) should be reserved in the PCB layout.
Where to download the ATMEGA48A-PU datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA48A-PU datasheet PDF can be downloaded from the official Microchip product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega48A, which hosts the current complete document covering electrical characteristics, pin configuration, register descriptions, and application information. Mirror copies are also available on aggregator sites such as AllDataSheet (both a 32-page and a 50-page revision exist for the 4/8/16/32KB family document). Always prefer the Microchip website version to ensure you have the latest revision and errata for the ATmega48A silicon.
Where can I find the ATMEGA48A-PU pinout for the 28-pin DIP package?
The ATMEGA48A-PU pinout is documented in the Microchip datasheet pin-configuration section for the 28-pin PDIP. Pin 1 is PC6/RESET, pin 7 is VCC, pin 8 is GND, pins 9-10 are PB6/XTAL1 and PB7/XTAL2 for the crystal, pins 17-19 carry PB3/MOSI, PB4/MISO, and PB5/SCK for SPI and ISP programming, pin 20 is AVCC, pin 21 is AREF, and pins 23-28 are the PC0-PC5 analog/digital port with PC4/SDA and PC5/SCL for I2C. A full pin-by-pin diagram appears on this page.
What are the power consumption and sleep mode characteristics of ATMEGA48A-PU?
The ATMEGA48A-PU offers six software-selectable sleep modes - Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, Standby, and Extended Standby - to minimize consumption in battery applications. Power-down mode halts the oscillator and disables most clocking, reducing current to the microamp range, with the watchdog timer or external interrupts available for wake-up. Exact active and sleep current figures at 5V and 20MHz versus the datasheet current-versus-frequency graphs should be used for battery sizing; the ATmega48A revision improves on the older ATmega48 power figures.
What is the best non-Microchip (cross-brand) equivalent for ATMEGA48A-PU?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in equivalent for the ATMEGA48A-PU - no other manufacturer makes a pin-compatible 28-pin DIP replacement for the AVR ATmega48. Functionally similar 28-pin DIP microcontrollers include the Microchip PIC16C65B-20I/P and PIC16F-class parts, but they use a different pinout, architecture, and toolchain, requiring a PCB and firmware redesign. If cross-brand migration is required, the realistic approach is a board respin using a PIC16 or an STM8 in a DIP package rather than a substitution. For drop-in needs, stay within the ATmega48/88/168/328 family.
Is the ATMEGA48A-PU RoHS compliant and what is its lifecycle status?
The ATMEGA48A-PU is an active part in Microchip's catalog, with the chipdig life-cycle data explicitly listing its stage as ACTIVE, meaning it is in production with no end-of-life announced. Microchip's AVR through-hole parts in this family are generally offered in RoHS-compliant lead-free finishes; the LCSC product detail page provides the exact RoHS and REACH documentation for part C1337386. Confirm the compliance certificates for your specific date code and order lot on the distributor page before finalizing documentation for regulated markets.

選定ガイド

Choose the ATMEGA48A-PU when your firmware compiles within 4KB Flash, 512B SRAM, and 256B EEPROM and you need the lowest-cost 5V, 20MHz AVR in a hand-solderable through-hole package - typical for small appliance controllers, simple sensor nodes, and DIP-socket repair work. Choose the ATMEGA48-20PI if the newer 'A' revision is unavailable; it is a direct drop-in on the same footprint. If program size is uncertain or you want Arduino bootloader compatibility, step up within the same socket to the ATMEGA88-PU (8KB), ATMEGA168-PU (16KB), or ATMEGA328P-PU (32KB, picoPower) - all pin-to-pin compatible so no PCB change is needed, at progressively higher unit cost. If your design runs at 3.3V, verify the speed derating first, or consider an L-series grade. There is no true cross-brand drop-in for this footprint; leaving the AVR family means a board respin.

設計ノート

The ATMEGA48A-PU guarantees 20MHz full-speed operation only from 4.5V to 5.5V. Below 4.5V the maximum safe clock frequency derates per the datasheet frequency-versus-voltage curve (roughly 4MHz at 2.5V). Run the internal calibrated 8MHz RC oscillator at 3.3V or 2.5V rails, and disable the brown-out detector or re-select its threshold in fuses to match the lower rail. Estimated: at 5V and 20MHz with capacitive loads on all 23 I/O lines, dynamic current dominates active consumption, so keep unloaded pins as inputs with pull-ups or outputs low to minimize wasted drive current.

Decouple VCC (pin 7) and AVCC (pin 20) each with a 100nF ceramic capacitor placed within a few millimeters of the pins, plus a bulk 10uF per power domain. AVCC should be connected to VCC through a low-pass filter (e.g., 10 ohm resistor plus 100nF) when the ADC is used, and AREF (pin 21) needs its own 100nF capacitor to GND - never hang a large capacitor directly on AREF when using the internal reference. Keep the analog ground return for pin 22 separate from digital ground until a single star point. Provide a standard 6-pin ISP header (VCC, GND, RESET, MOSI, MISO, SCK) for in-system programming.

Three frequent mistakes with this device: (1) leaving RESET (pin 1) floating - fit a 10k pull-up to VCC; debugWIRE shares this pin and can be accidentally enabled by the DWEN fuse, requiring a high-voltage parallel programmer to recover. (2) Migrating firmware between ATmega48/88/168/328 without re-checking fuse bytes - signature and fuse layouts differ between family generations, so always read the target signature before ISP programming. (3) Exceeding 20MHz below 4.5V, which violates the speed grade and causes erratic execution. Verify clock source fuses (internal RC vs external crystal on PB6/PB7) before first power-up of a new board.
