PIC16C62B-04/SO 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16C62B-04/SO is a 4 MHz 8-bit CMOS RISC microcontroller with 3.5KB (2K x 14) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory and 128 bytes of RAM, housed in a 28-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body package. The PIC16C62B-04/SO integrates 22 digital I/O lines organized across multiple ports, two 8-bit timer/counters, a Watchdog Timer, an analog comparator, and a 13-channel 8-bit ADC that shares its inputs with digital I/O, all inside a single 8-bit RISC core with a 35-instruction set.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer based on an 8-bit data path; it belongs to the broader hierarchy of embedded microcontrollers -> microcontrollers -> microprocessors -> semiconductor ICs. Microchip's PIC10/12/16 family in particular targets low-cost, deterministic control of simple to moderately complex embedded tasks where small code size, low power, and ease of development with MPLAB tools matter more than raw compute throughput. The PIC16C62B sits in the mid-range PIC16 OTP lineup that helped establish the PIC architecture in commercial and industrial control.

Key features include 4 MHz maximum clock (200 ns instruction cycle), 14-bit wide instructions, 8-level deep hardware stack, 4 oscillator options (RC, LP, XT, HS), programmable code protection, in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) capability, and an operating voltage range of 4.0 V to 5.5 V. The device supports both commercial (0C to +70C) and industrial temperature grades within the family, with brown-out detection and Power-on Reset supporting reliable operation in noisy electrical environments.

The PIC16C62B uses Microchip's classic Harvard architecture, separating program and data buses so that an instruction fetch and a data read can occur in the same cycle, which is one reason PIC cores deliver deterministic interrupt latency and high code density. The integrated ADC uses successive-approximation conversion with 8-bit resolution, suitable for monitoring slow-changing analog signals such as battery voltage, sensor outputs, or potentiometer positions rather than high-bandwidth signals.

Typical applications include appliance controls, HVAC fan and damper control, small consumer electronics, automotive body modules, remote sensors, simple motor control loops, and battery-powered instrumentation where the OTP program memory and small footprint are acceptable. Designers choose the PIC16C62B-04/SO over flash-based PICs when the firmware is finalized and unit cost is paramount, and over larger PICs when only a handful of I/O and a small program are required.

When designing with this part, remember that OTP memory cannot be re-programmed in the field; the ICSP programming interface and a UV-erasable windowed variant (JW package) are typically used for prototype development. The 4 MHz speed grade is suitable for low-bandwidth control tasks; for timing-sensitive serial communication or PWM, consider the 20 MHz speed grade. A decoupling capacitor of 0.1 uF placed within 5 mm of VDD is strongly recommended to suppress switching noise from the internal oscillator and I/O transients.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives from Microchip's broader PIC16 mid-range family, and practical design notes not consolidated on a single manufacturer page.

主な用途

PIC16C62B-04/SO の用途: 6 件s: Appliance Control Boards, HVAC Fan and Damper Control, Simple Consumer Electronics, Industrial Sensor Interfaces, Automotive Body Modules (Legacy), Battery-Powered Instrumentation.

🏭

Appliance Control Boards

The PIC16C62B-04/SO suits appliance control boards where the firmware is finalized and unit cost is paramount. Its 3.5 KB OTP memory comfortably holds state-machine logic for washing machine cycles, microwave oven user interfaces, and dishwasher pumps; the 22 I/O lines drive relays, keypads, seven-segment displays, and indicator LEDs without external mux logic. The 4 MHz speed grade is sufficient because typical loop times of 1-10 ms match the human-scale control response. The 28-SOIC footprint is friendly to single-sided wave-solderable boards common in white goods. Brown-out reset and watchdog timer protect against supply brownouts and software lockups in long-lived appliances. The -04/SO's commercial temperature grade (0C to +70C) covers indoor kitchen and laundry environments.

🏭

HVAC Fan and Damper Control

The PIC16C62B-04/SO is well-matched to HVAC damper and fan controllers that read a few thermistors, drive triacs, and accept user inputs from a wall thermostat. The 13-channel 8-bit ADC is enough to scan multiple temperature sensors and potentiometer setpoints at low sample rates; the analog comparator can detect AC zero-crossing for triac phase-angle control. The 4 MHz core is more than sufficient for slow PID loops with 100 ms update periods. Two 8-bit timers can drive PWM outputs to vary fan speed and modulate damper actuators. Brown-out reset and the watchdog timer ensure the controller recovers from supply glitches on long motor leads. The OTP memory is appropriate for fixed HVAC firmware that never changes after production.

📱

Simple Consumer Electronics

The PIC16C62B-04/SO fits small consumer devices like remote controls, electronic toys, and simple kitchen timers where the BOM and per-unit cost dominate the design. 3.5 KB of OTP can hold menu logic, button-debounce state machines, and IR transmission sequences, while 128 bytes of RAM is enough for small lookup tables and user preferences. The 4 MHz speed handles low-rate IR protocols (38 kHz carrier, 1 kbps data) with timing done in software. Brown-out reset and Power-on Reset ensure the device boots cleanly after battery changes. The 28-SOIC package is hand-solderable for prototypes and matches the manufacturing volume of consumer goods.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Interfaces

The PIC16C62B-04/SO works well in factory-floor sensor interface modules that convert analog process signals (4-20 mA, 0-10 V, thermocouple conditioned) into digital values for a PLC or display. The 13-channel 8-bit ADC can scan multiple sensor inputs at modest sample rates, and 22 digital I/O lines interface to relay outputs, status LEDs, and HMI connectors. The commercial temperature grade is acceptable for cabinet-mount modules, while the -I/SO variant supports harsher industrial environments. The 4 MHz CPU is sufficient to debounce inputs, drive character LCDs via software bit-banging, and execute linearization tables in real time.

🚗

Automotive Body Modules (Legacy)

In legacy automotive body modules (interior lighting controllers, seat controllers, mirror switch logic) the PIC16C62B-04/SO is still found in service replacements. Although not AEC-Q100 qualified, the part has been widely used in older vehicle platforms where temperature and EMI conditions are managed at the system level. 22 I/O lines are enough for switch matrix scanning, LED driving, and LIN/analog interfaces. The 4 MHz CPU handles debounce and switch-state reporting at CAN-style update rates via external transceivers. For new automotive designs Microchip strongly recommends AEC-Q100-qualified PIC16F or dsPIC parts instead.

🔋

Battery-Powered Instrumentation

The PIC16C62B-04/SO is a candidate for simple battery-powered instruments like handheld multimeters, basic data loggers, and low-duty-cycle remote sensors. The 4 MHz clock can be gated off most of the time, and the analog comparator plus 8-bit ADC can wake the part periodically to take a measurement before returning to sleep. Brown-out reset is essential for proper behavior on depleted batteries. 3.5 KB of OTP is enough for simple filtering, peak detection, and UART output of measurement results. The commercial temperature grade is acceptable for indoor handheld devices. The OTP memory prevents accidental field reprogramming that could brick an instrument.

What is the PIC16C62B-04/SO?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO is a Microchip Technology 8-bit RISC microcontroller in a 28-pin wide-body SOIC package. According to the manufacturer datasheet (DS30203D family), it integrates 3.5 KB (2K x 14) of OTP program memory, 128 bytes of RAM, a 4 MHz maximum CPU clock, 22 I/O pins, two 8-bit timers, an analog comparator, and a 13-channel 8-bit ADC. It is part of the legacy PIC16C OTP family and is now classified as obsolete.
How much program memory and RAM does the PIC16C62B-04/SO have?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO contains 3.5 KB of OTP program memory organized as 2K x 14-bit words, plus 128 bytes of data RAM. The 14-bit instruction word is wider than the 8-bit data bus, which is characteristic of the PIC16 mid-range architecture and improves code density for control-oriented applications. The 128-byte RAM is shared between general-purpose variables and the hardware register file.
What is the difference between PIC16C62B-04/SO and PIC16C62B-20/SO?
Both parts share the same 28-pin SOIC package, the same 3.5 KB OTP memory, 128 bytes of RAM, and the same 22 I/O and 13-channel ADC, but differ in speed grade. The PIC16C62B-04/SO operates up to 4 MHz (200 ns instruction cycle), while the PIC16C62B-20/SO operates up to 20 MHz (200 ns instruction cycle). They are drop-in pin-compatible for the same SOIC footprint; choose -20 for timing-sensitive UART/PWM applications and -04 for low-bandwidth control.
What is the difference between PIC16C62B-04/SO and PIC16C62B-04I/SO?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO and PIC16C62B-04I/SO share identical electrical and pin specifications; the difference is the operating temperature grade. The -04/SO is the commercial-temperature part (0C to +70C), while the -04I/SO is the industrial-grade variant (-40C to +85C). The I-grade is the appropriate choice for outdoor enclosures, factory floor equipment, and any product that must survive extended temperature exposure.
Where can I buy the PIC16C62B-04/SO and what does it cost?
As of 2026-09-17, the PIC16C62B-04/SO is listed at approximately $3.71 to $4.46 USD depending on quantity and distributor, with DigiKey, Mouser, LCSC, and authorized Microchip distributors carrying stock in single-unit to 1000-piece reels. The part is in the obsolete lifecycle stage, so availability is limited to existing inventory; lead time can extend to several weeks once stock is depleted. Check each distributor for real-time stock and request a quote for higher volumes.
Is the PIC16C62B-04/SO still in production?
No, the PIC16C62B-04/SO is classified as obsolete. Microchip's product page lists the PIC16C62B family in the mature/obsolete segment, and most authorized distributors carry only remaining inventory rather than fresh factory stock. For new designs, Microchip recommends the flash-based PIC16F series (such as PIC16F72-I/SO or PIC16F88-I/SO), which provides in-circuit re-programmability and modern peripherals. Use PIC16C62B-04/SO only for maintenance of existing installed equipment.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C62B-04/SO?
The closest drop-in replacement on the same 28-pin SOIC footprint from Microchip is the PIC16C62B-04I/SO (industrial temperature, otherwise identical), followed by the PIC16C62B-20/SO (faster 20 MHz speed grade in the same package). For new designs, the PIC16F72-I/SO is pin-compatible on 28-pin SOIC and provides flash memory plus a 5-channel 8-bit ADC, though the ADC channel count and peripheral mix differ. Use Microchip's MPLAB and the ICSP interface to migrate code with minimal effort.
Where can I download the PIC16C62B-04/SO datasheet PDF?
The official PIC16C62B-04/SO datasheet is available as Microchip document DS30203D at https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30203D.pdf. The datasheet covers the entire PIC16C62B family (62/62A/62B/63/63A/63B/64A/65A/65B) including all speed grades and packages. The PIC16C62B specifically is described in the 28-pin section, and the SOIC-28 mechanical drawing is provided at the end of the document.
What is the pinout of the PIC16C62B-04/SO 28-pin SOIC?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO 28-pin SOIC pinout assigns VDD to pin 20, VSS to pins 8 and 19, MCLR/VPP to pin 1, OSC1/CLKIN to pin 9, OSC2/CLKOUT to pin 10, and PORTA (RA0-RA3, RA4/T0CKI) to pins 2-6, PORTB (RB0-RB7) to pins 21-28, and PORTC (RC0-RC7) to pins 11-18. RA0-RA3 and RB0-RB3 share with the 13-channel 8-bit ADC inputs. Pin 1 is identified by a dot on the package; numbering proceeds counter-clockwise as you view the IC from the top.
What voltage does the PIC16C62B-04/SO require?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO operates from a single 4.0 V to 5.5 V supply per the Microchip datasheet. Operation below 4.0 V is not guaranteed and the brown-out reset may assert; operation above 5.5 V risks permanent damage. A 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin is required, and a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same rail is recommended for designs that drive high-current loads from the same supply.
How fast is the PIC16C62B-04/SO?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO runs at a maximum 4 MHz external clock, producing a 200 ns instruction cycle because each PIC instruction executes in 4 clock cycles. Throughput is approximately 5 MIPS (million instructions per second) at full speed. The 4 MHz grade is suitable for slow control loops, button scanning, LED driving, and UART communication at modest baud rates, but it cannot comfortably drive high-speed SPI peripherals or fast PWM motor control.
Can the PIC16C62B-04/SO be reprogrammed in the field?
No, the PIC16C62B uses One-Time-Programmable (OTP) memory, so once a program is written it cannot be erased. Field firmware updates are not possible on a -04/SO socket. Microchip offers JW-package windowed variants that can be erased by UV light for prototype development, and ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) lets you program a blank part on a populated PCB, but neither provides field re-programmability. For field-updatable firmware choose a PIC16F flash-based MCU.
What development tools support the PIC16C62B-04/SO?
The PIC16C62B-04/SO is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB XC8 compiler, and the MPLAB PM3 universal programmer for production programming. The PICkit 3 and PICkit 4 in-circuit debuggers support ICSP programming of the device, and the MPLAB SIM software simulator can emulate most peripherals. Code examples and the PICmicro Mid-Range Reference Manual (DS33023A) cover the instruction set, peripherals, and common design patterns.
PIC16C62B-04/SO vs PIC16F72-I/SO - which is better for new designs?
For new designs, the PIC16F72-I/SO is generally the better choice. The PIC16C62B-04/SO is obsolete with limited long-term supply, while the PIC16F72-I/SO uses flash memory that can be re-programmed in-circuit, supports 5 KB of flash plus 128 bytes of RAM, and integrates a 5-channel 8-bit ADC. Both share the same 28-pin SOIC footprint, so existing PCBs can usually accept the PIC16F72-I/SO without layout changes, though the smaller ADC channel count and different peripheral set require a code review.

選定ガイド

Choose the PIC16C62B-04/SO when you need a Microchip 8-bit MCU in the 28-SOIC package, 3.5 KB of OTP is sufficient, your design runs in a 0C to +70C indoor environment, and the 4 MHz CPU speed is adequate for the control loop. The OTP memory is appropriate only when firmware is finalized and the cost per unit matters more than field re-programmability. Choose the PIC16C62B-04I/SO for industrial temperature (-40C to +85C), the PIC16C62B-20/SO for 20 MHz performance on the same footprint, and the PIC16C62A-04/SO only when you are cost-constrained to 1.75 KB of code. For new designs, migrate to the PIC16F72-I/SO or PIC16F88-I/SO flash-based family to gain in-circuit re-programmability and long-term supply assurance.

設計ノート

Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 20) on the PIC16C62B-04/SO, and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same supply rail. The PIC16C62B is rated for 4.0 V to 5.5 V; operating below 4.0 V can trigger brown-out reset. A bulk capacitor of 10-47 uF is recommended if the same rail powers relays or other inductive loads. VSS must be tied to ground at both pins 8 and 19 for proper ADC reference accuracy.

OTP memory cannot be erased: the PIC16C62B-04/SO program memory is one-time programmable, so a programming error bricks the device. Use the JW windowed variant for prototype development, and finalize firmware before committing to the SOIC-28 production parts. The MCLR pin (pin 1) is also the programming voltage input; ensure the MCLR pull-up is sized so that the ICSP programmer can drive it low. The PORTA RA4 pin is open-drain and requires a pull-up resistor to drive a logic-high output.

Route the oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2, pins 9-10) as short as possible, guard them with a ground plane, and keep high-frequency digital signals away from these traces. With the 4 MHz grade, the oscillator is sensitive to capacitive loading; follow the Microchip datasheet section on oscillator design for the chosen mode (RC, LP, XT, or HS). The ADC inputs (RA0-RA3, RA5, and others shared with PORTB) should be guarded with analog ground if mixed-signal accuracy is required, and an external voltage reference on RA3 is recommended when the supply is noisy.
