PIC16C717-I/SO 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16C717-I/SO is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller featuring the PIC16 CPU architecture, 3.5KB (2K x 14) of One-Time Programmable (OTP) program memory and 256 bytes of RAM, executing instructions in 200 nanoseconds at a 20 MHz clock. Housed in a surface-mount 18-pin SOIC (300 mil / 7.50 mm width), the device delivers 6 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion plus two timers and a Capture/Compare/PWM module, making it a strong fit for mixed-signal embedded designs.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, working RAM, I/O and peripheral blocks on one die. The PIC16C717 belongs to the PIC16 mid-range family, which sits between PIC10/12 baseline parts and PIC18 enhanced devices in the broader Microchip 8-bit portfolio. 8-bit MCUs continue to dominate high-volume cost-sensitive and real-time control applications because they offer deterministic instruction timing, low power draw and mature toolchains. OTP memory means the program is permanently fused by the user - one write per cell, no field re-programmability - which lowers unit cost versus flash parts in closed-production builds.

Key specifications include 13 digital I/O pins, a 6-channel 10-bit ADC, two 8-bit timers (Timer0 with 8-bit prescaler, Timer2), a single Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, and an internal Brown-out Reset (BOR) circuit. The supply voltage range is 4.0 V to 5.5 V (industrial), instruction cycle time is 200 ns at 20 MHz, and the part supports in-circuit serial programming via two pins. Total I/O count is 13 with one input-only pin (RA5). On-chip peripherals are mapped to PORTA and PORTC.

Architecturally, the PIC16C717 uses a Harvard-style memory map with separate program (14-bit wide OTP) and data (8-bit SRAM) buses, a hardware stack of 8 levels, and direct/indirect addressing modes. Brown-out detection holds the part in reset when VDD dips below threshold, preventing code corruption. The 10-bit ADC uses successive approximation with analog input muxing across 6 channels - a generous count for the package size.

Typical applications include automotive sensor signal conditioning, industrial appliance control (washing machines, HVAC fans), white-goods motor drive (CCP PWM for TRIAC or FET drive), consumer remote controls, and battery chargers. The 6 ADC channels suit multi-sensor monitoring (temperature, current, voltage) and the 20 MHz throughput supports 5 MIPS performance.

When designing with the PIC16C717-I/SO, allocate ample board space for the SOIC-18 footprint and use decoupling capacitors of at least 100 nF ceramic plus 10 uF bulk near VDD. Because this is an OTP part, you must commit the program before final PCB assembly - reserve an ICSP header for prototype programming only. Validate timing margins for ADC acquisition at your chosen clock rate.

PIC16C717-I/SO の用途: 7 件s: Appliance Control (Washing Machine / HVAC Fan), Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning, Battery Charger Controller, Industrial Remote Control / IR Transmitter, White Goods Motor Drive (CCP PWM), Consumer Keypad / User Interface Controller, Smart Sensor Node (Analog Front-End Co-Processor).

🏭

Appliance Control (Washing Machine / HVAC Fan)

The PIC16C717-I/SO suits appliance controllers where mixed-signal sensing plus PWM motor drive are required in a single chip. Its 6-channel 10-bit ADC reads thermistor temperature sensors, water level probes and motor current across PORTA inputs, while the Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module generates TRIAC or MOSFET gate-drive pulses for triac-based motor speed control. Running at 20 MHz / 5 MIPS, the MCU can sample sensors at sub-millisecond rates and close a feedback loop on RPM. The 3.5 KB OTP memory holds the main state machine plus a fault-handling routine - typical mid-tier washer code fits comfortably. The 18-SOIC footprint is cost-effective for high-volume white-goods PCBs where assemblers prefer SOIC over DIP. Brown-out Reset prevents corruption of the OTP image when the AC mains ripple dips low during compressor inrush, a common brown-out trigger in this application class.

🚗

Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning

Automotive sensor nodes with multiple analog inputs benefit from the PIC16C717's 6-channel 10-bit ADC and 20 MHz throughput. In body controllers the part reads manifold pressure, coolant temperature, ambient light and battery voltage, then drives a LIN slave interface for dashboard networking. The CCP module generates PWM dimming for backlight control and the timer modules measure sensor pulse widths. Operating from 5 V (within automotive 12 V battery rail jump limits during a steady load and with an external regulator for jump-start events), the part must be paired with reverse-battery and load-dump protection. The -I industrial temperature grade to +85 C covers cabin electronics, though underhood nodes will require the -E extended grade. The OTP image locks code permanently, preventing IP exfiltration if the part is tampered with during warranty service. Brown-out Reset guards against crank-cold-start voltage sags that would otherwise corrupt program flow.

⚡

Battery Charger Controller

The PIC16C717-I/SO works well as the supervisor in lead-acid or NiMH charger modules where multiple voltages and currents must be sampled. Its 6-channel ADC handles battery voltage, charge current, battery temperature and AC-line sense with 10-bit precision, sufficient for CV/CC charge-profile control. The CCP module drives a PWM gate signal into an external buck or flyback converter at frequencies from 25 kHz to 100 kHz. The 3.5 KB of OTP memory stores the charge state machine, the temperature-compensated voltage setpoint table and the fault handler. The 18-SOIC surface-mount package supports automated assembly in mid-volume production. Brown-out Reset is critical: when AC mains is unplugged, the part holds in reset and does not continue regulating into a disconnected battery. The PIC16C717-I/SO is a strong fit when charger firmware requires >2 KB of code - smaller chargers can drop to the PIC16C711 family for cost savings.

📱

Industrial Remote Control / IR Transmitter

Consumer and industrial IR remote controls use the PIC16C717-I/SO to encode Manchester or RC-5 protocol on a 38 kHz carrier via the CCP module. The 20 MHz clock delivers precise carrier timing and the 6-channel ADC handles battery voltage monitoring plus key-scan input. With 3.5 KB of OTP memory, the part stores multi-device code sets (TV, VCR, set-top) and a wake-on-key state machine, leaving room for manufacturer-specific features. The 18-SOIC footprint sits in thin handhelds where a low-profile package is required. Sleep-mode quiescent current is low enough to support a year of standby life from two AAA cells. The PIC16C711 family is a cost-down alternative when code fits in 1K x 14, while the PIC16C715 family sits between the two when 2K of code is enough.

🏭

White Goods Motor Drive (CCP PWM)

In dishwasher circulation pumps, refrigerator fans and small compressor drives, the PIC16C717-I/SO generates a single-channel PWM output that drives a TRIAC or low-side FET. The Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module produces hardware-timed pulses without CPU overhead, leaving firmware cycles for the soft-start state machine and tacho feedback loop. The 10-bit ADC samples motor current and supply voltage to detect stall, overcurrent and brown-out events. With 3.5 KB OTP, the firmware holds the commutation table, fault tree and UART diagnostic command set. The 18-SOIC package drops into white-goods PCBs designed around the PIC16C716 family, allowing easy code upgrades. Operating temperature -40 C to +85 C covers the inside of household appliances. Brown-out Reset prevents inrush lockup when mains voltage dips at compressor start.

🧩

Consumer Keypad / User Interface Controller

The PIC16C717-I/SO serves as the user-interface controller in microwave ovens, alarm panels and HVAC thermostats, scanning keypads and driving 7-segment or LCD displays via its I/O ports. The 6-channel ADC reads thermistor inputs (room and setpoint), light sensors (auto-dim), and battery voltage. The CCP module produces an audible beep tone or PWM backlight dimming. The 3.5 KB OTP memory holds a state machine for menu navigation plus lookup tables for setpoint conversion. The 18-SOIC package saves board space over DIP in compact consumer designs. Brown-out Reset ensures menu state and setpoints are reset cleanly after a power interruption. Engineers can drop to PIC16C711 for simpler UI firmware and PIC16C715 for mid-tier firmware between 1K and 2K x 14.

🖥️

Smart Sensor Node (Analog Front-End Co-Processor)

As a sensor co-processor, the PIC16C717-I/SO handles analog muxing and conditioning in industrial sensor clusters where a host processor cannot dedicate pins to ADC. Its 6-channel 10-bit ADC multiplexes across thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges and 4-20 mA current loops, while the CCP module produces excitation pulses for bridge sensors. The 20 MHz clock rate runs the ADC sample-and-average filter in real time, dropping line-frequency noise from sensor data. The 3.5 KB OTP image holds the calibration constants and linearization tables for each sensor type. The 18-SOIC surface-mount package sits on compact sensor PCBs. Brown-out Reset prevents corrupted calibration data from leaking into the host bus during brown-out. The PIC16C715 is a lower-memory alternative when calibration tables fit in 2K x 14.

エンジニアリング参考データ: PIC16C717-I/SO — 比較、設計ガイダンス、コンプライアンス情報。

選定ガイド

Choose the PIC16C717-I/SO when your firmware image exceeds 2 KB and you need 6 channels of 10-bit ADC plus one CCP PWM module in an 18-SOIC footprint. The 256-byte RAM and 3.5 KB OTP support mid-tier appliance, charger and motor-drive firmware where variable-heavy code would otherwise overflow the PIC16C716's 128-byte RAM. Drop to PIC16C716-04I/SO for the same pinout with 1 KB of code at lower cost, or to PIC16C711-04I/SO for minimum-code designs with 4 ADC channels. Use PIC16C715-04I/SO when 2K x 14 of OTP suffices and you can spare two ADC channels. For modern flash-based migration, evaluate the PIC16F716-I/SO, which adds ISP but shares the same 18-SOIC footprint. All five PIC16C7xx alternatives share the 18-SOIC footprint, enabling PCB reuse when scaling code size or peripheral mix.

設計ノート

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 14) with a short ground return, plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum electrolytic on the same node. The PIC16C717-I/SO internal Brown-out Reset (BOR) holds the device in reset when VDD drops below the BOR threshold (about 4.0 V typical). Ensure that upstream regulation prevents false BOR triggers during high-load transients such as motor inrush or relay pull-in. For battery applications, estimate: at 20 MHz active current is roughly 10 mA, dropping to a few microamps in sleep mode.

Because the PIC16C717 uses One-Time Programmable memory, every programmed part is single-write and cannot be erased. Validate firmware on a flash-based PIC16F series (e.g. PIC16F716) before committing OTP volumes. Reserve ICSP connections on RB6/RB7 even on production PCBs - although OTP cannot be re-written, ICSP allows factory calibration and ID verification. Programming voltage is typically VPP = 13.4 V; some programmers use the high-voltage entry on MCLR.

Keep crystal traces (OSC1/OSC2 on pins 16/15) short and symmetric, with ground pours on either side and a guard trace to reduce EMI pickup. Keep ADC traces (RA0-RA5) away from PWM outputs (RC2/CCP1) by at least 2-3mm to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into analog measurements. Place the AVDD reference (pin 2 VREF+ if used, otherwise VDD) with its own bypass capacitor; a 100 nF ceramic plus 10 uF bulk is typical.

When the 10-bit ADC samples high-impedance analog sources, add an external buffer op-amp (e.g. Microchip MCP6001) or limit source impedance below 10 kohm to avoid acquisition-time errors. The ADC clock must be derived from the system clock via ADCS bits; at 20 MHz the recommended ADC clock is around 1.25 MHz to 2.5 MHz for full 10-bit accuracy. Add a small RC low-pass filter (e.g. 1 kohm + 100 nF) on analog inputs in electrically noisy environments.
