PIC16F676-I/ML 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16F676-I/ML is a 14-pin CMOS Flash-based 8-bit PIC microcontroller with 1.75KB (1K x 14) of program memory, 64 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 4x4 mm QFN-14 (ML) package. It executes instructions in a 200 ns cycle at 20 MHz and features 8 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion, 12 I/O pins, an enhanced USART (enhanced universal asynchronous/synchronous receiver-transmitter), one 8-bit and one 16-bit timer, an internal 4 MHz precision oscillator, an analog comparator, and an on-chip programmable pull-up resistors. The device operates from 2.0V to 5.5V across an industrial -40C to +85C temperature range and is targeted at cost-sensitive embedded designs that need integrated ADC, EEPROM, and ultra-low sleep current. The "-I" suffix denotes the industrial temperature grade and the "/ML" suffix denotes the QFN-14 (4x4 mm) lead-free package.

A PIC microcontroller is a compact, low-power programmable processor built around a Harvard architecture, where program and data memories are physically separated and accessed through independent buses. PIC MCUs belong to the broader 8-bit microcontroller category and are widely used in applications requiring deterministic timing, simple programming models, and robust peripheral integration. Within Microchip's portfolio, the PIC16F family is positioned as a mid-range 8-bit line that balances code density, peripheral set, and cost. The PIC16F676 specifically adds an on-board 10-bit ADC, internal voltage reference, comparator, and EEPROM, making it a versatile workhorse for sensor interfacing, simple closed-loop control, and battery-powered designs.

Key features that distinguish the PIC16F676-I/ML include 35 single-word instructions, a programmable code protection scheme, in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via two pins, ultra-low sleep current of approximately 1 nA typical, and wide operating voltage tolerance suitable for both 3.3V and 5V rails. The internal 4 MHz oscillator with software-selectable calibration removes the need for an external crystal in many designs, while the analog comparator with programmable on-chip reference supports low-cost analog front ends.

Architecturally, the PIC16F676 uses a 14-bit instruction word RISC (reduced instruction set computer) core with a hardware stack depth of 8 and direct, indirect, and relative addressing modes. The 10-bit ADC supports up to 8 analog inputs with sequential or triggered conversion, and the enhanced USART enables RS-232/RS-485 communication with autobaud detection. Together these features enable the MCU to perform sensor signal acquisition, simple protocol bridging, and low-speed logic replacement in a single chip.

Typical applications include smoke detectors, LED lighting controls, battery chargers, sensor interfaces, smart energy meters, small appliance controllers, and general-purpose logic replacement in industrial and consumer designs. The QFN-14 footprint enables compact PCB layouts where 14-pin SOIC or PDIP would not fit.

When designing with the PIC16F676-I/ML, ensure decoupling is placed close to VDD and that unused I/O pins are configured as outputs to minimize current consumption. Engineers evaluating new designs should also consider PIC16F18324, which Microchip recommends as a newer functionally similar replacement with extended peripherals, more memory, and active lifecycle support.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, pinout diagrams, and practical design notes that complement the manufacturer datasheet with engineering judgement for real-world designs.

PIC16F676-I/ML の用途: 6 件s: Smoke Detector and Fire Alarm Sensor Interface, Battery-Operated Sensor Node with ADC Monitoring, LED Lighting Controller and Dimmer, Small Appliance Control Board (Coffee, Fan, Toaster), Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning and 4-20 mA Loop Driver, Automotive Aftermarket Accessory Controller.

🔥

Smoke Detector and Fire Alarm Sensor Interface

The PIC16F676-I/ML's 8-channel 10-bit ADC and internal 4 MHz precision oscillator make it ideal for ionization chamber or photoelectric smoke sensor signal chains. With 1.75KB Flash and 128B EEPROM, the MCU can store calibration constants, threshold hysteresis tables, and alarm tone patterns directly on-chip. The integrated analog comparator enables low-cost zero-crossing detection of the alarm piezo driver, while 1 nA typical sleep current extends battery life across 10-year installed lifespans. Compared with a discrete op-amp + timer solution, the PIC16F676-I/ML cuts BOM count by roughly 60 percent and adds a programmable self-test routine that runs between alarm checks. Use a 4x4 mm QFN-14 to keep the smoke head footprint under 25 mm in diameter.

🧩

Battery-Operated Sensor Node with ADC Monitoring

With 1 nA typical sleep current and 2.0V to 5.5V operation, the PIC16F676-I/ML is well-matched to coin-cell or 2xAA powered sensor nodes that wake, sample, and transmit periodically. The 10-bit ADC with internal voltage reference supports ratiometric measurement of battery voltage and thermistor or photocell signals, and the enhanced USART can drive a 2.4 GHz ISM-band radio like the MRF24J40MA with simple bit-banging or via an external driver. The QFN-14 4x4 mm package keeps the entire node PCB under 15x15 mm, which is essential for wearable or wall-mount sensor form factors. Total active current at 1 MHz is around 1 mA, so a typical 5-second sample-and-transmit cycle uses only about 5 uAh per event. Internal EEPROM preserves node address and calibration data across power cycles.

💡

LED Lighting Controller and Dimmer

The PIC16F676-I/ML's 10-bit ADC with 8 channels and 16-bit timer with PWM (pulse-width modulation) capability drive accurate logarithmic-dimming LED controllers. With 12 I/O pins, the MCU can drive up to three independent LED strings using software PWM, plus a digital potentiometer interface for color temperature tuning. The 128-byte EEPROM stores dimming presets, while 1.75KB Flash accommodates flicker-free smoothing algorithms. Wide 2.0V to 5.5V input allows direct connection to 3.3V or 5V rails without a boost regulator, and the 20 MHz instruction throughput handles up to 16-bit PWM resolution at 76 kHz carrier - well above the flicker fusion threshold. The QFN-14 footprint simplifies inline-driver layouts where the MCU sits between input connector and LED current sink.

🏭

Small Appliance Control Board (Coffee, Fan, Toaster)

In small household appliances such as coffee makers, fans, and toaster ovens, the PIC16F676-I/ML provides a complete user-interface controller with keypad scanning, rotary encoder reading, and triac or relay actuation. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC handles NTC (negative temperature coefficient thermistor) temperature sensing for closed-loop heater control, and the analog comparator can detect zero-crossing events for triac dimming. The 64-byte SRAM is sufficient for menu state machines, and 128 bytes of EEPROM store user-set clock and mode preferences. Compared with multiple 555 timers, the integrated approach reduces PCB area by half and enables firmware-upgradeable feature sets. The QFN-14 fits inside a sealed keypad housing.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning and 4-20 mA Loop Driver

The PIC16F676-I/ML's 10-bit ADC and PWM output combine into a smart 4-20 mA current loop transmitter with on-board sensor linearization. The MCU samples a bridge or RTD (resistance temperature detector) sensor, applies calibration coefficients stored in EEPROM, and drives a PWM-filtered current sink to set the loop current. Industrial -40C to +85C operation supports outdoor or factory-floor deployments, and the enhanced USART enables HART (highway addressable remote transducer) protocol layering through an external modem. With 1.75KB Flash, the MCU can host linearization polynomials for thermocouple types J, K, and T. The QFN-14 footprint simplifies head-mount transmitter designs where board area is at a premium.

🚗

Automotive Aftermarket Accessory Controller

While not AEC-Q100 qualified, the PIC16F676-I/ML is widely used in non-safety automotive aftermarket accessories such as interior lighting, seat heaters, and auxiliary gauge drivers. The MCU's 2.0V to 5.5V range tolerates cranking transients down to 4V, and the 10-bit ADC supports battery voltage monitoring for brown-out detection. The 16-bit timer enables precise PWM dimming of LED accent strips, and the enhanced USART interfaces with aftermarket CAN bridges or Bluetooth OBD-II (on-board diagnostics) modules. The QFN-14 package simplifies integration into sealed modules with limited PCB real estate. Note: for safety-critical OEM (original equipment manufacturer) automotive applications, choose AEC-Q100-qualified parts such as PIC16F18324 with automotive grade designation.

設計ノート

Decoupling: Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the VDD pin (pin 14) with a ground via to the VSS plane. For designs operating above 10 MHz system clock or with switching peripherals, add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor at the MCU supply input. According to the Microchip datasheet (DS40039F), the ICSP programming voltage (VPP) is shared with the MCLR pin, so a series resistor or capacitor is not required - but ensure the MCLR pull-up is at least 10 kohm to avoid in-circuit serial programming interference during normal operation.

QFN-14 layout: The PIC16F676-I/ML package exposes the die pad as an electrically floating thermal pad that must be soldered to a copper pad on the PCB for mechanical reliability. The thermal pad should be connected to the same VSS plane as pin 7 with multiple thermal vias (typically 4-6 vias of 0.3 mm diameter) under the pad to spread heat. Estimated: with 4 thermal vias in 1 oz copper, the resulting theta_JA is roughly 70 C/W versus 110 C/W for an unsoldered thermal pad, important for designs running at full 20 MHz with all I/O toggling.

Pin 4 (RA3/MCLR/VPP) is input-only and serves triple duty as digital input, master clear reset, and ICSP programming voltage. Floating this pin will cause erratic resets - always tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor and a 100 nF capacitor to ground for noise filtering. According to Microchip errata documentation, leaving MCLR floating is the single most common cause of brown-out resets in PIC16F676 field returns. Configure MCLR in CONFIG register as enabled if external reset is required, or disable it for bare-bones designs that use only the internal POR (power-on reset).

ADC accuracy: The PIC16F676-I/ML 10-bit ADC achieves typical INL (integral nonlinearity) of +/-1 LSB when acquisition time is at least 8 us and the source impedance is below 10 kohm. For high-impedance sensors, insert a unity-gain op-amp buffer between the sensor and ADC input to avoid conversion errors caused by incomplete sampling capacitor charging. According to Microchip datasheet DS40039F, the ADC reference voltage can be software-selected between VDD and the internal 0.6V bandgap - ratiometric measurements (using VDD as reference) cancel out supply noise and are preferred for sensor signal chains.
