PIC16F84-10/P 概要

The Microchip Technology PIC16F84-10/P is a low-cost, high-performance, CMOS, fully-static 8-bit RISC microcontroller in an 18-pin PDIP package with 1.75KB (1K x 14 words) of flash program memory, 68 bytes of RAM, and 13 digital I/O pins, operating up to 10 MHz (200 ns instruction cycle). It targets the original PIC16CXX mid-range family lineage and remains widely used in education, hobby, and legacy industrial control.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a self-contained microcomputer on a single chip integrating a CPU, non-volatile program memory (flash), working RAM, and programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16F84 belongs to the mid-range PIC16 family (hypernym: microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> embedded controller -> semiconductor). It implements Microchip's enhanced RISC architecture with only 35 single-word instructions, providing deterministic instruction timing suitable for direct register-level control of LEDs, switches, relays, and serial interfaces. The "F" prefix denotes flash program memory (re-programmable in-circuit) and the "84" suffix identifies the 1K-instruction variant within the PIC16F8X sub-family alongside PIC16F83, PIC16CR83, and PIC16CR84.

Key features include 1.75 KB (1K x 14) flash program memory, 68 bytes data RAM, 64 bytes EEPROM, 13 bidirectional I/O pins with individual direction control, 8-bit timer (TMR0) with 8-bit prescaler, watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator, in-circuit serial programming (ICSP), and a 10 MHz external oscillator. Power-fail detection and brown-out reset are not present on this original silicon - the later PIC16F84A supersedes it with these improvements.

Architecturally the PIC16F84-10/P uses a Harvard design with separate program and data buses, a 14-bit instruction word, and direct/indirect addressing modes. It operates from 4.0V to 5.5V with typical DC current under 2 mA at 5V/4 MHz and shutdown current under 1 uA. The on-chip RC oscillator and power-on reset simplify designs that do not require crystal accuracy.

Typical applications include PIC training boards and development kits, hobby robotics, low-end sensor nodes, IR remote controls, simple PID loops, and legacy industrial controllers migrating away from PIC16C84 or PIC16F84A EOL systems. The 18-pin PDIP package is breadboard-friendly for classroom and prototype use.

When designing with this part, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD and use a 10-100 uF bulk capacitor on the supply rail. For clock stability above 4 MHz, prefer a crystal across OSC1/OSC2 rather than the internal RC. Confirm pin-compatible migration to PIC16F84A-10/P for new designs.

PIC16F84-10/P の用途: 6 件s: PIC Microcontroller Education and Hobby Projects, IR Remote Control Transmitters and Receivers, Simple Sensor and Data Acquisition Nodes, Stepper Motor and Small DC Motor Control, Legacy Industrial Control Replacement, Simple Display and LED Matrix Drivers.

🔧

PIC Microcontroller Education and Hobby Projects

The PIC16F84-10/P is the canonical training platform for 8-bit MCU education, pairing a 35-instruction RISC core with breadboard-friendly 18-pin PDIP and 4.0-5.5 V supply. Its 1.75 KB flash fits the classic 'blinking LED' through 'I2C master' pedagogical progression, while 13 I/O pins are enough for keypad + LCD + sensor interfaces. The 200 ns instruction cycle at 10 MHz enables visible bit-banging demonstrations. Why it fits: low cost, MPLAB X + PICkit 3 ICSP support via RB6/RB7, and a huge repository of assembly examples. Engineering trade-off: original F84 lacks brown-out reset, so a teaching lab power supply should be well-regulated or use PIC16F84A-10/P for new kits.

📱

IR Remote Control Transmitters and Receivers

The PIC16F84-10/P's 10 MHz instruction cycle and TMR0 with 8-bit prescaler generate accurate 38 kHz / 40 kHz / 56 kHz carrier modulations for IR remote control, while 64 bytes EEPROM store learned-key tables across power cycles. Its 4.0-5.5 V operation matches CR2032 + booster or two-AA supply rails typical of remote handsets. Why it fits: 35 instructions cover RC5/RC6/Sony protocols easily; 13 I/O can drive 4x4 key matrices with PWM-free firmware. Trade-off: at 3 V supply, original F84 stops - the PIC16F84A-10/P (2.0 V min) or PIC16F88-I/P is preferred for direct coin-cell designs.

🏭

Simple Sensor and Data Acquisition Nodes

The PIC16F84-10/P reads analog sensors via on-chip comparator interfaces (using digital I/O plus external RC timing) and serializes results through bit-banged UART on RB pins, with 64 bytes EEPROM buffering samples during offline periods. Its 1 uA typical sleep current extends battery life in polled sensor applications to multi-year durations. Why it fits: 10 MHz headroom is sufficient for bit-banged I2C at 100 kHz to MEMS sensors, and the 18-pin PDIP is breadboard-friendly. Trade-off: only 68 bytes RAM, so application code cannot afford large buffers - favor streaming over buffering.

🏭

Stepper Motor and Small DC Motor Control

The PIC16F84-10/P drives bipolar stepper motors through bit-banged phase sequences on RB0-RB3 with 200 ns timing accuracy, sufficient for full-step and half-step commutation at moderate RPM. Its 13 I/O can independently switch four half-bridge driver channels for brushed DC or single-coil steppers at 5 V. Why it fits: deterministic 200 ns instruction cycle enables software PID loops up to several kHz update rates, and 64 bytes EEPROM store calibration constants. Trade-off: no hardware PWM, so microstepping requires tight assembly or migration to PIC16F628A-04/P for hardware PWM.

🏭

Legacy Industrial Control Replacement

The PIC16F84-10/P supports maintenance of legacy industrial controllers, instrumentation, and embedded systems still in service from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Its mature toolchain (MPLAB + PICkit + assembly or Hi-Tech C) is well-documented in service manuals. Why it fits: identical electrical characteristics across production years means firmware binaries written for the original F84 still run on contemporary silicon. New designs should target PIC16F84A-10/P with same pinout and added brown-out reset for improved supply robustness.

💡

Simple Display and LED Matrix Drivers

The PIC16F84-10/P multiplexes 8x8 LED matrix displays, 7-segment displays, and character LCDs through PORTB for data and PORTA for row/column strobing at refresh rates above 100 Hz with no perceptible flicker. Its 10 MHz instruction cycle supports software-generated Charlieplexing of 12 LEDs across 4 pins (RB0-RB3). Why it fits: 13 I/O can directly drive a 4-digit 7-segment display plus 8 LEDs with no external logic; 64 bytes EEPROM store scrolling messages. Trade-off: TMR0 has only 8 bits, so 100 Hz refresh with 8 rows implies fine-tuning prescaler.

What is the program memory size of PIC16F84-10/P?
The PIC16F84-10/P integrates 1.75 KB of flash program memory organized as 1K x 14-bit words, with 68 bytes of data RAM and 64 bytes of data EEPROM. According to the Microchip PIC16F8X datasheet (DS30430C), this 14-bit instruction word is characteristic of the PIC mid-range architecture and supports single-cycle execution on most instructions, delivering effective MIPS close to one instruction per clock period.
What is the maximum clock frequency of PIC16F84-10/P?
The PIC16F84-10/P operates at a maximum external oscillator frequency of 10 MHz, producing a 200 ns instruction cycle (4 oscillator clocks per instruction). The "-10" speed suffix in the part number explicitly denotes this 10 MHz rating, distinguishing it from the PIC16F84-04 (4 MHz) and PIC16F84-20 (20 MHz) variants.
Is PIC16F84-10/P still in production in 2026?
No - Microchip has marked the original PIC16F84 family Not Recommended for New Designs (NRND), with the PIC16F84A as the recommended successor. According to Microchip product page (PIC16F84), "a newer version of this device is available - please consider PIC16F84A." As of 2026-09-21 the part remains in stock at distributors but is being phased out in favor of PIC16F84A-10/P, which adds brown-out reset, 1.5 ms POR, and improved ESD protection with the same 18-pin PDIP pinout.
Where to buy PIC16F84-10/P online?
The PIC16F84-10/P is available from major distributors including DigiKey (datasheet page at digikey.com/en/products/detail/microchip-technology/PIC16F84-10-P/243464), Mouser (mouser.com/en/ProductDetail/Microchip-Technology/PIC16F84-10-P), LCSC Electronics ($8.98 unit price as of 2026-09-21), and Microchip Direct. LCSC lists $8.98 for single-piece, reflecting distributor markup. Volume pricing favors direct orders from MicrochipDirect above 1k units.
What is the lead time for PIC16F84-10/P orders?
As of 2026-09-21 the PIC16F84-10/P ships immediately from distributor stock (DigiKey "ships today", Mouser in-stock at qty 1), with Microchip factory lead time of 4-8 weeks for production quantities. Because the part is NRND and the recommended successor is PIC16F84A-10/P, new designs should plan around the A-revision to avoid a second migration later.
PIC16F84-10/P vs PIC16F84A-10/P - which is better for new designs?
The PIC16F84A-10/P is the better choice for new designs: it retains the same 18-pin PDIP pinout, same 10 MHz max clock, same 1.75 KB flash, same 68-byte RAM, and same 64-byte EEPROM, but adds brown-out reset (BOR), wider 2.0-5.5 V operating voltage, improved ESD protection, and 1.5 ms power-on reset. According to Microchip's PIC16F84 product page, the A-revision is the recommended successor. Choose original PIC16F84-10/P only for legacy maintenance where software depends on known silicon quirks.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16F84-10/P?
The best drop-in replacement is PIC16F84A-10/P, which shares the 18-pin PDIP footprint, pinout, and instruction set, adding brown-out reset, wider 2.0-5.5 V VDD, and improved ESD. For a more modern drop-in, the PIC16F628A-04/P (18-pin PDIP) is pin-compatible at the basic I/O level but requires minor code migration due to additional peripherals (PWM, comparators, internal oscillator). Verify registers and oscillator configuration bits before migrating.
Can PIC16F628A replace PIC16F84-10/P directly?
The PIC16F628A-04/P shares the same 18-pin PDIP package footprint as PIC16F84-10/P but is NOT a register-level drop-in: it adds 2 comparators, 1 PWM, internal 4 MHz oscillator, and USART, requiring code migration to enable these features and re-map configuration bits. The 16F628A has different CONFIG register locations and a different peripheral library. For new code this is excellent; for legacy PIC16F84 binaries, prefer PIC16F84A-10/P instead.
What is the difference between PIC16F84-10/P and PIC16F84-04/P?
Both PIC16F84-10/P and PIC16F84-04/P share the same 18-pin PDIP pinout, flash memory, RAM, and instruction set; the only difference is the speed rating. The "-10" suffix indicates a 10 MHz maximum external oscillator (200 ns instruction cycle), while "-04" indicates a 4 MHz maximum (1 us instruction cycle). Both are electrically identical at low frequencies - the 04 is simply speed-binned lower and is a clean swap for slower legacy designs.
What is the operating voltage of PIC16F84-10/P?
The PIC16F84-10/P operates from 4.0 V to 5.5 V on VDD (5V nominal design). It does not operate below 4.0 V - this is one of the key differences from PIC16F84A-10/P, which operates from 2.0 V to 5.5 V. Brown-out reset is not present on the original F84, so external voltage supervision is recommended if the supply can dip below 4.0 V during operation.
Where to download PIC16F84-10/P datasheet PDF?

選定ガイド

Choose PIC16F84-10/P for maintaining legacy 1990s/2000s designs where firmware binaries depend on original F84 silicon behavior, or for educational kits that have already deployed thousands of PIC16F84 units and require identical replacement. For all new designs, prefer PIC16F84A-10/P - it shares the same pinout and instruction set but adds brown-out reset, 2.0-5.5 V VDD, and improved ESD protection. For designs needing more peripherals (PWM, comparators, USART), choose PIC16F628A-04/P, accepting minor code migration. For designs with surface-mount constraints and 10-bit ADC, evaluate PIC16F88-I/P. The PIC16F84-10/P's NRND status makes it a maintenance-only choice in 2026; do not specify it for new product designs.

設計ノート

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 14) with the ground lead short to the VSS pin (pin 5). Add a 10-100 uF bulk tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitor on the supply rail if the source impedance exceeds 1 ohm. The PIC16F84-10/P does not include brown-out reset, so add an external voltage supervisor (e.g., MCP100-450) on the MCLR pin if VDD can dip below 4.0 V during operation. Estimated: the MCU draws under 2 mA active at 4 MHz/5V and under 1 uA in sleep, so a 100 uF bulk supports several hundred milliseconds of hold-up at 5V.

Never leave MCLR floating: tie pin 4 to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor with a 100 nF decoupling cap to ground for manual reset push-button support. Floating MCLR causes erratic resets and unreliable ICSP programming. When using ICSP via RB6/PGC and RB7/PGD, isolate these pins from external pull-ups stronger than 10 kohm during programming to avoid programmer drive contention.

Keep oscillator traces short (under 20 mm) when using a crystal across OSC1 (pin 16) and OSC2 (pin 15). Place 15-33 pF ceramic load capacitors on each oscillator pin to ground, with the capacitor ground lead returning directly to VSS pin 5. For HS mode at 10 MHz, this layout prevents start-up failures and frequency drift. When using the internal RC oscillator mode (selected in CONFIG word), OSC2 becomes a general-purpose I/O (RA6) on the F84 - but note the original PIC16F84 has no internal oscillator; only PIC16F84A and later add this feature.
