PIC18F25K50-I/ML 概要

The Microchip PIC18F25K50-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller with integrated USB 2.0 transceiver, 32 KB of Flash program memory, and XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package. It executes instructions at 200 ns, delivering up to 16 MIPS at 48 MHz, and includes 2 KB SRAM plus 256 B EEPROM.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and peripherals. The PIC18 family uses a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture with 75 instructions, chosen over CISC for compact code density and deterministic timing. Within the PIC18F family, the 25K50 sits in the performance tier with USB on-chip, while larger variants in the 46K/56K/66K ranges add more memory; smaller 14K/24K parts drop the USB PHY. PIC18 belongs to Microchip's 8-bit line — distinct from 16-bit dsPIC and 32-bit SAM/CEC families, and runs at 2.5 V, 3.3 V, or 5 V.

Key features include 24 channels of 10-bit ADC with up to 28 digital I/O pins, two analog comparators, two 8/16-bit timers plus two 16-bit timers, two CCP modules, an EUSART, dual I2C/SPI, and a full-speed USB 2.0 device with on-chip transceiver supporting up to 32 endpoints (16 bidirectional). The integrated 48 MHz internal oscillator eliminates external crystals for USB operation. XLP technology delivers typical nanoWatt sleep currents below 100 nA.

Architecturally, the PIC18F25K50 uses a 16-bit instruction word with 8-bit data path, hardware multiplier, and a 31-level hardware stack. XLP adds ultra-low-power modules including RTCC, ultra-low-power watchdog, and ultra-low-power wake sources, making the part suitable for battery-powered USB HID, sensor hub, and IoT endpoint designs.

Typical applications include USB HID peripherals (keyboards, mice, custom input devices), USB-to-UART bridges, sensor hubs with USB enumeration, low-power data loggers, and industrial controls requiring customer USB connectivity. USB bus-powered devices particularly benefit from the integrated PHY and the 5 V-tolerant I/O.

When designing with this part, plan the USB D+/D- routing as a 90-ohm differential pair on PCB and ensure the internal regulator (3.3 V or 5 V mode) decoupling follows Microchip guidance. XLP sleep modes require careful peripheral disable sequencing to achieve the datasheet's low quiescent current.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives from Microchip's own PIC18F catalog, and practical design notes that go beyond the manufacturer datasheet's typical application circuits.

🧩

USB HID Peripherals (Keyboards, Mice, Custom Input)

The PIC18F25K50-I/ML's integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with on-chip pull-up resistors eliminates the external PHY chip and 22 Ohm series resistors typical in discrete designs, reducing BOM cost and PCB area. Its 32 KB Flash supports full USB HID class stacks plus user-defined HID reports, while the 2 KB SRAM accommodates USB endpoint buffers and runtime descriptors. The internal 48 MHz oscillator enables crystal-less USB operation, removing the most failure-prone mechanical component. XLP sleep modes below 100 nA allow battery-powered wireless mice and keyboards to survive years on a single AA cell, while 25 mA active per I/O lets the part directly drive LEDs and backlight drivers without buffering. Designers benefit from Microchip's free USB HID bootloader and the MPLAB Code Configurator USB library for fast development.

🌐

USB-to-UART / USB-to-SPI Bridge

The PIC18F25K50-I/ML integrates a USB device controller alongside a hardware EUSART and two SPI peripherals, enabling a single-chip USB-to-UART or USB-to-SPI bridge. The integrated USB transceiver removes the need for an FTDI or CP2102 equivalent, while the EUSART provides hardware flow-control (RTS/CTS) that discrete bridges lack. With 48 MHz and 16 MIPS throughput, sustained CDC-ACM data rates above 1 Mbps are achievable. The QFN-28 (6x6 mm) package fits inside a typical USB Type-A dongle enclosure with no external oscillator, and the -40C to +85C industrial operating range covers most indoor electronics. Crystal-less operation reduces assembly time and BOM count to a minimal 4-component bridge.

📱

Battery-Powered Sensor Hub with USB Charging

The PIC18F25K50-I/ML's XLP (eXtreme Low Power) nanoWatt technology delivers typical sleep currents below 100 nA, enabling sensor hub designs that charge over USB while operating for months on a 250 mAh Li-Po. The 10-bit ADC with 14 channels reads multiple analog sensors simultaneously; the integrated analog comparators wake the MCU on threshold events, offloading polling from the CPU. USB enumeration is handled entirely on-chip, so the host can detect the device, charge the battery, and stream telemetry without an external fuel gauge. Dual I2C and SPI ports allow connection of external temperature, pressure, or motion sensors. The 28-pin QFN keeps the entire BOM under 200 mm2, suitable for wearable form factors.

🏭

USB-Connected Industrial Control Modules

Industrial control modules benefit from the PIC18F25K50-I/ML's -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade, integrated USB 2.0 for diagnostics, and 5 V I/O tolerance that lets it interface directly with 5V PLC-style signals. The 32 KB Flash accommodates vendor-specific USB control transfers implementing custom industrial protocols. Two 8/16-bit timers and two CCP modules drive PWM outputs for motor control and dimming, while the integrated comparators provide hardware safety shutoffs. The QFN-28 package with exposed pad provides adequate thermal dissipation for industrial enclosures without a heatsink. Field firmware upgrades via USB DFU bootloader streamline maintenance across thousands of installed modules.

🖥️

USB Data Logging Device

With 32 KB Flash for buffering, 256 B EEPROM for configuration parameters, and 2 KB SRAM for runtime logs, the PIC18F25K50-I/ML supports compact standalone data loggers that download via USB. The internal 48 MHz oscillator provides timestamps without external RTC, while the integrated 10-bit ADC samples analog channels up to 100 ksps for fast transient capture. Battery-backed operation via XLP modes allows weeks of unattended logging. The QFN-28 package keeps the entire logger PCB under 25 mm square, suitable for embedded logging in HVAC ducts, refrigeration units, or vehicle systems. USB CDC-ACM presents a virtual COM port for trivial download to any host.

🎥

USB Barcode Scanner / POS Accessory

POS accessories such as barcode scanners, magnetic-stripe readers, and weight scales use the PIC18F25K50-I/ML to communicate with a PC over USB HID or vendor-specific classes. The integrated USB transceiver drops a chip vs discrete designs, while the 24 I/O pins accept keypad matrix input, LED feedback, and buzzer control. The 32 KB Flash houses the HID descriptor table plus scan-decode firmware for common 1D symbologies. Crystal-less operation at 48 MHz ensures reliable USB enumeration even when the scanner is plugged and unplugged rapidly. QFN-28 small footprint fits a handheld enclosure with a generous USB Type-C connector.

設計ノート

Route the USB D+ and D- lines as a 90 ohm differential pair on the top PCB layer immediately beneath the device, with no stubs and matched length within 150 mil. Keep series ferrite beads or ESD protection diodes close to the connector. The PIC18F25K50-I/ML's internal pull-up on D+ removes the external 1.5 kOhm resistor only when the device is configured for internal pull-up mode; otherwise an external pull-up to D+ via a controlled delay is required to comply with USB 2.0 section 7.1.5.2. Maintain a continuous ground plane beneath the QFN-28 exposed pad and stitch it to bottom-layer ground with at least 4 vias for thermal dissipation. Reference Microchip AN1144 'USB 2.0 High-Speed PCB Layout Guidelines' even though this part uses Full-Speed.

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the QFN-28 power pin (pin 14). Add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic at the regulator output to absorb USB inrush current. The PIC18F25K50 requires VDD rise time below 50 ms for proper POR; a soft-start with controlled slew rate prevents spurious resets during USB enumeration. For bus-powered designs, ensure the VDD source can supply 25 mA (USB inrush budget) plus the MCU's 10 mA active; a 5 V LDO like MCP1826S-3302E/DB is recommended upstream. Verify inrush with worst-case USB enumeration scenario — some hosts apply 100 uF load steps.

The QFN-28 (ML) package relies on the exposed pad (pin 29) for primary heat dissipation to the PCB. Provide at least 100 mm2 of top-layer copper connected to the pad and stitch to the bottom layer with 4-8 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) for power and thermal performance. At -40C to +85C industrial temperature and 48 MHz / 3.3 V the part consumes approximately 12 mW, well within the 200 mW budget for the QFN-28 thermal resistance of 35 C/W. Long-term reliability in enclosed enclosures (inside sealed HID or industrial boxes) is improved with the QFN pad bonded to the chassis rather than to copper pour only.

Do not use the PIC18F25K50-I/ML in any application that requires USB High-Speed (480 Mbps) — the device only supports Full-Speed (12 Mbps). The USB peripheral requires the system clock to be sourced from the 48 MHz internal oscillator or a 48 MHz crystal; using the PLL with a lower-frequency crystal adds 1.2 ms latency per enumeration. Bootloader programming via USB DFU needs User ID configuration of the bootloader vector and consumed Flash region (typically the top 256 B), which conflicts with debugging; allocate carefully. The I2C peripheral requires 4.7 kOhm external pull-ups — internal pull-ups are too weak for multi-slave buses. Watch for ID-locking quirks between PIC18F24K50 and PIC18F25K50 variants when migrating from 16 KB to 32 KB Flash firmware.
