ATSAMD20E17A-ANT 개요

The Microchip Technology ATSAMD20E17A-ANT is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller running at up to 48 MHz with 128 KB of Flash and 16 KB of SRAM in a 32-pin TQFP (7x7) package. It operates from 1.62 V to 3.63 V and is rated for industrial temperature range from -40 C to +105 C, making it suitable for harsh-environment applications.

What is a Cortex-M0+ microcontroller? The ARM Cortex-M0+ is the most energy-efficient processor in the ARM Cortex-M family, designed for embedded applications requiring low power, deterministic interrupt response, and small code footprint. MCUs in this category are widely used as the main processor in IoT nodes, sensor hubs, consumer appliances, and industrial controllers where 8-bit MCUs can no longer keep up with feature demands but full Cortex-M4 parts are over-budget.

The ATSAMD20E17A integrates multiple peripherals that reduce bill-of-materials cost: a 6-channel SERCOM (configurable as UART/SPI/I2C), a 12-bit/350 ksps ADC with up to 10 analog channels, two 16-bit timer/counters, a 32.768 kHz RTC, and a full-speed USB device. The Microchip SleepWalking peripheral allows the ADC, SERCOM, and other blocks to wake the core only when a qualified event occurs, enabling system-level current consumption below 100 uA/MHz in active mode and microamp-level standby currents.

Internal architecture uses a 2-channel bus matrix connecting Flash, SRAM, and peripherals to the Cortex-M0+ core via AHB and APB bridges. The Event System (12 channels) lets peripherals trigger each other without CPU intervention, further reducing average active current and enabling deterministic response times. Hardware divide and single-cycle I/O access are key architectural features inherited from the Cortex-M0+ specification.

Typical applications include home automation wireless sensor nodes, low-power IoT edge devices, consumer remote controls, smart metering, industrial sensor conditioning, and USB HID peripherals such as keyboards and custom interface devices. The wide operating voltage range suits coin-cell powered designs, while the USB device makes tethered PC peripherals practical without an external PHY.

When designing with this part, use the Atmel Studio 7 or MPLAB X IDE with the ASF (Atmel Software Framework) or Harmony 3, and program/debug via SWD using a Microchip debugger. Decouple VDD with at least one 100 nF ceramic capacitor per power pin pair and keep the trace between VDD and the capacitor below 5 mm.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives from the SAM D20 family and competitive Cortex-M0+ parts, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet summary.

ATSAMD20E17A-ANT 적합 용도: 7 애플리케이션s: Wireless IoT Sensor Nodes, Home Automation Hubs, USB HID Peripherals, Smart Metering Endpoints, Industrial Sensor Conditioning, Consumer Remote Controls, Educational & Maker Platforms.

🧩

Wireless IoT Sensor Nodes

The ATSAMD20E17A-ANT is a strong fit for wireless IoT sensor nodes because its Cortex-M0+ core consumes well under 100 uA/MHz at 48 MHz and its SleepWalking peripherals let the ADC and SERCOM wake the core only on qualified events, dropping average current to microamp levels. The 128 KB Flash fits an MQTT-over-BLE bridge or LoRaWAN stack, while 16 KB SRAM holds small sensor buffers without external memory. The 1.62 V minimum supply lets the same MCU run from a partially depleted CR2032 coin cell alongside a sub-GHz or BLE module. Integrated USB on this variant is handy for firmware bring-up or tethered diagnostic beacons that reconfigure themselves when plugged in.

🏭

Home Automation Hubs

For home automation hubs and bridge devices, the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT provides six SERCOM channels that can be independently configured as UART, SPI, or I2C - enough to talk to a Wi-Fi module, a Zigbee coprocessor, and several sensor peripherals without an external bus switch. The 12-bit 350 ksps ADC lets the same MCU handle analog inputs such as battery voltage and ambient light. Industrial -40 C to +105 C temperature grade supports enclosures placed in attics or utility rooms, while the small 7x7 mm TQFP footprint keeps the BOM compact inside wall-switch form factors. Decoupling with two 100 nF ceramics per VDD pin pair ensures stable operation during Wi-Fi bursts.

🖥️

USB HID Peripherals

USB HID peripherals such as custom keypads, presenter remotes, and industrial pendants benefit from the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT's integrated full-speed USB 2.0 device controller with on-chip transceiver, eliminating external PHY components and bill-of-material cost. The 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core plus 16 KB SRAM supports composite HID (keyboard + mouse + media) without DMA starvation. The 6-channel SERCOM lets you talk to an external LED driver, an NFC tag, and a status display simultaneously. The 128 KB Flash holds HID descriptor tables and application code with room for vendor-specific features such as gesture recognition.

⚡

Smart Metering Endpoints

Smart metering endpoints including gas, water, and heat meters leverage the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT's 1.62 V minimum supply and SleepWalking peripherals to run from a single lithium cell for a decade. The Cortex-M0+ performs pulse counting and ADC sampling on wake-up, then returns to backup mode drawing only the RTC current. The 12-bit ADC provides enough resolution for thermal flow sensing or resistive water-quality probes, while SERCOMs drive an LCD glass or a wireless M-Bus module. Industrial temperature grade supports outdoor meter enclosures, and the device is supported by the Microchip metering application note library.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Conditioning

Industrial sensor conditioning boards use the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT to digitize analog signals, linearize sensor output, and forward data over RS-485 or CAN. Its 12-bit ADC and 6 SERCOMs allow simultaneous connection of multiple 4-20 mA current loops via external sense resistors and amplifiers. The Cortex-M0+ handles compensation tables and diagnostics while staying below 100 uA/MHz. The -40 C to +105 C industrial grade is essential for cabinet-mounted installations. Two 16-bit TCC timers support PWM or quadrature decoder inputs from encoders, eliminating the need for a dedicated timer ASIC.

📱

Consumer Remote Controls

Universal remote controls benefit from the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT's low standby current under 5 uA, integrated IR timer counter for carrier generation, and 128 KB Flash that fits IR database libraries for hundreds of A/V brands. The Cortex-M0+ runs gesture-recognition or voice-trigger pre-processing while consuming milliwatts of average power. The 26-GPIO version (in 32-pin TQFP) accommodates a touch slider, status LEDs, and a tactile keypad. Rechargeable designs benefit from the 1.62 V minimum that runs directly off a Li-ion cell at 5 percent state of charge.

🔧

Educational & Maker Platforms

Maker boards and STEM educational platforms often pair the ATSAMD20E17A-ANT with the Arduino core or CircuitPython runtime because its Cortex-M0+ delivers real-MCU performance at accessible prices, with 128 KB Flash and 16 KB SRAM supporting code-rich projects and libraries such as BLE stacks or audio synthesizers. Native USB enables drag-and-drop programming without an external programmer, while the SWD interface supports Atmel-ICE debugging. The 7x7 mm TQFP package is breadboard-friendly through breakout boards, and Microchip provides a complete ASF and Harmony 3 software ecosystem with example code for peripherals.

설계 노트

Place a 100 nF 0402 ceramic bypass capacitor within 5 mm of every VDD and VDDIO pin pair. Add a bulk 10 uF ceramic (or 22 uF/10 uF tantalum) on the main 3.3 V rail close to the MCU. For USB applications, keep the bypass pair within 2 mm of pin 27 (VDDIO) and minimize the trace inductance to ground. Estimated: total inrush for USB hot-plug at 3.3 V is approximately 50 mA peak, so the regulator must supply that surge without sagging more than 50 mV to prevent brown-out resets.

Route the SWD signals (SWDIO, SWCLK, NRST) on the same layer as the MCU with no via transitions, and keep them away from USB DP/DM differential pair with at least 3W of clearance. Place a 2x5 pin 0.05 in header footprint near the chip for the Atmel-ICE or J-Link debugger so engineers can hand-solder a debug probe during board bring-up. Provide a 0 ohm jumper or test pad on the USB DP line for adding inline series resistors during EMI compliance testing.

Keep the 32.768 kHz crystal within 5 mm of pins PA00 and PA01 (TOSC pins) and route the traces symmetrically with a ground guard ring for reliable RTC operation across the full -40 C to +105 C range. For USB applications, length-match the DP and DM traces to within 150 mil (3.8 mm) and route them over an unbroken ground plane, with the differential 90 ohm impedance held to within 10 percent tolerance per the USB 2.0 specification.

Don't forget to enable the NVMCTRL erase-write lock bits before programming custom flash areas; otherwise user firmware will overwrite bootloaders unintentionally. Do not feed DP/DM directly to a USB-C CC logic chip - this SAM D20 design has only USB 2.0 Full-Speed, so use a USB-A or USB-B connector or a TUSB320E1 USB-C controller externally. Never exceed 3.63 V on VDD/VDDIO even momentarily - the brown-out detector will reset the MCU above 3.7 V.
