AD7876CR-REEL Overview
What is a successive-approximation ADC? An SAR ADC is a precision data converter that performs a binary search across an internal capacitive DAC to digitize an analog input, settling one bit per conversion clock. The SAR architecture sits in the converter hierarchy between flash ADCs (fastest, lowest resolution) and sigma-delta ADCs (highest resolution, slowest). The AD7876 belongs to the broader category of data converters / signal chain ICs, specifically the precision mid-speed sampling ADC segment used in industrial, instrumentation and DSP front-ends.
Key features of the AD7876 include a 2 µs acquisition track-and-hold amplifier, an 8 µs successive-approximation ADC core, ±10 V input range with overvoltage protection, and parallel (8/12-bit), byte, and serial digital interface options. The part delivers 72 dB SNR at a 10 kHz input and is fully specified for dynamic DSP parameters including signal-to-noise ratio, harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion. Internal laser-trimmed scaling resistors and reference settle to within ±1 LSB.
Architecturally, the AD7876 integrates a bipolar input front-end (resistor-scaled ±10 V), input protection clamps, the track/hold, the 2.5 V buried-Zener reference, the SAR logic and clock oscillator, plus a flexible three-state digital output port. The -REEL suffix indicates the tape-and-reel packaging option for high-volume SMT assembly. Operating from +5 V (VDD) and -5 V (VSS) supplies, it draws approximately 15 mW of power.
Typical applications include industrial process control loops, multi-channel data acquisition systems, precision instrumentation, DSP front-ends, motor control position feedback and portable battery-powered measurement equipment. The wide ±10 V input range and dynamic specifications make it particularly suited to digitizing signals after sensor conditioning.
When designing with the AD7876, provide well-bypassed analog and digital supplies and route AGND and DGND as a star ground to the system analog ground. For best dynamic performance in DSP applications, refer to the manufacturer's recommended layout in the datasheet.

Typical Applications
AD7876CR-REEL is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Process Control Loops, Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Systems, DSP Front-End Signal Conditioning, Precision Instrumentation, Motor Control Position Feedback, Portable Battery-Powered Measurement.
Industrial Process Control Loops
Digitizes ±10 V analog signals from pressure, flow and temperature transmitters in 4-20 mA-loop-replacement and PLC analog input modules. The AD7876CR-REEL's ±10 V bipolar input eliminates external resistor dividers, its 100 kSPS throughput handles multiplexed 8-16 channels at 1 kHz per channel, and 72 dB SNR delivers the 12-bit accuracy required for closed-loop PID control. Power is typically drawn from the same ±5 V rails already present on the analog backplane, simplifying isolation and EMC design.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Systems
Front-end digitizer for PC-based DAQ boards, PXI cards and USB measurement modules. The AD7876CR-REEL's 12-bit resolution, 100 kSPS throughput and parallel/byte/serial interface let a single IC interface directly to a DSP, microcontroller or FPGA data bus. Combined with an external analog multiplexer such as AD7502 or ADG506, one AD7876 can scan 16 channels at 6 kSPS each, satisfying the needs of vibration, strain-gauge and general-purpose laboratory DAQ systems within a 24-pin SOIC footprint.
Recommended
DSP Front-End Signal Conditioning
Provides the analog-to-digital conversion stage for DSP-based audio processing, motor control and digital-control power systems. The AD7876CR-REEL's 72 dB SNR at 10 kHz input and dynamic specifications for harmonic distortion (THD) and intermodulation distortion (IMD) make it well suited to digitizing audio-band signals before feeding them to an ADSP-21xx, TMS320 or SHARC processor. The on-chip 2.5 V reference and ±10 V input allow direct connection to industrial sensor outputs without front-end gain stages.
Recommended
Precision Instrumentation
Suitable for digital multimeters, bench-top instrumentation, oscilloscope front-end auxiliary digitizers and medical monitoring equipment. The AD7876CR-REEL's laser-trimmed internal reference achieves ±1 LSB initial accuracy, and its 12-bit no-missing-codes performance guarantees monotonic conversion critical for measurement integrity. Industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range supports laboratory and field instrumentation, and the SOIC-24 wide-body package provides adequate thermal margin for continuous 100 kSPS operation.
Recommended
Motor Control Position Feedback
Digitizes analog resolver or encoder-derived feedback signals in brushless DC and AC servo drives. The AD7876CR-REEL's ±10 V input accommodates the output of standard resolver-to-digital converter analog signals or current-sense amplifiers, and 100 kSPS throughput is sufficient for position update rates up to 20 kHz in high-performance servo loops. The 8 µs conversion latency fits within typical 50 µs current-loop control cycles used in vector-control motor drives.
Recommended
Portable Battery-Powered Measurement
Suitable for handheld data loggers, field instruments and battery-powered sensor readouts where low power and single-supply operation are valued. The AD7876CR-REEL draws 15 mW from ±5 V, and the internal reference eliminates the quiescent current of external reference components. Power-down via the CONVERT START pin reduces idle supply current to the microampere range, extending battery life during standby intervals between sample bursts in remote monitoring installations.

Design Notes
Bypass VDD (+5 V) and VSS (-5 V) with 10 µF tantalum and 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors placed within 5 mm of the supply pins. Star-route both supplies back to a single low-impedance analog ground point. Use a ferrite bead between the digital +5 V rail and the analog +5 V rail to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into the reference, which directly degrades SNR.
Route analog ground (AGND, pin 17) and digital ground (DGND, pin 24) as separate traces that join only at the system star-ground point near the power entry. Keep analog input (AIN) traces short and guarded with a driven shield if the source impedance is high. The SOIC-24 wide-body package provides adequate thermal dissipation; however, place the part away from digital switching heat sources on the PCB.
For best dynamic performance in DSP applications, drive the AIN pin from a low-impedance buffer (op-amp output stage) with a source impedance under 1 kΩ. Series resistance degrades the track-and-hold acquisition accuracy and adds harmonic distortion. Place a 10 nF ceramic capacitor directly at the AIN pin to absorb track-and-hold charge-injection glitches at the start of each conversion.
The AD7876 requires dual ±5 V supplies; it is not a single-supply ADC. Do not connect VSS to ground or the part will draw excessive current and exhibit invalid conversion data. The MODE pin is latched at power-on; pull-up or pull-down resistors must hold the logic level stable until CONVST begins, or the interface may default to an unexpected state and stall the read cycle.
