AD7693BCPZRL Overview
A SAR ADC is a successive-approximation-register analog-to-digital converter that performs a binary search through an internal capacitive DAC to produce a digital output in N conversion cycles for N-bit resolution. The SAR architecture sits in the broader taxonomy of ADC -> data converter -> signal chain IC -> semiconductor. SAR ADCs are valued for low latency, deterministic throughput, and excellent DC accuracy, making them a leading choice for multiplexed data-acquisition systems and precision instrumentation.
Key features include a 500 kSPS throughput with no latency between conversions, true differential input with wide common-mode range, and an optional external reference up to 5 V for input-span scaling. An SDI input enables daisy-chaining multiple ADCs onto a three-wire serial bus, while an optional BUSY indicator simplifies host timing on fast acquisitions. The 10-lead LFCSP package is pin-for-pin compatible with the 16-bit AD7687 and AD7688 and with the 18-bit AD7690 and AD7691, allowing PCB reuse across a resolution ladder.
The internal architecture uses a charge-redistribution capacitive DAC and an on-chip clock for conversion, eliminating the need for an external high-speed serial clock. The analog-input structure accepts unipolar 0 V to VREF and true-bipolar ±VREF with proper driver design, and the device includes internal reference buffers to minimize analog-input current. Proprietary CMRR and THD optimization yields 102 dB typical SNR and −100 dB THD at the audio Nyquist, which is important for instrumentation front ends.
Typical applications include industrial process control (4-20 mA loop monitoring), portable or rack-mount medical instrumentation, precision weigh scales and strain-gauge digitizers, multichannel multiplexed data-acquisition boards, and battery-powered test-and-measurement equipment. Designers choose the AD7693 when low noise, wide common-mode input, and fast throughput are required.
When designing with the AD7693, pay attention to the input-driver bandwidth: the SAR input presents a switched-capacitor load that requires a settling-friendly op-amp (often the AD8021 or AD8251) and a small RC between driver and ADC input. Decouple VDD and VIO with low-ESR 10 µF and 0.1 µF ceramics placed as close as possible to the pins, and keep the REF capacitor (4.7 µF typical) close to the REF pin to preserve linearity.

Typical Applications
AD7693BCPZRL is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Process Control (4-20 mA Loop), Precision Weigh Scales and Strain-Gauge Digitization, Portable Medical Instrumentation, Multichannel Data-Acquisition Boards, Battery-Powered Test & Measurement, Automotive Sensor Digitization.
Industrial Process Control (4-20 mA Loop)
The AD7693BCPZRL is an excellent fit for digitizing 4-20 mA current loops in industrial process control. Its pseudo-bipolar differential input directly digitizes the voltage across a sense resistor (typically 5 V full-scale), and its 500 kSPS throughput enables oversampling of multiple channels through an external mux. The 102 dB typical SNR preserves long-term calibration accuracy across the industrial -40 °C to +85 °C range, and the wide common-mode rejection simplifies the input protection network.
Recommended
Precision Weigh Scales and Strain-Gauge Digitization
Strain-gauge bridges output very small differential signals (often 1-10 mV/V) on top of large common-mode voltages, making the AD7693BCPZRL a natural fit. Its true differential input rejects thermocouple and 50/60 Hz line-frequency common-mode noise, while its low INL of ±1 LSB preserves the linearity required for calibrated weigh-scale measurements. The 7 mW power dissipation also suits battery-powered portable scales, and the wide external-reference range allows direct scaling to the bridge excitation voltage for maximum dynamic range.
Recommended
Portable Medical Instrumentation
For portable medical instrumentation such as patient monitors and diagnostic analyzers, the AD7693BCPZRL provides the precision needed for ECG, SpO2, and electrochemical-sensor front ends. The device is specified to -40 °C to +85 °C for device-temperature environments inside a portable enclosure, and its 1 µA power-down current enables battery-saving duty-cycling between measurements. The daisy-chain SPI interface minimizes microcontroller pin count when multiple sensor channels are digitized, while the separate VIO rail allows direct connection to a 1.8 V MCU without level shifters.
Recommended
Multichannel Data-Acquisition Boards
In multichannel data-acquisition systems the AD7693BCPZRL delivers the throughput needed to scan a multiplexed front end at high effective per-channel rates. Its 500 kSPS rate allows, for example, a 4-channel system to be oversampled at 100 kSPS per channel with synchronization, while the daisy-chain SPI interface supports multiple ADCs on one bus for parallel-channel architectures. The wide analog input common-mode range directly digitizes multiplexed bipolar signals without an external instrumentation amp, reducing BOM and board area.
Recommended
Battery-Powered Test & Measurement
Battery-powered test-and-measurement equipment such as handheld oscilloscope probes, field-installable data loggers, and portable spectrum analyzers benefit from the AD7693BCPZRL's 7 mW typical power and 1 µA power-down current. The wide 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply can be derived from a USB or Li-Ion-boosted rail, and the separate VIO allows direct connection to modern 1.8 V or 3.3 V MCUs and FPGAs. The optional BUSY indicator removes the need for software timing loops, freeing the MCU to handle radio or USB duties between conversions.
Recommended
Automotive Sensor Digitization
The AD7693BCPZRL is well suited to non-safety-critical automotive sensor digitization such as HVAC pressure sensors, seat-occupancy detection, and battery-management current sense. Its pseudo-bipolar input handles the noisy transients and ground shifts of an automotive 12 V bus, while the -40 °C to +85 °C specification covers the cabin and under-hood sensor environment. For safety-critical applications requiring AEC-Q100 qualification, consider the automotive-grade pin-compatible ADI family members noted in the datasheet rather than the consumer AD7693BCPZRL.

Design Notes
Decouple VDD and VIO with a 10 µF X7R ceramic capacitor and a 0.1 µF X7R ceramic in parallel, placed within 5 mm of the package pins and routed directly to the ground plane via short vias. Place the 4.7 µF REF bypass capacitor directly between the REF pin and GND, with no signal routing on the REF trace. The exposed pad (EP) must be soldered to a continuous analog ground plane with at least four thermal vias to the inner ground layer for thermal dissipation and to meet the device's specified INL.
The SAR input presents a switched-capacitor load that draws transient current spikes during acquisition. Use a low-impedance, wideband driver such as the AD8021 or AD8251 between the analog input source and the ADC pins, with a 20-50 Ω series resistor and a few nF of RC between driver output and ADC input to isolate the driver from the kickback. Avoid using long op-amp output traces, which add parasitic inductance and degrade settling time at 500 kSPS. Keep differential traces matched in length and well clear of digital switching nodes by at least 3 trace widths.
Estimated: at 500 kSPS, 5 V supply, and 7 mW power dissipation, the junction temperature rise above ambient equals 0.007 W x theta_JA. Using a typical 4-LFCSP theta_JA of 50 °C/W on a 2-layer JEDEC test board yields a 0.35 °C rise, which is well below the 125 °C max junction rating. Even on a minimal 1 oz copper 2-layer board no heatsink is required. For highest accuracy in elevated-temperature environments, mount the EPAD over multiple thermal vias to a dedicated analog ground copper pour.
Do not exceed 5.5 V on the VDD or VIO pin. Do not drive the analog input above VDD + 0.3 V or below GND - 0.3 V, as the ESD diodes will forward-bias and inject non-linear charge into the sampling capacitor, corrupting the next sample. Always hold CNV high through the conversion; reading SDO on the rising edge of SCK after a falling CNV will return undefined data. The BUSY pin (used in some interface modes) requires a weak pull-up if used; leave open if unused per the datasheet.
