AD7892AR-1REEL Overview
An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a mixed-signal semiconductor that translates real-world analog voltages into discrete digital codes for processing by microcontrollers, DSPs, or FPGAs. Within the data-converter hierarchy, SAR (successive-approximation register) ADCs sit between flash converters and sigma-delta ADCs in speed and resolution: they offer 8-18 bits of resolution with 0.1-10 MSPS throughput and low latency, making them the workhorse for multiplexed control loops, instrumentation, and motor control. The AD7892 family belongs to this SAR category and is further classified as a bipolar-input, single-supply precision ADC for industrial measurement applications.
Key specifications include 12-bit resolution (no missing codes), 500 kSPS throughput (the AD7892-1 grade; the AD7892-3 grade reaches 600 kSPS), bipolar ±5 V or ±10 V analog input range, ±5 V single-supply operation, internal 2.5 V reference, and 1.47 µs ADC conversion time. The 24-pin SOIC wide-body package offers 0.295 inch (7.50 mm) body width and operates from -40 °C to +85 °C ambient, suitable for industrial environments.
Architecturally, the converter combines a high-speed comparator, charge-redistribution DAC array, and successive-approximation register clocked from an internal oscillator. The on-chip track/hold front-end settles in ~150 ns, allowing full throughput at the rated 500 kSPS without external buffering for many sensor signals.
Typical applications include industrial process control, motor control feedback loops, multi-channel data acquisition systems, instrumentation front-ends, and precision transducer signal conditioning. Design engineers select the AD7892-1 when bipolar input range and single-supply operation are required in a compact analog front-end.

Typical Applications
AD7892AR-1REEL is suitable for 7 applications: Industrial Process Control, Motor Control Current Sensing, Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Systems, Instrumentation and Precision Transducer Digitizing, Power-Line Monitoring and Energy Meters, Medical Patient-Monitoring Front-Ends, Audio and Acoustic Test Equipment.
Industrial Process Control
The AD7892AR-1REEL's bipolar ±5 V or ±10 V input range paired with a single +5 V supply makes it ideal for digitizing 4-20 mA transmitter loop outputs, thermocouple-amplifier signals, and pressure/load-cell front-ends. Its 1.47 µs conversion time and 500 kSPS throughput let a single part multiplex four sensors at >100 kSPS each, while the on-chip 2.5 V reference removes external reference drift.
Recommended
Motor Control Current Sensing
In BLDC and servo drives, the AD7892AR-1REEL samples shunt-resistor voltage drops across the three phases with sub-2 µs latency thanks to its 1.47 µs conversion time. The bipolar input directly accommodates bi-directional phase currents without external op-amp inversion, and 500 kSPS throughput supports PWM frequencies up to 50 kHz with synchronous sampling. The 24-pin SOIC package fits well within low-side shunt amplifier layouts.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Systems
Using the AD7892AR-1REEL with an external analog multiplexer, designers can build 8- or 16-channel data acquisition front-ends that aggregate up to 500 kSPS aggregate sample rate. The internal track/hold eliminates front-end buffer amps for settling times of <150 ns, and the serial-output mode reduces PCB routing density in slot-card PXI/cPCI designs. The wide-body SOIC handles the thermal load in densely populated chassis.
Recommended
Instrumentation and Precision Transducer Digitizing
The AD7892AR-1REEL is well matched to precision load cells, strain gauges, and LVDT front-ends that produce bipolar millivolt-level outputs. Its 12-bit no-missing-codes linearity, integrated track/hold, and ±10 V input range accept conditioned signals directly, while the choice of two's-complement, offset-binary or straight-binary output codes simplifies software-side scale-and-offset calibration on 32-bit microcontrollers.
Recommended
Power-Line Monitoring and Energy Meters
Single-phase and polyphase energy meters use the AD7892AR-1REEL to digitize current-transformer and Rogowski-coil outputs simultaneously with the line voltage waveform. With 500 kSPS throughput the part captures all relevant harmonics up to the 50th (per IEC 61000-4-7 instrument classes), and the bipolar input handles both half-cycles without external bias circuitry. The fixed +5 V supply simplifies isolation-barrier design.
Recommended
Medical Patient-Monitoring Front-Ends
ECG, EEG, and SpO2 front-ends benefit from the AD7892AR-1REEL's bipolar input range and 12-bit linear-no-missing-codes performance when sampling electrode signals at 250-500 kSPS aggregate. The internal 2.5 V reference stabilizes ratiometric measurements, and the 24-pin SOIC package footprint is well documented for medical IEC 60601-1 dielectric clearance layouts in low-power bedside monitors.
Recommended
Audio and Acoustic Test Equipment
Test and measurement equipment digitizing acoustic signals from microphones, hydrophones, and accelerometers uses the AD7892AR-1REEL for its low-noise SAR conversion at 500 kSPS, supporting wideband acoustic analysis up to 200 kHz audio bandwidth. Serial output mode keeps the PCB within tight chassis layouts. For highest-performance audio, ADI recommends the dual-channel AD7266 family.

Key Differentiators
- Same die with RoHS-compliant finish (vs AD7892AR-1REEL (this part))

- 14-bit resolution upgrade in same family (vs AD7264BSTZ-5-RL7)
Design Notes
Power the AD7892AR-1REEL from a clean +5 V analog rail; place a 10 µF tantalum + 0.1 µF ceramic pair directly at the VDD pin and repeat decoupling at the VDRIVE pin (when used). The on-chip 2.5 V reference output needs its CAP pin loaded with a 1 µF ceramic for stability. For best dynamic performance, place a ferrite bead between the analog and digital +5 V rails.
Route the analog input traces (AIN/HI, RANGE) as a guarded differential pair, kept away from the parallel data bus to reduce digital kickback. The DB0-DB11 lines should be impedance-controlled when traces exceed 50 mm. Tie unused digital inputs (CS, WR, RD) to a defined logic level - never leave them floating, or the converter's interface state becomes unpredictable at startup.
Do not exceed VDD + 0.3 V on any digital input or sink more than 50 mA through the VDD pin during hot-plug events. Mis-setting the RANGE pin to ±5 V (instead of ±10 V) while expecting bipolar 10 V swings clips the input at full scale and corrupts readings. When cascading two ADCs through DIN/DOUT, observe the daisy-chain timing diagram in the datasheet exactly, since tDSDT and tDCSH are asymmetric.
Compliance Information
The 'AR' suffix indicates the legacy SnPb (lead-bearing) finish and is NOT RoHS compliant. For RoHS-compliant production, choose the 'ARZ' suffix variant. This part is not AEC-Q100 qualified - not intended for automotive underhood applications.
