DRV8804PWPR Overview
A low-side driver is a switching topology where the load is tied to a positive supply and the driver transistor pulls the load to ground to energize it. Compared to high-side or H-bridge drivers, low-side drivers are simpler, lower-cost, and well suited to unipolar loads where current direction is fixed. The DRV8804 belongs to the broader category of motor and motion driver ICs, which sit between a microcontroller and electromechanical loads such as stepper motors, DC motors, relays, and solenoids. It supports unipolar stepper drive, brushed DC motor drive, and generic low-side switching.
Key features include a wide 8.2 V to 60 V operating range, integrated clamping diodes for inductive transient suppression, parallelable outputs for higher current, and individual channel enable and fault reporting through SPI. The device also provides thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, and an open-drain fault output to flag overcurrent events to the host controller.
Typical applications include unipolar stepper motor drives (one coil at a time), brushed DC motor drivers, relay and solenoid arrays, valve and actuator control, and LED string driving in industrial and building-automation systems. The HTSSOP-16 PowerPAD package enables sustained 1.5 A per-channel operation with proper PCB thermal design.
When designing with this device, ensure the PowerPAD is soldered to at least 1 sq. in. of copper to keep junction temperature within the 150 C limit, and add a bulk capacitor at VM to absorb motor back-EMF. The SPI interface requires proper CS framing and clock polarity consistent with the datasheet timing diagram.

Typical Applications
DRV8804PWPR is suitable for 6 applications: Unipolar Stepper Motor Drive, Brushed DC Motor Driver (Bidirectional via H-Bridge Pairing), Relay and Solenoid Array Driver, LED String and Display Driver, Building Automation Valve and Damper Actuator Control, Print and Paper Handling Stepper Sequencing.
Unipolar Stepper Motor Drive
The DRV8804PWPR directly drives a 5-wire or 6-wire unipolar stepper motor in full-step or half-step sequence using its four integrated low-side N-FET channels. The 500 mΩ RDS(on) FETs handle up to 1.5 A per coil when only one coil is active, which is the typical full-step operating condition. Built-in catch diodes clamp the inductive kickback that occurs when a coil is de-energized, eliminating the need for external flyback components. SPI control lets a microcontroller sequence the four channels precisely and report open-circuit or short-circuit faults back via the nFAULT pin and status register.
Recommended
Brushed DC Motor Driver (Bidirectional via H-Bridge Pairing)
Two DRV8804 channels can be paired externally to form a half-bridge / full-bridge driver for a single bidirectional brushed DC motor. Each low-side channel sinks up to 2.3 A peak, providing high-torque drive from an 8.2 V to 60 V supply rail. The wide VM range allows the same board design to support 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V industrial bus systems without component changes. Integrated overcurrent protection prevents FET damage during motor stall or wiring faults, while the SPI fault register lets the host detect and recover from these events without a complete system reset.
Recommended
Relay and Solenoid Array Driver
The DRV8804PWPR's four channels are well matched to industrial relay, solenoid, and valve arrays where each output energizes an independent inductive load. The integrated catch diodes absorb the inductive kickback when the coil is de-energized, which is critical for relay contact life and EMI suppression. Per-channel overcurrent protection prevents coil shorts from damaging the FETs, and the SPI fault register identifies which channel faulted. Operating up to 60 V enables direct connection to 24 V and 48 V industrial control cabinets without additional interface circuitry.
Recommended
LED String and Display Driver
Each low-side channel of the DRV8804PWPR can sink the constant-current return path of a high-brightness LED string, providing per-string PWM dimming via SPI commands. The 60 V VM rating supports long LED chains of 5 to 20 white LEDs in series at 24 V nominal supplies, and the low RDS(on) minimizes thermal dissipation. SPI control enables individual channel brightness and on/off sequencing for animated or multiplexed signage. The built-in overcurrent protection prevents LED string shorts from damaging the driver FETs.
Recommended
Building Automation Valve and Damper Actuator Control
HVAC and building automation systems use the DRV8804PWPR to drive multiple 24 V damper actuators, valve solenoids, and latching relays from a central controller. The wide 8.2 V to 60 V supply range accepts 24 VAC rectified bus power directly, eliminating intermediate regulators. Per-channel fault reporting through SPI simplifies wiring diagnostics in distributed systems where running individual fault lines back to the controller would be costly. The HTSSOP-16 PowerPAD package fits into the compact actuator housings typical of building automation equipment.
Recommended
Print and Paper Handling Stepper Sequencing
Office printers, plotters, and paper-handling equipment use multiple small unipolar steppers for paper feed, print-head carriage, and tray selection. The DRV8804PWPR can drive one such stepper per IC, with SPI allowing a single host to control multiple drivers daisy-chained on one bus. This minimizes MCU pin count and PCB routing compared to discrete transistor drivers. The integrated protection features - overcurrent, thermal shutdown, and undervoltage lockout - protect the driver from paper-jam-induced stalls that draw excessive coil current.

Design Notes
Solder the exposed PowerPAD to at least 1 sq. in. of top-layer copper to achieve the datasheet theta_JA of approximately 35 C/W. At 1.5 A continuous per channel with all four channels active, total device dissipation can exceed 2 W; without adequate copper the junction will quickly reach the 150 C thermal shutdown threshold.
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic bypass capacitor as close as possible to the VM and VDD pins, plus a bulk electrolytic or tantalum of at least 100 uF at the VM pin to absorb motor back-EMF and supply inrush. Route the OUTx traces with at least 20 mil copper width for 1.5 A continuous current and keep high-current loops small to minimize EMI.
Do not exceed 60 V on VM; load-dump transients in 24 V automotive systems can reach 65 V. Note that SPI communication requires mode 0 (CPOL=0, CPHA=0) and a maximum 6.25 MHz SCLK - higher clock rates will corrupt data. When daisy-chaining multiple DRV8804 devices, ensure the SDO-to-SDI propagation delay fits within the SPI frame timing budget.
Keep the logic ground (GND pin) and power ground return from the load separated at the IC and joined only at the bulk capacitor negative terminal. This star-ground topology prevents motor current transients from disturbing the SPI logic levels. Place the nFAULT pull-up resistor near the IC to avoid false triggering from capacitive coupling on long traces.
