LTC2188IUP Overview
What is a dual simultaneous-sampling ADC? A dual simultaneous-sampling ADC is a category of data converter that captures two analog input channels through independent sample-and-hold circuits driven by a common clock, ensuring channel-to-channel skew of picoseconds rather than nanoseconds. In the broader taxonomy, the LTC2188 family sits within successive-approximation / pipelined ADCs -> data converters -> mixed-signal ICs -> signal chain components. The simultaneous-sample property matters whenever phase or IQ information must be preserved between channels (communications, beamforming, predistortion).
Key features of the LTC2188IUP include a single 1.8 V analog supply, LVDS or CMOS configurable digital outputs, optional internal dither to improve SFDR at small input levels, and a low-jitter clock input that relaxes the noise requirements of the front-end PLL. The device integrates input kick-back suppression and selectable input bandwidth, allowing direct connection to wideband IF signals without a front-end buffer. Power dissipation scales gracefully with sample rate, allowing the user to throttle clocks for low-power idle states.
Typical applications for the LTC2188IUP span LTE/4G/5G baseband digitizers, multi-standard software-defined radios, multi-channel data acquisition front-ends for instrumentation and beamforming arrays used in radar and medical imaging prototypes. Designers who must interface to an FPGA typically use the LVDS output mode to preserve timing margins at 20 Msps on long board traces.
When laying out a board for the LTC2188IUP, keep analog and digital ground returns joined only at the exposed pad, and place the 0.1 microfarad ceramic decoupling capacitors within 1 mm of each supply pin. The 64-QFN exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground plane to keep junction temperature within the 31 C/W theta_JA budget; inadequate thermal connection will degrade AC linearity.

Typical Applications
LTC2188IUP is suitable for 6 applications: LTE / 4G / 5G Baseband Digitizer, Multi-Standard Software-Defined Radio (SDR), Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Front-End, Beamforming Array for Radar / Medical Imaging Prototypes, Multi-Channel Industrial Test Instrumentation, Direct IF Sampling Communications Receiver.
LTE / 4G / 5G Baseband Digitizer
The LTC2188IUP digitizes multi-carrier LTE baseband signals with 20 Msps simultaneous dual-channel capture and 77 dB SNR. The part's LVDS output mode preserves timing margin when routed to an FPGA across backplane interconnects. Power dissipation scales linearly with clock rate, supporting clock-gated idle states on the carrier board.
Recommended
Multi-Standard Software-Defined Radio (SDR)
The LTC2188IUP's 20 Msps sample rate and 90 dB SFDR support direct IF sampling of multiple radio standards (LTE, GSM, WCDMA, Tetra) using a single ADC pair, reducing RF chain complexity. Its dual channels accept phase-coherent IQ pairs without inter-channel skew, which is essential for SDR demodulators. Industrial temperature grade permits deployment in outdoor infrastructure cabinets.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Front-End
Two simultaneous-sampling ADC channels at 77 dB SNR make the LTC2188IUP a clean digitizer for instrumentation front-ends where multiple analog sensors (vibration, acoustic, strain) must be captured with zero channel-to-channel skew. The exposed-pad QFN ensures thermal stability over long multi-channel acquisitions at full 20 Msps throughput.
Recommended
Beamforming Array for Radar / Medical Imaging Prototypes
The dual simultaneous-sampling architecture of the LTC2188IUP preserves sub-nanosecond phase coherence between two receiver channels, which is a primary requirement for early-stage beamforming arrays used in phased-array radar and ultrasound research prototypes. The 77 dB SNR and 90 dB SFDR keep weak signals in the noise floor of the receiver chain.
Recommended
Multi-Channel Industrial Test Instrumentation
The LTC2188IUP digitizes multiple test points simultaneously at 20 Msps with 16-bit resolution, supporting industrial test and measurement platforms (vibration analysis, power-quality monitoring, transient capture). The 1.8 V analog supply minimizes dissipation in compact chassis designs, and the -40C to +85C range handles factory-floor thermal stress.
Recommended
Direct IF Sampling Communications Receiver
The 20 Msps sample rate and 77 dB SNR enable direct IF sampling of communications signals up to ~10 MHz IF, removing the need for a complete mixer / IF amplifier / downconversion stage and shrinking BOM. The LVDS output mode preserves timing across backplane traces, supporting modular receiver chassis for software-defined architectures.

- Dual simultaneous-sampling architecture at 64-QFN UP package (vs LTC2155CUP-12)
- Industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) standard, not a special-order part (vs LTC2188CUP)
- LVDS / CMOS configurable outputs reduce FPGA pin count pressure (vs ADS6425IRGCR (TI))
Design Notes
Route analog and digital ground returns separately and stitch them only at the exposed pad (EP) on the bottom of the 64-QFN. Place 0.1 microfarat ceramic decoupling capacitors within 1 mm of every Vdd pin and a 2.2 microfarat tantalum/ceramic for Vref. The exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous ground plane - a poor solder connection here will reduce AC performance by 1 to 3 dB and increase die temperature.
Use a low-jitter clock source for the CLK+ / CLK- pair; jitter above 1 ps RMS degrades SNR by approximately 3 dB at 10 MHz IF input. Maintain 50 ohm single-ended or 100 ohm differential characteristic impedance on the clock traces. Do not route digital data lines (CMOS/LVDS) parallel to analog inputs on adjacent layers without a ground plane between them.
At full 20 Msps with both channels active and 1.8 V supply, dissipation is roughly 60 mW per channel. The 64-QFN exposed pad with theta_JA = 31 C/W keeps junction rise under 2 C even with poor board layout; however if the EP is not soldered, theta_JA can exceed 60 C/W and the part may derate to commercial temperature range. Always verify solderability of the EP during PCB design review.
Use a linear LDO (not a switching regulator) for the 1.8 V analog supply, as buck-converter switching noise couples into the analog front-end and degrades SNR. The same LDO should power Vdd_io if possible; if separate, both rails must ramp together within 100 ms to avoid CMOS output current injection during power sequencing. Add a 10 ohm ferrite bead in series for high-frequency isolation between AVDD and DVDD.
Do not apply input signals before Vdd is up; the analog input protection diodes will clamp and may inject charge into the sample-and-hold. Do not float unused input pins - leave them at mid-scale or short them to a defined reference. Do not operate the LVDS outputs without the 100 ohm termination across the receiver; the part may overstress its output drivers and cause degraded linearity over time.
Compliance Information
RoHS compliant per the PBF suffix convention (Pb-free). Not AEC-Q100 qualified - choose an automotive-grade ADC (e.g., a different LTC21xxx part or specific AEC-Q100 ADCs) for automotive applications.
