PIC18F25Q10-I/SP Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC18F25Q10-I/SP is a 32 KB Flash, 8-bit PIC microcontroller built around the enhanced mid-range PIC18 core, supplied in a 28-pin SPDIP (SP) through-hole package with industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating. The Q10 family integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs), and intelligent analog blocks, allowing designers to offload timing-critical logic from the CPU and shorten firmware development cycles. Operating voltage spans 1.8V to 5.5V with on-chip voltage regulation, and 5V operation is emphasized for noise immunity in harsh industrial environments.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small, self-contained computer-on-a-chip that integrates a CPU, Flash program memory, SRAM data memory, EEPROM, and peripherals on a single die. Within the broader taxonomy it sits under microcontroller -> embedded controller -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor. The PIC18F25Q10 belongs to Microchip's PIC18-Q10 family, which is optimized for robust real-time control and sensor-node applications that benefit from deterministic hardware-driven behavior.

Headline specifications include 64 MHz maximum CPU clock (16 MIPS at 4x PLL), 32 KB self-programmable Flash, 2 KB SRAM, 256 B EEPROM, two 10-bit ADC modules offering up to 35 channels, two comparators, two DACs, two PWMs with 16-bit resolution, CLCs, and communication peripherals comprising UART/SPI/I2C. The 5V operating range improves noise margin over 3.3V-only MCUs in motor-control and industrial sensor interfaces.

The architecture leverages an 8-bit Harvard RISC pipeline with hardware multiply and 49 instruction types, supported by the MPLAB X IDE, XC8 compiler, and Microchip's MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) for peripheral setup. Intelligent analog lets the ADC, comparator, and DAC perform hardware-triggered conversions without CPU intervention, reducing latency and jitter.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, motor control (BLDC, stepper), HVAC actuator control, LED lighting drivers, low-end touch HMI, battery-powered metering, and industrial automation. For automotive body electronics, the matching PIC18F25Q10-E/SP and AEC-Q100 Q10 variants provide qualified alternatives.

When designing with this MCU, prioritize using CLCs for hardware state machines and the DMA-like Peripheral Pin Select to free the core for application code. Decouple VDD/VSS with 100 nF ceramic caps placed within 3 mm of the package pins, and provide bulk capacitance on AVDD if ADC accuracy is critical.

Typical Applications

PIC18F25Q10-I/SP is suitable for 7 applications: Industrial Sensor Nodes, BLDC and Stepper Motor Control, HVAC Actuator Control, LED Lighting Drivers, Low-End Touch HMI, Battery-Powered Metering, Industrial Automation Edge Nodes.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP is well matched to industrial 4-20 mA and 0-10 V sensor nodes because its 5V native I/O tolerates the wide common-mode noise of factory environments without level shifters. The 32 KB Flash holds sensor calibration tables and linearization firmware, while the two 10-bit ADC modules with up to 35 channels let one MCU scan temperature, pressure, and flow inputs in sequence. CLCs encode hysteresis and window-comparator logic in hardware so the firmware only services alarm events, not the comparator itself.

🏭

BLDC and Stepper Motor Control

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP's two 16-bit PWMs with complementary outputs and dead-band control make it a strong fit for driving BLDC and stepper motors below 50 W. The 5V I/O directly interfaces to gate drivers such as the MCP8024 or FAN8100MTCX without external translation, and the CLCs implement hardware commutation timing independent of firmware latency. Combined with the Q43 family's hardware limit timers, the design satisfies UL 61800-5-1 safety requirements with reduced firmware overhead.

🏭

HVAC Actuator Control

HVAC damper and valve actuators benefit from the PIC18F25Q10-I/SP's deterministic CLC state machines and 16-bit PWM resolution for smooth proportional control. 5V tolerance eliminates the need for level shifters to industrial 24V actuator drivers, and the 32 KB Flash stores zone-scheduling logic plus Modbus or BACnet stacks. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade handles mechanical rooms and rooftop installations without derating.

💡

LED Lighting Drivers

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP drives constant-current LED strings using its 16-bit PWM and zero-cross detect CLC to implement phase-cut dimming (TRIAC compatible). Hardware limit timers handle inrush protection, and the 32 KB Flash accommodates DALI-104 addressable lighting protocols. The wide 1.8V-5.5V supply range simplifies single-cell Li-ion and 24V commercial lighting designs using the same firmware image.

📱

Low-End Touch HMI

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP supports mTouch capacitive-touch sensing through the CLC and CVD front-end, removing the need for an external touch controller. 5V tolerance and on-chip comparators debounce membrane keypads and rotary encoders directly. The 32 KB Flash stores menu logic and 8x8 LED matrix animation patterns for cost-sensitive appliances.

⚡

Battery-Powered Metering

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP operates down to 1.8V and supports sleep currents below 1 uA in the Q10 family, suiting battery-powered gas, water, and electricity meters. Its 10-bit ADC achieves the linearity required for IEC 62053-21 class-1 metering, while the 256 B EEPROM retains tariff schedules and tamper counters through battery swaps. UART/SPI/I2C peripherals expose optional wireless modules such as LoRa or Wi-Fi for AMI connectivity.

🏭

Industrial Automation Edge Nodes

The PIC18F25Q10-I/SP slots into industrial edge nodes that aggregate analog signals, run PID loops locally, and forward set-points to a central PLC over RS-485. The CLCs implement hardware watchdog timers, while the dual ADC modules perform redundant acquisition for functional safety. 5V I/O and 256 B EEPROM align with IEC 61131-2 type-1 input requirements typical of process control cabinets.

Design Notes

Decouple VDD/VSS with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of the package pins. Add a 10 uF bulk capacitor on VDD when ADC accuracy is critical (better than 1 LSB at 10 bits). For battery-powered designs, use the Q10's IDLE and DOZE modes and disable unused peripherals via the PMD registers to drop active current below 1 mA at 5V / 16 MIPS.

Route the analog inputs RA0-RA5 and RE0-RE2 away from PWM-driven switching traces. Use a ground pour on the top layer stitched to the bottom ground plane with vias placed every 5 mm. Place the 32.768 kHz crystal (if used for RTCC) within 5 mm of the SOSCO/SOSCI pins with trace capacitance below 5 pF.

Do not leave unused I/O pins floating - configure them as outputs or inputs with the WPU enabled to avoid parasitic current draw. The MCLR pin must be pulled high through a 10 kohm resistor; if unused, tie to VDD directly. PPS input mapping must be unlocked (PPSLOCK cleared) before changing the PPS registers; failure to do so is a common cause of UART/SPI/I2C not working on first prototypes.
