STM8S207R6T6 Overview

The STMicroelectronics STM8S207R6T6 is a performance-line 8-bit STM8S microcontroller built around a CISC Harvard architecture core running at 24 MHz (20 MIPS) with 32 KB of on-chip Flash program memory and up to 2 KB of SRAM plus an integrated EEPROM data area. It integrates a 10-bit ADC, two 16-bit timers plus one 8-bit timer, two UARTs, SPI, I2C, and CAN, all in a 64-pin LQFP (T6 suffix) package operating from 2.95 V to 5.5 V. The device is positioned in the STM8S20xxx family which scales from 32 KB to 128 KB Flash and is intended for cost-sensitive motor-control, appliance, and industrial-control applications.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and peripherals onto one silicon die. The STM8 family uses a CISC 8-bit core with a 16-bit instruction word, giving higher code density than legacy 8051 cores while retaining the predictable interrupt latency and deterministic timing that embedded control designers prefer. The STM8S207 series specifically belongs to the STM8S "performance line," sitting above the access-line STM8S103 and below the value-line STM8S105, and is paired with ST's Cosmic, IAR, and Raisonance toolchains plus the free STVD development environment.

Key features of the STM8S207R6T6 include a 20 MIPS peak instruction throughput at 24 MHz, integrated CAN 2.0B interface, a 1 Mbyte linear address space, a single-wire SWIM debug interface, and an embedded bootloader stored in ROM for in-application Flash programming. The device offers 38 GPIOs with 5 V tolerance on most pins and supports up to 16 external interrupts. Watchdog, auto-wakeup, and a 4-level low-power run/wait/slow/halt scheme allow the device to drop quiescent current below 5 uA in Halt with full RAM retention.

Architecturally, the STM8S core pairs a 32-bit program address bus with a 24-bit data address bus and supports up to 16 Mbytes of linear addressing for data, while code is read from a separate Flash bus. This Harvard split removes fetch-decode stalls that plague older 8-bit Von Neumann designs and is the reason the family reaches 20 MIPS at 24 MHz without wait states. A 32 KB Flash variant such as the STM8S207R6 sits at the low-memory end of the family, sharing the same peripheral set as the larger 64 KB (R8) and 128 KB (RB) siblings.

Typical applications include BLDC/PMSM motor control in appliances, HVAC fan and pump control, smart metering, lighting ballast control, industrial sensor hubs, and CAN-connected remote I/O nodes. The integrated CAN controller, combined with 32 KB Flash, makes the part a good fit for distributed industrial nodes that need deterministic on-chip comms without an external transceiver MCU.

When designing with the STM8S207R6T6, pay attention to the 5 V I/O tolerance (most pins are true 5 V tolerant, but a few high-current pins are FT-compat only) and to the SWIM pin shared with NRST; the debug probe needs a tri-state buffer on the SWIM line for in-circuit debugging without disabling reset. The internal 16 MHz HSI RC is accurate to about 1 percent after user trimming, but designs that need CAN bit-time accuracy must select the external HSE crystal option.

Typical Applications

STM8S207R6T6 is suitable for 6 applications: BLDC Motor Control in Appliances, HVAC Fan and Pump Control, Smart Metering and Energy Monitoring, Industrial CAN-Connected Remote I/O, Lighting Ballast and LED Driver Control, Appliance User Interface Boards.

🏭

BLDC Motor Control in Appliances

The STM8S207R6T6 is a strong fit for sensorless and sensored BLDC motor control in washing machines, refrigerator compressors, and range hoods. Its two 16-bit timers generate complementary PWM with dead-time insertion for the three-phase inverter; the 24 MHz CPU executes field-oriented-control loops within the typical 50 us cycle budget; and the integrated CAN 2.0B controller lets the appliance talk to the master inverter board over the bus. The 32 KB Flash holds the STSW-STM8020 reference firmware without requiring an external memory, and the 5 V tolerant GPIOs directly drive most discrete gate drivers such as the L6387E.

🏭

HVAC Fan and Pump Control

In HVAC fan coils, circulation pumps, and variable-speed blowers, the STM8S207R6T6 drives a single PMSM or AC induction motor through an IPM or discrete IGBT inverter. The 10-bit ADC samples motor current and back-EMF at rates suitable for closed-loop RPM control; the 1.5 KB on-chip EEPROM stores calibration and HVAC mode profiles without external memory. Designers commonly pair it with an ST L6234 three-phase motor driver and an isolated CAN bridge for building-automation networks, while the integrated brown-out reset and watchdog keep the appliance safe during brown-out conditions.

⚡

Smart Metering and Energy Monitoring

Electricity, gas, and water meters increasingly use the STM8S207R6T6 as the local data-concentrator MCU, where it samples the metrology AFE through its 10-bit ADC, encrypts and stores consumption data in the 1.5 KB EEPROM, and forwards totals over the CAN or UART link to the upstream gateway. The 5 V tolerant UART pairs directly with legacy PLC modems while the CAN controller supports DLMS/COSEM-over-CAN field deployments. Battery-backed metering designs benefit from the Halt-mode quiescent current below 5 uA, which preserves coin-cell life between periodic wake-ups for consumption logging.

🏭

Industrial CAN-Connected Remote I/O

Distributed industrial I/O modules (digital input blocks, analog input blocks, relay output blocks) commonly deploy the STM8S207R6T6 as the field MCU. Its bxCAN interface runs CANopen or DeviceNet protocols at 125 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s; the two UARTs handle RS-485 Modbus RTU slaves or diagnostic channels; and the 38 GPIOs drive enough opto-isolated inputs and relay outputs to replace a small PLC slice. The LQFP-64 footprint makes the layout compact enough for DIN-rail housing while keeping the 5 V tolerant I/O compatible with industrial 24 V sensor rails after resistror dividers.

💡

Lighting Ballast and LED Driver Control

Electronic ballasts for fluorescent and HID lamps, and dimmable LED drivers for architectural lighting, use the STM8S207R6T6 to manage PFC stage, lamp-start sequence, and analog dimming loops. The two 16-bit timers generate the high-frequency dimming PWM and the line-frequency zero-cross detection; the 10-bit ADC reads both lamp current and mains voltage for closed-loop regulation. The CAN interface supports DALI-2 or DMX-over-CAN gateways, and the 32 KB Flash accommodates vendor-specific dimming curves and lamp-life logging in the integrated EEPROM.

📱

Appliance User Interface Boards

Touch-key and seven-segment display boards on washing machines, ovens, and induction cooktops use the STM8S207R6T6 to scan capacitive touch sensors via the STM8S TouchSensing Library, drive multiplexed LED displays, and forward knob/button events to the main appliance controller over UART or CAN. The 32 KB Flash is large enough for the touch-sensing library plus UI firmware; the 5 V tolerant GPIOs directly drive most common-cathode LED displays. Designers value the part's SWIM debug interface for rapid UI calibration without pulling the chip off the board.

STM8S207R6T6 vs STM8S207C6T6 - which is better for industrial CAN nodes?
The STM8S207R6T6 (LQFP-64, 38 GPIO) offers more I/O than the STM8S207C6T6 (LQFP-48, 38 GPIO alternative padout), but the C6 in LQFP-48 actually exposes fewer pins (about 38 GPIOs on the 64-pin and about 36 on the 48-pin footprint). For industrial CAN nodes needing at least 38 GPIOs with the larger memory map, choose the R6T6; for cost-sensitive nodes with smaller memory needs, the C6T6 in LQFP-48 is sufficient.
When should I choose STM8S207R6T6 over STM8S207R8T6?
Choose the STM8S207R6T6 (32 KB Flash) when your firmware footprint is below about 28 KB and cost matters; choose the STM8S207R8T6 (64 KB Flash) when you need 32-60 KB of code or extensive bootloader/recovery firmware. Both share the LQFP-64 footprint and identical peripheral set, so the R8 is a drop-in upgrade path if your project grows beyond 32 KB.
What is the best drop-in replacement for STM8S207R6T6?
The best drop-in replacement on the same LQFP-64 footprint is the STM8S207R8T6 (64 KB Flash, identical peripheral set, same 24 MHz core) or STM8S207CBT6 (128 KB Flash, identical pinout). For a same-pin second source, the ST STM8S207R6T6CTR (tape-and-reel packaging variant) is electrically identical. No true cross-brand pin-compatible drop-in exists - 8-bit MCU cores differ at the silicon level.

Selection Guide

Choose the STM8S207R6T6 when you need a 5 V-tolerant 8-bit MCU with integrated CAN 2.0B for industrial or appliance motor-control nodes where firmware fits within 32 KB Flash. Choose the STM8S207R8T6 (64 KB Flash) if your code is approaching the 32 KB limit or if you plan to add bootloader functionality. Choose the STM8S207CBT6 (128 KB Flash) only if you need extensive protocol stacks (CANopen, J1939) or large lookup tables. For battery-backed metering designs, consider the STM8L151C6T3 from the STM8L family which has lower quiescent current but no integrated CAN. For designs requiring USB or Ethernet, migrate to the STM32F105RCT6 or STM32F207VCT6 which retain the LQFP-64 footprint but add these peripherals at the cost of moving from 8-bit to 32-bit Cortex-M3 architecture.

Key Differentiators

  • Integrated CAN 2.0B controller on-chip (vs STM32F103RCT6 (Cortex-M3 alternative))
  • 20 MIPS at 24 MHz with deterministic interrupt latency (vs PIC16F877A (older 8-bit PIC))
  • 5 V tolerant GPIOs directly drive industrial 24 V sensor rails after dividers (vs STM32L073RBT6 (low-power Cortex-M0+))

Design Notes

The STM8S207R6T6 requires a 100 nF decoupling capacitor on VDD (pin 53) and a separate 100 nF on VDDA (pin 54), placed within 5 mm of the pins per the ST hardware design guide. The internal 1.8 V regulator needs a 1 uF X7R capacitor on VCAP (pin 61); an undersized capacitor here causes core logic brown-out at high CPU load. Bulk 4.7 uF to 10 uF tantalum or ceramic is recommended on the main VDD rail to support ADC sampling transients.

Route the HSE crystal traces (OSC_IN/OSC_OUT) symmetrically and guard them with a ground pour; keep the trace length below 5 mm and the loading capacitance within 2 pF of the datasheet-specified CL. For CAN bus designs, keep the CANH/CANL traces short and matched (within 4 mm length difference), with a 120 ohm termination at each end of the bus. The SWIM pin (60) shares the NRST function on some debug probes - isolate it with a series resistor if in-circuit debugging without disabling reset is needed.

Do not exceed 5.5 V on any I/O pin; some pins (notably high-sink pins) are 5 V tolerant only in input mode, and exceeding the abs-max voltage causes latch-up. Brown-out reset must be enabled in the option bytes for reliable field operation - factory default sometimes leaves BOR disabled. For CAN bit-timing accuracy, the HSE crystal option (not the internal HSI RC) must be selected; the HSI 1 percent accuracy is insufficient for 1 Mbit/s CAN.
