Typical Applications
TPS23521 is suitable for 6 applications: Telecom Rectifiers, Network Routers and Switches, Base Station Power Distribution, Server Power Supplies, Industrial Power Systems, Redundant Power Systems.
Telecom Rectifiers
The TPS23521 is ideal for -48V telecom rectifiers, providing hot swap capability with dual gate drive for high-current paths. Its 200V absolute maximum rating ensures survival during lightning surges per IEC61000-4-5, making it robust for outdoor and central office environments. The dual current limit allows precise control of inrush current, protecting downstream components and ensuring system stability during board insertion.
Recommended
Network Routers and Switches
In network routers and switches, the TPS23521 enables safe live insertion of line cards into backplanes. Its -10V to -80V input range accommodates various telecom voltages, while dual gate drive supports redundant power paths. The soft start cap disconnect feature reduces inrush current during startup, preventing voltage glitches that could disrupt data transmission. This makes it essential for high-availability networking equipment.
Recommended
Base Station Power Distribution
The TPS23521 is well-suited for base station power distribution units, where reliable hot swap is critical for maintaining uptime. Its dual gate drive allows control of two external MOSFETs, enabling high-current designs up to several hundred amps. The 200V absolute maximum rating provides margin for transient voltages in outdoor environments, ensuring long-term reliability. The device's wide temperature range (-40Β°C to +85Β°C) supports harsh operating conditions.
Recommended
Server Power Supplies
In server power supplies, the TPS23521 provides hot swap functionality for redundant power modules. Its dual current limit and gate drive enable precise control of inrush current, preventing system resets during module insertion. The device's high-voltage rating (200V) ensures robustness against power surges, while the compact 16-TSSOP package saves board space. This makes it ideal for high-density server environments.
Recommended
Industrial Power Systems
The TPS23521 is suitable for industrial power systems requiring hot swap capability in -48V or other negative voltage rails. Its wide input range and dual gate drive allow flexible design for various load requirements. The device's robust design, including 200V absolute maximum rating, ensures reliable operation in industrial environments with voltage transients. The soft start feature minimizes stress on capacitors and MOSFETs during power-up.
Recommended
Redundant Power Systems
The TPS23521 is designed for redundant power systems where multiple power supplies feed a common bus. Its dual gate drive allows independent control of two MOSFETs, enabling OR-ing of power sources with minimal loss. The dual current limit ensures each path is protected against overcurrent, while the 200V rating provides surge immunity. This makes it ideal for high-availability systems in telecom and data centers.

Design Notes
Ensure low-inductance paths for the high-current MOSFETs. Place the sense resistors close to the TPS23521 to minimize parasitic inductance, which can cause false triggering of the current limit. Use wide copper traces for the power path and keep the gate drive traces short to reduce ringing.
The TPS23521 itself dissipates minimal power, but the external MOSFETs may require heatsinking. Calculate power dissipation based on load current and RDS(on) of the MOSFETs. Provide adequate copper area or heatsinks to keep junction temperatures within safe limits, especially in high-current telecom applications.
Select the soft start capacitor value to limit inrush current to safe levels. Too small a capacitor may cause excessive inrush, while too large may slow startup. Refer to the datasheet for recommended values. Also, ensure the TIMER capacitor is set appropriately to avoid nuisance faults during transients.
