Key Differentiators
- Higher current rating than VNH7100A (vs VNH7100A)
- Lower ON-state resistance than VNH7100A (vs VNH7100A)
- AEC-Q100 qualified vs DRV8876 (vs DRV8876)
Design Notes
The PowerSSO-36 package has an exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a large copper area on the PCB. For 12A continuous operation, ensure at least 2 square inches of copper on the top and bottom layers, connected with thermal vias. The thermal resistance (theta_JA) is approximately 25 C/W with proper layout, allowing up to 5W dissipation without external heatsink.
Place 100nF ceramic capacitors close to the VS and VCC pins to decouple high-frequency noise. Use a 10uF electrolytic capacitor on the VS pin to handle current transients. The current sense output (CS) should be filtered with a 1kOhm resistor and 10nF capacitor to reduce switching noise. Keep the PWM and logic input traces short and away from high-current paths.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum supply voltage of 28V, as this can damage the device. Ensure the logic inputs are not left floating; use pull-down resistors to define a known state. The current sense output is only valid when the device is in normal operation; during fault conditions, it may be clamped. Always read the diagnostic output to distinguish between overcurrent, overtemperature, and undervoltage faults.
