ADS1110A3IDBVR Visão geral
A delta-sigma ADC is a converter architecture that uses oversampling and digital filtering to achieve high resolution and excellent noise rejection, especially at low bandwidths. The ADS1110 belongs to the precision ADC category within data converters, sitting in the hierarchy: delta-sigma ADC -> ADC -> data converter -> signal chain IC -> semiconductor. The architecture's inherent noise-shaping makes it well suited for low-frequency, high-accuracy measurements such as temperature, strain-gauge, and battery monitoring, where successive-approximation (SAR) ADCs often trade off noise for speed.
Key differentiating features include the integrated 2.048V reference with 5 ppm/°C typical drift, a programmable PGA with gains of 1, 2, 4, or 8, and a continuous self-calibration scheme that corrects internal offset and gain errors on every conversion. The device also integrates an internal oscillator, eliminating the need for an external clock, and offers four I2C slave addresses via the AD0 pin (only two of which are unique to the SOT-23-6 ADS1110A0/A1/A2/A3/A4/A5/A6/A7 family, depending on order code).
From a technical perspective, the converter uses a third-order modulator followed by a digital sinc³ filter, providing simultaneous 50 Hz and 60 Hz mains rejection at the 15 SPS data rate. The internal PGA lets full-scale ranges be programmed from ±2.048V down to ±0.256V, allowing direct interfacing with low-amplitude sensors such as thermocouples, bridge outputs, and shunt currents without external instrumentation amplifiers.
Typical applications include portable instrumentation, weigh scales, industrial process control, smart transmitters, consumer electronics, and factory automation. It is also frequently used in battery monitoring and fuel gauging thanks to its low supply current and differential input structure.
When designing with the ADS1110, pay attention to the I2C pull-up resistor selection and the input common-mode range. The device's inputs are true differential, but the absolute voltage on each input must remain between GND and VDD, which constrains how the part can be interfaced to bipolar sensors.

Aplicações típicas
ADS1110A3IDBVR é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Portable Weigh Scales, Industrial Process Control / 4-20 mA Loop Monitoring, Battery Monitoring and Fuel Gauging, Temperature Measurement with Thermocouples / RTDs, Strain-Gauge and Pressure-Sensor Signal Conditioning, Smart Transmitters and Sensor Transducers.
Portable Weigh Scales
The ADS1110A3IDBVR's 16-bit noise-free resolution and 50 Hz/60 Hz mains rejection at 15 SPS make it a strong fit for battery-powered weigh scales using 1 mV/V load cells. The integrated 2.048V reference and PGA (gains of 1, 2, 4, 8) allow direct bridge excitation readback without an external instrumentation amplifier, reducing BOM cost. Low supply current (microamp range at low data rates) supports coin-cell operation in bathroom and kitchen scales. The SOT-23-6 footprint fits even the thinnest handheld scales.
Recomendado
Industrial Process Control / 4-20 mA Loop Monitoring
The ADS1110A3IDBVR's differential input and ±2.048V full-scale range pair well with 4-20 mA current-loop receivers terminated at a 250 Ω sense resistor, producing 1-5V inputs that fit cleanly inside the converter's common-mode window. The integrated PGA allows lower-side measurement of 0-100 mV shunt drops for current sensing. The 15 SPS setting rejects 50 Hz/60 Hz industrial line noise, which is critical for PLC analog input modules. The SOT-23-6 package enables high-channel-density DIN-rail modules.
Recomendado
Battery Monitoring and Fuel Gauging
The ADS1110A3IDBVR's 2.7V to 5.5V single-supply operation and low quiescent current make it suitable for monitoring individual cell voltages in multi-cell battery packs. The differential input structure allows direct measurement across a current-sense shunt for coulomb counting, while the 16-bit resolution captures sub-mV variations in cell voltage during charge and discharge cycles. The integrated 2.048V reference eliminates external reference drift error, and the SOT-23-6 footprint supports compact BMS layouts in portable tools and e-mobility products.
Recomendado
Temperature Measurement with Thermocouples / RTDs
The ADS1110A3IDBVR's PGA gain of 8 produces a ±0.256V full-scale range ideal for amplifying low-level thermocouple (typ. 40 µV/°C for type K) and RTD bridge outputs. The 16-bit resolution combined with 5 ppm/°C reference drift delivers better than 0.5°C measurement accuracy after cold-junction compensation. Programmable data rates let designers trade off noise versus update rate, with 15 SPS preferred for slow-changing temperature signals. The SOT-23-6 package simplifies integration into handheld DMMs and process calibrators.
Recomendado
Strain-Gauge and Pressure-Sensor Signal Conditioning
The ADS1110A3IDBVR's differential input stage and 1, 2, 4, 8 PGA gains provide a complete one-chip front-end for resistive bridge strain gauges and MEMS pressure sensors. The integrated 2.048V reference can source up to a few mA for bridge excitation, eliminating the need for an external reference. The 16-bit resolution resolves microstrain variations in load cells and force-sensing resistors, and the SOT-23-6 footprint fits inside the tightest sensor housings. The I2C interface simplifies connection to microcontrollers in industrial IoT nodes.
Recomendado
Smart Transmitters and Sensor Transducers
The ADS1110A3IDBVR is widely used inside HART-compatible smart transmitters for digitizing the output of piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and capacitive sensors. Its low supply current (sub-mA at 15 SPS) supports loop-powered 4-20 mA transmitter designs where total current budget is tightly constrained. The differential input accepts the output of an AC-excited sensor demodulator, and the 16-bit resolution preserves dynamic range across decades of pressure or flow. The SOT-23-6 package enables miniaturized field-mount transmitter housings.

Notas de projeto
Place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 1) and a 10 µF bulk capacitor on the supply rail. The ADS1110's internal reference settles slowly after power-up; allow at least 25 ms (or one conversion cycle at 15 SPS) before reading the first conversion. When using the device in battery-powered applications, switch the ADC to power-down mode between conversions to reduce average supply current to single-digit microamps.
Do not exceed the absolute input voltage range on AIN+/AIN- (GND to VDD). The differential input is true differential, but the absolute voltage on each pin must remain within the supply rails. For bipolar sensors (±1 V common-mode), add a resistor-divider level shifter or an external instrumentation amplifier. Also, do not connect SDA or SCL directly to VDD without pull-up resistors: the I2C bus is open-drain and requires external pull-ups (typically 2.2 kΩ to 10 kΩ depending on bus speed and capacitance).
Route the analog inputs (AIN+/AIN-) as a differential pair with matched trace lengths and a ground guard trace to minimize common-mode noise pickup. Keep digital lines (SCL, SDA) at least 3 mm away from the analog input traces and cross them at 90° if they must overlap. Place a single ground pour under the ADC and stitch with vias around the perimeter to provide a low-impedance return path for the input bias currents. The SOT-23-6 thermal pad is not present on this part, so no thermal management is required.
