ADUM140D1BRZ-RL7 Visão geral

The Analog Devices ADUM140D1BRZ-RL7 is a quad-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices iCoupler technology, delivering 150 Mbps data rate, 3000 Vrms isolation, and 75 kV/us CMTI in a 16-pin SOIC wide-body package. The device combines high-speed CMOS with monolithic air-core transformer technology to provide four independent isolation channels in a unidirectional 4:0 (four transmit, zero receive) configuration.

A digital isolator is a semiconductor device that transmits digital signals across an isolation barrier using magnetic, capacitive, or optical coupling while blocking DC and low-frequency AC between the input and output sides. Digital isolators are categorized within the broader signal-isolation hierarchy as: digital isolator -> isolator -> interface IC -> integrated circuit. They are widely used in place of optocouplers to deliver higher speed, lower power, tighter channel-to-channel matching, and superior common-mode transient immunity, which is critical in industrial, medical, and renewable-energy systems that must withstand fast switching transients on the ground reference.

Key features include a maximum data rate of 150 Mbps, propagation delay of 13 ns typical, pulse-width distortion of 3 ns maximum, and channel-to-channel matching of 3 ns maximum. The device operates from a 1.8 V to 5 V supply on both sides, supports 3.0 V to 5.5 V level translation, and consumes 11 mA typical per channel at 5 V. Two fail-safe output options are available within the ADuM140D family: the default state-high and the state-low variants are selected by part suffix. The 16-SOIC wide-body package provides a minimum clearance and creepage distance suitable for reinforced insulation at 3000 Vrms working voltage per IEC 60747-17 (VDE 0884-17).

The iCoupler architecture uses chip-scale transformers rather than LEDs and photodiodes, eliminating the aging, CTR degradation, and slow response inherent to optocouplers. Each channel contains an encoder/decoder pair and a refresh circuit that maintains DC correctness at the output even in the absence of input transitions, preventing long-term settling errors.

Typical applications include isolated SPI/RS-485/RS-232 interfaces, gate driver isolation for IGBT and SiC power modules, isolated A/D and D/A converter data paths, and industrial fieldbus links such as Profibus and CAN. The wide 1.8 V to 5 V logic-side range allows direct connection to microcontrollers, FPGAs, and gate drivers without additional level shifters.

When designing with the ADUM140D1BRZ-RL7, observe the recommended decoupling and bypass scheme (0.1 uF plus 10 uF bulk per supply pin) and respect the maximum data rate versus load capacitance trade-off documented in the datasheet timing section. Select the appropriate fail-safe option for your system by suffix (1 = output high when input unpowered).

Four channels isolate one full-duplex bus plus power-good and fault lines. Placed at the field-side connector boundary, it grounds the field common-mode voltage before it reaches the controller.

⚡

Battery Management System (BMS) Communication

The ADUM140D1BRZ-RL7's 3000 Vrms isolation and four channels are well-matched to BMS applications in lithium-ion battery packs, where each cell-monitoring front-end must be isolated from the vehicle chassis. Four channels can carry cell-balance enable, fault, daisy-chain data, and a synchronous clock between stacked monitoring ICs, while 75 kV/us CMTI tolerates the dv/dt generated by high-current switching on the battery rails. The wide 1.8 V to 5 V supply simplifies integration with low-voltage monitoring ASICs. Placed at every cell module boundary, it provides the reinforced insulation required by IEC 60664-1 for traction batteries.

🖥️

Isolated USB / Ethernet PHY Interface

The ADUM140D1BRZ-RL7's 150 Mbps throughput supports low-speed USB (1.5 Mbps), full-speed USB (12 Mbps), and 10/100 Ethernet MII interfaces when an isolating USB or Ethernet transceiver is unavailable. Four channels can carry differential pair data plus differential pair clock signals with sub-3 ns matching. The 3000 Vrms withstand covers medical and industrial Ethernet isolation, while 1.8 V to 5 V logic supplies connect to PHY-side low-voltage rails. Placed between the PHY and the link-layer controller, it provides medical-grade patient isolation or factory-floor noise immunity.

Notas de projeto

Decouple each VDD1 (pin 1) and VDD2 (pin 15) pin with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 2 mm of the supply pin, plus a 10 uF bulk ceramic or low-ESR tantalum capacitor on each side. According to the Analog Devices datasheet, insufficient decoupling causes output oscillation or logic glitches during high dv/dt events. Use separate ground planes for GND1 (pins 2 and 8) and GND2 (pins 9 and 16) to maintain the isolation barrier integrity on the PCB.

Maintain at least 8 mm of clearance and creepage between side 1 (pins 1-8) and side 2 (pins 9-16) copper pours on the top and bottom layers to preserve the 3000 Vrms rating. According to the Analog Devices datasheet and IEC 60747-17, cutting the PCB beneath the device (no copper traces or pours under the body) is recommended to maximize the isolation barrier. Avoid placing any high-voltage copper near the NC pins (pins 7 and 10) which are reserved for creepage.

When running data rates near 150 Mbps, route each channel trace as a 50 ohm controlled-impedance microstrip or stripline, keep traces short, and place a 22 to 47 ohm series termination resistor close to the output pin to dampen reflections. According to the Analog Devices datasheet timing section, load capacitance above 15 pF on VOA-VOD reduces achievable data rate and increases pulse-width distortion. Use ground-referenced vias within 5 mm of each output pin to provide a low-inductance return path.

Do not tie the NC pins (7 and 10) to any signal or supply; they are reserved for creepage. According to the Analog Devices datasheet, the fail-safe option (suffix '0' vs '1') determines output behavior when input power is removed - select the part variant that matches your system's safe state. Operating above 5.5 V absolute maximum on either VDD pin permanently damages the device. Estimate: with VDD = 5.0 V and 11 mA per channel, total supply current for 4 channels is approximately 44 mA; ensure the upstream LDO can source this with adequate headroom.
