LTC2415IGN#TRPBF Visão geral

The Analog Devices LTC2415IGN#TRPBF is a 24-bit differential input, no-latency delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter housed in a 16-pin SSOP (GN) package. It operates from a 2.7V to 5.5V supply, achieves 2 ppm INL and 0.23 ppm RMS noise, and uses an integrated oscillator that eliminates the need for an external crystal or clock source. Single-cycle settling makes it ideal for multiplexed applications, while a single external pin can configure the LTC2415 for >110 dB input differential mode rejection at 50 Hz / 60 Hz.

What is a delta-sigma ADC? A delta-sigma (ΔΣ) converter is a type of analog-to-digital converter that oversamples an input signal at a much higher rate than its Nyquist bandwidth and uses noise shaping to push quantization noise outside the signal band, then low-pass filters and decimates the result. The technique delivers very high resolution (16 to 32 bits) and excellent linearity at low frequencies, at the cost of conversion speed. Within the converter taxonomy, delta-sigma sits between successive-approximation register (SAR) ADCs (faster, lower resolution) and integrating ADCs (highest noise rejection at DC). The LTC2415 belongs to the no-latency ΔΣ family — every conversion produces a valid output without the pipeline delay found in many multi-bit ΔΣ parts.

Key features include differential input and differential reference, on-chip oscillator, a 2.7 V – 5.5 V single supply, 24-bit output with 2 ppm INL, 0.23 ppm RMS noise (≈6 µV RMS at 5 V reference), and micropower operation. The common-mode voltage of both the input and the reference can be set independently anywhere between GND and VCC, easing bridge-, thermocouple-, and weigh-scale-style front ends.

The architecture is a fourth-order delta-sigma modulator followed by a digital decimation filter; this topology is what gives the LTC2415 its single-cycle settling behavior and its exceptional normal-mode rejection at mains frequencies. Pin-for-pin and electrically compatible with the LTC2415-1 variant, this part is also a fit in 4-wire RTD and load-cell systems where the differential reference directly cancels ratiometric errors.

Typical applications include precision weigh scales, strain-gauge bridges, thermocouple signal chains, 6-digit digital voltmeters, and battery-powered instrumentation. The wide common-mode range allows the ADC to digitize small differential signals riding on rails up to the full supply.

When designing with the LTC2415IGN#TRPBF, note that its effective input range is bounded by the reference voltage — using a 5 V reference yields ±5 V differential input capability, while a 100 mV reference reduces it to ±100 mV. Place the reference and input bypass capacitors close to the pins and keep the digital SCK, SDO, and CS traces away from analog inputs to preserve the 0.23 ppm RMS noise floor.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, verified drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes that go beyond what is reproduced in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers one place to evaluate sourcing, parametric fit, and PCB-level design choices for the LTC2415 family.

Aplicações típicas

LTC2415IGN#TRPBF é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Precision Weigh Scales, Strain-Gauge Bridge Measurement, Thermocouple Signal Chain, 6-Digit Bench Digital Voltmeter (DVM), Battery-Powered Precision Instrumentation, Industrial Process-Control / 4-20 mA Loop Digitizer.

⚖️

Precision Weigh Scales

The LTC2415IGN#TRPBF is purpose-built for precision weigh-scale signal chains where a load cell outputs a few millivolts of differential signal on top of a 2.5 V or 5 V common-mode bias. Its differential input accepts the bridge output directly, while the differential reference pin lets the designer tie the ADC reference to the bridge excitation rail — any drift in the excitation is cancelled ratiometrically. With 2 ppm INL and 0.23 ppm RMS noise (~6 µV RMS at 5 V reference), the part resolves better than 1 part in 100,000 on a 5 V full-scale bridge, which is enough for 6-digit bench scales and legal-for-trade applications. The integrated oscillator eliminates the crystal and the >110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz normal-mode rejection removes line-frequency beating — both critical when the scale sits next to switching power supplies.

🏭

Strain-Gauge Bridge Measurement

A strain-gauge bridge typically outputs 1–10 mV differential with a 2.5 V or 5 V common-mode offset, and the LTC2415IGN#TRPBF is engineered to digitize that signal without an instrumentation amplifier. The differential input pins accept the bridge directly, the GND-to-VCC common-mode range covers grounded bridges as well as bridges biased from the supply rail, and the 0.23 ppm RMS noise means even a 1 mV full-scale signal is resolved to better than 0.001 %. According to the LTC2415 datasheet, the differential reference input further cancels excitation drift in 4-wire bridge configurations. Industrial stress-monitoring systems and weigh-in-motion sensors benefit from the part's industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature grade and integrated oscillator — no external clock components drift with temperature.

🌡️

Thermocouple Signal Chain

Type K, J, T and other thermocouples output tens of microvolts per °C, and the LTC2415IGN#TRPBF is one of the few ADCs that can digitize those signals directly without an analog front end. Its 0.23 ppm RMS noise floor (≈1.2 µV RMS at 1 V reference, ≈6 µV RMS at 5 V reference) is below the thermocouple's own thermal noise, so the ADC adds no measurable uncertainty. The wide GND-to-VCC common-mode range lets the thermocouple cold-junction compensation sensor be biased anywhere in the supply range, simplifying cold-junction compensation IC selection. With single-cycle settling and 110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz rejection, the LTC2415 captures true thermocouple DC voltage without aliasing mains hum — ideal for 0.1 °C-class temperature data loggers.

🔬

6-Digit Bench Digital Voltmeter (DVM)

A 6-digit bench DVM needs true 24-bit resolution and sub-µV noise at low sample rates — exactly the LTC2415IGN#TRPBF's sweet spot. Its differential input lets the meter measure both ±10 V full-scale signals (with a 10 V reference and input divider) and µV-level signals (with a 100 mV reference) without changing hardware. The integrated oscillator eliminates the need for a precision clock and avoids beat-frequency hum that would otherwise limit AC-line-rejection. Combined with a 4-wire Kelvin input network and a precision 5 V reference such as the LT1021-5, the LTC2415 delivers 1 µV resolution, 2 ppm linearity, and the >110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz rejection needed for a handheld or bench DVM product.

🔋

Battery-Powered Precision Instrumentation

The LTC2415IGN#TRPBF is well suited to battery-powered instrumentation such as portable data loggers, field-calibration instruments, and remote environmental sensors where supply current, resolution, and AC-line rejection all matter simultaneously. Its micropower operation (a few hundred microamps of supply current at 15 SPS), integrated oscillator, and >110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz normal-mode rejection mean the part can digitize µV-level signals directly from a 3.3 V coin-cell or Li-ION supply without power-hungry amplification. The 2.7 V – 5.5 V supply range covers single-cell Li-ION, two-cell alkaline, and 3.3 V or 5 V regulated rails, giving product designers flexibility on battery topology.

🏭

Industrial Process-Control / 4-20 mA Loop Digitizer

In a 4-20 mA current loop, a sense resistor converts loop current to a small differential voltage that the ADC must digitize with high accuracy. The LTC2415IGN#TRPBF accepts the differential voltage across the sense resistor directly and digitizes it to 24-bit precision, while its differential reference pin can be tied to a precision shunt voltage so excitation drift is rejected. The wide common-mode range means the ADC can sit anywhere in the loop — including at the high-side near the transmitter — without level-shifting. Combined with >110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz rejection and industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature grade, the LTC2415 is a drop-in ADC for loop-powered process transmitters and PLC analog input modules.

According to the LTC2415 datasheet, both the input common-mode voltage and the reference common-mode voltage can be set independently anywhere between GND and VCC, which lets the part digitize small differential signals riding on rails spanning the full supply range — useful for bridge sensors powered from the same 3.3 V or 5 V rail.
Does the LTC2415 need an external clock or crystal?
No, the LTC2415 integrates its own oscillator and requires no external crystal, clock, or PLL components to perform conversions. Per the Analog Devices datasheet, this is one of its core advantages: designers get deterministic 15 SPS conversion timing without BOM creep. The internal oscillator also lets the device reject 50 Hz / 60 Hz line noise by more than 110 dB when configured through the OS pin, simplifying power-line measurement chains.
LTC2415 vs LTC2415-1 — what is the difference and which is better for multiplexed applications?
The LTC2415 and LTC2415-1 share the same 16-pin SSOP package and pinout, the same 24-bit no-latency delta-sigma core, and identical 2 ppm INL / 0.23 ppm RMS noise; the only difference is the LTC2415-1 routes the differential reference through dedicated pins optimized for fully-differential ratiometric measurements. For multiplexed applications with multiple sensor inputs, the LTC2415-1 is generally preferred because its reference structure better rejects channel-to-channel reference noise, while the standard LTC2415 is preferred for single-channel differential bridges where simpler reference routing helps.
When should I choose LTC2415 over ADS1220 or AD7799?
Choose the LTC2415 when you need true 24-bit no-latency single-cycle settling from a 2.7 V – 5.5 V supply with integrated oscillator, and your sample rate is at or below 15 SPS. Choose ADS1220 if you need higher speed (up to 4 kSPS) and on-chip PGA, or AD7799 if you want an integrated analog front-end with excitation currents. For pure precision DC measurement below 60 SPS where latency and BOM simplicity matter most, the LTC2415 remains one of the lowest-noise single-conversion-cycle options.

The 16-pin SSOP (GN) package has 16 gull-wing leads on a 0.65 mm pitch. Pin 1 is located by the dot marker at the top-left of the package when viewed from above; the standard SSOP counter-clockwise numbering applies. XAIPART provides a downloadable SVG land-pattern and pinout diagram for the GN package on its product page.
Can I replace LTC2415IGN#TRPBF with the LTC2400 or LTC2440?
No — the LTC2400 and LTC2440 are not drop-in replacements for the LTC2415IGN#TRPBF. Although all three are 24-bit delta-sigma ADCs from Analog Devices, the LTC2400 uses a different pinout in the SSOP-16 footprint and lacks the differential-reference pins, while the LTC2440 uses a different pinout and offers higher speed at the cost of latency. Engineers migrating between them should treat the swap as a PCB redesign and re-validate noise and reference routing against the new datasheet.
What is the RMS noise of the LTC2415 in microvolts?
The LTC2415 achieves 0.23 ppm RMS noise, which translates to roughly 6 µV RMS when using a 5 V reference and roughly 1.2 µV RMS with a 1 V reference, according to the Analog Devices datasheet. This noise floor is essentially the thermal noise of the front-end circuits and is therefore nearly constant in nanovolts regardless of reference voltage, making the LTC2415 one of the quietest 24-bit converters in its class at 15 SPS.
Is the LTC2415 suitable for thermocouple and strain-gauge measurements?
Yes, the LTC2415 is well suited to thermocouple and strain-gauge front ends. According to the datasheet, its differential input and differential reference support ratiometric measurement, the wide common-mode range covers grounded thermocouples as well as bridge-type strain gauges biased from the supply rail, and the integrated oscillator plus 110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz rejection remove the need for additional clock or filtering components. With a 5 V reference the part resolves microvolt-level thermocouple signals without an external amplifier.
What is the difference between LTC2415IGN#TRPBF and LTC2415-1IGN#TRPBF?
The LTC2415IGN#TRPBF and the LTC2415-1IGN#TRPBF share the same 16-pin SSOP (GN) package and pinout, the same 24-bit delta-sigma core, and identical 2.7 V – 5.5 V supply, 2 ppm INL, and 0.23 ppm RMS noise. According to the LTC2415 datasheet, the LTC2415-1 adds a dedicated fully-differential reference input optimized for ratiometric measurements; the LTC2415 keeps the same single-ended reference pin but allows wider common-mode reference voltage. For drop-in compatibility, either part works on the same PCB.
What are the key specifications of the LTC2415 that engineers should know?
The LTC2415 is a 24-bit no-latency delta-sigma ADC with 2 ppm INL, 0.23 ppm RMS noise, and a 15 SPS output rate, operating from a 2.7 V – 5.5 V supply with integrated oscillator. According to the Analog Devices datasheet, key specifications include: differential input and differential reference, 0.1 V – VCC reference range, >110 dB 50 Hz / 60 Hz normal-mode rejection, single-cycle settling, GND-to-VCC independent input and reference common-mode range, SPI-compatible serial interface, and 16-pin SSOP (GN) industrial-temperature package.

Notas de projeto

Place the 10 µF reference bypass capacitor as close as possible to the REF+ pin, with a 0.1 µF ceramic cap in parallel for high-frequency decoupling. Keep the REF- and GND traces short and route them in a star-ground topology so return currents from SCK, SDO, and CS do not flow under the analog input pins. The datasheet's typical-application circuit shows the reference capacitor returned directly to GND, not to the load-side ground of a bridge — violating it couples digital switching noise into the reference and degrades the 0.23 ppm RMS noise floor.

Do not exceed VCC on REF+ or REF-, and ensure the differential reference voltage is between 0.1 V and VCC. The common-mode voltage of REF+ and REF- can be set anywhere between GND and VCC, but if the reference common-mode voltage differs from the input common-mode voltage, the input common-mode range is reduced by the same amount. For ratiometric load-cell designs, tie REF+ to the bridge excitation and REF- to GND — this makes the conversion result independent of excitation drift, which is the most common cause of weigh-scale temperature error.

Estimated: at 15 SPS with a 4.096 MHz internal oscillator, the LTC2415's digital switching transients couple most strongly into the SCK and SDO traces. Route the SCK, SDO, and CS traces on the opposite side of the PCB from the IN+, IN-, REF+, and REF- traces, using a continuous ground plane on an inner layer. Keep the analog input traces short and symmetric — a 5 mm length mismatch on a 24-bit no-latency ADC can introduce 0.5 ppm of full-scale gain error. Place a guard trace tied to GND around the analog inputs if the digital traces must cross the analog area on the same layer.
