PIC16LF15376-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF15376-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ 16F microcontroller featuring 28 KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory, 2 KB of RAM, and a 32 MHz internal CPU speed, housed in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) package with exposed thermal pad. It targets the LF (low-voltage, low-power) node with operating voltages down to 1.8 V while integrating Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) including 4x PWMs, a comparator, a 5-bit DAC, an ADC, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), 4x Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), 2x EUSART, and SPI/I²C communication blocks.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a CPU with an 8-bit data path, on-chip Flash program memory, RAM, and integrated peripherals — typically chosen over 32-bit Cortex-M parts when BOM cost, deterministic behavior, and ultra-low standby power matter more than raw compute throughput. Within that hierarchy, PIC16F parts sit above PIC10/12/14 in flash and peripheral count, and below PIC18/PIC24 dsPIC in performance and address space. The XLP™ family adds sleep currents down to the nanoampere range, making it a common choice for battery and energy-harvesting endpoints.

The PIC16LF15376's key features include 28 KB self-programmable Flash with device ID/DualCAN/ND/ICSP™ support, 2 KB SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM. Its eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology delivers typical idle current figures suitable for multi-year coin-cell deployments, and the peripheral set enables sensor conditioning, motor signaling, and bridge driving without external logic. The 44-QFN package provides up to 36 configurable I/O pins, supporting mixed analog and digital interfaces in compact PCB layouts.

The architecture uses a 14-bit instruction word with a 32 MHz internal oscillator and a 2-level hardware stack, giving deterministic interrupt latency that is well suited to CIP-driven timing chains. The CIPs operate as client logic in parallel to the core, so the CPU can sleep while the CLC, CWG, and PWM blocks handle signal generation autonomously, extending battery life considerably.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered remote controls, LED lighting controllers, HVAC fan/thermostat controls, and small appliance user interfaces. The wide operating range and rich peripheral mix also make it useful in industrial sensor hubs and consumer wearables where quiescent current is critical.

When designing with this device, choose decoupling capacitors per the datasheet's recommended layout and route the exposed pad to a contiguous ground copper pour for thermal relief and ground integrity. Verify that the LF voltage range (1.8 V minimum) matches your battery chemistry to avoid code-execution brownouts during deep discharge.

Aplicações típicas

PIC16LF15376-I/ML é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes, Consumer Remote Controls and Wireless HIDs, LED Lighting Controllers and Drivers, HVAC Fan and Thermostat Controls, Small Appliance User Interfaces, Industrial Sensor Hubs and Edge Nodes.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC16LF15376-I/ML is purpose-built for battery-powered IoT sensor endpoints due to its XLP technology with nanoamp-range sleep currents and 1.8 V minimum supply compatible with 2xAA alkaline, single CR2032 coin cells, or energy-harvesting sources. The 4x CLC (Configurable Logic Cells) operate independently of the CPU, allowing continuous sensor-edge event detection (motion, threshold crossings, pulse counting) while the core stays in deep sleep, extending battery life to 5-10 years on a single coin cell. The 28 KB Flash comfortably hosts LoRaWAN/Sigfox MAC stacks, BLE beacon profiles, or Modbus-over-RS485 sensor firmware with OTA update headroom. Compared with 32-bit Cortex-M0+ parts, this PIC16LF15376 offers lower BOM cost, deterministic interrupt latency, and decades-proven MPLAB X IDE toolchain support.

📱

Consumer Remote Controls and Wireless HIDs

The PIC16LF15376-I/ML excels in IR/RF remote controls and wireless human-interface devices because its CWG (Complementary Waveform Generator) and 4x PWM blocks generate precise carrier frequencies (36-40 kHz IR, 315/433/868 MHz sub-carriers) without CPU intervention. The XLP sleep current keeps a coin-cell-powered remote in standby for years while the CLC monitors a wake-up GPIO, then the CPU wakes only when a key is pressed. With 2 KB RAM the device handles debounced matrix keypad scanning, multi-protocol pairing state machines, and infrared protocol stacks (NEC, RC5, Sony SIRC). Compared with discrete IR encoder ICs, integrating the MCU eliminates an external component and gives full flexibility to support multiple protocols in the same hardware revision.

💡

LED Lighting Controllers and Drivers

The PIC16LF15376-I/ML is well-suited to smart LED lighting controllers, including constant-current buck/boost drivers, RGBW color-mixing fixtures, and DMX-512 dimmer packs, thanks to its 4x PWM channels with 10-bit resolution and the CWG that can synthesize dead-time-controlled half-bridge drive signals without external logic. The 10-bit ADC reads ambient light sensors and potentiometer dimmers, while the 5-bit DAC generates 0-10 V analog dimming outputs to commercial LED drivers. With 36 I/O pins the MCU can drive multiple LED strings, scan capacitive touch keypads, and interface to DALI, 0-10 V, or Zigbee/BLE wireless control modules. The 1.8 V minimum lets the controller ride out LED-driver brownouts during PWM transitions.

🏭

HVAC Fan and Thermostat Controls

In HVAC fan controllers and electronic thermostats, the PIC16LF15376-I/ML provides the ADC channels needed for NTC thermistor temperature sensing, the PWM outputs for triac-fired or BLDC fan speed control, and the CLC for zero-cross detection that synchronizes AC line switching. The 5-bit DAC can output a 0-10 V or 4-20 mA control signal to variable-frequency drives or damper actuators, and the 2 EUSARTs allow simultaneous connection to a local display/keypad board and a Modbus or BACnet building-automation network. XLP sleep modes keep the standby power well under 100 mW, helping products meet Energy Star and Ecodesign 2019/2021 standby targets.

🔧

Small Appliance User Interfaces

The PIC16LF15376-I/ML drives user-interface boards in small kitchen and household appliances — coffee machines, washing machines, induction cooktops, and air purifiers — where its 28 KB Flash holds state machines for sensor-fusion control loops, its 4x CLC debounces mechanical keypads in hardware, and its 4x PWM outputs switch solenoid valves, triac-driven heaters, or buzzer tones. The 10-bit ADC reads multiple analog sensors (NTC, water-level, pressure) and the 5-bit DAC generates reference voltages for sensor-bridge excitation. Compared with discrete logic ICs, this single-chip approach reduces BOM by 30-50% and gives designers one toolchain and one debug probe for the entire appliance.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hubs and Edge Nodes

The PIC16LF15376-I/ML is an effective edge node in industrial sensor hubs, aggregating data from 4-20 mA loop-powered sensors, RTDs, and digital IO over Modbus RTU or IO-Link to a gateway or PLC. The 10-bit ADC handles up to 14 analog inputs, the 2 EUSARTs allow simultaneous RS-485 sensor bus and diagnostic UART, and the SPI peripheral interfaces to external FRAM for event logging without CPU intervention. The -40C to +85C industrial operating range and 44-QFN's small footprint suit sealed IP67 enclosures on factory floors. XLP sleep modes make the device suitable for solar-powered remote telemetry units where energy budget is the key design constraint.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: at 32 MHz active current ~3 mA plus peripheral contributions, the LF variant typically draws ~3.5 mA active from a 3.3 V supply. XLP sleep current drops to the nanoampere range (per Microchip datasheet DS40001833), enabling coin-cell life measured in years. Decouple VDD/AVDD with 100 nF ceramic as close to the pins as possible, and add a bulk 10 uF tantalum if the supply impedance at LF sleep currents cannot hold the rail during wake-up transients. Brown-out detection must be enabled to prevent Flash corruption during battery end-of-life.

The 44-QFN (8x8 mm) package has a center exposed thermal pad (pin 44) that must be soldered to a contiguous ground copper pour with at least 4 thermal vias to the inner ground plane. Failure to solder the EP pad correctly causes the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance to rise dramatically, leading to thermal shutdown at high ambient temperatures and unreliable ICSP programming. Keep analog traces (RA/RE pins) short and away from PWM-switching signals to avoid ADC cross-talk, especially in dimmer and sensor-hub applications.

Estimated: do not use the LF variant on rails that may dip below 1.8 V during deep-discharge — code execution will fail and Watchdog Timer may not reset the part if WDT is disabled. Always use the PIC16F15376 (2.3 V minimum) for designs that source from lithium primaries or 3xAA stacks with discharge below 2.0 V. Also avoid configuring CLC outputs that conflict with PPS-remapped peripherals without reviewing the PPS table in the datasheet — incorrect PPS settings can cause debug-tool communication failures and brick the device during prototyping.
