PIC16LF1718T-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1718T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC16F1718 family featuring 32 MHz operation, 28 KB (16K x 14) of Flash program memory, 2 KB of RAM, and a 10-bit ADC, housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package. Designed around Microchip's enhanced mid-range core with XLP (eXtreme Low Power) technology, it integrates intelligent analog peripherals including operational amplifiers, 5/8-bit DACs, comparators, and Core Independent Peripherals (CLC, COG, NCO, ZCD) on-chip.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash/RAM), and programmable I/O peripherals. The 8-bit PIC architecture sits within the broader hierarchy of: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor. The 'LF' prefix denotes the F-version silicon (lower-power variant) qualified for operation down to 1.8V, while the 'T' suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging, and 'I' denotes the industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C). The 'ML' package code maps to Microchip's 28-lead QFN (Quad Flat No-lead) package with an exposed thermal pad.

Key features include 4 PWM channels, 1 capture/compare, 1 USART, 1 SPI, 1 I2C, 17 I/O pins, 1 op-amp, 2 comparators with rail-to-rail inputs, 4 10-bit ADC channels plus a 17-channel shared ADC, and Peripheral Pin Select (PPS) for flexible signal routing. PPS is a unique Microchip feature that allows remapping of digital peripheral pins at runtime without rewiring the PCB.

The 'LF' silicon variant supports a wide 1.8V-3.6V VDD range, while the standard 'F' variant supports 2.3V-5.5V. The XLP technology achieves nanoWatt sleep currents, making this MCU well-suited for battery-powered or energy-harvesting applications. The integrated op-amp and 10-bit DAC eliminate external analog components in many sensor signal chains.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, low-power wireless sensor transmitters, battery-powered medical devices, LED lighting controllers, and general-purpose embedded control where analog integration reduces BOM. PPS makes it well-suited for designs where pin assignments change late in the design cycle.

When designing with this MCU, ensure the supply decoupling follows Microchip's recommended 100 nF + bulk capacitor topology, and verify that the LF voltage variant matches your system rail. The QFN package requires careful PCB thermal pad soldering for reliable operation.

Notas de projeto

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 26) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU. For XLP sleep operation, use the internal voltage regulator's low-power mode and disable unused peripherals via PMD registers to achieve nanoWatt sleep currents. Estimated: at 1.8V VDD with full RAM retention, sleep current is typically <50 nA per Microchip XLP datasheets. Avoid floating digital inputs to prevent shoot-through current during sleep.

The 28-QFN (6x6 mm) package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) on pin 28 that MUST be soldered to a ground plane on the PCB. EP provides both the primary thermal path and the lowest-inductance ground reference. Estimated: with theta_JA around 30-35 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board, the device can dissipate roughly 1W at 85C ambient before thermal shutdown. For industrial applications near the +85C limit, provide at least 100 mm^2 of 1 oz copper pour under the EP.

Route the ICSP pins (ICSPCLK on RA5, ICSPDAT on RA6) to test pads or a 6-pin header for in-circuit programming and debugging. PPS allows digital peripheral remapping but does NOT remap analog inputs, the op-amp pins, or the ICSP functions. Keep analog traces short and guarded by ground to minimize ADC noise pickup; the on-chip ADC achieves best performance with a 100 ohm source impedance or less and an adequate acquisition time in software.

Do not confuse the LF (low-voltage, 1.8V-3.6V) and F (standard, 2.3V-5.5V) variants - mixing them at 5V will damage the LF version. The 'T' suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging only - the silicon is identical to the non-T variant. PPS remapping requires unlocking the IOLOCK register sequence; attempt this only after firmware is debugged. The MV package code (UQFN) may have different pin assignments than the ML (QFN) code - always verify pinout against the specific datasheet before board respins.

When using the on-chip op-amp for sensor signal conditioning, route the OPA1IN+/-, OPA1OUT, and feedback network tracks close together to minimize noise pickup. Use a guard ring around high-impedance analog input nodes tied to a quiet analog ground. Estimated: the 10-bit ADC requires the input to settle within 1/2 LSB before sampling - at the maximum ADC clock (e.g., 32 MHz with Fosc/32), the acquisition time must be at least 2 us for a 5 kohm source. Refer to Microchip AN2818 for detailed ADC design guidance.
