PIC16LF19176-E/P Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF19176-E/P is an 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller featuring 28KB of FLASH program memory, 2KB of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 40-pin PDIP through-hole package. It operates at up to 32MHz clock speed and supports a wide voltage range of 1.8V to 3.6V, with eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology for battery-powered applications. The integrated LCD driver with charge pump enables direct glass drive without external boost circuitry, while Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as CWG, SMT, ZCD, and PPS reduce CPU overhead and BOM cost.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a compact programmable processor that integrates CPU, memory, and peripherals on a single silicon die. The PIC16 family sits within Microchip's 8-bit PIC microcontroller hierarchy, which is part of the broader category of microcontrollers (MCUs) and embedded controllers. PIC MCUs use a modified Harvard RISC architecture with separate program and data buses, allowing single-cycle instruction execution. The 'LF' prefix indicates a low-voltage (1.8V minimum VDD) variant optimized for battery-powered and energy-harvesting designs, distinguishing it from standard 'F' variants that typically require 2.0V or higher.

Key features include a 12-bit ADC with computation (ADC2), a 5-bit DAC, a low-power comparator, PWM/CCP/CWG waveform generation, signal measurement timer (SMT), zero-crossing detect (ZCD), peripheral pin select (PPS), and a hardware RTCC with calendar mode. The device also offers windowed watchdog timer (WWDT), peripheral module disable (PMD), and hardware limit timer (HLT) for safety-critical applications. With 36 to 50 I/O pins available in the 40-pin PDIP form factor, designers can interface multiple sensors, displays, and communication peripherals simultaneously.

The architecture combines a 14-bit instruction word PIC16 CPU with a vectored interrupt controller and hardware multiplier, achieving 32MHz operation at less than 1.2mA active current and sub-uA sleep currents via nanoWatt XLP technology. The integrated LCD charge pump supports bias generation up to 5V VLCD from a single 1.8V to 3.6V supply, eliminating the need for external boost components in low-power LCD designs.

Typical applications include battery-powered glucose meters and thermostats, electronic shelf labels, smart remote controls, and any portable LCD-based product requiring long battery life. The combination of low power, integrated LCD drive, and CIPs makes the PIC16LF19176 family a strong fit for cost-sensitive consumer medical and IoT products. Designers should budget PCB area for the 40-pin PDIP footprint (600 mil body width) and verify the VLCD charge pump output current capability against their LCD segment count and refresh rate requirements.

Estimated: with a 3.0 V CR2032 coin cell and 1 uA average draw (mostly sleep with RTCC), the PIC16LF19176-E/P can achieve roughly 220 mAh / 1 uA = ~25 years of theoretical battery life on a single cell. In practice, LCD refresh bursts and radio duty cycle limit life to 5-10 years. Use the XLP sleep mode with RTCC running, disable unused peripherals via PMD, and gate I/O pins low before entering sleep. Decouple VDD with 100 nF + 10 uF ceramic placed within 5 mm of pins 11/12 and 31/32.

Place decoupling capacitors as close as possible to VDD/VSS pairs. The 40-pin PDIP requires two VDD pins (11 and 32) and two VSS pins (12 and 31), each needing its own 100 nF bypass capacitor. Add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU. For ICD (In-Circuit Debugger) connections, leave RB6/RB7 accessible and reserve RB3/RB4 for PGC/PGD if you also use ICSP. Trace impedance is non-critical below 10 MHz; for SPI buses above 10 MHz, use short traces and series damping resistors.

Avoid enabling both ADC2 and the LCD charge pump simultaneously on the same I/O pins - check the pin multiplexing matrix in section 4 of the datasheet. The 'LF' suffix is required for operation below 2.3 V; do not substitute 'F' variants in 1.8 V designs. When migrating firmware from PIC16LF18876 to PIC16LF19176, verify the ADC configuration registers because the 12-bit ADC2 has different setup bit fields than the older 10-bit ADC used in PIC16LF188xx.
