PIC17C762-16/PT Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC17C762-16/PT is a high-performance 8-bit CMOS EPROM-based microcontroller in a 80-pin TQFP (PT) surface-mount package, delivering 8.25 MIPS at a 33 MHz oscillator input (121 ns instruction cycle) and 16 KB of on-chip OTP program memory. It integrates 678 bytes of general-purpose RAM, 66 digital I/O lines, a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, an 8-bit single-cycle hardware multiplier, and the PIC17C family peripheral set including multiple timers, USART, and capture/compare/PWM modules.

An OTP microcontroller (One-Time-Programmable microcontroller) is a non-volatile program-memory MCU whose EPROM cells can be written exactly once during production programming, then retain their bit pattern for the lifetime of the part. OTP sits in the microcontroller taxonomy between mask-ROM MCUs (cheapest, programmed at the fab) and flash MCUs (rewritable for field upgrades); OTP MCUs are favored for high-volume mature products where firmware is stable and production tooling costs favor factory programming. Within Microchip's lineup, PIC17C762 belongs to the PIC17C family of 8-bit RISC microcontrollers, which in turn sits above PIC16C and below PIC18 in performance and peripheral count.

Key features of the PIC17C762-16/PT include its high-performance Harvard RISC architecture with only 58 single-word instructions, single-cycle instruction execution (except program branches and table reads/writes which are two-cycle), a wide 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply range, an external clock input up to 33 MHz, and built-in brown-out / power-on reset and watchdog timer. The internal 10-bit A/D converter supports multiple channels for mixed-signal embedded designs. Industrial-grade operation is supported through the -40C to +85C commercial/industrial range (per the PT suffix family). The 80-pin TQFP package exposes 66 I/O pins, leaving 14 pins for power, ground, oscillator, MCLR, and programming functions.

Architecturally, the PIC17C762 separates program memory (16 KB OTP EPROM) from data memory (678 bytes RAM + 16-level hardware stack), allowing the 16-bit instruction word to coexist with an 8-bit data path. The single-cycle hardware multiplier accelerates arithmetic operations common in motor control and instrumentation, while the peripheral set supports both event-driven (timer/capture) and communications (USART) workloads.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, motor drive controllers, instrumentation front-ends, sensor conditioning with on-chip A/D, low-cost data acquisition terminals, and any high-volume embedded design that benefits from one-time factory programming of stable firmware. Compared with newer flash-based PIC18F8520, the PIC17C762-16/PT targets production runs where firmware stability eliminates the need for field re-programmability.

When designing with this part, note that OTP memory cannot be erased or rewritten; firmware bugs are unrecoverable in the field. Ensure a stable, well-regulated 5 V supply and follow Microchip's PIC17C programming specifications for in-circuit or socket programming using the ICSP interface. A newer recommended device per Microchip is the PIC18F8520, which adds flash memory and improved peripherals while remaining software-compatible at the architectural level.

What type of program memory does PIC17C762-16/PT use?
The PIC17C762-16/PT uses 16 KB of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) EPROM as its program memory. OTP memory can be written exactly once during production via ICSP or socket programming, after which the bit pattern is permanent and cannot be erased or rewritten in the field. This makes OTP MCUs ideal for high-volume mature products where firmware is stable, but unsuitable for designs requiring field firmware updates.
How much RAM and I/O does PIC17C762-16/PT have?
The PIC17C762-16/PT provides 678 bytes of general-purpose data RAM and 66 digital I/O pins on its 80-pin TQFP package. The remaining 14 pins are dedicated to power (VDD/VSS), MCLR reset, oscillator (OSC1/OSC2), and ICSP programming interfaces. The high I/O count enables direct connection to keypads, LED arrays, LCD modules, and parallel sensor buses without external I/O expanders.
What is the maximum clock speed and performance of PIC17C762-16/PT?
The PIC17C762-16/PT accepts an external clock up to 33 MHz, yielding a 121 ns instruction cycle and 8.25 MIPS throughput. Most instructions execute in a single cycle, except program branches and table reads/writes which take two cycles. The Harvard architecture allows simultaneous instruction fetch and data access, providing efficient deterministic execution for real-time control loops.
Does PIC17C762-16/PT include an A/D converter?
Yes, the PIC17C762-16/PT integrates a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter with multiple input channels multiplexed onto the device's I/O pins. This on-chip ADC enables direct interface with analog sensors (temperature, pressure, light, voltage) without external ADC chips, reducing BOM cost and PCB area in mixed-signal embedded designs such as instrumentation and data acquisition terminals.
What supply voltage does PIC17C762-16/PT require?
The PIC17C762-16/PT operates from a single 4.5 V to 5.5 V DC supply, with 5.0 V being the nominal design point. A stable regulated supply is required because OTP programming voltage generation depends on a clean VDD rail. Designers should include decoupling capacitors (typically 100 nF plus 10 uF bulk) close to the VDD/VSS pins and follow Microchip's PIC17C hardware design guidelines.
What is the operating temperature range of PIC17C762-16/PT?
The PIC17C762-16/PT (commercial grade, suffix /PT without I or E) operates over 0C to +70C. For industrial temperature applications requiring -40C to +85C, use the PIC17C762-16I/PT variant. For extended -40C to +125C operation, the PIC17C762-16E/PT variant is specified. All three variants share the same 80-pin TQFP package and pinout.
Where to buy PIC17C762-16/PT and what is the price?
The PIC17C762-16/PT is available from authorized Microchip distributors including DigiKey and Mouser, though stock is limited because the part is mature and Microchip recommends PIC18F8520 for new designs. As of 2026-09-26, pricing is approximately $14.50 per unit at qty 1, dropping to about $9.25 per unit at qty 1000. Verify current stock via distributor websites before placing orders.
What is the lead time and stock status for PIC17C762-16/PT?
The PIC17C762-16/PT is classified as obsolete/mature by Microchip and is being phased out in favor of the PIC18F8520. Stock at major distributors (DigiKey, Mouser) varies; some lots remain but allocation is not guaranteed. For new production designs, Microchip strongly recommends the flash-based PIC18F8520 as the migration path. Legacy designs should qualify a second source or migrate to the recommended replacement.
PIC17C762-16/PT vs PIC18F8520 - which should I choose?
Choose PIC17C762-16/PT only for legacy designs requiring exact backward compatibility with the PIC17C OTP architecture. For new designs, the Microchip-recommended PIC18F8520 offers flash memory (rewritable in the field), more RAM, more peripherals, higher performance, and active lifecycle status. The closest drop-in replacement for PIC17C762-16/PT is the PIC17C762-16I/PT (industrial temperature variant in the same TQFP-80 package) and PIC17C762-16E/PT (extended temperature variant), all sharing the same die and pinout. For new designs, Microchip's official migration recommendation is the PIC18F8520, but it is not pin-compatible - PCB redesign is required. Within the PIC17C family, the variants listed share the same TQFP-80 footprint.
Can PIC17C756A-16I/PT replace PIC17C762-16/PT as a Microchip equivalent?
No, the PIC17C756A-16I/PT cannot drop-in replace the PIC17C762-16/PT because the PIC17C756A has only 16 KB of program memory versus the PIC17C762's 16 KB but different peripheral mix, and the pinout differs (PIC17C756A is in 64-pin TQFP/DIP while PIC17C762 is 80-pin TQFP). For true drop-in alternatives within the same 80-pin TQFP package, only PIC17C762-16I/PT and PIC17C762-16E/PT are direct substitutes.
What is the pin count and package of PIC17C762-16/PT?
The PIC17C762-16/PT comes in an 80-pin TQFP (Thin Quad Flat Pack) package, also designated by Microchip suffix /PT, measuring approximately 12 mm x 12 mm with 0.5 mm pitch and gull-wing leads suitable for surface-mount assembly. Notas de projeto

PIC17C762-16/PT uses OTP (One-Time-Programmable) EPROM, not flash memory. Once programmed, the firmware CANNOT be erased or rewritten in the field. This means any firmware bug discovered after production is unrecoverable in-circuit and the part must be replaced. Designers must fully validate firmware on engineering samples before committing to production programming. For new designs requiring field upgradability, use the Microchip-recommended PIC18F8520 (flash-based) instead.

PIC17C762-16/PT requires a regulated 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply with adequate decoupling. Place 100 nF ceramic capacitors close to each VDD/VSS pin pair, plus a 10 uF bulk tantalum or aluminum capacitor at the device supply pin. The AVDD/AVSS analog supply pins should be filtered separately from VDD/VSS to keep ADC readings clean - typical practice is a ferrite bead between digital and analog supplies plus a 100 nF + 10 uF filter capacitor at AVDD. In-circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) requires the VPP pin to be driven to ~13V during programming.

Route the 33 MHz oscillator (or external clock) traces on the top layer with short, direct paths to OSC1/OSC2 and guard them with a ground pour on both sides. Keep high-speed switching signals (CCP PWM outputs, USART lines) away from analog ADC inputs to minimize digital-to-analog crosstalk. The TQFP-80 package has a center thermal pad that should be soldered to a ground plane for mechanical strength and thermal dissipation. Place a 4-layer PCB with dedicated VDD and GND planes for production designs.

The /PT suffix specifically denotes commercial temperature grade (0C to +70C). For industrial applications, use /I/PT or /E/PT suffixes. Always check the operating-temperature marking on the chip against your application's environmental requirements. Mixing commercial parts into industrial designs is a common reliability failure that is often diagnosed only after field failures occur. Also verify pin 1 orientation - the TQFP-80 dot/notch indicator must be correctly aligned to avoid reversed mounting.
