PIC18F2680T-I/SO Visão geral

The Microchip PIC18F2680T-I/SO is a high-performance 8-bit PIC microcontroller integrating 64KB of Flash program memory, 3328 bytes of SRAM, and the on-chip ECAN (Enhanced Controller Area Network) module, all housed in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body (7.50 mm) package. Operating at up to 40 MHz from a 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply, the device is positioned for CAN-bus-enabled embedded nodes that demand automotive-grade networking on a classic 8-bit RISC core.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path, optimized for deterministic control, low power, and robust peripheral integration. Within the broader taxonomy, PIC18F2680 belongs to the PIC18F family -> PIC18 8-bit family -> PIC microcontrollers -> 8-bit MCUs -> microcontrollers -> embedded processors -> semiconductors. ECAN-enabled PIC18 devices such as this one are commonly used in CAN nodes where deterministic message handling and Bosch CAN 2.0B compliance matter more than raw throughput.

Key features of the PIC18F2680T-I/SO include 64KB (32K x 16) of self-programmable Flash, 3328 bytes of RAM, 1024 bytes of EEPROM, 25 digital I/O pins, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, two Enhanced USART modules, MSSP (SPI/I2C), one 8-bit and three 16-bit timers, nanoWatt power management, and an industrial-grade -40 °C to +85 °C operating temperature range. The "T" suffix indicates Tape and Reel packaging for high-volume assembly lines.

Internally, the device is built on Microchip's enhanced Harvard RISC architecture with a 16-bit instruction word and 8-bit data path, an 8x8 hardware multiplier, and C-compiler-friendly orthogonal instruction set. The integrated ECAN module supports CAN 2.0A and 2.0B with acceptance filters and prioritized message handling, making it suitable for in-vehicle and industrial CAN networks.

Typical applications include automotive ECAN body and chassis nodes, industrial CAN-based sensor networks, building automation, HVAC controllers, and embedded control in battery management and instrumentation where deterministic 8-bit processing is preferred over 16/32-bit cores.

When designing with this part, ensure the CAN transceiver (e.g., MCP2551 or MCP2562) is paired correctly and that the oscillator configuration bits match the chosen crystal or resonator. Designers migrating from PIC18F2580 should note the increased RAM and the upgraded ECAN peripheral.

Notas de projeto

Decouple VDD (pin 20) with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin and a bulk 10 µF tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor on the same rail. For CAN nodes powered from a 12 V automotive bus, add a series 100 Ω resistor and a TVS diode (e.g., SMAJ5.0CA) close to the VDD pin to suppress load-dump transients. The nanoWatt idle modes draw only a few microamps, but enable the ECAN module's low-power filter settings in firmware to keep average supply current low in sleep.

Route the CANH and CANL traces as a differential pair with 120 Ω characteristic impedance, keeping them length-matched within 5 mm and isolated from switching nodes or noisy digital traces. Place the MCP2551/MCP2562 transceiver as close as possible to the bus connector to minimize stub length. Keep the crystal traces short and symmetric, with the load capacitors (typically 15-33 pF) placed within 3 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins and a grounded guard ring around the oscillator area.

Do not leave the MCLR/VPP/RE3 pin floating: tie it to VDD through a 10 kΩ resistor for normal operation, or drive it directly from the ICSP programmer during debug. Setting the wrong oscillator configuration bits (CONFIG1H) is a frequent bring-up pitfall - confirm HS, XT, or EC mode matches your actual resonator before locking the code. When using ECAN, enable buffer mode and acceptance filters correctly, and remember that CANTX and CANRX remap onto RC2/RC3 (per the pinout), so those pins lose their PORTC GPIO function during ECAN use.

The 28-SOIC package has a thermal resistance (theta_JA) of approximately 80 °C/W in still air. At the industrial 85 °C ambient ceiling and 100 mA peak supply current, the device dissipates under 0.5 W, leaving comfortable thermal headroom. For enclosed IP65-rated industrial enclosures with no airflow, however, derate by 25 % and verify junction temperature in worst-case soak testing. No external heatsink is required for normal ECAN control loops.

Add a 120 Ω termination resistor at each end of the CAN bus, never in the middle, to suppress reflections on long cable runs. For node counts above 30, use the ECAN's programmable wake-up filter to mask high-frequency noise on the bus during sleep. The MSSP SPI peripheral can run reliably up to 10 MHz with a 40 MHz Fosc, but route MOSI/MISO/SCK traces as a matched-length group and place a small 33 Ω series resistor near the source pin to dampen ringing with longer cable stubs.
