PIC18F2610-I/SO Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC18F2610-I/SO is an 8-bit PIC® flash microcontroller (MCU) with 64 KB of program memory, 3,968 bytes of RAM, and 25 digital I/O pins, housed in a 28-pin SOIC wide-body package. It integrates a 10-bit multi-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC), nanoWatt power management, and a peripheral set that includes enhanced CCP, USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), and dual comparators. The CPU delivers up to 10 MIPS at 40 MHz and supports an internal oscillator from 31 kHz to 8 MHz.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory (ROM/Flash), data memory (RAM), and peripherals on one die. The PIC18 family belongs to the broader class of reduced instruction set computing (RISC) microcontrollers, sits within the 8-bit MCU segment, and falls under the wider umbrella of embedded microcontrollers and semiconductors. nanoWatt Technology adds aggressive power-saving modes (idle, sleep, and clock switching) so the part suits battery-powered designs running at 2.0 V to 5.5 V.

Key features include 64 KB flash program memory organized as 32K x 16 words, 3,968 bytes of RAM, 1,024 bytes of EEPROM, an internal 8 MHz oscillator with software-selectable calibration, and a fail-safe clock monitor that shuts the system down safely if the clock source fails. The 10-bit ADC provides up to 25 analog input channels with auto-acquisition, supporting single-ended and differential conversions for sensor signal chains. Programmable low-voltage detect (LVD) and a watchdog timer with its own RC oscillator reinforce system reliability.

The architecture uses a Harvard RISC core with a hardware 8x8 single-cycle multiplier, C-compiler-optimized instruction set, and dual oscillator pins for high-frequency crystal and 32.768 kHz time-base operation. The combination of internal oscillator, programmable LVD, and self-programming flash lets designers implement field-upgradeable firmware with no external components. The 25 I/O ports are 5 V tolerant and individually configurable for digital I/O or peripheral functions.

Typical applications include industrial sensor signal conditioning, building automation nodes, USB-to-UART bridges, motor-control user interfaces, white-goods control boards, low-power remote controls, and general-purpose embedded logic replacement. The ADC-rich pinout suits temperature, pressure, and humidity sensing, while the PWM/CCP channels drive brushed DC or stepper motor stages in white-goods and small appliances.

When designing with this part, place decoupling capacitors (0.1 µF and 10 µF) within 5 mm of VDD/VSS and reserve an MCLR pull-up. The internal oscillator eliminates one crystal, but designers who need accurate USB or RS-485 timing should still attach a high-frequency crystal to OSC1/OSC2. Be mindful that the 28-SOIC package dissipates roughly 800 mW at full CPU load, so lightly copper-poured ground fills are recommended.

Design Notes

Place a 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD (pin 20) and a bulk 10 µF tantalum or ceramic on the same net. Add a second 0.1 µF capacitor near VSS (pin 19) to provide a low-impedance return path. For designs that switch the part in and out of sleep mode aggressively, place a 10 µF bulk capacitor on VDD to handle in-rush current during PLL stabilization. The BOR/LVD block will hold the part in reset if VDD droops, but adequate decoupling reduces the chance of unintentional reset events.

Route the ICSP pins RB6/PGC (pin 27) and RB7/PGD (pin 28) directly to a 6-pin header with no series resistors or buffers in between, and keep the trace length under 50 mm to maintain signal integrity during programming. The MCLR/VPP pin (pin 1) needs a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and a 100 nF capacitor to ground for in-circuit programming stability. Reserve a 4-pin header footprint even if not populated in production; field firmware updates often require ICSP access.

The 28-SOIC wide-body package has longer lead inductance than QFN, so high-speed signals such as the external crystal oscillator (OSC1/OSC2) should be routed with short traces and a grounded guard ring. Keep the crystal within 5 mm of pins 9 and 10, and place the load capacitors directly between each oscillator pin and the nearest VSS. For designs using the internal oscillator, leave the OSC pins as no-connect to avoid stray pickup; for designs that need a precise time base, use a crystal with low ESR (under 60 ohms).

Do not exceed 5.5 V on VDD; the F silicon variant has no internal regulator above 5.5 V and over-voltage can damage flash. When migrating from PIC18F2420 or PIC18F2520 firmware, note that the PIC18F2610 doubles the program memory and RAM, so link scripts and configuration bit settings must be regenerated for the larger memory map. The ADC reference pins RA2/VREF- and RA3/VREF+ must be configured in the ADCON1 register before the ADC will return valid conversions - leaving them as digital I/O is a common cause of 'always zero' ADC readings.
