PIC18F45K22T-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F45K22T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller built on the eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) nanoWatt architecture, delivering 64 MHz of CPU performance with 32 KB of Flash program memory, 1536 B of RAM, and 256 B of EEPROM in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) package. This variant ships on tape and reel (T suffix) and is qualified for the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. The device integrates a rich peripheral set including multiple Enhanced USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), 10/12-bit ADC modules, comparators, PWM, and the standard PIC18 interrupt architecture used across the PIC18F family.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) is a compact, deterministic processor built around a Harvard RISC core that executes one byte per instruction cycle, making it ideal for cost-sensitive embedded control. The PIC18F family extends the baseline PIC16 instruction set with 16-bit instructions, linear addressing, C-friendly architecture, and priority interrupts. Within the power-management hierarchy, MCUs sit alongside microprocessors, FPGAs, and DSPs, with XLP technology positioning this part for battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications where nanoamp sleep currents are required.

Key features include 32 KB Flash (16K x 16), 1536 B RAM, 256 B EEPROM, 36 digital I/O pins, 28 channels of 10-bit ADC, two analog comparators with selectable reference, four 16-bit timers plus two 8-bit timers, three Enhanced USART modules, two MSSP (SPI/I2C) modules, and an enhanced PWM module with up to 5 channels. The nanoWatt XLP technology delivers a typical sleep current under 100 nA and multiple power-managed operating modes including Idle, Sleep, Deep Sleep, and RTCC with Vbat.

From an architecture perspective, the device is based on a modified Harvard core with separate program (Flash) and data (SRAM) buses, enabling simultaneous instruction fetch and operand access. The 16-bit instruction word yields 75 instructions with single-cycle execution (except branches). Internal oscillator blocks include a 16 MHz HFINTOSC and 31 kHz LFINTOSC, selectable to support system clock switching between performance and low-power modes. The In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) and In-Circuit Debugger (ICD) interfaces use two pins plus reset for programming and debugging without external hardware beyond an MPLAB Snap, PICkit, or ICD header.

Typical applications include low-power industrial sensor nodes, battery-powered IoT edge devices, home appliance control boards, USB peripherals using the PIC18 USB stack, motor control via the PWM and comparator subsystems, and human-machine interface panels with segmented LCD driving through the integrated charge pump. The wide 1.8 V to 5.5 V VDD range further simplifies designs powered from 2xAA cells, Li-Ion packs, or 5 V regulated rails.

When designing with this device, ensure decoupling capacitors of 100 nF and 10 uF are placed within 5 mm of the VDD pins, and that the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK traces are kept short with 4.7 kohm pull-ups on PGC/PGD as recommended by the manufacturer datasheet. Programming voltage considerations must follow Microchip specification for low-voltage ICSP. The QFN-44 exposed pad must be soldered to the ground plane for thermal and electrical performance.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC18F45K22T-I/ML suits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because its nanoWatt XLP architecture delivers a typical sleep current below 100 nA while keeping the 64 MHz CPU ready for immediate wake on interrupt. The 28-channel 10-bit ADC multiplexes across 36 I/O pins, allowing direct connection of temperature, humidity, and analog sensor chains without external muxes. Operating from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, the device runs directly from 2xAA cells or a Li-Ion pack, eliminating boost regulators and shrinking BOM cost. UART, SPI, and I2C peripherals connect to sub-GHz radios, BLE modules, or LoRa transceivers for low-duty-cycle telemetry. Estimated battery life: with 1-second wake intervals and average load under 1 mA, two AA cells last 3-5 years depending on TX current.

🏭

Industrial Control and Sensor Conditioning

The PIC18F45K22T-I/ML serves industrial control boards where deterministic 8-bit processing, 5 V tolerance, and noise immunity are required. Its 36 digital I/O pins drive relays, optocouplers, and triac interfaces for motor starters and solenoid banks, while the enhanced PWM with up to 5 channels delivers brushed DC motor speed control up to 20 kHz without CPU intervention. The two analog comparators with programmable voltage reference implement under-voltage, over-current, and zero-cross detection without external op-amps. Industrial -40C to +85C operating range supports factory floor deployment. The 28-channel 10-bit ADC is well matched to 4-20 mA loop transmitters when paired with a sense resistor and input protection.

🔧

USB Peripheral and HID Device

Although the K22 does not include a native USB peripheral, the PIC18F45K22T-I/ML pairs naturally with Microchip's external USB interface ICs to implement HID, CDC, or vendor-class devices. The 64 MHz CPU and 1536 B RAM provide ample headroom for USB stack buffering, and the 32 KB Flash holds full HID report descriptors, command parsers, and bootloader code. Three EUSART modules permit simultaneous USB-to-UART bridging, GPS NMEA parsing, and debug console output on the same chip. Operating from 5 V USB VBUS, the device requires no separate power supply. ICSP programming allows field firmware updates over the USB bridge itself, eliminating external programming headers in production.

🏠

Home Appliance Control Board

The PIC18F45K22T-I/ML is well suited to washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, and HVAC controllers that demand reliable 8-bit performance with cost-effective peripherals. Notas de projeto

The PIC18F45K22T-I/ML requires both a 100 nF decoupling capacitor and a 10 uF bulk capacitor placed within 5 mm of each VDD pin pair (pins 10/20/30/40 and matching VSS). Per the Microchip datasheet, low-impedance ground returns are critical because the device's nanoWatt XLP modes are sensitive to digital switching noise on VDD. Place the 100 nF caps closest to the IC and the 10 uF caps adjacent to them. For battery applications, use a low-leakage ceramic (C0G/NP0) for the bulk capacitor to avoid exceeding 1 uA quiescent current budget.

The 44-pin QFN package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) on the underside that MUST be soldered to the ground plane for both electrical performance and thermal dissipation. The QFN land pattern should use a 5x5 array of thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) connecting the EP to inner ground planes. Per Microchip's QFN-44 design guide, the EP pad must not be left floating or the device may exhibit ADC reference errors and reduced thermal performance at elevated ambient temperatures. Estimate: at 64 MHz full activity the device dissipates approximately 100-150 mW which the EP efficiently removes.

Do not connect PGC (RB6) and PGD (RB7) to external pull-up resistors when using ICSP - the programmer expects to drive these pins directly. Adding 10 kohm pull-ups prevents reliable programming. Also, the MCLR pin requires a 4.7 kohm pull-up to VDD in normal operation; if left floating, the device may reset intermittently. For low-voltage ICSP mode, the MCLR pull-up must be present and the configuration bits must enable LVP. Finally, the configuration words must be set correctly for the oscillator source (HS, XT, INTOSC modes) before code execution begins, or the device will fail to start.

Keep analog and digital signal traces separated on the PCB. Route the analog inputs (AN0-AN27) away from the PWM outputs and switching power traces, and place the AVSS/AVDD pair (when present, otherwise tie to VSS/VDD) with its own 100 nF + 10 uF decoupling. The crystal oscillator pins (RA6/OSC2 and RA7/OSC1) should be surrounded by a ground guard ring, and the crystal traces must be kept under 5 mm total length. ADC accuracy degrades if the analog reference pin (RA3/VREF+) sees more than 10 mV of noise from digital switching.
