PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV Visão geral
What is a 16-bit microcontroller? A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, non-volatile program memory (Flash), volatile data memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripherals such as ADCs, timers, communication interfaces, and I/O. A 16-bit MCU like the PIC24FV family occupies the middle ground between 8-bit MCUs (lowest cost, lowest performance) and 32-bit MCUs (highest performance, highest cost), offering enough compute headroom for sensor fusion, motor control, and signal processing without the power and code-size overhead of a Cortex-M class device. PIC24F devices specifically target low-power portable applications through Microchip's XLP technology, which minimizes active and sleep currents so that coin-cell and energy-harvesting designs remain viable.
The PIC24FV08KM204 integrates 22 channels of 10-bit/12-bit ADC, dual 8-bit DACs, configurable logic cells, op-amps, multiple Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, and communication peripherals. XLP features deliver nanoWatt sleep currents, allowing the device to wake on interrupts for asynchronous sampling.
Typical applications include handheld medical devices, IoT sensor nodes, low-energy wireless platforms, USB/LED lighting controllers, and consumer electronics. Designers choose this MCU when balancing code density, peripheral integration, and sub-microamp standby current in compact PCB footprints.
Designers must respect the MV (UQFN-48 6x6 mm) land pattern, ensure exposed-pad soldering for thermal dissipation, and select the appropriate -E (extended) or -I (industrial) temperature grade per their end environment. Aplicações típicas
PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Handheld Medical Diagnostic Device, USB HID / CDC Embedded Device, Industrial Sensor Transmitter, LED Lighting Controller, Automotive Body Electronics.
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node
The PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV's nanoWatt sleep currents and integrated 22-channel 10/12-bit ADC make it ideal for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes that spend most of their life in deep sleep and only wake periodically to sample and transmit. Its 32 MHz core provides enough headroom to run a BLE stack shim or LoRaWAN state machine while the dual 8-bit DACs and op-amps can directly drive analog front-ends without external components, reducing BOM cost and PCB area.
Recomendado
Handheld Medical Diagnostic Device
The extended -40C to +125C temperature grade and integrated 22-channel ADC make the PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV well-suited for handheld medical diagnostic instruments such as glucometers, pulse oximeters, and multi-parameter patient monitors. Its 16-bit MIPS class performance handles front-end signal conditioning through the integrated op-amps while staying within strict power budgets of two AAA cells, and the 8 KB Flash is sufficient for calibration tables and small UI state machines.
Recomendado
USB HID / CDC Embedded Device
The PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV integrates a USB Full-Speed peripheral and enough Flash (8 KB) to implement HID or CDC class firmware for tools like custom keyboards, configurators, or USB-to-UART bridges. Its 32 MHz core comfortably runs USB polling at 1 ms intervals while leaving MIPS headroom for command parsing and protocol conversion, and the UQFN-48 6x6 mm package fits into compact USB dongle form factors.
Recomendado
Industrial Sensor Transmitter
For 4-20 mA loop-powered or industrial sensor transmitters, the PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV's extended temperature grade and integrated 12-bit ADC deliver accurate measurements in harsh factory environments. Its configurable logic cell (CLC) lets designers implement custom glue logic without external gates, while the dual 8-bit DACs can drive 4-20 mA loops or PWM outputs directly, saving cost and board space in field-mounted sensor heads.
Recomendado
LED Lighting Controller
The PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV is well matched to LED lighting controllers where multiple CCP/PWM channels drive RGB or tunable-white LED strings. Its 32 MHz core and flexible timer architecture support smooth dimming curves and color-mixing algorithms, while the integrated op-amps can condition current-sense feedback without external components. The XLP sleep modes enable ultra-low standby consumption for energy-star compliant fixtures.
Recomendado
Automotive Body Electronics
With its extended -40C to +125C operating range and rich peripheral set, the PIC24FV08KM204-E/MV fits automotive body electronics modules such as interior lighting controllers, HVAC flap drivers, and seat-control interfaces. The configurable logic cell and PWM modules enable direct drive of small motors and LEDs, while the 22 ADC channels can read multiple position sensors and switches through a single chip, reducing harness complexity in vehicle sub-assemblies.

Notas de projeto
The UQFN-48 MV package uses an exposed thermal pad (EP) on its underside that MUST be soldered to a sufficiently large copper pour on the PCB for both thermal dissipation and electrical grounding. A minimum 1 square inch copper plane connected via at least 9 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) is recommended for designs that run the ADC at full sampling rate or drive heavy GPIO loads.
Place the 0.1 uF VDD/VSS decoupling capacitor as close as possible to pins 7, 17, and 45 (AVDD). Add a bulk 10 uF ceramic or tantalum capacitor on the main VDD rail. For USB applications, place the VUSB bypass cap within 5 mm of pin 32, and route D+/D- as a 90 ohm differential pair with ground reference.
Do not leave the MCLR pin floating; tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor and a 100 nF capacitor to ground for proper reset behavior. The SOSC pins (20, 21) must be configured correctly in firmware if a 32.768 kHz crystal is used for RTCC - leaving them in analog mode by default will prevent oscillation startup.
Keep the analog input traces (RA0-RA7, RB1-RB3) short and surrounded by a ground pour to minimize ADC noise pickup. Avoid routing digital switching signals (PWM, UART) directly above or below analog traces. For 12-bit ADC accuracy, reference the ADC to a dedicated AVSS/AVDD pair rather than sharing digital ground return currents.
