ULN2803APGOM Visão geral
A Darlington sink driver is a type of integrated bipolar transistor array that provides high current gain by cascading two NPN transistors inside a single package. The ULN2803APGOM belongs to the bipolar transistor array -> Darlington transistor array -> power management IC hierarchy. By sinking current to ground (low-side switching), it allows a low-power logic output to control high-power loads that would otherwise damage a microcontroller I/O pin. This topology is widely used for interface between digital control circuits and electromechanical actuators.
Key specifications include a minimum DC current gain (hFE) of approximately 2000 at low collector current due to the Darlington cascade, an input series base resistor of 2.7 kOhm sized for 5 V CMOS logic, and an integral collector-emitter clamp diode on every channel rated for switching inductive transients. The package dissipates up to 2.25 W at 25 C ambient, derating linearly to zero at 125 C. The 18-pin PDIP form factor supports easy breadboarding and through-hole PCB prototyping.
Typical applications include relay and solenoid drivers for industrial automation, unipolar stepper motor winding drivers, LED matrix row/column sinks, inkjet printer head drivers, and lamp/display drivers. The eight parallel channels also make it useful for multi-axis low-side switching in robotics and HVAC controls.
When designing with this part, ensure that the total package dissipation does not exceed 2.25 W at 25 C ambient with appropriate linear derating above 25 C. Place flyback clamp diodes (already integrated) will protect the device when switching inductive loads, but external free-wheeling diodes or snubbers may be needed for very fast switching edges.

Aplicações típicas
ULN2803APGOM é adequado para 7 aplicaçãos: Relay and Solenoid Driver Array, Unipolar Stepper Motor Winding Driver, LED Matrix Row/Column Sink Driver, Inkjet Printer Head Driver, Lamp and Display Panel Driver, Multi-Axis Low-Side Switching in Robotics, HVAC and Building Automation Control Outputs.
Relay and Solenoid Driver Array
Drives up to eight 5 V or 12 V relays/solenoids directly from a 5 V MCU without driver transistors. The ULN2803APGOM sinks 500 mA per channel through its Darlington cascade, providing a current gain of ~2000 that lets a 1 mA MCU output switch a 500 mA coil. The integrated free-wheeling clamp diode absorbs the inductive kickback when the coil de-energizes, protecting the MCU and the array. Place a 100 nF bypass cap on the supply rail and route each output to a coil terminal; the other coil terminal connects to V+. Typical for HVAC control boards, industrial automation panels, and home appliance controllers where multi-channel discrete transistors would consume too much board area.
Recomendado
Unipolar Stepper Motor Winding Driver
Switches the four or five windings of small unipolar stepper motors rated up to 500 mA per phase at voltages below 50 V. The ULN2803APGOM's 8 channels are perfect for driving two stepper motors (4 windings each) from a single IC, with the integrated clamp diodes absorbing the back-EMF when each winding de-energizes during the commutation sequence. The Darlington cascade delivers the high current gain needed to step the motor at hundreds of RPM without overloading the MCU pins. Common in printers, 3D printers, CNC machines, and small robotics where PCB area is constrained and a low-side drive topology is acceptable.
Recomendado
LED Matrix Row/Column Sink Driver
Sinks current to ground on the cathode side of an 8xN LED matrix, with the rows driven high through current-limiting resistors. The ULN2803APGOM's 8 channels match the standard 8-row multiplexed LED matrix architecture, and the 500 mA per channel rating supports bright common-anode displays. The CMOS-compatible 2.7 kOhm input resistors accept 5 V logic directly from shift registers or MCU pins without additional buffers. The integral clamp diodes protect the array when PWM dimming causes inductive kickback in long LED matrix wiring harnesses. Typical for scoreboards, scrolling message signs, and industrial panel indicators.
Recomendado
Inkjet Printer Head Driver
Drives the thermal inkjet resistors or piezo actuator channels in legacy inkjet printer designs. The ULN2803APGOM's 8-channel low-side topology matches the typical 8-nozzle inkjet print head architecture, with each Darlington sinking up to 500 mA to fire a nozzle. The 50 V VCEO rating allows high-voltage pulse waveforms used in piezo inkjet heads. The integrated clamp diodes absorb the inductive ringing when each nozzle channel is de-energized after a firing pulse. This was the standard driver IC in 1990s-2000s era inkjet printers and remains in use today in industrial marking and coding equipment.
Recomendado
Lamp and Display Panel Driver
Switches incandescent indicator lamps, 7-segment LED displays, or VFD (vacuum fluorescent display) segments in automotive dashboards, audio equipment, and industrial control panels. The ULN2803APGOM sinks up to 500 mA per channel, easily handling the 100-200 mA needed for a bright 7-segment digit or a small incandescent lamp. The DIP-18 package fits on legacy through-hole panel boards, and the 2.7 kOhm CMOS input allows direct connection to 5 V logic without additional driver transistors. Typical for car instrument clusters, vintage audio gear restoration, and HMIs that need a rugged through-hole solution.

Multi-Axis Low-Side Switching in Robotics
Controls multiple DC motors, solenoids, or actuators in small robotic platforms where each axis is switched by a low-side Darlington. The ULN2803APGOM's 8 channels support hexapod or octopod robot leg actuators, gripper solenoids, or pan/tilt camera mounts. The Darlington cascade's high current gain allows battery-powered MCUs running at 3.3 V or 5 V to drive 12 V actuators through a logic-level interface. The integrated clamp diodes protect the array from the back-EMF of small DC gearmotors, eliminating the need for external flyback diodes across every actuator. Common in hobby robotics, education platforms, and small UAV gimbal control boards.

HVAC and Building Automation Control Outputs
Switches zone valves, damper actuators, contactors, and indicator lamps in HVAC controllers and building automation panels. The ULN2803APGOM provides 8 isolated low-side outputs from a single MCU, each capable of 500 mA to switch small 24 VAC loads through relays. The CMOS-compatible inputs interface directly to BACnet or Modbus controller boards running at 5 V logic. The 50 V VCEO and -40 to +85 C operating temperature cover commercial building HVAC environments. Typical for multi-zone heating controllers, ventilation damper panels, and access control relay racks.

Notas de projeto
The PDIP-18 package is rated for 2.25 W total dissipation at 25 C ambient and derates linearly to zero at 125 C. When all 8 channels operate at full 500 mA, total dissipation can exceed 2 W even at moderate collector-emitter saturation. Estimated: with VCE(sat) = 1.0 V at 350 mA per channel, 8 channels dissipate roughly 2.8 W - above the 25 C rating. For continuous multi-channel full-load operation, either reduce per-channel current to about 280 mA or implement external cooling (copper pour, airflow).
Place a 100 nF ceramic bypass capacitor between V+ (pin 9, common clamp cathode) and GND (pin 10) as close to the IC as possible to suppress transient spikes when switching inductive loads. Route the GND pin (10) directly to a low-impedance ground plane to minimize ground bounce across multiple switching channels. Keep high-current load traces short and away from sensitive analog inputs to reduce EMI coupling.
Pin 9 (COM) is the common cathode of the eight clamp diodes and MUST be connected to the positive load supply (V+). If left floating, inductive kickback will pull the outputs above 50 V and destroy the Darlington outputs. Do not exceed 500 mA continuous per channel - the open-collector outputs share a thermal envelope and running all 8 at full current simultaneously exceeds package dissipation at 25 C ambient. For 3.3 V logic inputs, ensure the 2.7 kOhm input resistor still provides enough base current (3.3 V / 2.7 kOhm = 1.2 mA is sufficient for the Darlington).
Separate the input traces (pins 1-8) from the output traces (pins 11-18) on the PCB to minimize cross-talk between high-current outputs and logic-level inputs. When driving inductive loads (relays, solenoids, motors), add a small RC snubber (100 ohm + 100 nF) in parallel with each load for applications where the integrated clamp diode response is too slow, e.g. high-frequency PWM stepping of stepper motors above 1 kHz.
