ATSAML21J17B-MNT Обзор
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program and data memory, peripherals, and I/O into one package. The ATSAML21J17B-MNT belongs to the hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded MCU -> 32-bit ARM MCU -> ultra-low-power Cortex-M0+ MCU. The SAM L21 family is a Cortex-M0+ line; Cortex-M0+ is a 32-bit ARM processor core optimised for energy efficiency, targeting battery-powered IoT, wearable, and sensor applications.
Key features include 2.46 CoreMark/MHz, hardware multiplier, single-cycle I/O port access, a 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC, DAC, comparators, SERCOM configurable serial interfaces, and full-speed USB with internal 3.3V regulator. The device supports SleepWalking, multiple low-power modes, and a Segment LCD controller for direct glass drive, removing the need for an external LCD driver IC. AES, true random number generator (TRNG), and integrity check modules support cryptographic and tamper-detection use cases.
The ATSAML21J17B-MNT uses a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ core with two AHB-Lite bus masters and a peripheral event system for zero-latency task wake-up. Up to 24 channels of DMA offload the CPU; SERCOM peripherals can be mapped to most pins, simplifying PCB routing. The on-chip voltage regulator generates core logic from a single supply, while a separate RTC domain retains timekeeping down to 200nA.
Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, wearable health and fitness devices, smart meters, industrial HMI with LCD readout, remote controls, and battery-powered safety peripherals such as smoke detectors. The wide 1.6V-3.6V supply allows direct connection to single-cell Li-ion or two-AA chemistries without a boost converter.
Designers should match the chosen package (64-QFN) against available PCB area and thermal budget. Unused pins should be left as no-connect or configured as output-low to minimise current draw. For functional-safety firmware, the on-chip self-test BIST libraries accelerate IEC 60730 / UL 60730 class B certification. The datasheet ordering code suffix -MNT denotes 64-QFN, tape-and-reel, -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade.
This page combines distributor pricing, drop-in alternative MPNs, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Заметки по проектированию
Estimated: At 48 MHz with all peripherals active and 3.3V supply, core current consumption is approximately 1.7 mA. Use the SAM L21 family datasheet power-scaling tables to scale VDDIO and core voltage down to 1.62V in low-power tasks to reduce active current proportionally. Switch to Sleep mode (200nA) whenever the CPU is idle, and use SleepWalking SERCOM and ADC peripherals to wake the CPU only on a relevant event rather than polling. Estimated battery life on CR2032 (220 mAh) at 1% average duty cycle is 10+ years.
The 64-pin QFN (9x9) package has an exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to a sufficient copper pour on the PCB (recommended 1 sq inch minimum, with thermal vias). Estimated: theta_JA on a 2-layer JEDEC EIA/JESD51 1sq-inch 2-oz pour is roughly 30 C/W. The Cortex-M0+ is very low power so this is rarely a thermal constraint, but the thermal pad is essential for electrical ground return and QFN solder-joint reliability during reflow and thermal cycling.
Place a 100nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin and a single 4.7uF bulk capacitor near the package. Connect the exposed pad (EP) to GND with a star-ground or solid ground pour; do not route signal traces under the EP. For USB designs, place 22 ohm source-series terminations on DP and DM near the MCU, and follow USB-IF high-speed routing guidelines for the 90-ohm differential pair. Keep the 32 kHz crystal traces short and surrounded by ground.
Do not exceed 3.6V on VDDIO or VDDIN, including transients - the SAM L21 is not 5V tolerant on any pin. Always configure unused pins as output-low (not input with pull-up) to avoid parasitic current draws; unused input pins with pull-ups can each leak several µA. For low-power designs, disable the on-chip voltage regulator's unused analog blocks (AC, TC, etc.) in the SUPC->VREG register. Verify the BOD33 threshold matches your brownout strategy.
Route SERCOM peripherals with care: SERCOM I/O muxing allows most signals on most pins, but two pins in the same SERCOM share a clock domain and cannot be split across separate VDDIO banks. For mixed 1.8V and 3.3V I/O designs, place the 1.8V bank on one side of the package and the 3.3V bank on the other. Keep the SWD/SWCK pins accessible for in-circuit programming; add a 2x5 1.27mm header footprint even on production boards for field firmware updates.
