ATXMEGA64A4U-AU Обзор

The Microchip Technology ATXMEGA64A4U-AU is a low-power, high-performance 8/16-bit AVR XMEGA A4U microcontroller delivering up to 32 MIPS throughput at 32 MHz, with 64 KB of self-programming Flash, 4 KB SRAM, 2 KB EEPROM and a 4 KB boot code section, housed in a 44-pin TQFP package rated for industrial temperature (-40C to +85C) operation from 1.6 V to 3.6 V.

An AVR XMEGA microcontroller is a member of the 8/16-bit RISC microcontroller family that combines an enhanced Harvard architecture with rich on-chip peripherals such as DMA, an event system and a USB 2.0 Full-Speed controller. In the broader taxonomy it sits under MCU -> RISC microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor. The XMEGA series is engineered for deterministic, low-latency I/O handling at modest clock rates while keeping active and sleep current far below typical ARM Cortex-M parts.

Key features include a 4-channel DMA controller, an 8-channel peripheral event system that lets peripherals trigger each other without CPU intervention, a hardware AES/DES crypto engine, a 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC, two 12-bit DACs and an integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed device/host controller. The device also exposes an external bus interface for memory-mapped peripherals and provides up to 34 programmable I/O pins with configurable drive strength and slew-rate control.

The A4U die is implemented on a low-leakage CMOS process, and the core supports 136 new instructions including hardware multiply, single-cycle GPIO access and atomic bit manipulation. The integrated peripheral event system routes peripheral-to-peripheral triggers across the device with deterministic sub-microsecond latency, allowing sensor data acquisition and PWM updates to occur while the core sleeps, dramatically lowering average power for battery-powered designs.

Typical applications include USB human-interface devices such as keyboards, mice and game controllers, industrial sensor hubs, portable medical monitors, USB-to-UART bridge dongles, low-power IoT edge nodes and battery-backed data loggers. The wide 1.6 V to 3.6 V supply range is well suited to single-cell Li-ion and 2xAA chemistries.

When designing with this part, place the 0.1 uF VCC decoupling caps adjacent to each power pin and follow the USB DP/DN 90-ohm differential layout rules to maintain USB-IF compliance. The internal 32 kHz calibrated oscillator can serve as the RTC source without an external crystal for cost-sensitive designs.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives within the XMEGA family and practical design notes not aggregated by DigiKey, Mouser or Octopart.

Типичное применение

ATXMEGA64A4U-AU подходит для 6 применениеs: USB Human Interface Device (HID), Industrial Sensor Hub / Edge Node, Portable Medical Monitor, USB-to-UART / USB-to-SPI Bridge Dongle, Battery-Backed Data Logger, Low-Power IoT Edge Node (USB-Ethernet Bridge).

🧩

USB Human Interface Device (HID)

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU integrates a USB 2.0 Full-Speed device/host controller with on-chip transceiver, removing the need for an external FTDI bridge. Its 32 MIPS throughput at 32 MHz lets a single MCU scan a keyboard matrix at 8 kHz while servicing USB HID reports at 1 kHz with sub-millisecond latency. The 12-bit ADC and two 12-bit DACs enable cap-sense and analog joystick reading on the same chip, and the event system lets a GPIO change wake the CPU only when needed. The 64 KB Flash fits a USB HID boot loader plus a USB stack and an application image; 4 KB SRAM is more than enough for HID reports and 8-byte endpoint buffers. Power: at 3.3 V and 32 MHz active current is roughly 10 mA, well within USB suspend budget when the MCU enters the 1 uA power-save sleep mode between HID events.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hub / Edge Node

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU's 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC, four-channel DMA controller and eight-channel event system make it well suited as a multi-sensor hub aggregating analog and digital inputs in industrial plants. The event system routes ADC conversions and timer triggers directly to the DAC and DMA, so the 32 MIPS core can shut down between acquisitions and wake only to process completed DMA blocks - reducing average power below 5 mA in typical 1 kHz sampling profiles. The 1.6 V to 3.6 V supply tolerates 24 V industrial buses when paired with a simple external LDO, while the 44-TQFP footprint supports panel-mount PCBs. The 2 KB EEPROM stores per-sensor calibration constants and the 4 KB SRAM buffers acquisition bursts. AEC-Q100 is not qualified, so use ATSAM-style parts for full automotive deployments; this part is ideal for non-automotive industrial edge nodes.

💊

Portable Medical Monitor

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU's low active current (~10 mA at 32 MHz) and 1 uA power-save sleep mode make it a strong MCU fit for battery-powered medical monitors such as pulse oximeters, glucometers and handheld ECG front-ends. The 12-bit 1 MSPS ADC digitizes biopotential or PPG signals with sufficient dynamic range for clinical-grade measurements when oversampled and averaged, while the two 12-bit DACs drive analog output channels for stimulation or LED brightness control on SpO2 finger clips. The USB Full-Speed controller charges the Li-ion cell and streams patient data to a host PC simultaneously, replacing a dedicated charge controller in cost-sensitive designs. The 64 KB Flash fits a USB CDC stack plus a clinical algorithm in C; 4 KB SRAM buffers a 1-second PPG sample stream at 1 kHz comfortably. Note: this part is not FDA-cleared as a medical component; only the OEM's complete system can be cleared.

🌐

USB-to-UART / USB-to-SPI Bridge Dongle

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU integrates a USB 2.0 Full-Speed controller that can present as a CDC-ACM virtual COM port while exposing the on-chip UART, SPI or I2C peripherals to an external host - a one-chip USB-to-UART bridge that replaces the popular FT232R / CP2102N. The 32 MIPS throughput sustains 12 Mbps USB bandwidth while bit-banging at 1 Mbps UART, 10 Mbps SPI or 400 kHz I2C concurrently through the event system. The 4 KB SRAM holds USB endpoint buffers plus a 1 KB TX/RX ring buffer, while 64 KB Flash fits the LUFA or Atmel USB stack plus a custom protocol layer. The industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C) and 1.6 V to 3.6 V supply let it run straight from a 3.3 V USB rail without an LDO, saving PCB area.

⚡

Battery-Backed Data Logger

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU's 64 KB flash is a parameter fit for buffering 8 KB/s data streams to external SPI flash while the MCU consumes less than 1 mA active current at 3.3 V and 8 MHz. The 2 KB EEPROM stores calibration data that must survive battery removal, and the 1.6 V to 3.6 V supply range operates directly from a single CR2032 coin cell when system clock is dropped to 32 kHz, with the on-chip RTC keeping timestamps. The event system routes the RTC alarm to the ADC and DMA, capturing sensor samples at sub-second intervals without waking the CPU. The 44-TQFP footprint supports a compact 25x25 mm logger form factor with CR2032 holder, USB port and SPI flash pad. Power budget: at 1 sample/minute the average current is approximately 25 uA, giving roughly 12 months of life on a 220 mAh CR2032.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Edge Node (USB-Ethernet Bridge)

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU's USB host controller can attach to a USB-Ethernet or USB-WiFi adapter, letting it act as a low-power gateway between local sensors and an IP network - a one-chip IoT edge node that removes a Linux processor. The four-channel DMA moves USB packets to memory at line rate without CPU intervention, while the event system wakes on packet arrival. The 32 MIPS core runs a minimal TCP/IP stack such as uIP or lwIP, with the 64 KB Flash holding both the IP stack and an MQTT-SN or CoAP application layer. The 1.6 V to 3.6 V supply lets the part run directly from a USB-powered 3.3 V rail, eliminating an additional LDO and shrinking PCB area. Power-save mode draws 1 uA, so the gateway spends most of its life sleeping until a USB-Ethernet packet triggers an interrupt.

What is the operating voltage range of the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU?
The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU operates from 1.6 V to 3.6 V according to the Microchip XMEGA A4U datasheet. This wide supply range is well suited to single-cell Li-ion (3.0 V to 4.2 V) and 2xAA (2.0 V to 3.2 V) chemistries. Designers must keep VCC inside the spec for ADC accuracy, since the 1.2 V internal reference tracks VCC.
How much Flash, SRAM and EEPROM does the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU have?
The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU integrates 64 KB self-programming Flash (organized as 32K x 16), 4 KB SRAM, 2 KB EEPROM and a separate 4 KB boot code section. The boot section lets designers implement a USB bootloader or FUSE-protected bootloader independent of the application Flash, with locked write access to prevent firmware tampering.
Does the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU have a USB controller?
Yes, the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU integrates a USB 2.0 Full-Speed device and host controller with on-chip transceiver. According to the Microchip XMEGA A4U datasheet, the USB controller supports 12 Mbps full-speed operation with up to 8 endpoints, removing the need for an external FTDI bridge or external PHY in many HID, CDC and CDC-ACM designs.
What is the maximum CPU clock and MIPS throughput of the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU?
The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU runs at up to 32 MHz from a 2 MHz to 32 MHz system clock source, achieving up to 32 MIPS throughput per the Microchip XMEGA A4U datasheet. The 1-cycle 16-bit instruction path and 2-cycle 32-bit access let typical signal-processing and bit-banging tasks complete in fewer cycles than legacy AVR parts.
Is the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU pin-compatible with the ATXMEGA64A4 (A4 series)?
No - the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU adds a USB controller and event system that the original ATXMEGA64A4 lacked, so the pinout is NOT a drop-in replacement. Application Note AVR1021 (Atmel-8417) is the official migration guide for moving A4 designs to A4U, and lists pin remapping (notably USB DP/DN) that requires PCB changes.
Where can I buy the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU online?

Справочные инженерные данные для ATXMEGA64A4U-AU — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose the ATXMEGA64A4U-AU when you need an AVR XMEGA microcontroller with USB 2.0 Full-Speed device/host support, 64 KB Flash, 4 KB SRAM, and a 44-pin TQFP footprint at the lowest cost within the A4U family. Step down to the ATXMEGA32A4U-AU when your firmware fits in 32 KB Flash and BOM is the deciding cost; step up to the ATXMEGA128A4U-AUR when firmware exceeds 64 KB or you need 8 KB SRAM. All five alternatives share the same 44-TQFP pinout, so the same PCB works across the family - simply re-flash the boot loader fuse for the chosen Flash size. For non-USB designs at lower cost, the ATXMEGA64A3-AU drops USB entirely but keeps the same peripheral set. For automotive, consider ATSAM-family Cortex-M parts because the XMEGA family is not AEC-Q100 qualified.

Заметки по проектированию

The ATXMEGA64A4U-AU integrates a 1.6 V to 3.6 V LDO input stage; place a 1 uF + 100 nF decoupling pair as close as possible to each VCC pin (44-TQFP exposes multiple VCC and GND pins). For USB bus-powered designs, add a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor on VBUS to satisfy the USB-IF inrush specification; the internal 3.3 V regulator cannot supply peak USB transmit current without external bulk. The power-save mode draws roughly 1 uA but requires the 32 kHz ULP oscillator to be active; activate it via the RTC interrupt instead of polling.

For USB Full-Speed compliance, route the D+ (PE0) and D- (PE1) traces as a 90-ohm differential pair with no stubs and matched length within 150 mil. Keep the USB traces clear of the high-speed ADC traces and switch-mode power traces, and place the 22-ohm series source termination on each USB D+/D line near the MCU. The AVCC pin must be tied to VCC through a ferrite bead, with a 100 nF + 10 uF local decoupling cap, to keep digital switching noise out of the ADC reference.

Do not skip the NRST external pull-up; the internal pull-up is weak and an unreset MCU may enter UART bootloader mode erratically after a brown-out. Ensure the boot loader fuse is configured (BOOTRST cleared) so the application starts at address 0x0000 in production; test the boot section independently from the application section. The XMEGA USB controller requires a 48 MHz PLL reference derived from a stable 12 MHz or 32 kHz input; verify crystal load capacitance matches the crystal datasheet, or USB enumeration will fail intermittently.

Estimated: at 32 MHz active current of approximately 10 mA at 3.3 V, dissipation is roughly 33 mW; with a 44-TQFP thermal resistance of approximately 50 C/W, junction temperature rise above ambient is about 1.7 C, well within the industrial -40C to +85C range. However, USB transmit bursts can briefly raise active current to 30 mA, so thermal headroom of at least 10 C above ambient is recommended for sustained USB Full-Speed traffic.
