The QFN-32 package has an exposed thermal pad (EP) that MUST be soldered to a PCB ground copper pour for specified thermal and EMI performance. Use at least 8 thermal via holes in the EP land pattern connecting top-side copper to an inner ground plane. Without proper EP soldering, junction temperature can exceed 125°C under normal load and the part may behave erratically during high-current transmitter switching.
The four charge-pump capacitors (C1, C2 and the associated C1+/C1-/C2+/C2- pins) must be 0.1 µF low-ESR ceramic types placed within 5 mm of their respective IC pins. Use X7R or X5R dielectric, not Y5V or Z5U, which lose capacitance with bias voltage. Long trace runs to the charge-pump capacitors cause excessive ripple on V+ and V- and can fail EIA/TIA-232 driver output swing requirements at cold temperature.
Do not leave the FORCEOFF, FORCEON, SHDN, or INVALID pins floating. Tie FORCEOFF and FORCEON high through a 100 kΩ pull-up to VCC for always-on operation, or tie SHDN high to enable the device. Floating logic inputs can pick up noise and randomly disable the transmitters or receivers.
