PIC16C63A-04/SO Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC16C63A-04/SO is an 8-bit CMOS microcontroller based on the PIC16C family RISC architecture, operating at 4 MHz with 200 ns instruction execution time and packaged in a 28-pin SOIC. It integrates 7 KB (4K x 14) of one-time-programmable (OTP) program memory, 192 bytes of RAM, and 22 digital I/O pins, making it a mid-range member of the PIC16C6x family designed for embedded control applications requiring deterministic, low-latency firmware execution.

What is an 8-bit OTP microcontroller? An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip computer that executes instructions on 8-bit-wide data and is the workhorse of low-cost embedded systems. OTP (One-Time-Programmable) memory can be written exactly once and cannot be erased, which makes these parts well-suited to high-volume production where code changes are infrequent. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC16C63A belongs to: microcontroller -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC16 family -> PIC16C6x sub-family -> CMOS RISC architecture -> semiconductor IC. This hierarchy governs tool selection, peripheral compatibility, and migration paths.

Key features of the PIC16C63A-04/SO include a 35-instruction RISC instruction set where only program branches take two cycles, four 8-bit digital I/O ports (PORTA, PORTB, PORTC, plus shared lines), an enhanced USART with baud-rate generator for serial communications, a capture/compare/PWM (CCP) module, a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, and two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer. Supply voltage spans 4.0 V to 5.5 V and the device draws low operating current, with a power-saving SLEEP mode that halts the oscillator and peripherals.

Architecturally, the PIC16C63A uses a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, enabling instruction fetch and operand access in a single cycle. The CMOS process delivers low power consumption and high noise immunity. The 28-SOIC package is a wide-body surface-mount format suitable for hand-solderable prototypes and automated assembly lines.

Typical applications include industrial control, automotive body electronics, consumer appliances, security and alarm systems, motor control, and instrumentation front-ends. The integrated USART, CCP and 10-bit ADC reduce external component count in many designs.

Design considerations: place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor close to VDD and ensure the MCLR pin is pulled high through a resistor for normal operation. OTP memory programming requires the ICSP interface and a programmer such as the MPLAB PM3.

Типичное применение

PIC16C63A-04/SO подходит для 7 применениеs: Industrial Control and Automation, Automotive Body Electronics, Consumer Appliance Control, Security and Alarm Systems, Instrumentation and Data Acquisition Front-End, Motor Control and PWM Drivers, Hobbyist and Educational Embedded Platforms.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

The PIC16C63A-04/SO fits industrial control applications because its 8-bit PIC16C RISC core delivers deterministic 200 ns instruction execution, which is essential for real-time PLC signal handling and sensor multiplexing. The integrated 10-bit ADC, CCP module, and enhanced USART let a single chip interface to 4-20 mA loops, RS-485 nodes, and PWM-controlled actuators without external glue logic. The 28-SOIC package is hand-solderable for prototype runs and survives the thermal cycling of factory-floor enclosures.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics

In automotive body modules such as seat controllers, mirror adjusters and lighting drivers, the PIC16C63A-04/SO provides the deterministic response times required for LIN-bus-style networks and PWM dimming of LED arrays. Its 22 GPIO pins can directly drive relays and high-side switches via discrete MOSFETs, while the USART interfaces to the body control module. The 4 MHz clock is adequate for body-electronics loop rates of a few hundred Hz, and the SOIC package tolerates the under-hood thermal environment when paired with conformal coating.

🔧

Consumer Appliance Control

White-goods and small appliances (microwave ovens, washing machines, coffee makers) use the PIC16C63A-04/SO as the main controller because the OTP memory secures firmware against field tampering and the RISC core handles keypad scanning, seven-segment display multiplexing, and sensor readout in real time. The integrated CCP module generates the PWM signals that drive motor-speed control for fans and pumps. A typical design uses the USART for diagnostic interfaces and the ADC for temperature and water-level sensing.

🎥

Security and Alarm Systems

Alarm panels and access-control terminals benefit from the PIC16C63A-04/SO's combination of low power consumption, 22 GPIO for zone inputs and siren/keypad outputs, and USART for communication with a central station modem. The PIC16C6x instruction set is small enough to implement sliding-window sensor debouncing and PIN-code verification without an external RTC. The OTP memory prevents reverse-engineering of the alarm logic, and the SOIC package fits inside compact wall-mounted enclosures.

🔬

Instrumentation and Data Acquisition Front-End

Low-speed data-acquisition front-ends (handheld multimeters, temperature loggers, bench-top test fixtures) use the PIC16C63A-04/SO to read sensors through its 10-bit ADC and stream results over the USART to a PC or display. The 4 MHz clock is sufficient for sampling rates up to a few kilosamples per second, and the 7 KB OTP program memory holds calibration tables alongside the application code. The SOIC package drops onto prototype boards using standard 0.05 in pitch SOIC-to-DIP adapters for breadboard development.

🏭

Motor Control and PWM Drivers

Small DC and stepper motor controllers (robotic toys, vending machine dispensers, HVAC dampers) use the PIC16C63A-04/SO's CCP module to generate the PWM waveforms that drive H-bridge power stages. The 16-bit Timer1 module provides the time base for closed-loop speed control, and the USART accepts set-point commands from a master controller. Operating from a single 5 V rail, the SOIC package dissipates the modest switching losses of a 4 MHz MCU comfortably without a heatsink.

🧩

Hobbyist and Educational Embedded Platforms

Universities, hobbyists and makers use the PIC16C63A-04/SO on development boards and trainer kits because the PIC16C6x instruction set is small enough to learn in a semester, and the SOIC package is easy to hand-solder on breakout boards. The ICSP interface lets instructors flash OTP parts in-lab with a PICkit 3, and the 7 KB program memory accommodates full class projects. The part's longevity in the Microchip portfolio also makes it a stable reference design for textbook examples.

What is the operating voltage of PIC16C63A-04/SO?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO operates from a 4.0 V to 5.5 V supply rail, which is the standard commercial operating range for the PIC16C6x OTP family. According to the Microchip datasheet, VDD must remain within this window to guarantee instruction-fetch timing and ADC accuracy. Designers should add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor close to VDD and a bulk capacitor of 10 uF or larger near the supply entry point to suppress switching transients.
How much program memory does PIC16C63A-04/SO have?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO contains 7 KB (4096 x 14) of one-time-programmable (OTP) program memory, which is the standard configuration for the PIC16C63A die. OTP memory can be written only once via ICSP and cannot be erased, so this part is intended for production firmware that does not require field updates. Engineers needing re-programmability should migrate to the flash-based PIC16F73 or PIC16F876A equivalents described in this datasheet family.
What is the maximum clock speed of PIC16C63A-04/SO?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO is rated for a maximum 4 MHz external clock input, giving 200 ns per instruction cycle. This places it in the slower tier of the PIC16C63A family; the -20 suffix variant runs up to 20 MHz. For applications that require higher throughput, Microchip offers the PIC16C63A-20/SO in the same 28-SOIC package as a pin-compatible upgrade on most parameters.
Is PIC16C63A-04/SO still in production?
Microchip's product page lists the PIC16C63A family as 'Not Recommended for new designs' (NRND), meaning existing designs continue to be supported but new designs should migrate to the flash-based PIC16F73 or PIC16F876A. Stock is still available at major distributors including DigiKey, but long-term availability is constrained. Designers planning new products should target PIC16F73-I/SO instead.
What package does PIC16C63A-04/SO come in?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO is supplied in a 28-pin SOIC (Small-Outline IC) wide-body surface-mount package. The '/SO' suffix in the Microchip part-numbering convention denotes this package. The same die is also available in 28-pin SPDIP (/SP), 28-pin SSOP (/SS), and windowed ceramic DIP (/JW) for prototype and UV-erase development work.
Where can I buy PIC16C63A-04/SO?
PIC16C63A-04/SO is in stock at DigiKey (part number 273488) and listed at LCSC Electronics with pricing starting at $1.64 per unit on cut-tape reels. Mouser, Arrow, and Future Electronics also historically carry this part. Because the family is NRND, lead times may extend and pricing reflects declining supply - as of 2026-09-17, distributors quote single-unit prices around $8.40 with no formal volume discount guarantees.
What is the lead time for PIC16C63A-04/SO?
Lead time for PIC16C63A-04/SO at major franchised distributors is typically 6-10 weeks as of 2026-09-17 because Microchip has marked the family NRND. Distributor stock varies - LCSC and Nantian both report in-stock inventory in small reels, while DigiKey quotes factory lead-time for higher volumes. Buyers should confirm current stock with the distributor before placing volume orders, and consider qualifying the PIC16F73-I/SO as a long-term alternative.
PIC16C63A-04/SO vs PIC16F73-I/SO - which should I choose?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO uses OTP memory and runs at 4 MHz, while the PIC16F73-I/SO uses flash memory (reprogrammable) and supports up to 20 MHz with industrial temperature grade. The PIC16F73 is the recommended modern migration path for new designs because it retains the same 28-SOIC pinout, same peripheral set, and adds in-system reprogrammability. Choose PIC16C63A-04/SO only when you have legacy firmware already committed to OTP, or when unit cost in very high volumes outweighs the flash benefit.
Can PIC16F73-I/SO replace PIC16C63A-04/SO directly?
Yes, the PIC16F73-I/SO is the closest drop-in replacement for PIC16C63A-04/SO in the 28-SOIC package. Both share the same pinout, peripheral set (USART, CCP, 10-bit ADC), and 7 KB program-memory capacity. The main behavioral differences are: flash vs OTP memory (F73 is in-system reprogrammable), maximum clock 20 MHz vs 4 MHz, and slightly different configuration fuse names. A code recompile with the new header file is normally the only firmware-side change required.
Where do I download the PIC16C63A-04/SO datasheet?
The official PIC16C63A-04/SO datasheet is available as a PDF on the Microchip website (PIC16C63A/65B/73B/74B datasheet, document covering the family). Microchip's documentation portal at microchip.com hosts the latest revision; AllDatasheet and Alldatasheet.com also mirror the historical version. The document covers electrical characteristics, instruction set, peripheral registers, programming specifications and DC/AC timing diagrams needed for board-level design.
What is the pinout of PIC16C63A-04/SO?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO 28-SOIC pinout assigns: pin 1 to MCLR#/VPP, pins 2-7 to PORTA (RA0-RA5), pin 8 to VSS, pins 9-10 to OSC1/OSC2, pins 11-18 to PORTB (RB0-RB7), pins 19-22 and 27-28 to PORTC (RC0-RC3, RC6-RC7), pin 26 to RC4/SDI/SDA, pin 25 to RC5/SDO, pin 24 to RC3/CCP1, and pin 20 to VDD. Always confirm against the manufacturer datasheet before laying out a PCB because some PIC16C6x variants assign these pins differently.
How does PIC16C63A-04/SO differ from PIC16C63-04/SO?
The PIC16C63A is a die-revision upgrade over the original PIC16C63 with enhanced USART (variable baud-rate generator) and improved ADC performance, but both share the same 28-SOIC pinout and instruction set. Firmware written for the PIC16C63 generally runs on the PIC16C63A after a header-file update. For new designs, prefer the 'A' revision as the original PIC16C63 has been obsolete for many years.
Is PIC16C63A-04/SO suitable for new product designs in 2026?
PIC16C63A-04/SO is not recommended for new designs in 2026. Microchip has designated the PIC16C63A family NRND, meaning future discontinuation is likely. The PIC16F73-I/SO is the official migration path with the same 28-SOIC footprint but adds flash memory, higher clock speed and active new-product status. Existing production designs that rely on PIC16C63A-04/SO should maintain safety stock and qualify a second source such as the PIC16F73-I/SO.
What tools can program the PIC16C63A-04/SO?
The PIC16C63A-04/SO is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE and the MPLAB IPE programming environment. Hardware programmers include the MPLAB PM3 universal programmer, PICkit 3, PICkit 4, and the MPLAB ICD 3 / ICD 4 for in-circuit serial programming (ICSP). Third-party programmers such as the Elnec BeeProg also support the device. The OTP memory requires high-voltage VPP on the MCLR pin during programming, applied automatically by all listed programmers.
What is the price of PIC16C63A-04/SO?
As of 2026-09-17, the PIC16C63A-04/SO lists at $8.40 for single units and approximately $5.75 per unit at 1000-piece reels, based on DigiKey distributor data. LCSC Electronics quotes a lower entry price of $1.64, likely on cut-tape small-quantity reels. The wider price spread reflects NRND status and uneven distributor stock - always request a formal quote for production volumes rather than relying on spot pricing.

Справочные инженерные данные для PIC16C63A-04/SO — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose PIC16C63A-04/SO when you need a 4 MHz 8-bit OTP MCU in a 28-SOIC package for legacy or production-locked designs where firmware IP protection outweighs field-upgrade convenience. Migrate to PIC16F73-I/SO for new designs because flash memory is reprogrammable, the temperature grade is industrial, and the part is in active production rather than NRND. Pick PIC16C63A-04E/SO or PIC16C63A-04I/SO if you must stay within the OTP family but need wider temperature range. Use PIC16C63A-20/SO if your application requires the higher 20 MHz clock and you can keep the same OTP programming flow.

  • Industrial temperature grade with active new-design status (против PIC16C63A-04I/SO (NRND))

Заметки по проектированию

Estimated: at VDD=5.0 V, 4 MHz clock, all peripherals disabled, the PIC16C63A-04/SO draws approximately 2 mA active and 1 uA in SLEEP. Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 20) and a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board supply entry. The MCLR#/VPP pin (pin 1) must be pulled to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor; do not leave it floating because noise on MCLR# can cause spurious resets.

The 28-SOIC package has 1.27 mm pin pitch; route power traces with at least 0.2 mm width to the VDD/VSS pins and provide a ground pour under the IC to reduce EMI. Keep the OSC1/OSC2 traces short (under 10 mm) and surround them with a ground guard ring to attenuate clock harmonics. For ICSP programming, expose the RB6/PGC and RB7/PGD pins to a 5-pin header (plus MCLR#, VDD, VSS) so production boards can be programmed without removing the MCU.

Critical: PIC16C63A-04/SO uses OTP (one-time-programmable) memory - any code bug or misconfiguration word becomes permanent after programming. Always program at least two engineering samples and validate firmware before committing to production runs. Configuration word settings (oscillator mode, watchdog enable, code protection) cannot be reversed on the same part, so a wrong code-protect bit will brick the device. Use the windowed ceramic DIP variant PIC16C63A-04/JW during development to allow UV erasure.

When using the USART in RS-232 or RS-485 mode, add a 100 ohm series resistor at the MCU TX pin to dampen reflections on cables longer than 0.5 m. The enhanced USART on the PIC16C63A supports baud rates up to several hundred kbps at 4 MHz clock; if you need higher baud rates, consider the -20 or PIC16F73 variants. For SPI communication, ensure the SCK signal has a clean rise/fall time - if the slave device is far from the MCU, use a 10 kohm pull-up on MISO to prevent floating during bus idle.
