ATMEGA88-20MI Tóm tắt

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA88-20MI is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller combining 8 KB of ISP Flash memory with read-while-write capability, 1 KB SRAM, 512 B EEPROM, and 23 general-purpose I/O lines, delivered in a 32-pad VQFN (5x5 mm) package rated for the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. It executes up to 20 MIPS at 20 MHz and operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals such as timers and communication interfaces. Within the embedded-systems hierarchy, an 8-bit RISC MCU like the ATmega88 family sits below 32-bit MCUs and application processors, making it the workhorse of cost-sensitive, low-power control tasks in the power management and embedded control stack.

Key features include an advanced RISC architecture with 131 powerful instructions, most executable in a single clock cycle; 32 general-purpose 8-bit working registers; three flexible timer/counters with compare modes; and in-system self-programmable Flash. Peripherals include a serial programmable USART, byte-oriented Two-Wire Interface (TWI/I2C), SPI serial interface, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, an analog comparator, and internal calibrated RC oscillator options.

Technical depth: the AVR Harvard architecture fetches instructions and data over separate buses, sustaining one MIPS per MHz. debugWIRE provides on-chip debugging over the RESET line with a single wire, and the picoPower techniques reduce active and sleep current. Brown-out detection, internal/external interrupt sources, and a watchdog timer round out robust-system features.

Typical applications include industrial control systems, robotics, sensor nodes, HVAC and appliance control, and battery-powered instrumentation where 5 V operation, 10-bit ADC sampling, and low cost matter. The 32-VQFN 5x5 mm footprint suits compact two-layer PCBs.

Design consideration: at 20 MHz and 5 V the device meets its timing window only above 4.5 V; below 4.5 V the maximum clock must be derated per the datasheet frequency-voltage curve.

This page synthesizes distributor sourcing data, drop-in alternatives within the same footprint, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet.

ATMEGA88-20MI phù hợp cho 6 Áp dụngs: Industrial Control Systems, Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, HVAC and Appliance Control, Hobby and Arduino-Compatible Boards, Motor Control and Robotics, Automotive Auxiliary Electronics.

🏭

Industrial Control Systems

The ATMEGA88-20MI fits industrial control nodes because its -40C to +85C industrial rating, 20 MIPS throughput, and watchdog plus brown-out detection deliver dependable operation in electrically noisy factory environments. Its 8-channel 10-bit ADC digitizes analog sensor inputs such as potentiometers and current shunts directly, while the USART and SPI handle HMI and PLC communication. In a typical PLC I/O module the MCU runs at 16 MHz from a 5 V rail, scans digital inputs at 1 kHz, and drives relay outputs through GPIO with transistor buffers. The 1 KB SRAM supports state machines and small PID loops without an RTOS, keeping software simple and deterministic. Compared to unqualified commercial-grade parts, the MI temperature grade prevents field failures in unheated cabinets.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The ATmega88 family's power-down and power-save sleep modes, combined with wakeup on external interrupt or watchdog timer, make the ATMEGA88-20MI effective for battery-operated telemetry where the MCU sleeps most of the time. A 3 V coin cell or two AA cells directly power the 1.8 V to 5.5 V input range, eliminating an LDO in minimal designs. The 10-bit ADC samples temperature, humidity, or light sensors through the internal reference, and results are transmitted over TWI to a radio module or over USART to a GSM modem. Duty-cycling at one wake-up per minute with 1 ms of active time per wake reduces average current to microamp levels; selecting the ATMEGA88PA-MU variant lowers this further with its picoPower silicon and optimized brown-out detector consumption.

🔧

HVAC and Appliance Control

White-goods and HVAC controller boards use the ATMEGA88-20MI because it consolidates keypad scanning, display driving, NTC temperature reading, and AC relay control in a single 5 V-tolerant 8-bit MCU. The three timer/counters generate PWM for blower speed control and phase-angle dimming while the 10-bit ADC reads thermistors with the internal 2.56 V reference. The 32-pad 5x5 mm VQFN fits low-cost single-board layouts, and the industrial temperature grade survives condensing, high-heat appliance interiors when combined with conformal coating. Firmware typically implements a super-loop scanning at 100 Hz with watchdog protection, storing calibration in the 512 B EEPROM. debugWIRE through the RESET pin allows in-cabinet firmware updates during production line programming with just an Atmel-ICE and one wire.

📱

Hobby and Arduino-Compatible Boards

The ATmega88 is directly supported by Arduino-compatible core packages such as the MiniCore and MegaCore hardware packages, so the ATMEGA88-20MI suits custom, cost-optimized boards that reuse the enormous AVR open-source ecosystem: avr-gcc, avrdude, USBasp bootloaders, and thousands of libraries. Its 8 KB Flash accommodates compact sketches with sensor and serial libraries after disabling the bootloader, and the 32-VQFN 5x5 mm package permits hand-placement with a hot plate or hot-air rework. Designers often clock it at the internal 8 MHz RC oscillator to eliminate the crystal and its two I/O pins (PB6/PB7), freeing them as GPIO. Educational and prototyping boards benefit from debugWIRE debugging, which requires no extra debug pins beyond the shared RESET line.

🤖

Motor Control and Robotics

Small robot platforms use the ATMEGA88-20MI as the main controller because the 16-bit Timer 1 generates dual PWM channels for H-bridge speed control while Timer 0 services quadrature encoder counting on pin-change interrupts. The 20 MIPS budget at 20 MHz executes PID velocity loops at 1 kHz alongside sensor fusion for line-following or obstacle avoidance, all within the 1 KB SRAM. The 5 V GPIO directly drives logic-level MOSFET gate drivers such as driver ICs through the SPI or GPIO, and the analog comparator supports fast over-current shutdown when the ADC is busy. Robustness features matter here: the watchdog recovers from brown-out dips when motors stall, and the industrial rating covers outdoor chassis temperatures far beyond office ranges.

🚗

Automotive Auxiliary Electronics

In 12 V automotive auxiliary modules such as seat-position memories, lighting sequencers, and aftermarket accessory controllers, the ATMEGA88-20MI's industrial -40C to +85C rating, brown-out detector, and 5 V tolerance align with typical module requirements when fed from a clamped and regulated 5 V rail. The 512 B EEPROM stores calibration and learned positions across key-off cycles, while the TWI interface talks to fan controllers and EEPROM-expandable peripherals. Careful design is required: this part is not AEC-Q100 qualified, so use is limited to non-safety auxiliary functions, with load-dump clamping handled by upstream TVS diodes and a pre-regulator. The 8-channel ADC reads analog position feedback from potentiometers, and PWM outputs drive LED indicators with visible dimming curves at 200 Hz.

What is the ATMEGA88-20MI and what are its key specifications?
The ATMEGA88-20MI is a Microchip (Atmel) 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8 KB ISP Flash, 1 KB SRAM, 512 B EEPROM, 23 GPIO lines, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, and USART/SPI/TWI interfaces. It runs up to 20 MHz (20 MIPS), operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V, and comes in a 32-VQFN 5x5 mm package rated -40C to +85C, per the Microchip ATmega88 product page and the manufacturer datasheet.
What is the operating voltage range of ATMEGA88-20MI?
The ATMEGA88-20MI operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V according to the Atmel/Microchip datasheet. Note the frequency-voltage derating rule: maximum safe clock scales with supply voltage, so 20 MHz operation is specified for 4.5 V to 5.5 V, while lower voltages (for example 3.3 V) require a reduced clock frequency such as 8-16 MHz for guaranteed timing.
What is the difference between ATMEGA88-20MI and ATMEGA88-20MU?
The only difference is the temperature grade: the ATMEGA88-20MI is the industrial-grade part (-40C to +85C), while the ATMEGA88-20MU suffix as listed in distributor comparisons carries the standard range rating. Both are pin-compatible 8 KB Flash / 20 MHz AVR MCUs in the same 32-VQFN 5x5 mm MLF package, so footprint and firmware are unchanged between the two.
Is ATMEGA88-20MI pin-compatible with ATMEGA48 and ATmega168?
Yes. The ATmega48, ATmega88, and ATmega168 family members share the same 32-pin VQFN (MLF) pinout, so ATMEGA48xx-MU and ATMEGA168-20MU devices are drop-in footprint-compatible. Per Microchip application note AVR094 (written for the ATmega8-to-ATmega88 move), the family is pin compatible with a very similar feature set; note that Flash/RAM sizes and some register addresses differ, so firmware must be recompiled.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA88-20MI?
The best drop-in replacement is the pin-compatible ATMEGA88-20MU in the same 32-VQFN 5x5 mm package (check temperature grading for your application), or the newer picoPower ATMEGA88PA-MU, which is pin-compatible with improved low-power performance and extended voltage specifications. Both are Microchip same-family parts sourced from the manufacturer's family datasheet; verify register-level compatibility with your firmware toolchain.
Is ATMEGA88-20MI RoHS compliant?
Modern Microchip ATmega88 VQFN parts in suffix M packages are RoHS-compliant lead-free devices, but the authoritative status for the exact suffix ATMEGA88-20MI should be confirmed on the Microchip product page or the DigiKey product listing before production ordering. Do not assume compliance from the suffix alone; distributor compliance columns on the DigiKey ATMEGA88-20MI page (product 660529) are the definitive source.
How much Flash, SRAM and EEPROM does the ATMEGA88-20MI have?
According to the Microchip ATmega88 product page, the device has 8 KB of ISP Flash with read-while-write support, 1 KB of SRAM, and 512 B of EEPROM. Flash is organized for in-system self-programming, enabling field firmware updates through the bootloader or SPI programmer, and EEPROM retains calibration data across power cycles.
Where to buy ATMEGA88-20MI online and what is the price?
The ATMEGA88-20MI is stocked by distributors including DigiKey (product 660529, ships today per the listing) and is quoted by global traders such as AIChipLink. Pricing as of 2026-09-19 is approximately $2.10 at qty 1, falling to roughly $1.15 at qty 1000 on this page; always request a live quote because AVR pricing fluctuates with lead times. Compare at least two distributors before committing volume.
What is the lead time and stock situation for ATMEGA88-20MI?

Typical Microchip factory lead times for this mature AVR family range from a few weeks to over 20 weeks during allocation periods. As of 2026-09-19, verify real-time inventory on DigiKey, Octopart, or Mouser before scheduling production builds.
What tools can program and debug the ATMEGA88-20MI?
The ATMEGA88-20MI is supported by Microchip's AVR toolchain: MPLAB X IDE with the XC8 compiler, Atmel Studio lineage tools, AVRISP mkII and Atmel-ICE programmers, and debugWIRE on-chip debugging through the RESET pin using Atmel-ICE. Open-source tools including avr-gcc, avrdude, and USBasp programmers also fully support the ATmega88, per the Microchip development tools documentation.
Where can I download the ATMEGA88-20MI datasheet PDF?
The official ATmega88 datasheet PDF is available from the Microchip product page at microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega88, and mirrored copies are indexed on Octopart and Alldatasheet (the Atmel document is a 374-page complete datasheet covering the 8 KB In-System Programmable Flash family). Always download from microchip.com to guarantee you have the current revision with correct electrical specifications.
Where can I find the ATMEGA88-20MI pinout?
The complete pinout is in the pin configuration section of the manufacturer datasheet. On the 32-pad VQFN (5x5 mm) package, pin 1 is PD3, with power at pins 4/6 (VCC), 3/5/21 (GND), AVCC at pin 18, AREF at pin 20, ADC6/ADC7 at pins 19/22, XTAL1/XTAL2 at pins 7/8, and RESET (PC6) at pin 29. The pinout diagram on this page reproduces the datasheet ordering.
ATMEGA88-20MI vs ATMEGA328P - which should I choose?
Choose the ATMEGA88-20MI when 8 KB Flash and 1 KB SRAM are sufficient and cost is critical; choose the ATmega328P when you need 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM, and Arduino ecosystem compatibility. Both share the AVR architecture, similar peripherals, and related footprints, but the 328P is not pin-identical in all packages, so migration requires board review rather than a pure drop-in swap.
Is ATMEGA88-20MI suitable for battery-powered designs?
Yes, with care. The ATmega88 family includes picoPower-derived power modes: idle, ADC noise reduction, power-down, power-save, and standby, with microamp-level power-down current per the datasheet. For the lowest sleep current, select the newer ATMEGA88PA-MU variant, which is drop-in compatible and optimizes leakage and brown-out detector consumption relative to the original ATmega88 silicon.
What is a good cross-brand equivalent for ATMEGA88-20MI?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in replacement: the AVR instruction set and pinout are proprietary to Microchip, and no competitor part from ST, NXP, or others is pin-to-pin compatible in the 32-VQFN footprint. The closest functional cross-brand alternatives are 8-bit MCUs such as the PIC16F88x family or ST STM8S series, but these require PCB redesign and firmware porting. For drop-in continuity, stay within the Microchip ATmega48/88/168 family.

Hướng dẫn chọn lựa

Choose ATMEGA88-20MI when your design needs 8 KB Flash, 20 MHz operation from a 5 V rail, an industrial -40C to +85C rating, and a compact 32-VQFN 5x5 mm footprint at low unit cost. Choose ATMEGA88-20MU if your environment stays within commercial temperature limits and industrial grading is unnecessary. Choose ATMEGA88PA-MU or ATMEGA88PA-MMHR for new battery-powered designs where lower power-down current justifies the newer picoPower silicon - all are drop-in on the same PCB. Move to ATMEGA168-20MU when code size exceeds 8 KB; it is pin-compatible, so only firmware and memory maps need review. Choose ATMEGA48V-10MMU only when 4 KB Flash, 10 MHz, and 1.8 V operation suffice and cost must be minimized. There is no cross-brand drop-in: if leaving the AVR ecosystem, plan a full board and firmware redesign around PIC16F or STM8S alternatives. All in-family choices reuse identical tooling, programmers, and avr-gcc code bases.

Ghi chú thiết kế

Estimated: at 20 MHz / 5.5 V the ATmega88 active current is on the order of 10-15 mA per the datasheet active-supply curves; add 10 mA per 20 mA of GPIO sink/source within the 200 mA total device limit. Size the 5 V regulator for MCU load plus all driven loads, and decouple each VCC/AVCC pad with 100 nF ceramics placed within 2 mm of the pads. The exposed die pad must be soldered to a ground flood - it is the primary ground and thermal connection on the VQFN-32 package; unsoldered pads cause erratic brown-out resets.

Route AVCC (pin 18) to VCC through an LC filter (10 uH + 10 uF) and keep AREF (pin 20) quiet with 100 nF to ground; ADC6/ADC7 (pins 19/22) are ADC-only and must not carry digital traffic, or converter accuracy degrades beyond 1 LSB. Keep the crystal (if used at PB6/PB7) within 5 mm with 12-22 pF load capacitors and a guard ring to ground. The debugWIRE signal shares RESET (pin 29): leave room for a series resistor footprint so debugWIRE can be disabled and ISP re-enabled in production.

Respect the frequency-versus-voltage derating curve: 20 MHz is only guaranteed at 4.5 V to 5.5 V. Running 20 MHz from a 3.3 V rail causes intermittent failures that pass at room temperature and fail over temperature. Also, RSTDISBL and DWEN fuse mistakes can permanently lock out ISP programming - always prototype fuse changes with an Atmel-ICE and high-voltage recovery capability. When migrating firmware from ATmega48 or ATmega168, recompile rather than reuse binaries: register maps and interrupt vector tables differ between family members.

All 23 GPIOs support pin-change interrupts (PCINT0-23), which is convenient for encoder and keypad inputs, but enable internal pull-ups deliberately - floating inputs draw dynamic current and add EMI susceptibility. For SPI bus shared with SD cards or flash, keep traces under 10 cm at 8 MHz SCK and series-terminate the clock with 22 ohm if the board uses a two-layer stack. The USART can tolerate up to 1 Mbps at 20 MHz with 0.0% error at U2X=1, per datasheet baud-rate tables.
