MC9S08SL8MTJ Tóm tắt

The NXP Semiconductors MC9S08SL8MTJ is an 8-bit S08 microcontroller built on the S08 core, delivering up to 40 MHz of bus clock from an 8 KB flash memory program store in a 20-pin TSSOP surface-mount package. It adds an embedded slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) together with on-chip EEPROM, which shortens development time for LIN slave nodes and reduces the external component count in LIN-connected cost-sensitive equipment.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a compact processor with an 8-bit-wide data bus, normally built around a simple accumulator or register architecture rather than a pipelined 32-bit core. The S08 core belongs to the wider MCU hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> general-purpose semiconductor, and it is designed for control rather than compute, using on-chip flash for firmware, on-chip RAM for working data, and dedicated peripherals for timers, serial interfaces and analog channels. Compared with 16-bit and 32-bit parts, the S08 delivers lower cost, lower current draw and smaller code footprint for typical appliance, automotive and industrial control tasks.

Key features of the MC9S08SL8MTJ include the 8 KB (8K x 8) flash program memory with fast programming, 512 bytes of RAM, a 40 MHz maximum S08 core clock, and a slave LIN interface controller for LIN bus networking. The 20-pin TSSOP package is a standard gull-wing surface-mount footprint with 20 terminals, widely supported by automated assembly and pick-and-place lines. The part is offered in an extended automotive temperature grade, making it suitable for harsh vehicle environments.

Technically, the device combines a simple 8-bit CPU with dedicated serial and timer peripherals, so most control loops are handled by hardware rather than by firmware polling. The on-chip EEPROM allows frequently changed calibration or configuration values to be written in the field without consuming flash cycles, a common requirement in automotive body electronics and in metering equipment where serial numbers or trim data must persist across power cycles.

Typical applications include LIN slave nodes in automotive body and comfort systems, small appliance controllers, fan and pump speed controllers, battery-operated handheld instruments, sensor-hub and IO expander boards, and low-cost consumer peripherals where a 20-pin surface-mount footprint and simple LIN or serial connectivity are required.

One design consideration dominates layout planning: because the flash and RAM budgets are small, firmware must stay lean, and code size should be checked against the 8 KB program memory early in the development cycle. Decoupling close to the supply pins and correct use of the reset and oscillator pins are equally important in dense 20-pin layouts.

This page combines manufacturer and distributor information, drop-in alternatives in the same 20-TSSOP footprint, and practical design notes so engineers can shortlist the correct 8-bit MCU before starting a new PCB spin.

Ứng dụng tiêu biểu

MC9S08SL8MTJ phù hợp cho 6 Áp dụngs: Automotive LIN Slave Body-Control Nodes, Small Appliance and White-Goods Control, Battery-Powered Portable Instruments, Sensor Hub and IO Expander Boards, Motor and Pump Speed Control, Cost-Sensitive Consumer Peripherals.

🚗

Automotive LIN Slave Body-Control Nodes

The MC9S08SL8MTJ is built for LIN slave nodes because the S08SL family integrates a slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) and EEPROM directly on chip, removing the need for an external LIN transceiver-adjacent controller and shortening firmware bring-up. At 40 MHz the S08 core has ample headroom for symbol handling, diagnostics and periodic wake-up logic, while 512 bytes of RAM is sufficient for a small state machine plus LIN buffers. Placing it in the 20-TSSOP package keeps the module footprint small for door, seat, mirror or climate-control units where board area is tight. The automotive temperature grade further supports use in cabin and engine-bay-adjacent housings. The on-chip EEPROM is particularly useful for storing node configuration, serial numbers and calibration values that must survive power cycles.

🏭

Small Appliance and White-Goods Control

In a small appliance controller, the MC9S08SL8MTJ provides enough compute for motor sequencing, button and sensor handling, and simple closed-loop control while consuming very little board area in its 20-TSSOP package. The 40 MHz S08 core shortens the time to respond to user input and to run the periodic tasks typical of a washing cycle or fan controller. The 8 KB flash budget suits compact firmware with a bootloader and a small lookup table, and the embedded EEPROM is handy for storing cycle counters, calibration offsets and user settings across power cycles. Because the device is also suited to LIN-connected accessories, it can act as a slave endpoint in a network of appliances instead of a standalone controller.

🔧

Battery-Powered Portable Instruments

The MC9S08SL8MTJ suits portable, battery-operated instruments where every milliamp and every square millimetre matters. The 8-bit S08 core handles measurement sequencing and user-interface updates without the overhead of a 32-bit processor, and the 512-byte RAM footprint limits how much buffering a design can allocate, which keeps the firmware disciplined and the power budget predictable. In the 20-TSSOP package the device leaves room for a sensor front end, a display driver and a coin-cell or small Li-ion supply section on the same board. The on-chip EEPROM provides non-volatile storage for calibration and logged events, while the slave LIN controller allows the instrument to be daisy-chained onto an LIN network for service access or configuration from a host node.

🧩

Sensor Hub and IO Expander Boards

Used as a sensor hub or IO expander, the MC9S08SL8MTJ aggregates inputs from several low-bandwidth sensors and reports them upward over a serial link. The 8 KB flash is sufficient for a hub firmware that mainly performs sampling scheduling, filtering and data formatting, and the 40 MHz clock gives comfortable headroom for running the sensor service routines alongside the serial task. Because the device sits on a small 20-TSSOP footprint, it can be placed on a compact daughterboard or integrated behind a connector in a larger assembly. Its slave LIN capability gives the hub a standard automotive-style networking option, and the EEPROM can hold per-channel trim and calibration data that the manufacturing line writes at end-of-test.

⚡

Motor and Pump Speed Control

The MC9S08SL8MTJ is well suited to small brushed-motor and pump speed control where a dedicated motor driver IC would be excessive. The 40 MHz S08 core can run the commutation or PWM duty-cycle loop plus a supervisory task and a LIN status report within the 8 KB flash budget, and the 512-byte RAM is adequate for a single control loop with a small history buffer. Using the 20-TSSOP package alongside a discrete MOSFET stage keeps the control section compact on a crowded pump or fan board. In a vehicle or appliance context the LIN slave controller lets the speed setpoint arrive over the bus, removing local buttons and reducing wiring, and the EEPROM stores duty calibration and speed-curve coefficients that persist across power cycles.

📱

Cost-Sensitive Consumer Peripherals

The MC9S08SL8MTJ fits cost-sensitive consumer peripherals such as small USB or serial dongles, LED controllers, timers and compact keypads where a 32-bit MCU would be unjustified. The 8-bit S08 core executes the protocol and UI logic at 40 MHz while keeping the die and package cost down, and the 20-TSSOP footprint integrates easily into a dense consumer board. The embedded EEPROM is a practical asset for storing device identity, configuration profiles or usage counters without consuming scarce flash, and the slave LIN controller provides a networking option in designs that also bridge to vehicle or industrial LIN networks. Key design checks are the 8 KB program-memory limit and the modest 512-byte RAM budget, both of which should be validated against the final firmware image before release.

What is the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is an 8-bit microcontroller from NXP Semiconductors built on the S08 core, with 8 KB of flash memory, 512 bytes of RAM, a maximum clock of 40 MHz, and an embedded slave LIN interface controller, supplied in a 20-pin TSSOP package. According to the NXP product page, the S08EL and S08SL families were created with an embedded slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) and EEPROM specifically to raise LIN slave performance and shorten development time, so the MC9S08SL8MTJ is positioned as a low-cost, LIN-capable node controller for automotive and cost-sensitive embedded products.
How much flash memory and RAM does the MC9S08SL8MTJ have?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ provides 8 KB (8K x 8) of flash program memory and 512 bytes of on-chip RAM. The NXP product information lists 8 KB flash with 512 B RAM, while distributor listings describe the part as an 8-bit MCU with 8KB Flash. That 512-byte RAM budget is the main constraint when planning firmware: it suits small state machines, LIN node handling and simple supervisory tasks, but stack depth and buffer sizes must be kept conservative because there is no external memory bus on this part.
What is the maximum clock frequency of the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ runs at up to 40 MHz on the S08 core, as stated in both the manufacturer description and distributor catalogue entries, which describe it as an S08SL 8-bit MCU with a 40 MHz S08 core. The 40 MHz figure is the internal core/bus clock ceiling; the part is normally clocked from an internal oscillator, so the practical clock source and any external crystal or trim options should be confirmed from the pin-description and clocking sections of the NXP datasheet before finalising the board layout.
What package does the MC9S08SL8MTJ come in?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is supplied in a 20-pin TSSOP (SOP 20) surface-mount package with a gull-wing terminal form. Distributor catalog records for this exact part number list 20 terminals, package code TSSOP, rectangular package shape, and surface-mount mounting. The 20-pin TSSOP footprint keeps the board area small enough for dense automotive body modules and compact consumer appliances while remaining compatible with standard 0.65 mm pitch TSSOP assembly and inspection processes.
Does the MC9S08SL8MTJ include a LIN slave controller?
Yes, the MC9S08SL8MTJ integrates an embedded slave LIN interface controller, abbreviated SLIC, along with EEPROM. The NXP family description states that S08EL and S08SL 8-bit microcontrollers with an embedded slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) and EEPROM help to increase LIN slave performance and reduce development time. For automotive body and comfort modules, a LIN master still sits upstream on the bus, but the local node logic, timer handling and symbol storage are handled inside this MCU, minimising external hardware.
Is the MC9S08SL8MTJ suitable for automotive applications?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is listed with an automotive temperature grade, and the S08SL family combines that grade with an embedded slave LIN controller and EEPROM for LIN node designs. That combination matches automotive body electronics, comfort modules, door and seat control units, and small sensor nodes where harsh-temperature capability and LIN networking are required. For final sign-off, confirm the exact temperature limits, AEC-Q100 qualification status and any automotive PPAP documentation directly with NXP for the specific orderable part number.
Where can I download the MC9S08SL8MTJ datasheet PDF?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ datasheet and full ordering information are available from the NXP product page for this part number at https://www.nxp.com/part/MC9S08SL8MTJ, and a mirrored copy of the datasheet is hosted by Chipdig. The NXP document is the authoritative source for the pin-description table, memory map, clocking, the SLIC peripheral and the electrical characteristics. Use the NXP version for design sign-off, since it is the current manufacturer release including any errata.
Where can I find the MC9S08SL8MTJ pinout?
The pinout for the MC9S08SL8MTJ is documented in the pin-description table of the NXP datasheet for the 20-pin TSSOP package, together with the package outline drawing and pin-connection diagrams. Because the same family is offered in several package options, always match the drawing to the 20-TSSOP variant rather than the 8-pin or 32-pin siblings. Use that pin table when assigning PCB tracks, and confirm multiplexing options for the port pins before finalising a board layout.
Where can I buy the MC9S08SL8MTJ online?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is an orderable NXP Semiconductors 8-bit MCU, and XAIPART lists it with datasheet, technical detail and sourcing support. Use the Request a Quote form on this page to request current availability, lot traceability and volume pricing for the 20-TSSOP orderable part number. Because automotive-grade sourcing often depends on date-code and traceability requirements, state your required temperature grade and date-code window in the quote request for the fastest accurate response.
What is the price of the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
Pricing for the MC9S08SL8MTJ depends on quantity, date code and traceability requirements, so the current figure is best obtained through a direct quote request rather than a static figure. Submit the Request a Quote form on this page with your target quantity, package variant and any AEC-Q100 or date-code requirements, and the current price and lead time will be confirmed for your specific line items. This keeps the quote aligned with live inventory for this automotive-grade 20-TSSOP MCU.
What is the lead time for the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is listed as an active, orderable NXP part, and lead time depends on the quantity ordered and whether a specific automotive date code is required. Request the current lead time and allocation status through the Request a Quote form on this page, including your required date code, pack quantity and delivery schedule. For scheduled automotive production, ordering well ahead of the build date is advisable because automotive-grade material typically moves on a longer planning horizon than the standard commercial-temperature variants.
MC9S08SL8MTJ vs MC9S08SH16MTJ - which is better for a LIN slave node?
Choose the MC9S08SL8MTJ when your node must act as a LIN slave, because the S08SL family integrates the slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) with EEPROM, whereas the MC9S08SH16MTJ belongs to the S08SH family and is generally chosen for serial/SPI control tasks with more flash. The MC9S08SH16MTJ offers 16 KB of flash versus 8 KB on the MC9S08SL8MTJ, so it wins on firmware headroom, but the LIN slave hardware is the deciding factor for automotive body and comfort nodes.
What is the difference between the MC9S08SL8MTJ and the MC9S08SL16MTJ?
The two parts share the same S08SL family, the same 8-bit S08 core and the same 20-pin TSSOP package, but they differ in program memory: the MC9S08SL8MTJ carries 8 KB of flash while the MC9S08SL16MTJ carries 16 KB. Both include the embedded slave LIN interface controller and EEPROM. Choose the MC9S08SL16MTJ when the firmware image, bootloader or data logging will exceed 8 KB, and stay with the MC9S08SL8MTJ to conserve cost and board area when 8 KB is sufficient.
When should I choose the MC9S08SL8MTJ over the MC9S08SH8MTJ?
Choose the MC9S08SL8MTJ when the node must communicate on a LIN bus, since the S08SL family adds the embedded slave LIN interface controller and EEPROM to the 8-bit S08 core. Choose the MC9S08SH8MTJ only when a plain serial or SPI control task does not need LIN support and you want the lowest-cost member of the 8 KB, 40 MHz S08 family. Both are 8-bit parts with 40 MHz capability in a 20-pin TSSOP footprint, so the peripheral set, not the package, drives the decision.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
The closest drop-in replacements for the MC9S08SL8MTJ are the same-family NXP 20-TSSOP devices with the same S08 core and 40 MHz capability, such as the MC9S08SL16MTJ with 16 KB of flash, the MC9S08SL8CTJ with the commercial temperature grade, and the MC9S08SH8MTJ from the S08SH family. All share the 20-pin TSSOP footprint, but any substitution must be checked against the pin-description table because peripheral mixes and temperature grades differ between family members.
Can the MC9S08SL16MTJ replace the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
Yes, the MC9S08SL16MTJ can replace the MC9S08SL8MTJ as a drop-in upgrade because both are S08SL-family parts in the 20-pin TSSOP package with the same S08 core, 40 MHz clock ceiling and integrated slave LIN controller. The only meaningful differences are the larger 8 KB-to-16 KB flash budget and temperature-grade ordering options. Because a larger flash device can present a different flash-size configuration to the programmer, confirm the device configuration settings in the development toolchain after swapping parts.
What are the key specifications of the MC9S08SL8MTJ that engineers should know?
The MC9S08SL8MTJ is an 8-bit S08-core microcontroller with 8 KB (8K x 8) flash, 512 bytes of RAM, a 40 MHz maximum clock, an embedded slave LIN interface controller (SLIC) with EEPROM, and a 20-pin TSSOP surface-mount package rated to an automotive temperature grade. The combination of a small 8-bit core, an on-chip LIN slave peripheral and a 20-pin footprint makes it a strong fit for cost-sensitive automotive body modules and compact serial control nodes where board area and unit cost dominate the design.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for the MC9S08SL8MTJ?
The closest cross-brand option is the STMicroelectronics STM8L051 low-power 8-bit family, which offers comparable ultra-low-power 8-bit performance and LIN connectivity in small packages. However, the STM8L051F3P6 that appears in comparison listings is an 8-pin device, so it is not pin-to-pin compatible with the 20-pin TSSOP MC9S08SL8MTJ and cannot be treated as a drop-in replacement. Moving to ST or another vendor therefore means a footprint change and firmware rework rather than a component substitution.
Is the MC9S08SL8MTJ the same as the MC9S08SL8CTJ?
No, the MC9S08SL8MTJ and the MC9S08SL8CTJ share the same S08SL 8-bit core, 8 KB flash, 512-byte RAM class of design and the same 20-pin TSSOP footprint, but they differ in ordering options, with the MTJ suffix denoting the extended automotive temperature grade and the CTJ suffix the commercial-temperature variant. They are therefore pin-compatible and often used interchangeably in the same layout, but the temperature rating must be checked against your ambient requirements before substituting one for the other.
What can replace the MC9S08SL8MTJ in an existing design?
An existing 20-TSSOP design built around the MC9S08SL8MTJ can be reworked around the MC9S08SL16MTJ, the MC9S08SL8CTJ, the MC9S08SH8MTJ or the MC9S08SH16MTJ, all NXP 20-pin TSSOP members with an 8-bit S08 core and 40 MHz capability. The critical checks are the slave LIN controller requirement, the flash size needed by the firmware, the temperature grade and the pin-description table in the datasheet. A cross-brand move to an ST STM8L051 part requires a footprint change and firmware rework.

Dữ liệu tham khảo kỹ thuật cho MC9S08SL8MTJ — so sánh, hướng dẫn thiết kế và thông tin tuân thủ.

Hướng dẫn chọn lựa

Choose the MC9S08SL8MTJ when your design is an 8-bit control node that must sit on a LIN bus, needs only modest firmware, and has to survive automotive thermal conditions in a small 20-pin footprint. Choose the MC9S08SL16MTJ when the firmware image, bootloader or data logging will exceed 8 KB, since the package, core, 40 MHz clock and slave LIN controller are unchanged. Choose the MC9S08SL8CTJ only when ambient conditions are within the commercial temperature range, as it offers the same silicon but a narrower temperature grade. Choose an S08SH-family device such as the MC9S08SH8MTJ or MC9S08SH16MTJ for serial/SPI control tasks that do not need the integrated slave LIN controller, accepting that the peripheral set differs. Moving to a non-NXP supplier such as the STM8L051 series means a different package, different peripherals and firmware rework rather than a drop-in substitution.

Ghi chú thiết kế

The MC9S08SL8MTJ is a 20-TSSOP device with only a few supply and ground pins, so supply routing determines noise behaviour on the whole board. Decouple each supply pin locally with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within a few millimetres of the pin, and back it up with a bulk capacitor sized for the switching load of the board. Keep the analog and digital return paths converged at a single point near the device so that current from the LIN transceiver and any relay or motor stage does not flow through the MCU ground reference.

The most common failure with an 8 KB flash 8-bit MCU is discovering late that the firmware image, including bootloader, does not fit. The MC9S08SL8MTJ offers 8 KB of flash and 512 bytes of RAM, so check the compiled map file against these limits during early development rather than at release. If the image is close to the limit, move to the MC9S08SL16MTJ, which keeps the same 20-TSSOP footprint and the same slave LIN controller while doubling program memory.

Because the same S08 family is offered in 8-pin, 16-pin, 20-pin and 32-pin packages, always verify the pin-description table in the NXP datasheet against the 20-TSSOP outline before committing copper. The 20-pin TSSOP has limited escape routing, so assign the two most timing- or noise-sensitive functions to pins closest to the ground and supply connections, and keep the LIN slave lines away from switching nodes. When a LIN transceiver is used on the board, route the transceiver as close to the connector as practical and keep the MCU pins short and quiet.

Substituting a same-footprint part is only safe when the suffix meaning is respected. The MTJ ordering option of the MC9S08SL8MTJ carries the automotive temperature grade, whereas the CTJ option is the commercial-temperature variant, so the two are pin-compatible but not temperature-equivalent. Similarly, moving to an S08SH-family part such as the MC9S08SH8MTJ or MC9S08SH16MTJ removes the integrated slave LIN controller. Treat every cross-part move as a firmware and hardware re-check, not a label swap.
