The Microchip Technology PIC16F1787T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, featuring 14KB Flash program memory (8K x 14 words), 1KB RAM, and 256B EEPROM in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) package with exposed thermal pad. It executes instructions at 32 MHz, integrates a 12-bit ADC, an 8-bit DAC, programmable switch-mode controller (PSMC) peripherals, and on-chip operational amplifiers, making it suitable for mixed-signal embedded designs.

The PIC16F1787 is part of Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit MCU lineup, where PIC® refers to the Peripheral Interface Controller architecture originally developed by General Instrument and refined by Microchip. This PIC® XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) family member offers multiple low-power sleep options such as Sleep with peripherals running, ultra-low-power wake, and power-on-reset brown-out reset (BOR) without the trip voltage setting, enabling battery-powered designs that must remain in standby for extended periods. The 16F designation denotes a Flash-based mid-range core; the wider PIC taxonomy flows from 8-bit PIC -> mid-range MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor.

Key features of this variant include the T suffix (Tape and Reel packaging), I (Industrial) temperature range from -40C to +85C, and ML (44-lead QFN) footprint. On-chip peripherals (Peripherals include Brown-out Detect/Reset, POR, PWM, WDT) provide additional capabilities. Connectivity options include I2C, SPI, and UART, supporting communication with external sensors, displays, and companion MCUs. The combination of 12-bit ADC precision and 8-bit DAC enables closed-loop analog control without external converter ICs.

The PIC16F1787T-I/ML targets applications such as industrial sensor conditioning, LED lighting controllers with PSMC, motor-control subsystems, battery-powered instrumentation, and consumer appliances. Its 44-pin QFN exposed-pad package supports compact PCB layouts while the PSMC and op-amp integration reduce BOM cost and board area in switch-mode power and sensor-interface products.

Designers should note that this part is functionally identical to the PIC16F1787-I/ML (tray packaging), differing only in the tape-and-reel carrier format. When designing firmware, use MPLAB X IDE and the XC8 compiler to ensure full peripheral library support.

Ghi chú thiết kế

The PIC16F1787T-I/ML operates from a single 1.9V-3.6V VDD supply. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (the part has multiple VDD pins in the 44-QFN package), and add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the supply entry point. According to Microchip's datasheet, the PIC® XLP™ sleep current is below 50 nA in deep-sleep modes, enabling battery-powered designs to achieve multi-year standby life on a single coin cell. Keep analog VDD routing short and isolated from digital switching currents to minimize ADC noise coupling.

The 44-QFN (8x8 mm) package has an exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to the PCB ground plane for both thermal dissipation and electrical grounding. Per Microchip's package guidelines, the exposed pad requires at least 4 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill) on a 1 mm pitch to the inner ground layer. Keep analog and digital ground returns separated at the IC and join them at a single point under the exposed pad. Place the 32 kHz crystal (if used) within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins and route the traces over a continuous ground plane to minimize EMI coupling from PSMC switching nodes.

When migrating firmware from PIC16F1787-I/ML (tray) to PIC16F1787T-I/ML (tape & reel), verify that the ICSP programming pins (RBICSVCITPGCLK and RBICSVCITPGDAT) are accessible - some 44-QFN boards cover these pins with components on the reel-packaged variant's footprint. According to Microchip, the PSMC peripheral requires careful dead-time control to prevent MOSFET shoot-over; never set the dead-time to zero. Also note that the 12-bit ADC requires a minimum acquisition time based on source impedance; a 10 kohm source impedance requires at least 1.5 us acquisition, so do not exceed this in high-impedance signal chains.

Route the PSMC output traces (PHSMC channels) with short, wide traces (at least 0.5 mm width per amp) directly to the MOSFET gates. Keep the switching node loop area minimal by placing input capacitors, MOSFETs, and the PSMC output pins in a tight loop. Per Microchip's PIC® XLP™ design guides, avoid routing analog signals (ADC inputs, op-amp outputs) parallel to or under the PSMC switching traces; this couples switching noise into analog measurements. Add ground-fill on inner layers to provide low-impedance return paths.

The PIC16F1787T-I/ML's 12-bit ADC is sensitive to switching-noise coupling. According to Microchip's PIC16F1787 datasheet, sample ADC inputs at quiet moments in the firmware cycle (e.g., after PSMC pulse completion) to avoid noise on the conversion result. Use the integrated op-amps as anti-aliasing filters in front of the ADC input pins, and keep analog signal traces over a continuous ground plane. For noisy environments, add an RC low-pass filter (typically 1 kohm + 100 pF) at the ADC input pin.
