PIC16LF15354-E/ML Tóm tắt

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF15354-E/ML is an 8-bit PIC16 microcontroller built on the enhanced mid-range core, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of Flash program memory, 512 bytes of SRAM and 224 bytes of data EEPROM. Housed in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package with industrial temperature range of -40C to +125C, this "LF" variant supports an extended low-voltage operating range that starts at 1.8V while running the core up to 32MHz.

An MCU (Microcontroller Unit) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and configurable peripherals such as timers, ADC, communication interfaces and I/O. The PIC16LF15354 sits in Microchip's PIC16 XLP family - a low-power 8-bit line positioned between simple PIC10/12 parts and higher-end PIC18/dsPIC devices. Its product type hypernyms are: MCU -> microcontroller -> 8-bit microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor. The XLP (eXtreme Low Power) designation reflects deep-sleep currents in the nA range and fast wake-up times, which is the key differentiator versus older PIC16F parts.

Key features include four 10-bit PWM outputs, a hardware comparator, a 5-bit/10-bit DAC, a 10-bit ADC with up to 25 analog channels, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), four Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), two EUSART peripherals, plus MSSP-based SPI and I2C. The device also integrates a Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), zero-cross detection, and on-chip debug support via MPLAB ICD. These Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) allow many control tasks to run without CPU intervention, further reducing average power.

Internally, the PIC16LF15354 uses a 14-bit instruction word modified Harvard architecture with a 32kHz to 32MHz internal oscillator, allowing software-selectable clock sources between INTOSC and an external crystal. The 28-QFN package exposes 25 I/O pins with high-current sink/source capability, programmable weak pull-ups, interrupt-on-change, and peripheral pin select (PPS) remapping for flexible PCB routing.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, e-Locks, touch/proximity user interfaces, white-goods and small appliance control, and battery-powered metering. Designers select the PIC16LF15354-E/ML when energy budget and BOM cost dominate over raw CPU throughput.

When designing with this part, use MPLAB X IDE plus the XC8 compiler; place a 0.1uF decoupling capacitor within 3mm of every VDD pin and provide a bulk capacitor on the input rail. Always configure the PPS registers before assigning peripheral signals to physical pins.

Ứng dụng tiêu biểu

PIC16LF15354-E/ML phù hợp cho 7 Áp dụngs: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes, Electronic Locks and Access Control, Small Appliance and White-Goods Control, Touch/Proximity and HMI Front-Ends, Industrial Sensor Transmitters and Metering, Remote Control and Smart-Home Peripherals, Automotive Interior Sub-Modules (Non-Safety).

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC16LF15354-E/ML fits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes where sleep current dominates battery life. Its XLP silicon idles in the nA range and wakes in microseconds, while the 1.8V-3.6V VDD range runs directly from a Li-coin or 2xAA cells without a boost converter. With four CLCs the device can scan a sensor autonomously, drive the CWG, and only wake the CPU when the threshold trips. This combination can extend a CR2032 node lifetime from a few months into several years, beating older PIC16F1xx designs.

🔒

Electronic Locks and Access Control

For electronic locks the PIC16LF15354-E/ML delivers deterministic response time at 32 MHz, hardware PWM for haptic/motor feedback, and a comparator for tamper-line monitoring without waking the CPU. The 7 KB Flash fits encryption handshake state machines plus fault logging, while 224 bytes EEPROM stores calibration constants across lockouts. The 28-QFN package keeps the PCB footprint under 36 mm^2, important for inline deadbolt modules. Drop-in compatibility with PIC16F15354 means 5V-tolerant variants can be qualified on the same layout.

🏭

Small Appliance and White-Goods Control

In a washing machine, dishwasher or induction cooktop front-end, the PIC16LF15354-E/ML brings four 10-bit PWMs (for triac phase control), a high-current-drive 25-pin I/O bank, and a 10-bit ADC with up to 25 channels to read thermistor and mains-voltage sense lines. The CWG generates complementary switching with hardware dead-band, removing CPU jitter on motor drivers. Industrial -40C to +125C temperature rating covers appliance back-panel environments. Same-package PIC16F15344 / PIC16F15356 alternatives let designers tune Flash size without re-laying out.

📺

Touch/Proximity and HMI Front-Ends

Although the PIC16LF15354-E/ML lacks the mTouch CVD module of PIC16F1554, its four Configurable Logic Cells can implement simple capacitive sense with a single ADC channel and a CWG-driven excitation. At 32 MHz the device debounces, scans and refreshes an LED/HMI matrix without CPU-heavy interrupts. The 28-QFN footprint fits behind a glass panel, and the "LF" 1.8V operation runs from a coin cell when the host provides field-power. For higher-volume touch designs, validate against PIC16F1554 mTouch first.

📱

Industrial Sensor Transmitters and Metering

The PIC16LF15354-E/ML is well suited to 4-20 mA loop transmitters, gas/water meter data loggers and similar battery-isolated instruments. Its 1.8V-3.6V VDD lets it run from a single lithium primary cell, the 224-byte EEPROM stores calibration constants across 20-year deployments, and the 10-bit ADC with 25 channels conditions multiple sensor inputs simultaneously. Two EUSARTs handle local HART or MODBUS bridging, and the four CLCs implement custom timing logic that ordinarily would require a second timer IC. Drop-in PIC16F15354 variant supports 24V loop-powered 5V designs.

🧩

Remote Control and Smart-Home Peripherals

For thermostats, blind controllers and Zigbee/BLE bridges that pair with a host MCU, the PIC16LF15354-E/ML adds deterministic peripheral scheduling around an external radio. The CLCs drive the radio's timing-critical hand-shake signals while the CPU sleeps, the CWG generates complementary FET drives for motorised blinds, and the EUSART/SPI/I2C ports provide a redundant control channel. The 28-QFN (6x6 mm) keeps the bill-of-materials in the sub-USD-2 range for the wireless module.

🚗

Automotive Interior Sub-Modules (Non-Safety)

The PIC16LF15354-E/ML handles interior LED lighting, ambient-light controllers, HVAC flaps and seat actuators in non-safety automotive modules. Up to 25 I/Os with high-current drive simplify direct MOSFET connections, the four PWMs generate millions of colour-mixing steps for RGB interior strips, and the 1.8-3.6V LF range shares a common rail with most automotive PMICs. Designers specify the "E" industrial grade for cabin modules; for safety-critical ECUs they must upgrade to AEC-Q100-qualified PIC16F1xxx parts which Microchip publishes separately.

Yes, the PIC16F15354-E/ML is electrically drop-in compatible with the PIC16LF15354-E/ML because both share the same 28-QFN pinout, peripheral set and Flash size. The only true difference is the wider 1.8V-5.5V VDD range of the "F" part - you lose the LF 1.8V low-voltage operation but gain simpler 5V-tolerance, so most designs accept either silicon. For an exact pin-compatible replacement that is currently in the Microchip catalog, request PIC16F15354-E/ML cross-reference.
Which software tools program the PIC16LF15354-E/ML?
The PIC16LF15354-E/ML is programmed with Microchip's MPLAB X IDE (free download) using either the XC8 compiler (Free or PRO) or the legacy MPASMX/MPLAB XC8 toolchains. In-circuit programming and debugging requires an MPLAB PICkit 4, MPLAB SNAP, MPLAB ICD 4 or the MPLAB REAL ICE emulator, all of which connect through the MCLR/ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT pins and the on-chip debug module.
How does the PIC16LF15354-E/ML differ from PIC16LF15344-E/ML?
The PIC16LF15354-E/ML has 7 KB of Flash versus 4 KB on the PIC16LF15344-E/ML, while RAM, EEPROM, peripherals and the 28-QFN pin assignment remain identical. Both share the same low-voltage 1.8V-3.6V XLP silicon and identical CIP peripherals, so the 15354 is the firmware-headroom upgrade - choose it when your code grows toward the 4 KB ceiling of the 15344.
Is the PIC16LF15354-E/ML suitable for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes?
Yes, the PIC16LF15354-E/ML is purpose-built for low-duty-cycle IoT sensing. Its eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology delivers typical sleep currents in the nA range with sub-microsecond wake-up, the "LF" variant drops VDD to 1.8V for a Li-coin or two-cell alkaline supply, and the four Configurable Logic Cells handle autonomous sensor gating without waking the CPU. This combination typically extends coin-cell life from months to multiple years.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16LF15354-E/ML?
The closest drop-in same-package replacement is PIC16F15354-E/ML (same 28-QFN pinout, 5V-tolerant, no firmware change). Other same-footprint Microchip options include PIC16F15344-E/ML (smaller Flash) and PIC16F15356-E/ML (larger Flash). For non-Microchip sources, evaluate Nuvoton M051 series or Silicon Labs EFM8 Busy Bee, but be aware these require porting firmware because the peripherals and toolchain differ.
Does PIC16LF15354-E/ML support touch sensing or mTouch?
No, the PIC16LF15354-E/ML does not include the mTouch hardware CVD module - that is provided on PIC16F1554/1559 instead. It does, however, include four Configurable Logic Cells and a CWG that you can combine with the 10-bit ADC and comparator to build simple capacitive sensing firmware. For higher-volume touch applications, designers usually step up to the dedicated PIC16F1554 family or the PIC16F18456 line.
What does the "E/ML" suffix mean in PIC16LF15354-E/ML?
The "E" denotes the Industrial operating-temperature grade (-40C to +125C), while "/ML" identifies the 28-QFN (6 x 6 mm) Microchip package code. Microchip also offers the same silicon die in "/SP" (SPDIP-28), "/SO" (SOIC-28) and "/SS" (SSOP-28) package options for through-hole and lower-cost surface-mount assembly. All packages share the same pin function map, so firmware migrates directly with no code changes.
What are the key specifications of PIC16LF15354-E/ML that engineers should know?
Engineers evaluating the PIC16LF15354-E/ML typically anchor on: 32 MHz core, 7 KB Flash / 512 B SRAM / 224 B EEPROM, 1.8 V to 3.6 V operating VDD, 25 I/O pins, a 10-bit ADC with up to 25 analog channels, four 10-bit PWM channels, EUSART x2, SPI/I2C, four CLCs, a CWG, NCO and on-chip debug. According to Microchip's PIC16F153xx datasheet, these parameters let you replace older PIC16F1xx designs with a double-clock-speed, peripheral-rich MCU while still using the same XC8 toolchain.

Dữ liệu tham khảo kỹ thuật cho PIC16LF15354-E/ML — so sánh, hướng dẫn thiết kế và thông tin tuân thủ.

Ghi chú thiết kế

Place a 0.1uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of every VDD pin (pins 1 and 27 on the 28-QFN package) plus a single 1uF bulk cap on the VDD rail. The LF silicon tolerates 1.8V operation, but transient current spikes during CWG switching can pull VDD out of spec; the bulk cap suppresses the resulting brown-out resets. Verify IDC and IOH against the 28-QFN package thermal limits at 32 MHz.

Always configure the PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) registers before assigning UART/SPI/I2C functions to physical pins - PPS defaults differ between PIC16F15354 sub-variants and an unassigned peripheral will drive 'noise' on unintended pins. Use the MPLAB Code Configurator's Pin Manager to generate the unlock sequence (PPSLOCK = 0x55 / 0xAA) once at startup; forgetting the lock unlock causes peripherals to silently fail. Estimated: this is standard PIC16F1xxx PPS behaviour per the family datasheet.

The 28-QFN exposed thermal pad (pin 28) MUST be soldered to a grounded copper pad of at least ~10 mm^2 for heat dissipation; this also lowers theta_JA from ~80 C/W to ~35 C/W. Route any high-frequency signals on the top layer only over a continuous ground plane, and keep ADC traces short and guarded to achieve the 10-bit ADC's full noise performance. Avoid routing SPI/SCL traces adjacent to the CWG outputs.
