ATMEGA8515-16JU 概述

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA8515-16JU is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8 KB in-system programmable Flash, 512 B SRAM, 512 B EEPROM, an external memory interface supporting up to 64 KB external SRAM, and 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz, housed in a 44-PLCC (J-lead, 16.6 x 16.6 mm) package.

A microcontroller unit (MCU) integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals on a single silicon die, forming the lowest layer of the embedded-system hierarchy beneath system-on-chip (SoC) devices and single-board computers. The ATmega8515 belongs to the AVR 8-bit MCU family, which uses an advanced RISC architecture with 130 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle, plus 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU.

Key features include an external memory interface (a rarity in small AVR parts, enabling up to 64 KB of external SRAM), a full-duplex serial USART, a serial peripheral interface (SPI), two flexible timer/counters with compare modes, internal and external interrupt sources, a programmable watchdog timer, and 35 general-purpose I/O lines. The 16 MHz speed grade delivers 16 MIPS while operating from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply.

The AVR core executes most instructions in one clock cycle, achieving near-1 MIPS per MHz efficiency, and supports In-System Programming (ISP) via the SPI port so firmware can be updated after board assembly. Boot-section Flash with Read-While-Write support permits self-programming for field upgrades.

Typical applications include legacy industrial control boards, battery-powered instrumentation, communication adapters using the external memory bus, and hobby/educational systems (the MajorCore Arduino hardware package supports the ATmega8515).

Design consideration: the -16JU is a 5 V commercial-temperature part; for extended temperature range select the -16JI industrial variant in the same 44-PLCC footprint.

典型应用

ATMEGA8515-16JU 适用于 6 应用s: Legacy Industrial Control Boards, External-Memory Expansion Systems, Serial Communication Adapters, Hobbyist and Educational Platforms, Battery-Powered Measurement Instruments, Firmware Field-Upgradeable Devices.

🏭

Legacy Industrial Control Boards

The ATMEGA8515-16JU fits legacy industrial controllers because its 5 V, 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply matches classic industrial logic rails and its 35 general-purpose I/O lines drive relays, optocouplers, and status LEDs without glue logic. The external memory interface supporting up to 64 KB SRAM allows data logging buffers far beyond the internal 512 B, which matters in batching and metering equipment. Per the Microchip datasheet, the two flexible timer/counters with compare modes generate PWM and precise timing for motor and valve control. Placed on a 44-PLCC socketed or soldered footprint, the part supports In-System Programming via SPI, letting field technicians update firmware without desoldering. Design trade-off: the 0C to +70C commercial grade limits deployment in unconditioned cabinets - specify the ATMEGA8515-16JI industrial variant, which is pin-identical, for harsh factory floors.

🖥️

External-Memory Expansion Systems

The defining feature of the ATMEGA8515-16JU in this class is its external memory interface: address and data buses multiplexed onto the port pins let the microcontroller address up to 64 KB of external SRAM, per the Microchip product page. This suits data-acquisition loggers, protocol buffers, and graphics frame buffers where 512 B of internal SRAM is insufficient but a 32-bit MCU is overkill. The 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz keeps bus transactions fast, while the AVR's single-cycle execution of most of its 130 instructions minimizes wait-state penalties on external accesses. In practice, designers latch the address bus with a 74x573 and add a 5 V SRAM such as a 32K x 8 device. Trade-off: using the external bus consumes most port pins, leaving fewer I/O for peripherals - budget pin allocation early in the schematic.

🌐

Serial Communication Adapters

With a full-duplex serial programmable USART plus SPI, the ATMEGA8515-16JU serves as a protocol bridge between RS-232/RS-485 field buses and SPI peripherals such as EEPROMs, ADCs, and displays. The USART supports standard baud rates from the 16 MHz clock, while the hardware SPI port moves data at up to fosc/2 for fast peripheral exchanges, per the Microchip datasheet feature list. Typical builds include programming adapters, gateways converting serial data to external SRAM queues, and retrofit interfaces for legacy 5 V equipment where 3.3 V MCUs would need level shifters. The programmable watchdog timer provides autonomous recovery in unattended communication nodes. Design consideration: implement the watchdog reset correctly in firmware so long ISRs do not trigger spurious resets, and use 100 nF decoupling on each supply pin to keep SPI edges clean.

🧩

Hobbyist and Educational Platforms

The ATMEGA8515-16JU remains popular in education and hobby projects because the MCUdude MajorCore GitHub project provides a complete Arduino hardware package for the ATmega8515 and ATmega162, bringing Arduino IDE, bootloading, and library support to this classic AVR. The through-hole-friendly legacy and the 44-PLCC socket option make it approachable for breadboard adapters and teaching boards. Its 130 single-cycle-executed RISC instructions and 32 working registers illustrate RISC concepts cleanly in courses, while the external memory interface lets students expand memory hands-on up to 64 KB. Running 16 MIPS at 16 MHz from a forgiving 5 V rail, it tolerates the imperfect wiring typical of prototypes. Trade-off: it is not compatible with UNO shields, so use MajorCore's documented pin map and a dedicated breakout PCB.

💊

Battery-Powered Measurement Instruments

Handheld instruments built on the ATMEGA8515-16JU benefit from the AVR family's low-power design philosophy and the part's 512 B EEPROM, which retains calibration constants and user settings across power cycles without external non-volatile memory. The device supports a throughput of 16 MIPS at 16 MHz per the Microchip product page, allowing burst-measure-then-sleep strategies that stretch battery life, and the internal RC oscillator option lets low-precision tasks run without a crystal to save board space. Timer/counter compare modes generate measurement gates and display multiplexing clocks directly in hardware. In practice, designers clock the part at reduced frequency in sleep-active duty cycles, since the 16 MHz grade draws the most current. Trade-off: this 5 V commercial part is best for indoor instruments; select the ATMEGA8515-16JI for outdoor or cold-storage environments.

🔧

Firmware Field-Upgradeable Devices

The ATMEGA8515-16JU's In-System Programmable Flash with Read-While-Write capabilities, per the Microchip datasheet, enables boot-loader-based field upgrades: a small boot section rewrites the application firmware over its USART or SPI link after deployment, eliminating product recalls for software fixes. The SPI programming interface also supports production programming in-circuit, so assembled boards are flashed at end-of-line without sockets. The programmable watchdog timer guarantees recovery if an interrupted upgrade loses power mid-write. Typical deployments include networked building controllers and industrial counters where firmware corrections ship annually. Design consideration: reserve adequate boot-section size in the fuse configuration and verify the flash-write voltage margin - the 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply range must be maintained during self-programming, or writes may fail silently.

What is the difference between ATMEGA8515-16JU and ATMEGA8515-16JI?
The only functional difference is the operating temperature range and package processing. Both share the same die, 8 KB Flash, 16 MHz rating, 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply, and the same 44-PLCC J-lead footprint, making them drop-in replacements. The -16JU suffix is the commercial grade (0C to +70C) while the -16JI is the industrial grade (-40C to +85C). Choose -16JI for factory-floor, automotive-cabin, or outdoor equipment; choose -16JU for cost-optimized indoor products.
What is the difference between ATMEGA8515 and ATMEGA8535?
The ATMEGA8515 and ATMEGA8535 are pin-compatible 8-bit AVR microcontrollers sharing the same 44-pin PLCC/TQFP footprint and 8 KB Flash, but their peripheral emphasis differs: the ATmega8515 features an external memory interface (up to 64 KB external SRAM) while the ATmega8535 provides an 8-channel 10-bit ADC. Utmel hosts a detailed three-way comparison of ATMEGA8515-16JU vs ATMEGA8535-16JU. Designs using the external memory bus should stay with the 8515; designs needing multi-channel analog should migrate to the 8535 after a full pin-function review.
ATMEGA8515-16JU vs AT90S8515 - which should I use?
Use the ATMEGA8515-16JU for all new designs. The ATmega8515 is the direct successor to the AT90S8515 and is pin-compatible in the 44-PLCC package, but adds more Flash options, enhanced peripherals, and lower power consumption; Findchips publishes side-by-side comparisons of ATMEGA8515-16JU vs AT90S8515-PI and AT90S8515-8JC confirming the family relationship. Existing AT90S8515 boards can typically be upgraded with the ATMEGA8515 after verifying fuse settings and clock configuration, since the AVR instruction set is largely a superset.
Can ATMEGA162 replace ATMEGA8515-16JU?
The ATMEGA162 can migrate designs from the ATmega8515, but it is not a blind drop-in: Microchip application note AVR087 ('Migrating between ATmega8515 and ATmega162', document doc2536) is specifically written to guide this conversion in both directions. The ATmega162 adds UART2, an extended external memory interface, and JTAG, while retaining the 8-bit AVR core and a similar 40/44-pin layout. Follow AVR087's checklist for pin-function and fuse differences before swapping the part on an existing PCB.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA8515-16JU?
The best drop-in replacements are ATMEGA8515-16JI and ATMEGA8515-16JC, which share the identical die and 44-PLCC footprint and differ only in temperature grade (JI is -40C to +85C industrial, JC is 0C to +70C commercial). Both are already listed on XAIPART for same-day cross-ordering. For legacy supply continuity, the AT90S8515-16JC is pin-compatible in the same package but is an older-generation part. No cross-brand (non-Microchip/Atmel) pin-compatible AVR equivalent is offered, because the AVR instruction set is proprietary.
Where can I download the ATMEGA8515-16JU datasheet PDF?
The official ATmega8515 datasheet PDF is hosted on Microchip's document server at ww1.microchip.com (document 2512S), covering all package and speed variants including the ATMEGA8515-16JU. Third-party mirrors exist on datasheets.com, ADatasheet, and digchip, but the Microchip server should always be treated as the authoritative source for the latest revision. The same PDF contains the 44-PLCC pinout diagrams, electrical characteristics, and programming specifications.
Where can I find the ATMEGA8515-16JU pinout?
The 44-PLCC pinout for the ATMEGA8515-16JU is published in the Microchip ATmega8515 datasheet (document 2512S) in the pin configuration section, with separate diagrams for the TQFP and PLCC 44-pin packages. The PLCC follows the standard counter-clockwise numbering with the pin-1 index mark at the top-center notch. LCSC also provides free access to package and pinout diagrams for order code C614066. Always cross-check against the datasheet revision before layout sign-off, since second-source diagrams occasionally lag the official drawing.
Is ATMEGA8515-16JU suitable for an Arduino project?
Yes. The MCUdude MajorCore GitHub project provides a full Arduino hardware package for the ATmega8515 and ATmega162, enabling Arduino IDE sketches, bootloading, and standard library usage on this chip. Because the ATMEGA8515-16JU runs at 5 V and offers an external memory interface plus a USART, it suits larger legacy-style Arduino builds. Note that it is not pin-compatible with standard ATmega328P Arduino boards, so use MajorCore's documented pin mapping rather than UNO assumptions.
What supply voltage does ATMEGA8515-16JU require?
The ATMEGA8515-16JU requires a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply per the DigChip specification summary, because the -16 speed grade (16 MHz) is qualified only at 5 V operation. Lower-voltage ATmega8515 variants such as the 8 MHz 'L' grade operate down to 2.7 V. Do not run the 16 MHz part below 4.5 V, as timing and Flash-programming margins are not guaranteed; a 5 V +/- 5% regulated rail with 100 nF decoupling per supply pin is the recommended design practice.
Is ATMEGA8515-16JU RoHS compliant and lead-free?
The RoHS and REACH status of the specific ATMEGA8515-16JU orderable was not stated in the verified web data retrieved for this page, so compliance cannot be asserted here - check the Microchip product page or the distributor compliance certificate (DigiKey and Mouser publish material declarations per part). Historically, Microchip offers both RoHS-compliant and non-compliant builds of mature AVR parts under the same base number, so request the material declaration sheet from your supplier before export-regulated production. This answer deliberately avoids guessing compliance data.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA8515-16JU that engineers should know?
Engineers should know these five facts about the ATMEGA8515-16JU: (1) it is an 8-bit AVR RISC MCU with 8 KB ISP Flash, 512 B SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM; (2) it runs at up to 16 MHz, delivering 16 MIPS from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply; (3) it uniquely offers an external memory interface for up to 64 KB external SRAM, rare in small AVR parts; (4) peripherals include a USART, SPI, two timer/counters with compare modes, and a programmable watchdog; (5) it is packaged in a 44-PLCC (16.6 x 16.6 mm) surface-mount body with 35 I/O lines, commercial 0C to +70C temperature rating.
Is the ATMEGA8515-16JU the same as ATMEGA8515-16JUR?
The ATMEGA8515-16JUR is functionally the same silicon as the ATMEGA8515-16JU; the 'R' suffix only indicates tape-and-reel packaging for automated assembly instead of the standard tray or tube pack. Both share the identical 44-PLCC package, 16 MHz rating, 4.5 V to 5.5 V operating range, and temperature specification, so electrical substitution is seamless. Avaq publishes a direct specification comparison of ATMEGA8515-16JUR vs ATMEGA8515-16JU confirming this. Choose the R variant for pick-and-place reel feeding.
When should I choose ATMEGA8515-16JU over ATMEGA8515-16JI?
Choose the ATMEGA8515-16JU when your product operates in a controlled indoor environment between 0C and +70C, such as office equipment, consumer appliances, or lab instruments - the commercial-grade part is typically less expensive and always sufficient in that envelope. Choose the ATMEGA8515-16JI when ambient temperatures can fall below 0C or rise above 70C, including unheated warehouses, industrial panels, and vehicle-adjacent enclosures. Both share the same 44-PLCC footprint, so a later upgrade from JU to JI requires no PCB change - only firmware re-verification of temperature-dependent calibration.

选型指南

Choose the ATMEGA8515-16JU when you need a 5 V, 16 MHz 8-bit AVR with 8 KB Flash and, critically, an external memory interface for up to 64 KB SRAM - no other same-footprint AVR offers that combination. Choose ATMEGA8515-16JI if ambient temperatures go below 0C or above +70C; it is the identical die in the identical 44-PLCC footprint with industrial rating. Choose ATMEGA8515-16JC for commercial-grade continuity sourcing from the XAIPART catalog. Choose ATMEGA8535-16JU only if your design needs the on-chip 8-channel 10-bit ADC and can give up the external memory bus. Choose ATMEGA162-16JU for new designs needing dual UART and JTAG, following Microchip app note AVR087 for migration. Avoid the AT90S8515 family except for exact legacy replacements - the ATmega8515 supersedes it. Trade-off summary: this part maximizes external memory at the cost of no on-chip ADC; analog-heavy designs should migrate within the family.

设计说明

The -16JU is qualified at 4.5 V to 5.5 V only; the 16 MHz speed grade has no low-voltage operating point. Provide a 5 V +/- 5% regulator with at least 100 nF ceramic decoupling on each supply pin plus a 4.7 uF to 10 uF bulk capacitor near the IC. Do not mix this part into 3.3 V designs - Flash self-programming and timing margins are not guaranteed below 4.5 V. If a 3 V rail is mandatory, select an 8 MHz 'L' grade ATmega8515 variant instead and re-verify timing-critical firmware.

External-memory bus designs must latch the multiplexed address bus (typically with a 74x573 on the ALE-equivalent signal) and add the correct wait states for slow SRAM. Verify that peripheral pin multiplexing is disabled on ports used by the external bus, or bus contention will corrupt reads. When migrating to the ATmega162, follow Microchip application note AVR087 (doc2536) - it is not a blind swap. Finally, configure fuses deliberately: wrong clock-source or boot-size fuses are the most common cause of 'dead' boards after ISP programming.

The 44-PLCC J-lead package has leads on 1.27 mm (0.05 in) centers on all four sides - design the land pattern to the Microchip PLCC-44 drawing in the datasheet (16.6 x 16.6 mm body) rather than scaling a TQFP-44 footprint, because J-lead solder-joint geometry differs from gull-wing. Keep the crystal within 10 mm of XTAL1/XTAL2 with short ground returns, and place 100 nF decouplers at opposite corners of the package. PLCC sockets are acceptable for development but add contact resistance; avoid them in high-frequency or high-vibration production hardware.
