ADS5296RGCT Übersicht

The Texas Instruments ADS5296RGCT is a high-performance, low-power 12-bit, 80-MSPS, 8-channel pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) housed in a 64-pin VQFN (9 mm × 9 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad. It integrates eight simultaneously-sampling ADC channels that deliver 12-bit resolution at up to 80 MSPS per channel, sharing a common clock and reference to simplify synchronization across channels. The device operates from a single 1.8 V analog supply and a 1.8 V–3.3 V digital I/O supply, drawing only 90 mW per channel at 80 MSPS, making it attractive for high-channel-count data acquisition cards that must fit within tight thermal budgets.

An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is a data-converter integrated circuit that samples continuous-time analog voltage signals and outputs discrete multi-bit digital codes at a fixed sampling rate. Multi-channel pipelined ADCs such as the ADS5296RGCT fall into the broader hierarchy of data converter ICs -> ADC -> successive-approximation / pipeline / SAR / sigma-delta / flash ADC -> signal-chain semiconductor. Compared with integrating or SAR converters, pipeline ADCs deliver the highest sample rates (tens to hundreds of MSPS) while maintaining 10-14 bit resolution, at the cost of a few clock cycles of pipeline latency. The ADS5296RGCT lands squarely in the multi-channel, mid-resolution, high-speed category used in medical imaging, communications test, and industrial inspection.

Key features of the ADS5296RGCT include a 12-bit resolution with no missing codes, 70 dB SNR at 10 MHz input and 80 MSPS, an internal reference (with optional external reference), LVDS DDR and CMOS digital output modes, and per-channel power-down control. An integrated digital gain-and-offset correction block lets designers trim inter-channel matching on the fly. The integrated low-jitter PLL operates from a single LVDS/CMOS clock and generates all internal sample timing, eliminating the need for an external track-and-hold clock.

Typical applications include medical imaging receivers (ultrasound beamformers, CT detector boards), industrial machine-vision and inspection multi-channel boards, communications test equipment and wideband digitizers, and defense / surveillance phased-array front ends. Channel-count reduction at lower power is supported through software-configurable channel enabling.

When designing with the ADS5296RGCT, place the 0.1 µF / 10 µF analog-supply decoupling network within 5 mm of the AVDD pins, keep analog and digital return currents separated back to a single ground star under the exposed pad, and follow TI's recommended LVDS 100-Ω termination pattern on the digital outputs to avoid reflections at 80 MSPS. Thermal management is critical: at full-channel 80 MSPS operation the device dissipates approximately 720 mW and benefits from a 6-layer PCB thermal via array under the EP.

Typische Anwendungen

ADS5296RGCT ist geeignet für 7 Anwendungs: Medical Ultrasound Beamformer Front End, Industrial Multi-Channel Machine-Vision Inspection, Communications Test Equipment / Wideband Digitizer, Phased-Array Radar / EW Wideband Receiver, Multi-Channel Energy / Vibration Data Acquisition, Medical CT / PET Detector Front-End Digitization, High-Density Oscilloscope / Mixed-Signal Test.

💊

Medical Ultrasound Beamformer Front End

The Texas Instruments ADS5296RGCT provides eight simultaneously-sampling 12-bit 80-MSPS channels in a 64-VQFN 9x9 mm package - exactly the channel density and dynamic-range required by ultrasound beamformer receive paths. Per-channel 70 dB SNR at 10 MHz IF directly translates to deeper penetration and finer grayscale resolution, while the 90 mW-per-channel dissipation at 80 MSPS lets compact 32- or 64-channel probe-interface boards stay within thermal envelope without forced-air cooling. Why it fits: with eight channels per chip, four ADS5296RGCTs cover 32 channels on one PCB, reducing board area vs four-channel alternative ADCs. The LVDS DDR digital output minimizes pin count while delivering clean 640 MSPS aggregate data to the FPGA beamformer downstream. Use it with the TI TX810 ultrasound pulser, an external LNA, and a TI LMH6522 variable-gain amplifier.

🏭

Industrial Multi-Channel Machine-Vision Inspection

Industrial machine-vision and PCB AOI (automated optical inspection) systems need many synchronized A/D channels sampling photodiode or line-scan sensor outputs simultaneously at 50-80 MSPS, and the ADS5296RGCT provides eight channels per chip with shared clock and reference to guarantee phase coherence across channels. The 500 MHz -3 dB input bandwidth handles fast pulsed photodiode echoes with clean settling, while the on-chip digital gain correction (one register per channel) calibrates sensor-to-sensor gain mismatch in production. Why it fits: pin-to-pin compatibility across the ADS529x family lets designers drop in the ADS5296ARGCT for higher AC performance without PCB rework. Pair with a TI LMH6629 input buffer, an external low-jitter LVDS clock like the CDCE6214, and a Xilinx Kintex-class FPGA (for example XC7S50-2CSGA324I in the XAIPART catalog) for downstream processing.

🌐

Communications Test Equipment / Wideband Digitizer

The ADS5296RGCT is well-suited to wideband IF digitizer cards in communications test equipment, spectrum analyzers, and software-defined-radio (SDR) receivers that need eight channels of coherent 12-bit 80 MSPS capture on a single board. Each channel's 70 dB SNR at 10 MHz IF combined with the on-chip low-jitter PLL gives flexibility on the input-clock source, simplifying board design versus PLL-less ADCs. Why it fits: the LVDS DDR output interface preserves timing margin across FR-4 backplane to the FPGA at 80 MSPS data rate per channel, and at 720 mW total the ADC is modest to cool even in a sealed chassis. A natural system partners is a TI LMK04828 clock conditioner plus a Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA such as XC7K325T, and an LMX2594 wideband PLL for the LO.

✈️

Phased-Array Radar / EW Wideband Receiver

Phased-array radar and electronic-warfare (EW) receiver cards require many synchronized ADCs sampling at high IF with low latency, and the ADS5296RGCT's eight 12-bit 80-MSPS channels with on-chip PLL deliver an aggregate 640 MSPS throughput in a tightly integrated 64-VQFN footprint. The 90 mW per channel power dissipation keeps the thermal profile of 8- or 16-element sub-arrays manageable without exotic PCB stack-ups. Why it fits: phase-coherent simultaneous sampling across channels is essential for digital beamforming, and the shared clock and reference of the ADS5296RGCT family guarantee that synchronization. Compatible companion parts: TI ADC32RF45 (for higher IF applications), TI LMX2694 wideband LO, and a Kintex Ultrascale+ FPGA such as the XCKU035 family for back-end processing.

🌐

Multi-Channel Energy / Vibration Data Acquisition

The ADS5296RGCT suits high-channel-count data-acquisition systems (DAQS) used in energy exploration (seismic), vibration monitoring, and sonar receivers because it offers eight simultaneously-sampling 12-bit 80 MSPS ADCs per chip with per-channel power-down control to scale to lower sample rates at lower power. With eight channels per IC and 64-VQFN 9x9 mm footprint, designers can pack 64 or 128 channels into a single 6U board by ganging multiple ADS5296RGCTs on parallel clock and reference trees. Why it fits: pin-to-pin family compatibility with the ADS5294 (50 MSPS) and ADS5292 (10-bit) lets designers seed-with-protype and ramp-with-production from a single board. Companion parts include TI REF5025 voltage reference, TI OPA2277 op-amp front end, and TI ISO7640FM isolation.

💊

Medical CT / PET Detector Front-End Digitization

Computed-tomography (CT) and positron-emission-tomography (PET) scanner detector boards use multi-channel ADCs to digitize scintillation-photodiode pulses from many detector elements, and the ADS5296RGCT provides eight channels at 80 MSPS in a 64-VQFN 9x9 mm footprint - exactly what is required to digitize 64 or more detector channels within the tight geometry of a CT gantry ring. Its on-chip digital gain-and-offset correction block supports per-channel calibration to compensate photodiode gain variations. Why it fits: low channel-channel latency mismatch is essential for PET coincidence detection, and the pipelined architecture introduces only a few clock cycles of deterministic latency. Compatible parts include TI AFE2256 front-end, TI LMH6517 variable-gain amp, and a TI TMS320C6655 DSP for back-end image reconstruction.

🖥️

High-Density Oscilloscope / Mixed-Signal Test

Modular oscilloscope and mixed-signal test equipment benefit from the ADS5296RGCT's eight 12-bit 80 MSPS channels sharing a common clock: when stacked, four ADS5296RGCT ICs yield 32 channels in a small PCB area, enough for a 4-channel oscilloscope with deep-channel-count expansion. Why it fits: the 500 MHz -3 dB input bandwidth covers most analog and digital signal probing needs up to the second Nyquist zone, while the LVDS DDR output minimizes the FPGA pin-count and wiring-density overhead. Companion parts: TI THS4631 FET-input buffer, TI OPA656 input op-amp, and TI LMP7704 signal-conditioning quad op-amp.

Each of the 8 analog inputs simultaneously samples at up to 80 MSPS, producing a combined aggregate throughput of 640 MSPS across the device. According to Texas Instruments, the converter is built on a CMOS pipeline architecture and integrates eight sample-and-hold blocks sharing a common internal clock generated by an on-chip PLL.
What package does the ADS5296RGCT use?
The ADS5296RGCT ships in a 64-lead VQFN package (TI part suffix RGC) measuring 9 mm x 9 mm with an exposed thermal pad (EP). The EP must be soldered to the ground plane with a thermal via array to meet the 90 mW-per-channel thermal envelope. DigiKey lists the package as 64-VQFN (9x9), confirming the industry-standard 64-pin QFN family footprint used across the ADS529x family.
What is the difference between ADS5296RGCT and ADS5296RGCR?
The ADS5296RGCT is shipped in Tape-and-Reel packaging quantity 250 per reel, while the ADS5296RGCR is the smaller Tape-and-Reel cut-tape order option (often packaging quantity 1000). Both share the same 12-bit 80 MSPS 8-channel silicon die and identical 64-VQFN 9x9 mm footprint, so either can be a drop-in replacement for the other when reflow profile and reel-handling equipment are matched.
What is the difference between ADS5296RGCT and ADS5296ARGCT?
The ADS5296ARGCT is the newer A-revision of the same part: it shares the 12-bit 80 MSPS 8-channel architecture and the identical 64-pin 9 mm x 9 mm QFN footprint, but adds an enhanced digital gain/offset correction block, an LVDS clock-output option, and tighter SNR/SFDR performance. Per the FindIC cross-reference, the A-revision is described as a fully replaceable upgrade with consistent terminals and package, so the ADS5296ARGCT is a clean drop-in alternative with the same pinout.

Is the ADS5296RGCT suitable for medical ultrasound imaging?
Yes, the ADS5296RGCT is well-suited for medical ultrasound beamformer front ends. It provides eight simultaneously-sampled 12-bit channels at 80 MSPS with 70 dB SNR at 10 MHz input, which directly improves image dynamic range. Its 720 mW total dissipation (90 mW per channel at 80 MSPS) simplifies thermal design in compact ultrasound probe-interface boards, and the 64-VQFN 9x9 mm footprint allows 8-channel density in a constrained PCB area.
What is the typical power consumption of the ADS5296RGCT?
Each ADS5296RGCT channel consumes approximately 90 mW at 80 MSPS sample rate from the 1.8 V analog supply, yielding about 720 mW for the full 8-channel device at maximum sample rate. Power scales linearly with sample rate; at 40 MSPS the per-channel dissipation drops to roughly 55 mW. Texas Instruments' datasheet specifies the device operates from a single 1.8 V AVDD and a separate 1.8 V-3.3 V DRVDD for digital output level shifting.
Can the ADS5296RGCT be replaced by the ADS5296ARGCT without PCB rework?
Yes, the ADS5296ARGCT is a true drop-in replacement for the ADS5296RGCT in the same 64-pin 9 mm x 9 mm QFN package. The terminal assignments, pin pitch, and exposed-thermal-pad land pattern are identical between the A and pre-A revisions, so no PCB rework is required. The ADS5296ARGCT additionally integrates enhanced digital gain/offset correction and slightly better AC specs, but a redesigned register-init sequence is recommended.
Which tools are compatible with the ADS5296RGCT?
The ADS5296RGCT is fully supported by Texas Instruments' TSW1400EVM capture card plus the High-Speed Data Converter Pro GUI. Designers can also use TINA-TI for analog-input front-end simulation and MATLAB scripts for FFT and SNR analysis of the captured ADC data. The device register configuration is documented in the ADS5296A datasheet's SPI section, compatible with the TI ADC SPI controller tool.
Is the ADS5296RGCT RoHS and REACH compliant?
Yes, the ADS5296RGCT is RoHS compliant, lead-free (Pb-free), and REACH SVHC compliant. The 64-VQFN (RGC) part uses Pb-free matte-tin terminations with an Ni-Pd-Au lead-frame finish and is rated for a peak-reflow temperature of 260 C per JEDEC J-STD-020E. The exposed thermal pad (EP) is electrically bonded to analog ground inside the package and must be soldered to the PCB thermal via array.
When should I choose the ADS5296RGCT over the ADS5296RGCR?
Choose the ADS5296RGCT for production line builds that consume full 250-piece reels; choose the ADS5296RGCR for prototyping or smaller batch builds (typically 1000-piece cut-tape). Both share the exact same die, pinout, and 64-VQFN footprint, so electrical performance is identical - the difference is purely in the packing quantity, reel orientation, and order code. Confirm your pick-and-place feeders accept either reel format before ordering.
What are the key specifications of the ADS5296RGCT that engineers should know?
Per the Texas Instruments ADS5296 datasheet, the four key specifications engineers must verify are: (1) 12-bit resolution with no missing codes; (2) 80 MSPS maximum sample rate per channel across all 8 channels; (3) 70 dB SNR at fIN = 10 MHz and 80 MSPS; and (4) 90 mW per channel power dissipation from a 1.8 V analog supply in a 64-VQFN 9x9 mm package. These four parameters together determine fit-for-purpose in ultrasound, communications-test, and wideband digitizer designs.

Designhinweise

The ADS5296RGCT requires a clean 1.8 V analog supply on AVDD and a separate 1.8 V-3.3 V on DRVDD for the digital output level shifter. Use a star-routing topology: place a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor within 2 mm of each AVDD pin, a 10 uF bulk ceramic nearby, and a ferrite bead between the upstream LDO and the AVDD pin to isolate the switching noise of downstream FPGAs. Power dissipation at 80 MSPS / 8 channels is approximately 720 mW, so the LDO must source at least 1.5 A for transient headroom, with at least 6 dB of AVDD PSRR at 10 MHz. Estimated: total AVDD budget = 0.5 A average (8 ch x ~90 mW each / 1.8 V = 400 mA + overhead); the LDO should be sized at 1.5 A for peak.

Layout must keep analog and digital return current paths separate back to a single ground star under the exposed thermal pad. The 64-VQFN 9x9 mm exposed pad must be soldered to a contiguous ground copper pour with a thermal-via array (typically 5 x 5 = 25 vias, 0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch). Route the 64 LVDS DDR data pairs as 100 ohm differential with length matching to within 50 mils across the 8 channels to minimize skew between samples. Keep the analog input traces on the top layer, short (<5 mm), and surrounded by a guard ground on both sides to minimize coupling from digital signals switching at 640 MSPS aggregate rate.

Three pitfalls: (1) using an external reference when the internal reference would suffice - the internal ref provides 1.5 V with 50 ppm/C typ drift and 4 uVrms noise - only switch to an external REF5025 if temperature drift below 50 ppm/C is mandatory; (2) neglecting the internal PLL filter capacitor - a missing 1 uF on the LF pin will cause the PLL to fail to lock at power-up; (3) failing to power down unused channels - per-channel power-down (PDx register) drops quiescent draw by ~85 mW per disabled channel, so leaving unused channels on when only 4 are routed costs roughly 340 mW of unnecessary power and a junction-temperature increase.
