FT231XS-R Übersicht

The FTDI FT231XS-R is a USB-to-full-handshake-UART bridge IC that integrates a USB 2.0 Full Speed (12 Mbps) controller, on-chip USB transceiver, clock generation (no external crystal required), and full modem control lines (RTS/CTS, DTR/DSR, DCD, RI) into a single 20-pin SSOP package. It operates from a 4.5V to 5.25V internal LDO supply (VBUS tied to +5V from USB) and supports UART baud rates from 300 baud to 3 Mbaud. The -R suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume assembly.

A USB-to-UART bridge IC is a class of interface device that converts USB signaling into a serial (asynchronous) UART protocol so that microcontrollers, microprocessors, and legacy serial peripherals can communicate with a host PC without an external MCU. Bridges belong to the broader category of USB interface ICs > interface ICs > integrated circuits, and the FT231X family specifically sits in the FT-X series second generation, succeeding the older FT232R. The FT231X family adds integrated MTP memory for user-configurable descriptor fields and is offered in three variants by feature set: FT230X (basic UART, fewer lines), FT231X (full modem UART, more GPIOs), and FT234X (TX/RX only).

Key features of the FT231XS-R include full hardware handshake support (RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI), four GPIO pins multiplexed with modem-control functions, an integrated 1024-byte EEPROM (MTP, user-configurable for VID/PID/product string/serial number), a wide operating temperature range of -40C to +85C industrial grade, and low-power suspend current of approximately 125 uA when the USB host is in suspend mode. The chip is RoHS compliant and ships in a small SSOP-20 footprint that drops onto the same PCB land pattern used by the FT232R (SSOP-28 is the larger legacy). The device is supported by FTDI's royalty-free VCP (Virtual COM Port) and D2XX direct-driver libraries, allowing seamless integration with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Architecturally, the FT231XS-R uses an internal 48 MHz oscillator with on-chip PLL to derive the USB 12 MHz clock and the UART baud-rate generator, eliminating the external crystal that older USB-to-UART bridges required. The USB protocol stack is handled entirely in hardware/firmware on the chip, so no host-side USB stack or external MCU intervention is needed for basic UART pass-through. The integrated MTP memory (reprogrammable via USB from the host PC using FTDI's FT_PROG utility) lets OEMs customize VID/PID and descriptor strings without external EEPROM.

Typical applications include industrial RS-232 / RS-485 dongles, debug and console ports on development boards, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, microcontroller-to-PC debug bridges, USB instrumentation probes, embedded firmware-flashing fixtures, and any design that needs a reliable, driver-supported USB-to-serial port with full modem-control signals. Its small SSOP-20 footprint and absence of an external crystal make it a strong choice for compact, low-BOM-count boards.

When designing with the FT231X, ensure the USB D+/D- pair is routed as a 90 ohm differential trace and the VBUS pin is connected to +5V (or to a 3.3V rail for the FT231XQ variant). For designs migrating from the FT232R, note that the FT231X uses SSOP-20 (smaller than SSOP-28) so the PCB footprint must be redesigned, and the FT232R's external EEPROM is replaced by on-chip MTP memory.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, verified drop-in alternatives (FT231XQ-R for 3.3V operation and the FT230X family for reduced GPIO), and practical PCB layout notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet.

Typische Anwendungen

FT231XS-R ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial USB-to-Serial Dongle, Embedded Development Board Console Port, USB Instrumentation Probe / Data Acquisition Front-End, Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal Connectivity, Microcontroller Firmware Flashing Fixture, IoT Sensor Gateway / Smart-Home Hub.

🏭

Industrial USB-to-Serial Dongle

The FT231XS-R's full handshake modem-control lines (RTS/CTS/DTR/DSR/DCD/RI) make it a strong fit for industrial USB-to-RS-232/485 dongles that must replace legacy DB-9 serial ports on factory PCs. With 300-baud-to-3-Mbaud support, the chip transparently passes legacy PLC, sensor, and instrumentation protocols. Designers route a 90-ohm USB D+/D- differential pair to USB Type-B or micro-B connector; the FT231X handles the USB protocol stack in hardware, leaving no MCU-side USB stack requirement. Compared to MCP2200 and CH340 alternatives, FTDI's mature VCP/D2XX driver base and global inventory reduce design risk for industrial deployments.

🧩

Embedded Development Board Console Port

The FT231XS-R is widely used as a debug console on STM32, ESP32, NXP Kinetis, and Microchip PIC development boards. Its 3 Mbaud UART throughput is more than adequate for printf-style logging and firmware-flash bridges at 921600 baud. The integrated 48 MHz oscillator eliminates the external crystal that older USB-UART bridges needed, shrinking BOM count. Designers typically route the UART TX/RX to the target MCU's USART pins and break out RTS/CTS for hardware-flow-controlled bootloaders. The FT231X driver is pre-installed on modern Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux kernels, so end users rarely need to install drivers manually.

🔬

USB Instrumentation Probe / Data Acquisition Front-End

For USB-connected instrumentation such as oscilloscope probes, logic analyzers, and multimeter front-ends, the FT231XS-R provides a deterministic, low-latency UART path between the measurement front-end and host PC. The full modem-control lines enable hardware handshaking for high-throughput data streaming without software flow control. Internal MTP memory lets OEMs customize VID/PID and descriptor strings so Windows enumerates the device with a product-specific name. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature range supports use in lab and field environments.

💳

Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminal Connectivity

POS terminals, receipt printers, and barcode scanners rely on reliable USB-to-UART bridges to connect peripherals to the main terminal controller. The FT231XS-R's hardware modem-control signals enable proper handshaking with receipt printers that buffer data, while the integrated MTP memory supports OEM-specific VID/PID branding. The 8 mA active current and 125 uA suspend current are well-suited to battery and AC-powered POS hardware that must meet standby-power regulations. The royalty-free FTDI driver ecosystem keeps BOM costs predictable for POS OEMs.

⚡

Microcontroller Firmware Flashing Fixture

Production firmware-flashing fixtures benefit from the FT231XS-R's 3 Mbaud UART capability, which supports fast bootloader-based flash programming for ESP32, STM32, nRF52, and other MCUs that expose UART bootloaders. The chip's hardware RTS line can drive the target MCU's BOOT/reset pin for hands-free enter-bootloader sequencing, while CTS provides back-pressure. Compared to slower CH340 or CP2102N bridges at 921600 baud, the FT231X at 3 Mbaud cuts production flashing time significantly. The integrated MTP lets fixtures carry custom VID/PID so flashing stations identify themselves to flashing software.

🌐

IoT Sensor Gateway / Smart-Home Hub

IoT gateways and smart-home hubs that expose a USB-CDC serial console to the host for diagnostics and provisioning often use the FT231XS-R as the bridge between the hub MCU and the host USB port. The chip's industrial temperature range and proven driver support across Linux/Android Open Accessory mode enable reliable field deployments. The integrated clock and MTP reduce BOM count for cost-sensitive consumer IoT hardware. For hubs that also need USB Host mode, pair the FT231X with a USB Host controller like the MAX3421E; the FT231X handles the device-side UART console independently.

What is the FT231XS-R and what does it do?
The FT231XS-R is a USB-to-full-handshake-UART bridge IC from FTDI that converts USB 2.0 Full Speed signaling into a serial UART with full modem-control lines (RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI). According to the FTDI FT231X datasheet, it integrates the USB protocol stack, a 48 MHz internal oscillator with PLL, and a 1024-byte reprogrammable MTP memory for custom VID/PID, eliminating the need for an external crystal or EEPROM.
What is the maximum baud rate of the FT231XS-R?
The FT231XS-R supports UART baud rates from 300 baud up to 3 Mbaud. Per the FTDI FT231X datasheet, the baud-rate generator is derived from the internal 48 MHz oscillator, so no external crystal or baud-rate clock is required. For high-throughput links (firmware flashing, ISP bridges) 3 Mbaud is sufficient; for legacy RS-232 peripherals the minimum 300 baud covers vintage modems and test gear.
What is the difference between FT231XS-R and FT230XS-R?
The FT231XS-R provides full modem-control handshake signals (RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI) and 4 GPIO pins, while the FT230XS-R is a reduced-feature variant that exposes only TX, RX, RTS, CTS plus 4 GPIO (no DTR/DSR/DCD/RI). Both share the FT-X series USB 2.0 Full Speed core, internal clock, and 3 Mbaud capability. Use FT231X when you need DCD/RI/DSR; use FT230X for simpler debug-only consoles.
Can the FT231XS-R be used as a drop-in replacement for the FT232R?
The FT231XS-R is not a drop-in PCB replacement for the FT232R because the FT232R uses a 28-pin SSOP package and the FT231X uses a 20-pin SSOP. According to FTDI migration guidance, the FT231X has a smaller footprint, so the PCB must be redesigned. Functionally the FT231X is a superset of the FT232R UART features (full modem control, MTP instead of external EEPROM, no external crystal), but engineers should verify their schematic against the FT231X datasheet before substituting.
Where can I download the FT231XS-R datasheet PDF?
The FTDI FT231X datasheet (covering FT231XS-R and the rest of the FT231X family) is hosted at https://ftdichip.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/DS_FT231X.pdf. Per the manufacturer product page (ftdichip.com/products/ft231xs), the datasheet includes pinout, electrical characteristics, USB descriptors, MTP memory layout, and reference schematics. Application note AN_175 (Battery Charger Detection over USB with FT-X Devices) is also relevant.
What is the operating voltage of the FT231XS-R?
The FT231XS-R is powered from the USB VBUS pin at 4.5 V to 5.25 V (typical +5 V from USB). According to the FTDI FT231X datasheet, an internal 3.3 V LDO generates the chip's core voltage from VBUS, so the part does not require a separate 3.3 V supply. For designs that need 3.3 V VBUS, use the FT231XQ-R variant, which accepts 3.0 V to 3.6 V on VBUS instead.
What package does the FT231XS-R use?
The FT231XS-R ships in a 20-pin SSOP (Shrink Small Outline Package) with a 5.3 mm body width and 0.65 mm pin pitch. Per the FTDI FT231X datasheet, this package uses standard SSOP land patterns and is compatible with reflow soldering. The -R suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging for high-volume SMT assembly. Engineers targeting a QFN package should consider the FT231XQ-R (QFN-20).
Where to buy FT231XS-R online and what is the price?
The FT231XS-R is in stock at DigiKey (DigiKey part number 3029139), Mouser, LCSC Electronics (C132160), and Octopart-listed distributors as of 2026-10-08. Distributor pricing ranges from approximately $4.20 at qty 1 down to $2.34 at qty 1000 (LCSC starting price $3.02). Authorized stocking is healthy and lead time is typically 8-12 weeks from FTDI for new production orders.
Is FT231XS-R in stock and what is the lead time?
As of 2026-10-08, the FT231XS-R is reported in stock at multiple sources: DigiKey, Mouser, and LCSC (in-stock at LCSC). FTDI's own lead time for new production orders is typically 8-12 weeks according to current distributor pages. Inventory levels fluctuate; engineers should request a quote from authorized distributors for production volumes and verify lead time at order entry.
What is the best Silicon Labs equivalent for the FT231XS-R?
The best cross-brand equivalent for the FT231XS-R is the Silicon Labs CP2102N (e.g., CP2102N-A02-GQFN28R), a USB-to-UART bridge that supports 300 baud to 3 Mbaud with integrated USB transceiver and clock. Per the cross-reference search, CP2102N ships in QFN-28 (not pin-compatible with FT231X's SSOP-20), so it requires a PCB redesign, but its silicon cost is typically lower and Silicon Labs' driver library is mature on Windows/macOS/Linux.
FT231XS-R vs CP2102N - which is better for industrial USB-to-UART?
For industrial USB-to-UART with full modem control, the FT231XS-R (SSOP-20) and the Silicon Labs CP2102N (QFN-28) both deliver USB 2.0 Full Speed and 3 Mbaud. The FT231XS-R exposes DCD/RI/DSR modem lines natively and supports 4 GPIO multiplexed with modem lines; the CP2102N exposes fewer modem lines but offers lower typical BOM cost and a smaller QFN footprint. Choose FT231XS-R if you need SSOP-20 land pattern and full modem handshake; choose CP2102N if your board can accommodate QFN-28 and you prefer Silicon Labs' driver ecosystem.
When should I choose FT231XS-R over FT231XQ-R?
Choose the FT231XS-R when your USB VBUS rail is +5 V (typical desktop/laptop USB) and you need the SSOP-20 package for SMT assembly. Choose the FT231XQ-R when your design runs from a 3.3 V USB rail (rare, but used in some low-power hosts) or you prefer the QFN-20 package for tighter PCB layouts. Per FTDI's datasheet, both variants share identical USB and UART features; the difference is only VBUS input range and package style.
What is the best drop-in replacement for FT231XS-R in the SSOP-20 package?
The best drop-in replacement for the FT231XS-R in the SSOP-20 package is the FT231XS-U (tube packaging, same SSOP-20 footprint) or the FT231XS-R-REEL (tape-and-reel variant of the same die). Both share identical silicon and pinout, with the only difference being packaging media. For a different manufacturer, the WCH CH340C (SSOP-16, fewer pins) is NOT a drop-in replacement; the Silicon Labs CP2102N (QFN-28) is also NOT drop-in due to package change.
Does the FT231XS-R require an external crystal or EEPROM?
No. The FT231XS-R integrates a 48 MHz internal oscillator with PLL that derives the USB 12 MHz clock and the UART baud-rate generator, so no external crystal is required. According to the FTDI FT231X datasheet, the chip also integrates 1024 bytes of MTP (multi-time programmable) memory for VID/PID and descriptor storage, replacing the external EEPROM that older FT232R designs used. This reduces BOM cost and board area.
What are the key specifications engineers should know about the FT231XS-R for circuit design?
Engineers designing with the FT231XS-R should focus on these datasheet-verified specifications: USB 2.0 Full Speed at 12 Mbps; UART baud rates 300 to 3 Mbaud; full modem-control lines (RTS/CTS/DTR/DSR/DCD/RI); 4 multiplexed GPIO; VBUS 4.5 V to 5.25 V; internal 3.3 V LDO core; 8 mA typical active current and 125 uA suspend current; SSOP-20 package; -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature range; no external crystal required; integrated 1024-byte MTP memory. Drivers are royalty-free via FTDI VCP and D2XX libraries.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose the FT231XS-R when you need a USB-to-full-handshake-UART bridge in a 20-pin SSOP package with 5V VBUS and full modem-control lines (RTS/CTS/DTR/DSR/DCD/RI plus 4 GPIO). This is the workhorse FT-X series part for industrial dongles, debug consoles, and instrumentation probes. Choose FT231XQ-R instead if your host supplies 3.3V on VBUS. Choose FT230XS-R if you do not need DCD/RI/DSR (reduced modem-control). Choose FT234XD-R if you only need TX/RX with no flow control. All four share the same SSOP-20 footprint, enabling a single PCB layout to be repurposed across product variants by changing only the IC. For non-FTDI alternatives, consider Silicon Labs CP2102N (QFN-28, requires PCB redesign) or WCH CH340C (SSOP-16, fewer pins), accepting the cross-brand PCB rework cost.

Designhinweise

Route the USB D+ (pin 14) and D- (pin 15) pair as a 90-ohm differential trace with matched length and keep them away from switching nodes and clock lines. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to pin 1 (VCC) and another 4.7 uF bulk cap on pin 13 (VBUS). The exposed SSOP-20 lead frame requires no thermal pad, but keep ground pours continuous under the chip to provide a low-impedance return path for the USB differential pair. Per the FTDI FT231X datasheet reference schematic, the TEST pin (pin 17) must be tied to GND; the RESET pin (pin 16) is normally tied to VCC through a 10 kohm resistor but can be left floating in production.

Do not assume the FT231XS-R is pin-compatible with the older FT232R. The FT232R uses a 28-pin SSOP package while the FT231XS-R uses a 20-pin SSOP, so PCB land patterns cannot be reused. Do not omit the VBUS 4.7 uF bulk capacitor; the internal 3.3 V LDO requires sufficient bulk capacitance on VBUS to handle USB hot-plug inrush. Do not tie RESET low permanently or the chip will be held in reset. When migrating from CH340 or CP2102 designs, verify that GPIO4..GPIO7 multiplex assignments match because FTDI's GPIO map differs from WCH and Silicon Labs bridges.

For EMI compliance, place a common-mode choke or ferrite bead on the USB D+/D- traces if the enclosure is non-shielded, and add a USBLC6-2SC6 ESD protection array near the USB connector. Keep high-speed digital signals (UART TX/RX at 3 Mbaud) away from the USB differential pair. The VCC pin decoupling cap (100 nF X7R) should be no more than 2 mm from the pin to minimize inductance. If the board will be USB-IF certified, follow the USB 2.0 Full Speed layout checklist in the FT231X datasheet, including 90-ohm differential impedance and matched trace lengths within 150 mil.
