L6207PD Übersicht
What is a DMOS dual full-bridge motor driver? It is an integrated power stage that contains four power DMOS transistors arranged as two complete H-bridges, plus on-chip logic and current-control circuitry, used to bidirectionally drive DC motors, stepper motors, or solenoids from a single supply rail. Within the broader product hierarchy, the L6207PD sits in the motor driver IC family, which belongs to power management semiconductors, a category that also includes voltage regulators, gate drivers, and motor controllers.
Key features include a wide 8 V to 52 V operating supply range, 2.8 A continuous output current per bridge (with 5.6 A peak capability in PWM mode), on-chip dual independent constant-off-time PWM current controllers with programmable chopping, integrated non-dissipative overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown, and cross-conduction prevention logic. The BCD process combines isolated DMOS output transistors with CMOS and bipolar control circuitry on a single die, eliminating external gate-drive components and reducing PCB area.
The DMOS output stage achieves low on-resistance RDS(on) of approximately 0.3 ohm per switch, which directly improves efficiency and reduces conduction losses compared with bipolar Darlingtons predecessors. The integrated dual PWM current controllers enable precise torque regulation in stepper motors by chopping the phase current at a user-defined threshold set via an external sense resistor and RC network, eliminating the need for an external microcontroller PWM loop.
Typical applications include bipolar stepper motor drives, DC motor bidirectional control in industrial automation, positioning stages, and solenoid/valve drivers. The high 52 V supply tolerance also makes it suited for 24 V and 48 V industrial bus systems. The PowerSO-36 slug-up exposed pad package provides low thermal resistance, enabling continuous high-current operation with appropriate PCB copper area.
When designing with this part, the user must provide sense resistors on the SENSE pins, set the OFF time through the RC pin, and observe the absolute maximum supply of 60 V. Heat sinking via PCB copper or an external heatsink on the slug-up tab is essential at currents above 1.5 A per bridge to maintain junction temperature within the 150 C limit.

Typische Anwendungen
L6207PD ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Bipolar Stepper Motor Drive, DC Motor Bidirectional Drive, Industrial 24 V/48 V Actuator Control, Robotics Joint Motor Drive, Solenoid and Valve Driver, POS Printer and Cash Dispenser Motor Control.
Bipolar Stepper Motor Drive
The L6207PD's two integrated H-bridges are purpose-built for bipolar stepper motors in industrial positioning stages, 3D printers, and CNC auxiliaries. Each bridge delivers 2.8 A continuous and 5.6 A peak under PWM chopping, sufficient for NEMA 23 and smaller NEMA 34 steppers at 24-48 V bus. The on-chip dual constant-off-time PWM current controllers regulate phase current via external sense resistors, eliminating an external MCU control loop for torque control. The 8-52 V supply range covers 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V industrial rails with headroom.
Empfohlen
DC Motor Bidirectional Drive
The L6207PD drives brushed DC motors in both directions using one H-bridge per motor, with full torque control via the integrated PWM current regulator. With 2.8 A continuous and 5.6 A peak, it covers DC motors up to approximately 100 W mechanical output at 24 V. The wide 8-52 V supply supports both 12 V automotive accessory motors and 24 V/48 V industrial actuators. Cross-conduction prevention logic eliminates shoot-through, a common failure mode in discrete H-bridge designs.

Industrial 24 V/48 V Actuator Control
The L6207PD's 52 V absolute maximum supply rating suits 24 V and 48 V industrial bus systems used in factory automation, valve actuators, and solenoid drivers. Each H-bridge can switch inductive loads with the integrated flyback protection, controlling proportional valves and latching solenoids. The PowerSO-36 slug-up package provides robust thermal performance for panel-mount industrial controllers. The 150 C operating junction temperature supports high-ambient industrial enclosures.
Empfohlen
Robotics Joint Motor Drive
In robotic arm joints and pan-tilt mechanisms, the L6207PD drives small brushed DC gearmotors and bipolar steppers in compact form factors. The PowerSO-36 package has a low 15 C/W thermal resistance on a 4-layer JEDEC board, supporting 2-3 A continuous per bridge in dense robotic enclosures. The integrated current chopping simplifies torque control without burdening the central MCU, freeing CPU cycles for kinematics and trajectory planning. Both H-bridges can drive a single motor in parallel mode for higher current.
Empfohlen
Solenoid and Valve Driver
The L6207PD's H-bridges can drive proportional and latching solenoid valves at 24 V-48 V with full bidirectional current control. The integrated PWM current controller regulates solenoid pull-in and hold currents separately, reducing power dissipation and preventing coil overheating. The 5.6 A peak handles the high inrush current typical of solenoid pull-in, while the 2.8 A continuous covers the hold phase. Cross-conduction protection prevents accidental short circuits that could damage valve coils.

POS Printer and Cash Dispenser Motor Control
In POS printers, cash dispensers, and ATMs, the L6207PD drives paper feed stepper motors, cutter motors, and bill transport DC motors from a single 24 V supply. The two integrated H-bridges handle two independent motor channels, reducing BOM count versus discrete solutions. The constant-off-time PWM current control limits motor current precisely, reducing heat in enclosed ATMs. The PowerSO-36 footprint is compatible with previous-generation L62xx designs, enabling PCB reuse during upgrades.

Designhinweise
At 2.8 A continuous per bridge (5.6 A total) with RDS(on) of 0.3 ohm per switch, total conduction dissipation is approximately 9.4 W. According to the ST datasheet, the PowerSO-36 slug-up has theta-JA of about 15 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board with 4 square inches of copper. Estimated: at 25 C ambient with 4 sq-in copper, TJ reaches about 25 + 9.4 x 15 = 166 C, exceeding the 150 C limit. Required: substantial copper pour plus optional small heatsink on the slug-up tab, or derate continuous current to about 2 A per bridge.
Place the bootstrap capacitors (typically 100 nF) on VBOOT1/VBOOT2 as close to the IC pins as possible to minimize high-side gate-drive ringing. The sense resistors on SENSE1/SENSE2 should be Kelvin-connected to the GND pin and use a 4-terminal sense resistor for accurate current measurement. The RC pin components set the constant-off-time: t_off = R_off x C_off; typical values are R_off = 10-100 kohm and C_off = 1-10 nF for t_off in the 10-100 us range. Keep the RC traces short and shielded from switching node traces.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum supply of 60 V on VS; inductive transients from motor coils can ring above VS, so add a TVS diode or Zener clamp rated at 56 V across the supply. Do not enable both high-side and low-side switches on the same half-bridge simultaneously - the cross-conduction prevention logic prevents this, but external noise on the IN pins can still cause shoot-through if input traces are not properly debounced. The EN pins must be held low during power-up; floating EN pins may cause undefined bridge state. Verify the SENSE resistor power rating handles peak currents.
Compliance-Informationen
RoHS and REACH compliant per ST product page. PowerSO-36 is a lead-free package suitable for industrial and consumer applications. Not AEC-Q100 qualified - this part targets industrial automation, not automotive.
