MMA7261Q Übersicht

The NXP (formerly Freescale) MMA7261Q is a three-axis low-g capacitive micromachined accelerometer with selectable full-scale ranges of ±2.5g, ±3.3g, ±6.7g, and ±10g, supplied in a 16-pin QFN (6 mm x 6 mm) package. The device operates from a 2.2 V to 3.6 V supply, draws approximately 500 µA of operating current, and provides analog X, Y, and Z outputs with bandwidths of 350 Hz on the X and Y axes and 150 Hz on the Z axis. A g-Select logic interface allows the host MCU to dynamically switch between four sensitivities without changing external components.

An accelerometer is a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) sensor that measures proper acceleration along one or more axes and produces an electrical output proportional to the sensed force. The MMA7261Q belongs to the capacitive-sensing family of accelerometers (sibling to piezo-resistive types) in which a proof mass shifts relative to fixed capacitive plates under acceleration, converting deflection into a differential capacitance that the on-chip ASIC amplifies and outputs as an analog voltage. In the broader taxonomy it sits under motion sensors -> inertial sensors -> MEMS accelerometers -> semiconductor sensor ICs.

Key features include a 1-pole low-pass filter on each axis, on-chip temperature compensation to stabilize zero-g offset over -20 °C to +85 °C, a low-current Sleep Mode that drops consumption below 3 µA, and lead-free RoHS-compliant construction. The internal signal-conditioning ASIC drives a ratiometric analog output that scales with VDD, simplifying ADC interfacing on 3.3 V microcontrollers. The g-Select inputs (g-Select1, g-Select2) let the system trade dynamic range for resolution at runtime - useful for orientation detection that must remain accurate under both gentle motion and drop events.

Architecturally, the MMA7261Q uses a polysilicon surface-micromachined structure with a sealed cavity over the proof mass, paired with a chopper-stabilized gain stage that minimizes 1/f noise and temperature drift. The X and Y axes share one pair of capacitance plates per axis, while the Z axis uses a separate through-wafer structure, which accounts for its lower nominal bandwidth. The output is specified at the factory over temperature and laser-trimmed for sensitivity and zero-g offset.

Typical applications include tilt and orientation sensing in portable consumer electronics, hard-disk drive free-fall detection, gaming motion controllers, activity monitoring in fitness wearables, and anti-theft motion alarms. The wide dynamic range also suits industrial vibration monitoring on rotating equipment and shipping-condition monitoring in logistics tags. When designing with the MMA7261Q, place decoupling capacitors within 3 mm of VDD, keep the analog outputs away from switching nodes to preserve SNR, and add a 10 kΩ series resistor on each analog output if driving long cables.

Typische Anwendungen

MMA7261Q ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Tilt and Orientation Sensing in Mobile Devices, Hard-Disk Drive Free-Fall Detection, Gaming and Motion Controller Input, Fitness and Activity Monitoring Wearables, Anti-Theft and Security Motion Alarms, Industrial Vibration Monitoring of Rotating Equipment.

📱

Tilt and Orientation Sensing in Mobile Devices

The MMA7261Q measures gravity projection on X, Y, and Z axes with selectable ±2.5g to ±10g dynamic range, making it well suited to handheld tilt and orientation detection. In ±2.5g mode with a 3.3 V supply, full-scale output is roughly ±1.65 V around the VDD/2 = 1.65 V zero-g bias, giving about 666 mV per g of tilt and a 14-bit ADC can resolve sub-degree pitch/roll. Unlike digital-output MEMS ICs the MMA7261Q keeps MCU wakeups low by allowing direct analog threshold comparators for screen-rotation events, saving 10-50 mW of MCU computation. A 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor must be placed within 3 mm of VDD per Freescale application guidance. The 16-QFN footprint (6 × 6 mm) sits comfortably next to a power-management IC in a 50 mm × 25 mm cellphone PCB.

🖥️

Hard-Disk Drive Free-Fall Detection

The MMA7261Q's selectable sensitivity modes including ±10g allow hard-disk drive electronics to detect free-fall events of 500-800 ms duration and park the read/write heads before impact. With 350 Hz X/Y bandwidth and 150 Hz Z bandwidth the MMA7261Q catches the low-frequency acceleration signature of a falling laptop without aliasing the 5-15 Hz vibration of an impact event. Switching from ±2.5g to ±10g via g-Select logic just before the expected drop event preserves ADC resolution (15 mV/g vs 60 mV/g) and avoids saturating the analog output. The 500 µA typical operating current is acceptable for battery-powered applications, and the < 3 µA Sleep Mode current lets the HDD controller gate the part off when the disk is idle to extend battery life by 30-40 %.

🎮

Gaming and Motion Controller Input

The MMA7261Q provides triple-axis analog acceleration with the ±6.7g or ±10g sensitivity selected via g-Select for capturing the full dynamic range of hand and body motion in gaming controllers. The 350 Hz analog bandwidth on X and Y axes captures the 50-200 Hz spectral content of quick wrist flicks, while the lower 150 Hz Z-axis bandwidth is more than adequate for capturing the 5-20 Hz limb-swing spectral signature of movement cues. Latency from accelerometer to analog output pin is sub-millisecond, which is critical for real-time gesture control loops running at 100 Hz update rate. The 6 × 6 mm QFN-16 footprint and 1.45 mm package height drop directly into the MCU cluster of a wireless gamepad PCB. Compared to the analog MMA7261Q, newer digital-output parts like MMA8451Q reduce MCU ADC load but require extra firmware development.

🏃

Fitness and Activity Monitoring Wearables

The MMA7261Q is used in early-generation fitness bands and pedometers to count steps and detect activity intensity using ±2.5g or ±3.3g modes. Its 350 Hz X/Y bandwidth captures the 1-3 Hz step-cadence spectral peaks without aliasing, and the analog outputs feed a low-power MCU ADC running at 25-50 Hz with ODR software averaging. The < 3 µA Sleep Mode current lets the activity monitor stay on a single coin-cell battery for 6-12 months by waking the MCU only when motion exceeds a comparator threshold tied to the Xout or Yout pin. Although newer parts like MMA9555L (built-in pedometer state machine) replace this MCU + accelerometer architecture, the MMA7261Q remains useful for cost-sensitive wearables. A 10 kΩ series resistor on each analog output isolates the MEMS from RF noise coupled through the body-worn antenna.

🎥

Anti-Theft and Security Motion Alarms

Anti-theft motion alarms and asset-tamper detectors use the MMA7261Q to monitor the orientation and vibration profile of valuable equipment when unattended. With selectable sensitivity modes, the alarm system can use ±2.5g to detect gentle tilting of artwork or a laptop but switch to ±10g to capture the high-energy shock of forced entry or a hammer strike. The 1-pole low-pass filter on each axis suppresses RF interference from nearby walkie-talkies or cellphones. The exposed-pad QFN-16 package provides stable thermal coupling to the housing so the zero-g offset stays within the ±0.5 %FS temperature coefficient across the -20 °C to +85 °C industrial range. A 0.1 µF decoupling capacitor close to the supply pin and a 1 µF tantalum bulk capacitor on the host 3.3 V rail is recommended by Freescale for alarm installations near noisy motors.

🏭

Industrial Vibration Monitoring of Rotating Equipment

The MMA7261Q handles industrial vibration monitoring on motors, pumps, and fans with frequency content up to 350 Hz. The ±10g range covers the typical 5-10 g RMS vibration levels found on consumer-grade rotating equipment before bearing failure. Its 1-pole low-pass filter and chopper-stabilized signal conditioning reduce 1/f noise and temperature drift to ±0.5 %FS, which is critical for trend analysis over multi-year deployments in plants. The exposed thermal pad of the 16-QFN package allows direct heat-sinking to the equipment chassis, keeping junction temperature within the -20 °C to +85 °C operating range even in enclosed industrial cabinets. Compared to industrial-grade piezoelectric vibration sensors, the MMA7261Q consumes only 500 µA and can be powered from a single 3.3 V PLC output, eliminating the need for charge amplifier circuits.

What is the MMA7261Q and what does it measure?
The MMA7261Q is a 3-axis low-g capacitive micromachined accelerometer from NXP (formerly Freescale) that measures proper acceleration on the X, Y, and Z axes. According to the Freescale datasheet, it provides user-selectable full-scale ranges of ±2.5g, ±3.3g, ±6.7g, or ±10g selected via two g-Select logic inputs, with 350 Hz analog bandwidth on X and Y and 150 Hz on Z.
What is the operating supply voltage range of the MMA7261Q?
The MMA7261Q operates from 2.2 V to 3.6 V single supply as stated in the NXP product listing on Mouser. The analog X, Y, Z outputs are ratiometric with VDD, so a 3.3 V MCU ADC reference tied to VDD yields a direct g-to-LSB conversion without additional scaling. A 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of VDD is the standard recommendation.
Is the MMA7261Q RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes, the MMA7261Q is RoHS compliant and lead-free per the DigiChip specifications page that lists Lead Free Status: Lead Free and RoHS Status: RoHS Compliant. The package construction uses lead-free finishes suitable for reflow profiles up to 260 °C peak temperature, with MSL2 typical moisture sensitivity.
What is the current lifecycle status of the MMA7261Q and why is it obsolete?
The MMA7261Q is currently obsolete as of October 2026. The Xecor comparison page lists Product Status: Obsolete for both the MMA7261Q and its MMA7261QR2 reel-code variant. NXP has discontinued the part in favor of newer MMA-series accelerometers such as MMA8451Q (digital I²C) and MMA7361L, which offer higher accuracy and digital interfaces. Existing inventory remains available through distributors like Rochester Electronics.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MMA7261Q?
The best drop-in footprint replacement is the MMA7260Q from NXP, which is the lower-resolution predecessor sharing the same 16-QFN (6 × 6 mm) package and pinout but with a fixed ±1.5g range. If the selectable g-ranges are needed, the MMA7361L is the same-family successor with 1.5g/6g selectable ranges in a pin-compatible QFN-14/LGA footprint in NXP's newer portfolio.
MMA7261Q vs MMA7260Q - what is the difference?
The MMA7261Q provides four user-selectable sensitivity ranges (±2.5g / ±3.3g / ±6.7g / ±10g) controlled by g-Select logic inputs, while the MMA7260Q offers a single fixed ±1.5g sensitivity without g-Select. Both share the 16-QFN (6 × 6 mm) package, 2.2-3.6 V supply range, and analog output structure, making them pin-compatible alternatives if your application can work within ±1.5g.
What is the current price of the MMA7261Q and is it in stock?
As of 2026-10-15, the MMA7261Q is priced around $4.45-$6.95 per unit depending on quantity break based on Octopart distributor data. Stock is limited because the part is obsolete; Rochester Electronics and select NXP franchised distributors typically hold residual inventory. Lead times vary from immediate shipment to 12-16 weeks once distributor stock is exhausted.
Where can I buy the MMA7261Q online?
The MMA7261Q can be purchased online from NXP authorized distributors including DigiKey, Mouser, Octopart-listed resellers, and obsolete-stock specialists such as Rochester Electronics and Avnet. Octopart currently lists three distributors for this MPN. Verify RoHS compliance and date code (preferred 2018 or later) before sourcing from independent brokers.
Where can I download the MMA7261Q datasheet PDF?
The official NXP-hosted MMA7261Q datasheet PDF is available at https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/data-sheet/MMA7261Q.pdf as well as from the legacy Freescale document mirror sites. The datasheet contains electrical characteristics, mechanical drawings, application circuit examples, soldering profiles, and the g-Select truth table required to program the four sensitivity modes.
What is the pinout of the MMA7261Q 16-QFN package?
The MMA7261Q 16-QFN package uses the following pinout: pin 1 VDD, pin 2 g-Select2, pin 3 g-Select1, pin 4 Sleep Mode, pin 5-7 g-Cell test/N/C, pin 8 GND, pin 9-10 N/C, pin 11 Zout, pin 12 Yout, pin 13 Xout, pins 14-15 N/C, pin 16 VDD. The exposed thermal pad is internally tied to ground and must be soldered to the PCB ground plane for mechanical stability.
Can the MMA7261Q be used for tilt sensing applications?
Yes, the MMA7261Q is well suited to tilt sensing and orientation detection because its analog outputs give a direct DC voltage proportional to the gravity vector on each axis. In ±2.5g mode with a 3.3 V supply, full-scale output is roughly ±1.65 V around the zero-g bias of VDD/2 = 1.65 V, giving about 666 mV per g of tilt. Using g-Select to switch to ±10g during drop events preserves headroom without sacrificing tilt resolution.
How much current does the MMA7261Q consume in sleep mode?
The MMA7261Q consumes less than 3 µA of supply current in Sleep Mode when the Sleep input is pulled logic-high, compared to 500 µA typical in active operating mode per the NXP datasheet. Sleep mode disables the analog outputs and g-Cell bias, allowing battery-powered devices to leave the accelerometer mostly inactive and wake it only on external interrupts. Wake-up time is typically 1-2 ms.
What microcontrollers interface well with the MMA7261Q analog outputs?
The MMA7261Q's three analog outputs (X, Y, Z) interface directly with any 10-12-bit ADC on a 3.3 V microcontroller such as NXP Kinetis KE-series, STM32F0/F4, Microchip PIC18F, or ESP32. Best ADC accuracy requires using VDD as the ADC reference so the ratiometric g-to-LSB conversion holds across supply variation. Add a 10 kΩ series resistor on each output to isolate the MEMS from MCU input pin capacitance during long PCB traces.
Is there an equivalent cross-brand accelerometer with the same pinout?
There is no widely established cross-brand accelerometer with true drop-in equivalence to the MMA7261Q's 16-QFN (6 × 6) pinout because the g-Select logic and bandwidth split (350/150 Hz) are NXP-specific design choices. Cross-brand pin-compatible alternatives (Analog Devices ADXL335, ST LIS3DH) use different packages and pinouts and require PCB rework. They are not drop-in replacements but can serve as functional substitutes after redesign.
What is the best drop-in pin-compatible replacement within the NXP MMA family?
Within the NXP MMA family, the best drop-in pin-compatible replacement is the MMA7361L for designs that can accept ±1.5g / ±6g selectable ranges instead of ±2.5g / ±3.3g / ±6.7g / ±10g. The MMA7361L retains the g-Select two-pin control philosophy and operates from the same 2.2-3.6 V supply. Designers who prefer a digital interface should consider the MMA8451Q, though it requires PCB rework and firmware changes for I²C.

Designhinweise

Decouple VDD with a 0.1 µF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of pin 1 (and pin 16 which is tied to VDD internally) following the Freescale/NXP reference layout. Add a 1 µF tantalum or 10 µF ceramic bulk capacitor on the 3.3 V rail within 10 mm. Place the analog Xout/Yout/Zout traces over a continuous ground plane, away from switching nodes and high-impedance digital lines. The exposed thermal pad of the 16-QFN must be soldered to a 4 mm × 4 mm copper pad connected to ground for mechanical stability and to keep junction-to-ambient thermal resistance within datasheet bounds.

Insert a 10 kΩ series resistor in series with each of Xout, Yout, and Zout when driving PCB traces longer than 50 mm. The series resistor isolates the MEMS output stage from the capacitive load of the trace + ADC input pin capacitance (typically 8-12 pF), which would otherwise form an RC pole that drops the 350 Hz X/Y bandwidth below the datasheet spec. For best noise performance, add a 1 nF to 10 nF capacitor between each analog output and ground close to the ADC pin to form an RC anti-aliasing filter at roughly 1.6 kHz corner. ESD: the analog outputs are sensitive to ±2 kV HBM ESD strikes during handling.

Do not connect the N/C pins (pins 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 15) to anything except high impedance - they are internal test points reserved for the Freescale production test, and pulling them externally can disturb the zero-g offset calibration. The g-Select1 and g-Select2 logic levels are VDD-relative; never drive them from a 5 V MCU on a 3.3 V supply or you will overstress the input clamp diodes (typical absolute max is VDD + 0.3 V). Sleep Mode current drops below 3 µA only when Sleep is driven logic-high cleanly, not with a 100 kΩ pull-up resistor that may allow leakage. Do not exceed 3000 g mechanical shock - the MEMS proof mass stops are not designed for drop events beyond absolute max specification.
