PIC18LF45K42-I/P Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF45K42-I/P is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller from the PIC18F K42 family, featuring a 64MHz CPU, 32KB of Flash program memory and 2KB of RAM, housed in a 40-pin PDIP through-hole package. Built on Microchip's eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology platform, this device integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), a 12-bit ADC, on-chip Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller, and vectored interrupts to deliver fast processing with reduced CPU load. Operating from 1.8V to 3.6V, the LF variant is optimized for low-voltage F-series operation.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash/RAM), and programmable I/O peripherals onto one die. Within the embedded system hierarchy, the PIC18LF45K42-I/P sits in the 8-bit RISC MCU tier and is widely used in cost-sensitive, low-power industrial and consumer designs. The PIC18F K42 family is the modern successor to the K22 and K40 families, introducing configurable logic cells, a hardware DMA engine, and improved CIP blocks that let peripherals operate without waking the CPU.

Key features include 32KB (16K x 16) Flash, 2KB SRAM, 256 bytes EEPROM, 36 I/O pins, a 12-bit differential ADC with computation, multiple PWM outputs, and configurable logic cells. Peripherals include UART, SPI, I2C, CLC, and a high-resolution 16-bit PWM. The integrated DMA enables data movement between memory and peripherals without CPU intervention, sharply lowering active-mode current and enabling deterministic analog sampling.

Typical applications include low-power IoT sensor nodes, industrial control and HMI boards, automotive body controllers, USB-to-UART bridges, sensor conditioning front-ends, and small home appliances. The wide 1.8V-3.6V operating range makes the LF variant suitable for 2xAA/2xAAA battery-powered designs where quiescent current and brown-out behavior dominate BOM decisions.

When designing with this MCU, ensure decoupling: 100nF on every VDD pin plus a bulk 10uF on the main rail. For sleep-mode operation, leverage the LF variant's nanoWatt XLP peripherals (RTC, WDT, BOR) to draw sub-microamp standby current; the standard F variant (PIC18F45K42-I/P) does not reach this low-power regime at the same supply voltage. The 40-PDIP package is recommended for hand-prototyping and educational use, while the QFN variants suit volume SMD assemblies.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC18LF45K42-I/P ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Low-Power IoT Sensor Nodes, Industrial Control and HMI Boards, Automotive Body Controllers, Sensor Conditioning Front-Ends, USB-to-UART Bridge Dongle, Small Home Appliances.

🧩

Low-Power IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC18LF45K42-I/P is well matched to battery-powered IoT sensor nodes that must run for years on a coin cell or 2xAA pack. The 1.8V-3.6V LF voltage range enables direct Li-ion or alkaline-battery connection, while the XLP nanoWatt peripherals (RTC, WDT, BOR) hold standby current below 1 uA. Hardware DMA between the 12-bit ADC and a UART/I2C peripheral lets the CPU stay asleep while sensor samples stream out, dramatically lowering average power. The 32 KB Flash is roomy enough for a LoRaWAN or BLE-through-external-transceiver stack plus on-board sensor drivers. Compared to the K22 generation, the K42's CLC blocks can implement glue logic (sensor wakeup pulse chains) without external gates.

🏭

Industrial Control and HMI Boards

The PIC18LF45K42-I/P fits 3.3V industrial control boards where 36 I/O pins, a 12-bit ADC, and multiple UART/SPI/I2C ports are needed in a through-hole form factor for easy field-replacement. The hardware DMA can move ADC samples into memory while the CPU executes the control loop, keeping deterministic sample timing. The CIP blocks (CLC, CWG) can drive half-bridges or generate non-overlapping PWM without software intervention, offloading critical timing from the CPU. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade is sufficient for most indoor industrial enclosures; only extreme-temperature applications need the -E variant.

🚗

Automotive Body Controllers

The PIC18LF45K42-I/P serves as a body controller MCU for non-safety-critical automotive subsystems: ambient lighting controllers, mirror actuators, door modules, and interior sensor hubs. The CIP-driven peripherals enable the CPU to spend most of its time asleep, drawing under 1 uA standby current - essential for parked-vehicle battery endurance. The 12-bit differential ADC handles thermistor bridges and current-shunt monitoring for LED strings. For AEC-Q100 Grade 0 or Grade 1 requirements, designers should select PIC18F45K42-I/P automotive-grade variants or migrate to the PIC18F46K42 series. The K42 DMA engine keeps CAN/LIN message timing deterministic.

🔧

Sensor Conditioning Front-Ends

In sensor conditioning front-ends - strain gauges, RTD conditioning, pH probes - the PIC18LF45K42-I/P runs the 12-bit differential ADC with computation, performing hardware averaging and threshold detection without CPU wakeups. The DMA moves ADC results directly into SRAM, freeing the CPU for calibration math and digital filtering. The CLC blocks can implement hysteresis comparators and window-watchdog logic on-chip. The 2 KB SRAM is sufficient for moving-average and notch filters; the 32 KB Flash holds calibration tables and serial-protocol stacks. Engineers building precision analog front-ends pair this MCU with external low-noise op-amps.

🔧

USB-to-UART Bridge Dongle

The PIC18LF45K42-I/P is NOT suitable as a USB-to-UART bridge because it lacks a USB peripheral. Engineers looking for a USB bridge should use PIC18F4550-I/P or PIC18F25K50-I/SO, both of which include USB 2.0 full-speed and transceiver blocks. The K42 family is for non-USB applications; the K42 datasheet does not document any USB peripheral on this die. If the goal is a small, USB-powered MCU, the PIC18F4550 family remains the canonical choice at the same 40-PDIP footprint.

🏭

Small Home Appliances

The PIC18LF45K42-I/P powers small home appliances - coffee makers, blenders, slow cookers, air purifiers - where the 12-bit ADC reads temperature probes, the CWG generates motor PWM, and the UART/SPI displays user interface feedback. The 1.8V-3.6V LF range suits direct battery backup for clock/timer retention. The 64 MHz CPU handles simple LCD/LED matrix driving with multiplexed I/O. The CLC implements button-debounce and safety-interlock logic on-chip, reducing BOM cost. Through-hole PDIP simplifies hand-soldering and field-service repair.

PIC18LF45K42-I/P vs PIC18LF45K40-I/P - which should I pick?
Choose PIC18LF45K42-I/P if you need 32 KB Flash, 2 KB RAM, 12-bit ADC with computation, hardware DMA, and the full K42 CIP set (CLC, CWG, NCO). Choose PIC18LF45K40-I/P if 16 KB Flash, 1 KB RAM, and a simpler K40 peripheral set suffice. Both share the 40-PDIP package and 64 MHz CPU. The K42 is the recommended choice for new designs; the K40 is a cost-down option for cost-sensitive legacy designs.
PIC18LF45K42-I/P vs PIC18F45K42-I/P - what is the difference?
The PIC18LF45K42-I/P operates from 1.8V to 3.6V (low-voltage F-series), while the PIC18F45K42-I/P operates from 2.3V to 5.5V (standard F-series). Both share the same Flash/RAM/EEPROM (32KB/2KB/256B), the same 40-PDIP package, the same pinout, and the same 64 MHz CPU. Choose LF for 3.3V or battery-powered designs; choose F for 5V-tolerant systems or systems using a 5V supply rail.
Is PIC18LF45K42-I/P drop-in compatible with PIC18F45K22-I/P?
No, the PIC18LF45K42-I/P is NOT drop-in compatible with PIC18F45K22-I/P. Although both share the 40-PDIP package, the K42 family introduces new peripherals (DMA, CLC, 12-bit ADC with computation) and renames several SFRs compared to the K22. Firmware must be recompiled against the K42 header files; the K22 firmware will not boot on a K42 device. Verify the pinout before swapping - some peripheral pins have moved.
Can I use PIC18LF45K42-E/P as a drop-in replacement for PIC18LF45K42-I/P?
Yes. The PIC18LF45K42-E/P and PIC18LF45K42-I/P share the same 40-PDIP package, pinout, and electrical specifications. The only difference is the temperature grade: -E/P is the extended temperature range (-40C to +125C), while -I/P is industrial (-40C to +85C). Drop-in is safe in either direction for designs within -40C to +85C; only upgrade -I to -E for high-temperature environments.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose PIC18LF45K42-I/P when you need a 40-pin through-hole 8-bit MCU with 32 KB Flash, 2 KB SRAM, 12-bit ADC, hardware DMA, and Core Independent Peripherals operating from 1.8V-3.6V. This part is the canonical choice for new K42-family designs in the through-hole form factor (educational kits, prototyping, field-serviceable industrial boards). For extended temperature range, select PIC18LF45K42-E/P (drop-in, -40C to +125C). For cost-down applications where 16 KB Flash and 1 KB RAM suffice, select PIC18LF45K40-I/P (drop-in, K40 family). For 5V system designs, select PIC18F45K42-I/P (drop-in, 2.3V-5.5V). For a smaller-footprint SMD upgrade on the same die, use PIC18LF45K42-I/MV (QFN) - but this requires PCB rework. None of the same-brand drop-in alternatives change the 40-PDIP footprint.

Designhinweise

Place 100nF ceramic decoupling capacitors on every VDD pin (pins 11 and 32) as close to the IC as possible, with traces shorter than 5 mm. Add a bulk 10uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor on the main 3.3V rail within 25 mm of the MCU. For battery-powered designs, the LF variant's 1.8V minimum enables operation down to a single Li-ion cell at end-of-discharge; pair with an external supervisor or use the internal BOR for safe reset behavior under brown-out.

Through-hole 40-PDIP layouts should reserve a standard 0.1-inch (2.54mm) row pitch with 0.6mm drill holes and 1.0mm annular rings. Keep the ICSP/ICD header (PGEC2/PGED2 on RB6/RB7) accessible for in-circuit debugging. Place a 4.7k ohm pull-up on MCLR (pin 1) to VDD to prevent spurious resets; do not connect MCLR directly to VDD without a resistor. Separate analog traces (RA/RC analog-capable pins) from digital switching traces to minimize ADC crosstalk.

Do not exceed 3.6V on any VDD pin of the LF variant - applying 5V will permanently damage the device. If the system bus is 5V, use the F variant (PIC18F45K42-I/P) instead. When migrating firmware from PIC18F45K22 to PIC18LF45K42, recompile against the K42 device header files; the K22 SFR layout differs significantly. The K42 datasheet must be consulted for the PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) mapping - peripheral functions are NOT fixed to specific pins as on legacy PIC devices.

Estimated: at 64 MHz CPU clock and 3.3V supply, total pin-drive current should not exceed the sum of source/sink ratings per I/O bank. Spread high-current I/O across banks to stay within the 100 mA per-port limit. Route crystal or external clock traces within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins, guard-traced to ground, and keep them away from switching traces. For low-EMI designs, use the internal 16 MHz HFINTOSC instead of an external crystal when timing tolerance allows.
