MC9S08AW32VFUE Descripción general

The NXP MC9S08AW32VFUE is a 40 MHz 8-bit microcontroller unit (MCU) from the HCS08 family with 32KB of on-chip Flash, packaged in a 64-pin QFP (14x14 mm). It integrates the enhanced S08 CISC core, 2KB of RAM, a 12-channel 10-bit ADC, multiple timers, and a wide array of serial interfaces.

An 8-bit MCU is a programmable computing engine that fetches and executes instructions from on-chip memory; the HCS08 core is a Von Neumann architecture with a 16-bit address space and an enhanced instruction set targeting low-power, deterministic embedded control. Within the broader taxonomy, this part is an MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor device. The S08 family is widely adopted in industrial and automotive subsystems where deterministic real-time response and on-chip analog integration outweigh raw compute throughput.

Key features of the MC9S08AW32VFUE include 32KB of Flash program memory, 2KB of RAM, an internal clock synthesizer supporting bus rates up to 20 MHz, an integrated 10-bit ADC with up to 12 input channels, multiple PWM-capable timers, an SPI module, two SCI (UART) modules, and an I2C module. Operation from 2.7V to 5.5V supply allows direct compatibility with both 3.3V and 5V systems.

The S08 core uses a Harvard-style instruction pipeline and supports background debug mode (BDM) via a single-wire interface, enabling in-circuit programming and non-intrusive debug. The peripheral set includes a real-time counter (RTC), a computer operating properly (COP) watchdog, low-voltage detect (LVD) with reset, and multiple general-purpose I/O ports. The Flash controller supports in-application reprogramming with built-in security for code protection.

Typical applications include industrial control, automotive body and chassis modules, consumer appliances, sensor signal conditioning, and motor control (PWM-driven). The integrated ADC and timers make it suitable for closed-loop temperature, pressure, and flow regulation.

When designing with this MCU, allocate ground and supply decoupling close to every VDD/VSS pair (typically 100 nF + bulk capacitor) and keep the BDM pin accessible for production programming. For automotive deployments, observe NXP's EMC and ESD guidelines for body electronics.

🏭

Industrial Control Modules

Why the MC9S08AW32VFUE fits: Industrial modules demand deterministic 8-bit processing, robust peripheral integration, and wide supply tolerance - the S08AW delivers 40 MHz core, 32 KB Flash for control firmware, 2 KB RAM for stack/buffers, and a 10-bit ADC with 12 channels for sensor conditioning across 2.7-5.5 V. How it is used: Typically placed on a 4-layer industrial backplane, paired with a 100 nF decoupling per VDD pin and a 10 uF bulk capacitor. The COP watchdog and LVD reset deliver the supervisory chain required for IEC 61131-3 industrial PLC I/O cards and process controllers.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics

Why the MC9S08AW32VFUE fits: The -40 C to +105 C operating range covers cabin and body-domain ECUs (RKE, BCM, seat controllers, HVAC). The 40 MHz S08 core and dual PWM timers drive small DC motors for mirror/glass adjustment, and the 10-bit ADC reads temperature, current, and switch inputs. How it is used: Usually sits behind a 12 V TVS-protected supply and a CAN/sci bridge, with capacitor-backed LVD reset handling engine cranking transients. The HCS08 peripheral set is well-documented for AEC-regulated automotive subsystems.

🏠

Consumer Appliance Control

Why the MC9S08AW32VFUE fits: White goods (washing machines, dishwashers, HVAC thermostats) need reliable keypad/LED drivers, motor PWM, and serial supervisory links - all present on the S08AW. The 32 KB Flash holds the user interface and PI control loops, while the 2 KB SRAM holds timing variables without external memory. How it is used: Often paired with a triac/relay driver board; the MCU's two TPM modules generate zero-cross PWM and the SCI is used for diagnostic/UART connectivity to a service tool during field repair.

📡

Sensor Signal Conditioning

What is the core architecture and clock frequency of the MC9S08AW32VFUE?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE is built on the NXP HCS08 (S08) CISC core and runs up to 40 MHz internal bus frequency (20 MHz maximum peripheral bus rate). The S08 core is an enhanced 8-bit architecture descended from the HC08 family, adding a BDM debug interface and reduced-power modes. This combination targets deterministic embedded control in industrial and automotive applications.
How much Flash and RAM does the MC9S08AW32VFUE have?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE integrates 32 KB of on-chip Flash program memory and 2 KB of RAM. The Flash is organized as 32K x 8 and supports in-application reprogramming and a configurable security lock. The 2 KB SRAM is sufficient for typical HCS08 control stacks; for larger buffers, designers must move data to external memory or step down to a smaller code footprint.
What is the difference between MC9S08AW32VFUE and MC9S08AW60CFUE?
Both belong to the same S08AW 64-QFP family and are pin-compatible. The AW32 has 32 KB Flash / 2 KB RAM while the AW60 has 60 KB Flash / 2 KB RAM. They share the HCS08 core, ADC, timers, and peripheral map, so the AW60 is a direct upgrade drop-in when larger code space is needed. Both operate across 2.7 V to 5.5 V.
Is the MC9S08AW32VFUE still in production?
According to the NXP product page, the MC9S08AW32VFUE is marked NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs). Existing inventory remains available through NXP's authorized distributors, but NXP recommends migrating designs to the S08P or Kinetis E families for new programs.
What is the supply voltage range of the MC9S08AW32VFUE?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V. This wide range allows direct deployment on both 3.3 V and 5 V rails without additional level translation. An internal voltage regulator generates the core supply, while the I/O ring scales automatically based on VDD. A low-voltage detect (LVD) circuit asserts reset below the configured threshold.
Can the MC9S08AW32VFUE be used in automotive designs?
Yes. NXP lists the S08AW family as supporting both industrial and automotive segments, including body, chassis, and HVAC subsystems. For under-hood or powertrain applications, choose the S12 family or a Kinetis part with extended temperature rating. The AW32 operating range of -40 C to +105 C is suitable for cabin and under-dash automotive ECUs.
What peripheral interfaces does the MC9S08AW32VFUE include?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE provides 1 SPI, 2 SCI (UART), 1 I2C, two TPM (Timer/PWM) modules, a 10-bit ADC with up to 12 channels, a real-time interrupt module, and an RTC. The peripheral set covers most low-speed control applications: sensor sampling, motor PWM, keypad input, and peer-to-peer networking with another MCU via SCI.
Where can I download the MC9S08AW32VFUE datasheet PDF?
The official datasheet is published on the NXP website. The HCS08AW family reference manual (document MC9S08AW60RM) and the data sheet (covering AW16, AW32, AW48, AW60) are available at https://www.nxp.com. The data sheet is shared across the family because the parts differ only in memory density, so a single document covers AW32 specifications.
What package does the MC9S08AW32VFUE use?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE is supplied in a 64-pin QFP (14 x 14 mm, 0.8 mm pitch) designated by the 'VFUE' suffix. This is the most pin-rich member of the S08AW family and exposes all 54 GPIO plus power, ground, reset, and BDM pins. A 64-LQFP variant (CFGE) and a 48-LQFP variant are available for code-compatible downgrades.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MC9S08AW32VFUE?
The MC9S08AW32CFUE is the same die and code-compatible alternative in the 64-LQFP package footprint, sharing identical peripheral maps and pinout, differing only in package height/thickness. For more headroom, the MC9S08AW60CFUE provides 60 KB Flash on the same pins. Both are recommended for new boards when the VFUE package becomes constrained.
What is the price of the MC9S08AW32VFUE in 2026?
As of 2026-10-21, distributor pricing for the MC9S08AW32VFUE is approximately $9.80 at qty 1, dropping to $6.40 at qty 1000. NRND status typically shifts inventory to authorized distributors and the open market; lead time extends to 12-16 weeks during the NRND transition. Volume buyers should confirm price and availability directly with their franchised distributor.
Is the MC9S08AW32VFUE lead-free and RoHS compliant?
Yes, the MC9S08AW32VFUE is lead-free and RoHS compliant per NXP's product documentation. The 'V' suffix in the part number indicates lead-free terminal finish. The device is also REACH-compliant; no hazardous substances above thresholds are present. Conflict-mineral reporting is provided through NXP's standard corporate policies.
How does the MC9S08AW32VFUE compare to the S9S08AW8AE0MLC?
Both share the S08AW family and are NRND. The AW32 provides 32 KB Flash versus 8 KB on the AW8E0MLC, but the latter ships in an LQFP-64 with slightly different package terminations. For designs where AW32 inventory is unavailable, the AW8E0MLC requires code compression but stays in the same peripheral family. Designers should plan a long-term migration to a Cortex-M0+ alternative.
What debug interface does the MC9S08AW32VFUE use?
The MC9S08AW32VFUE uses the NXP Background Debug Mode (BDM) interface on dedicated BKGD and RESET pins. BDM allows non-intrusive register inspection, single-stepping, and in-circuit programming using a low-cost P&E Multilink or P&E Cyclone programmer. No on-chip JTAG is provided; all development is done through BDM.
When should I choose MC9S08AW32VFUE over a newer MCU?
Choose the MC9S08AW32VFUE for legacy replacement, field retrofits, and designs with existing HCS08 firmware that must be preserved. For new designs requiring more Flash, more RAM, USB, CAN, or a wider ADC, step up to the Kinetis KE02 or S08PA family. The HCS08 toolchain, BDM, and code base are highly mature, so the AW32 remains attractive when code reuse is valued over modern features.

Guía de selección

Choose the MC9S08AW32VFUE for legacy designs and field retrofits that require exact 64-QFP (14x14 mm) packaging and a wide operating temperature range to +105 C. For new boards without a strict pin-stack requirement, the MC9S08AW32CFUE (LQFP-64) is a code-compatible alternative that is currently Active and offers stronger supply. If your firmware exceeds 32 KB, the MC9S08AW60CFUE (60 KB Flash) or MC9S08AW48CFGER (48 KB Flash) are direct upgrades on the same family. For ultra-low-cost designs where Flash size can be reduced, the S9S08AW8AE0MLC is an alternate in the same family but with only 8 KB of Flash. All five parts share the same HCS08 tool chain (BDM, CodeWarrior), so BDM probe and ICE hardware are reusable across designs.

Notas de diseño

Estimated: The S08AW has three VDD/VSS pairs (Vpp=5V). Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD/VSS pair, plus a single 10 uF bulk capacitor on the board. Decoupling path inductance matters more than absolute capacitance above 40 MHz core speed. For 5V operation NXP recommends a linear regulator with <50 mV ripple; switching regulators require a Pi-filter (LC) to prevent MCU core noise coupling.

Route the BKGD/DEBUG pin away from high-current switching traces; AC-couple noise on BKGD can disrupt in-circuit programming. Maintain 50 ohm impedance on the BDM cable for production-line reliability. The 64-QFP at 14x14 mm has 0.8 mm pitch; use a 4-layer PCB with 5-7 mil traces/5-7 mil spaces on outer layers to fan out from pads. Add a copper pour connected to VSS beneath the chip and stitch it to ground vias around the periphery for thermal dissipation and shielding.

Do not leave the RESET pin floating: tie to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor with a 100 nF capacitor to ground for noise immunity, OR drive it with a dedicated supervisor. NRND does not mean defective - S08AW parts still reach production volumes, but lead time may stretch to 12-16 weeks. Validate alternate sources (NXP authorised distributor) in your BOM before committing new designs. Watch Flash write timing carefully: in-application programming needs the recommended 4.5 V min VDD for guaranteed writes below 0 C.

The HCS08 core has tight ADC sample timing; keep the analog and digital grounds separate and join at a single star point near the MCU VSS3 (pin 64). The ADC reference pins VREFH/VREFL should each have a 100 nF ceramic plus a 10 uF bypass capacitor - omitting the bulk capacitor introduces temperature drift above 80 C. For 10-bit absolute accuracy at full sampling rate (240 kHz), keep analog trace length to the ADC pins under 25 mm.
