MCIMX6L2EVN10AA Descripción general

The NXP MCIMX6L2EVN10AA is an ARM Cortex-A9 microprocessor from the i.MX 6SoloLite (i.MX6SL "Megrez") application processor family, integrating a single 32-bit core running up to 1.0 GHz in a 432-ball MAPBGA package measuring 13 mm x 13 mm. It is targeted at cost-sensitive, low-power human-machine interface (HMI) and consumer applications where single-core performance and a rich multimedia footprint are sufficient.

A microprocessor (MPU) is a CPU-centric integrated circuit that integrates one or more processor cores, cache, memory controller, and a wide range of peripheral controllers into a single System-on-Chip package, sitting one level above a microcontroller (which typically integrates on-chip flash) and below a fully discrete CPU. Within the i.MX family hierarchy, the i.MX6SL places below the dual-core i.MX6DL and quad-core i.MX6Q/6QP variants, targeting read-intensive HMI, e-reader, and portable multimedia designs.

Key features include a 32-bit ARM Cortex-A9 core with NEON media extensions, an integrated L1/L2 cache hierarchy, hardware video accelerators for H.264 decode and 2D graphics, multiple display and camera interfaces, USB 2.0 with integrated PHY, Gigabit Ethernet MAC, and rich connectivity (UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, PWM, SD/eMMC). The 432-MAPBGA package provides a low-impedance power/ground network for the high-frequency core logic.

The part uses a 40 nm low-power CMOS process with integrated power management that supports dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), multiple low-power states including ARM Cortex-A9 retention, and peripheral clock gating for deep-sleep power optimization. The architecture separates the application domain (running Linux, Android, or RTOS), the HMI domain (display controller, GPU, video pipeline), and the low-power domain (always-on GPIOs and RTC). This separation lets designers gate high-current domains independently and keep only the wake logic alive for sub-mW standby budgets.

Typical applications include industrial HMI panels, smart appliance control boards, portable medical tablets, e-readers, single-display infotainment secondary screens, POS terminals, and cost-optimized smart-home gateways. The wide peripheral mix supports direct connection to capacitive touch controllers, LVDS/MIPI-DSI panels, camera sensors, and wireless modules.

When designing with this part, allocate at least 4 PCB layers with dedicated power and ground planes to meet the simultaneous-switching current demands of the 432-ball BGA. A two-stage regulator architecture (PMU + point-of-load LDOs/DDCMs) is recommended to feed the core and analog supplies cleanly; the part is not 5V-tolerant on most I/O, so a level shifter may be needed for legacy 5V peripherals.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, same-family drop-in alternatives in the 432-MAPBGA footprint, and HMI-oriented design notes not aggregated on the manufacturer datasheet alone.

The ball map is 18 rows x 24 columns at 0.5 mm pitch, 13 mm x 13 mm body. Designers should pair the datasheet ball map with the i.MX6SL hardware design guide for the recommended escape routing pattern. Most EDA vendors (Altium, Cadence, Mentor) also publish verified BGA land patterns under their library subscriptions.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA?
The best same-package drop-in alternatives in the i.MX 6SoloLite (i.MX6SL) family are the MCIMX6L2DVN10AA (same 432-MAPBGA, 1.0 GHz, slight family variant) and the MCIMX6L2EVN10AB (rev B silicon, same package and clock) used as forward-replacement silicon revisions. For applications that can move to a dual-core device with the same footprint and pinout logic, the MCIMX6L3DVN10AB is the closest pin-compatible option that doubles core count in the same 432-MAPBGA.
MCIMX6L2EVN10AA vs MCIMX6L3DVN10AB - which should I choose for HMI?
Choose the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA (single-core i.MX6SL) when your HMI workload is dominated by a single GUI surface, low frame-rate 2D graphics, and a Linux or RTOS user stack with modest multitasking. Upgrade to the MCIMX6L3DVN10AB (dual-core i.MX6DL) when you need full 1080p video decode, parallel UI + audio synthesis threads, faster boot, or smoother multi-process app launch. Both share the 432-MAPBGA footprint, simplifying a future migration without PCB rework.
How does the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA compare with the MCIMX6U7CVM08AD?
The MCIMX6L2EVN10AA is a single-core i.MX 6SoloLite at 1.0 GHz in a 432-MAPBGA; the MCIMX6U7CVM08AD is from the dual-core i.MX6 family in a 21 mm x 21 mm 529-MAPBGA package. The U7 part offers more cores and memory bandwidth but consumes more power and needs a larger PCB footprint. Stay on the L2 part for cost-and-power-constrained HMI; consider the U7 for higher-end automotive infotainment or video applications.
Is the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA suitable for industrial HMI panels?
Yes. The MCIMX6L2EVN10AA is widely deployed in industrial HMI panels, smart appliance controllers, POS terminals, and portable medical tablets thanks to its display controller (parallel RGB, LVDS, MIPI-DSI), 2D graphics engine, capacitive touch controller interface, and rich connectivity (USB, Ethernet, SD/eMMC). Designers need to verify extended-temperature silicon (-40C to +85C) variants are available if the panel sits in a cold or hot environment; check the operating-temperature spec with NXP for your silicon revision.
What package is the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA in, and what does that imply for PCB layout?
The MCIMX6L2EVN10AA ships in a 432-ball MAPBGA at 0.5 mm pitch on a 13 mm x 13 mm body. Microvia-compatible HDI PCB stacks (any-layer via, laser-drilled microvias) are recommended for escape routing; a 4-layer stack-up with continuous ground plane under the BGA is mandatory for clean power delivery. NXP publishes the i.MX 6SoloLite hardware design guide which includes a reference PCB stack-up, BGA escape scheme, and decoupling plan - use it verbatim for first-pass success.
What are the key specifications engineers should know about the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA?
Core specs for the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA: 32-bit single-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU at up to 1.0 GHz, 32 KB/32 KB L1 I/D cache, 256 KB L2 cache, ARM NEON engine, hardware H.264 decode, integrated 2D graphics, multiple display/camera interfaces, USB 2.0 HS PHY, Gigabit Ethernet MAC, SD/MMC/eMMC storage, 432-MAPBGA 13 mm x 13 mm package, and 40 nm CMOS process technology. Power is managed via on-chip PMU with DVFS and multiple low-power states.
Can the MCIMX6U7CVM08AD replace the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA on the same board?
No, the MCIMX6U7CVM08AD cannot be a drop-in replacement for the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA because it uses a different 529-ball MAPBGA at a larger 21 mm x 21 mm body, which would require PCB rework and a new thermal solution. If you must upgrade cores within the same 432-MAPBGA footprint, jump to the dual-core i.MX6DL family (e.g., MCIMX6L3DVN10AB) instead. Migrate to U-series parts only when a board redesign is acceptable.
When should I choose the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA over a microcontroller for my design?
Pick the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA over a microcontroller (MCU) when your product needs an HLOS (Linux, Android), rich GUI, video decode/encode, large RAM (>64 MB), network stacks, and a multi-process application architecture. MCUs are a better fit when you need deterministic interrupt latency, sub-100 µs real-time control, ultra-low standby current below 100 µA, or on-chip flash. The i.MX6SL sits in the MPU sweet spot between high-performance MCUs and Cortex-A application processors that lack integrated peripherals.
What compliance certifications does the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA carry?
The MCIMX6L2EVN10AA is RoHS compliant and lead-free per its part marking and NXP product page; full REACH and conflict-minerals documentation is available on request from NXP's environmental compliance portal. The part is not AEC-Q100 qualified; for AEC-Q100 automotive variants see the i.MX 6 automotive-grade family (not the Megrez consumer/industrial line). Confirm the latest compliance status from your distributor's lot certificate before volume production.
How does the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA handle power management and low-power states?
The MCIMX6L2EVN10AA integrates a PMU that drives DVFS, supports ARM Cortex-A9 core retention, and partitions the SoC into application, HMI (display/GPU/video), and low-power domains so each can be clock-gated independently. In deep-sleep (DSM) the application and HMI domains power down, while an always-on low-power domain keeps RTC and wake GPIOs alive at single-digit mW. Designers typically pair this with an external PMIC such as PF0100/PF3001 to sequence rails and reach the lowest idle power budgets.

Notas de diseño

Use a minimum 4-layer PCB with continuous ground plane directly under the 432-MAPBGA. The 0.5 mm pitch demand microvia-compatible HDI stack-ups (any-layer or stacked microvias) for BGA escape; laser-drilled microvias at the top layer land onto the BGA balls, with deeper vias stitching planes. Keep power-plane cutouts away from the high-speed DDR3L area (SDRAM nets switch up to 1.6 GHz) and NXP's i.MX6 hardware design guide escape pattern verbatim for first-pass success.

Pair the MCIMX6L2EVN10AA with an NXP PF0100 or PF3001 PMIC to manage core, system, and DDR rails in the correct sequence during power-up and emergency shutdown. The 40 nm process means core current can spike above 1 A during H.264 decode; bulk ceramic bypass (220 µF tantalum + 4 x 22 µF ceramic) is required near the BGA. Estimate: with VIN 3.3 V and full Android workload, SoC + DDR3L BoM budget ~3.5 W, requiring 25 x 25 mm of unbroken inner ground copper for 4-layer thermal relief.

1) Do not connect 5V peripherals directly to the SoC I/O - the part is 3.3 V maximum and is NOT 5V tolerant on most pins; use PCA9410 or PCA9306 level shifters. 2) Use of an LPDDR2 instead of DDR3L requires different timing/calibration firmware and a different board bring-up image. 3) The BGA has no easily accessible GND balls for probing - lay out test pads on the outside perimeter that map to all supply rails before layout freeze.

Estimated: at 1.0 GHz and full H.264 decode workload, the SoC junction dissipates ~2.8 W; with a four-layer PCB and 25 x 25 mm of unbroken inner-plane copper the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is ~22 C/W, giving 61.6 C junction temperature rise above 25 C ambient. For an industrial-grade 85 C ambient target, set design margins so the worst-case junction does not exceed 100 C - aim for under 70 C ambient. Add a small aluminum heat-spreader or thermal pad under the BGA if the chassis is fanless but enclosed.
