PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO Descripción general

The Microchip Technology PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO is a 16-bit RISC Flash microcontroller from the PIC24F XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family, housed in a 28-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body package. It features 16KB of Flash program memory (5.5K x 24 instruction words), 2KB of SRAM, and 512 bytes of EEPROM data memory, and runs the PIC24 CPU core at up to 32MHz delivering 16 MIPS. The 'FV' wide-voltage variant supports 2.5V, 3.3V and 5V operation, making it ideal for mixed-rail designs powered from single-cell Li-ion or USB rails up to industrial 5V buses. Integrated peripherals include a 12-bit ADC, Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP/ECCP), UART, SPI, I2C, and the unique CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) for capacitive touch and precise time measurement.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, data RAM, and peripherals into one IC. The PIC24F family is Microchip's 16-bit general-purpose MCU tier, sitting between the 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 and the 32-bit PIC32 families. Within that tier, the XLP sub-family is optimized for ultra-low-power applications, with multiple Deep Sleep modes that retain core state while drawing only nanoamps of current. The 'FV' device class extends the supply range from the standard 1.8-3.6V (F) up to 5.5V (FV), removing the need for an external LDO in 5V designs.

Key features include Deep Sleep current in the nanowatt range, retention of RTCC (Real-Time Clock/Calendar), DSBOR (Deep Sleep Brown-Out Reset), and DSWDT (Deep Sleep Watchdog Timer) across Deep Sleep, and the CTMU peripheral that converts a timer input into a capacitance measurement - enabling touch buttons, liquid-level sensing, and time-of-flight metrology without an external analog front end. The 12-bit ADC with up to 16 channels, 200 ksps conversion rate, and selectable reference supports sensor signal conditioning directly on-chip.

The device is fabricated on an advanced CMOS process and uses a 16-bit modified Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses. Code executes linearly from Flash; interrupt latency is deterministic. The integrated PLL allows the 32MHz core to be derived from the internal 8MHz oscillator or an external crystal, with Fail-Safe Clock Monitor (FSCM) that detects primary-clock failure and switches to the internal LPRC oscillator without application intervention.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensor nodes, IoT edge devices, wearables, portable medical monitors, smart remote controls, and any low-power 5V industrial controller. The CTMU peripheral makes it particularly attractive for capacitive touch user interfaces and flow meters. The wide-voltage capability (2.0-5.5V) supports direct Li-ion coin-cell operation and eliminates the BOM cost of a separate voltage regulator in 5V designs.

When designing with the PIC24FV16KA302, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to VDD/VSS pairs and consider a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the main rail. Enable Deep Sleep aggressively between events to maximize battery life; the XLP Wake-on-Touch and RTCC-alarm features keep average current in the nanowatt region for duty-cycled applications.

Average sleep current below 100 nA enables multi-year battery life on duty-cycled measurement intervals.

📱

Capacitive Touch User Interfaces

The integrated CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) on the PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO turns the on-chip timer into a precision capacitance meter, enabling capacitive touch buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors without any external analog front-end. Each CTMU channel sources a constant current into a touch pad and measures the resulting charge time, supporting moisture-tolerant touch detection and wake-on-touch from Deep Sleep - critical for battery-powered appliances. The wide 2.0-5.5V supply range allows the same firmware to drive 3.3V and 5V touch-panel designs, simplifying platform variants. Compared with dedicated touch ICs, the CTMU approach removes a companion part and frees GPIO for additional UI functions like LED PWM dimming.

💊

Portable Medical Monitoring Devices

The PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO fits portable medical monitors such as pulse oximeters, glucose meters, and single-lead ECG patches because its XLP Deep Sleep current and wide-voltage operation support coin-cell operation for days or weeks. The 12-bit ADC delivers sufficient resolution for optical or bio-impedance sensor front-ends, while the 512B EEPROM stores calibration constants across battery replacements. The CTMU peripheral can drive liquid-level or electrode-impedance detection, removing external analog components. Compared with discrete 8-bit designs, the 16-bit core simplifies integer math on biosignal filters and frees MIPS headroom for future feature additions without re-platforming.

🏭

Industrial 5V Sensor and Control Modules

The wide-voltage 'FV' specification (2.0-5.5V) of the PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO allows direct connection to 24V-bus-derived 5V rails common in industrial PLCs, motor controllers and process sensors. The 12-bit ADC and ECCP PWM modules support 4-20mA loop transmitters, solenoid drivers and PWM-controlled valve actuation without an external DAC. The -40C to +125C Enhanced operating range covers outdoor enclosures and factory-floor temperature extremes. Compared with 3.3V-only F-class parts, the FV variant eliminates the cost and quiescent-current overhead of a 5V-to-3.3V LDO in every node.

📺

Smart Remote Controls and Consumer HIDs

The PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO drives smart remote controls, BLE-pairing key fobs, and consumer human-interface devices where 2-5 year battery life on a coin cell is expected. The XLP Deep Sleep current in the nanowatt range combined with CTMU Wake-on-Touch delivers a sub-microamp idle budget between button presses. The on-chip UART/SPI/I2C radios connect to a companion BLE or sub-GHz transceiver over a single serial link. Compared to 8-bit PIC16 designs, the 16-bit core handles button-debounce state machines, IR protocols and LCD segment driving with margin for adding voice-trigger or gesture features later.

📱

Wearables and Fitness Trackers

The PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO is well-suited to wearable fitness bands, smart watches and step-counter pods where its XLP Deep Sleep current (nanowatts) enables multi-week battery life on small Li-Po or coin cells. The wide 2.0-5.5V supply range supports direct single-cell Li-ion charging profiles, removing the need for a discrete LDO between battery and MCU. The CTMU peripheral implements body-proximity and skin-contact detection for automatic wrist-on/wrist-off behavior. The 12-bit ADC captures optical heart-rate or temperature sensor outputs at the 200 ksps rate, allowing oversampling for noise reduction. Compared to ARM-Cortex designs at this node size, the PIC24FV16KA302 offers simpler toolchain and lower BOM cost.

Guía de selección

Choose the PIC24FV16KA302-E/SO when the design runs directly from a 5V or wide-voltage (2.0-5.5V) rail and needs CTMU-based capacitive touch or nanowatt Deep Sleep retention. For cost-sensitive consumer designs limited to -40C to +85C, the PIC24FV16KA302-I/SO is the same die in the same SOIC-28 footprint with industrial-only temperature range. If firmware may grow beyond 16KB during field updates, the PIC24FV32KA302-E/SO (32KB Flash, same 28-SOIC) is a drop-in upgrade path. For space-constrained designs requiring a narrower footprint, the PIC24FV16KA302-E/SS (28-SSOP) is pin-compatible electrically but requires PCB land-pattern rework. For through-hole prototyping and breadboarding, the PIC24FV16KA302-E/SP (SPDIP-28) drops into the same schematic but needs a different PCB.

Notas de diseño

Place a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to each VDD/VSS pin pair, with a 10 uF X5R bulk capacitor on the main supply rail. Keep trace lengths to the cap below 5 mm to minimize parasitic inductance. For Deep Sleep applications, gate all unnecessary current paths and avoid pull-ups on unused I/O - each floating input can leak microamps.

Route the ICSP programming pins (PGEC/PGED, shared with RB6/RB7) with no series resistors in-circuit; Microchip debuggers require direct access. Keep the MCLR trace short and add a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD plus a 100 nF cap to ground for noise immunity, or omit the cap if an external supervisor drives MCLR directly. The 28-SOIC wide-body package allows easier hand-soldering and rework compared with the SSOP variant.

Do not exceed 5.5V on VDD - the FV device is wide-voltage but not high-voltage; a 6V rail will damage the part. When using the CTMU, calibrate the constant-current trim register on each hardware revision, since PCB stray capacitance shifts touch sensitivity. Avoid using the internal LPRC oscillator for UART or timing-critical peripherals; LPRC is for low-power RTC use only.
